Today, like every day, the large animal had woken up. This place was not entirely the same as the other place where it had been the day before. The Highland bull barely noticed how the scenery slowly moved about as it munched its way through the territories, oblivious to the invisible borders it was crossing every now and then. The marked borders did not go entirely unnoticed, but the bull was not aware of what they meant, and therefore paid no special attention. It just made sure not to eat that grass, because sometimes it would taste a bit non-grass like, and then it could not be grass as it knew it, and that was very wrong and could not be eaten. No, no, no.

The cow chewed away happily, eyes looking in their respective directions, giving the large creature a rather mentally challenged look, which only revealed to the world what it was. There was a scent of danger all around, but with no visible danger to run from. The animal could not do much else than continue chewing mechanically, blissfully watching a square looking box like thing in the middle of all the grass. It was not green like grass, and did not look like grass. It had to be a tree. Tree was no danger.

........
They had moved Baby Duck’s house a bit away from the den entrance, so that Noir could play with her pet in the mornings without disturbing the rest of the family. Noir Aston was still the morning bird in the family, and she spent her lonely hours playing outside with her still relatively new baby and Toefur, although the faded pink octopus plushie was slowly losing its magical powers in the eyes of the ageing child. She had spent the morning outside as usual, but as the day had bloomed, her energy had toned her game down a bit. The girl still enjoyed a nap every now and then, and while the Aston family had taken off, she had stayed in the den together with Claudius. She had not been much fun for her fragile brother, but gods knew the boy could need some break from Attila’s terror.

........
The girl’s ears perked up when she heard movement from outside, and instantly believed that her family was back with dinner. All her siblings seemed to enjoy hunting, and came with Tayui more often to help catch food. She thought hunting made Attila cocky, especially since the golden girl rather disliked the act in itself. She did not have large issues eating the dead meat, because it was already dead, but she disliked the thought of taking a life, regardless of its place on the food chain. It just felt wrong to her. The blonde child stretched and yawned, ignoring Claudius as she went to the den exit, lazily poking her head up through the hole, only to be blinded by the bright sunlight.

........
A few moments after the girl realized that the sounds had not been her family. It was the biggest thing she had ever seen, and had lots of hair. The girl choked the gasp that had been on its way, ducking down again instantly and running into the depths of the den. Then, panic struck her heart. Baby Duck was outside in its house, right next to the big monster like thing. A mewl escaped her. ”Claudius, there’s a monster outsiiide!” the girl whispered, voice high pitched, loudly announcing that she was on her way in becoming hysterical.

Claudius could feel Noir's presence shifting, moving from one place to another in the den. He squinted at his sister, flinching when she moved to stand at the entrance of the den. Each time she moved, the sun changed. He could see that Noir also found the sun to be a little annoying (which it was! The sun was so mean!) as she squinted. Claudius yawned groggily, all the while wondering when everyone else was going to come home. Momma-Tay had told him she would be home soon and he knew that meant Attila had gone with her to go hurt things. Although Noir did not like hunting because it made her feel sad, Claudius did not like hunting because he was so bad at it. And, of course, Attila liked to make fun of him every time he messed up! Momma-Tay said he would have to learn how to hunt in his "own special way" because his one leg wasn't long enough, so he couldn't always walk well. But she also said one day he could learn to use his two-legged opp-teem form, and then he could hunt with them!

Until then, he was keeping Noir company in the den (or was Noir keeping him company? He did have to admit she was a lot stronger and cooler than he was...), and had been peacefully napping while they waited for the rest of the tribe members to return.

He grumbled and rolled over onto his other side, shutting his eyes tightly. He wanted to sleep! And Noir was being noisy! He shut his eyes tighter, trying to will himself to sleep, but was interrupted -- again. Noir shouted his name, and Claudius mumbled something in reply. He opened his eyes again, then frowned. A monster? No, no, no, Claudius did not like monsters!

"Noooiirr," he whined, "make it go away then!" He paused, torn between following her to the den and rolling over and pretending the monster was not there. But now he wanted to know what the monster was! He frowned, harrumphed, then sat up. He flattened his ears, eyeing his sister with a grimace. Maybe she should come back in the den...?

"Come back, Noiirr," he whispered, his voice cracking in the middle. He did not want to see any monsters!

There was a yellow, thick plant that popped up from a hole. For a moment, the Highland animal stood still, its slow brain attempting to calculate exactly what had happened. Perhaps it had been there all along. It smelled of danger, of smaller creatures than itself, yet very dangerous if they were in a group. The cow was unsure what to think of it all, because there was so much smell and no figures. It was positive that trees and grass were not danger, and that was all that was in sight. The yellow thing! It was gone! The large bull stretched its neck out in the direction of where it had believed there had been something yellowish, but now no more. The creature huffed loudly, forcing air in and out of its large nostrils, unable to understand how this could be.

The giant bull advanced slowly, still believing the yellow plant had to be somewhere. The Highland cow’s fur brushed against the square formed tree, until it heard something squish under one of its magnificent hooves. It hesitated for a moment before continuing to walk towards the dark hole, not even checking out what it had stepped on.

Make it go away? The golden girl shook her head in desperation. He had not even seen it. It was huge, and had large horns and was very big! Noir mewled in despair and turned away from her useless brother. What was she supposed to do? She had never seen a real monster before, and certainly not made one go away. Her mind was not the only thing that ached. Her whole body throbbed painfully along with her increased heart beat. The circle of light now seemed more threatening than ever. Who would have thought Noir would prefer staying in the dark? She had to. She was a good mommy, and good mommies saved their babies from danger! Yes. New courage flooded into the blonde girl, and her golden eyes received a new, harder glint that was an almost foreign look for the lovable Aston child.

........
When she slowly rose up from the den entrance, she suddenly wished she hadn’t. Baby Duck was awake and left the box, but did only get a few steps before a giant foot like thing crushed it down against the earth. The worst part was that there was no sound from the small bird. The girl’s short life passed in front of her eyes and her head felt unnaturally light. Then, Noir realized what had happened. ”Noooooooooooooo!” the puppy screamed, her voice soaked in true despair. No! ”Baby Duck, nooo!” It could not be true. It couldn’t. Her lungs burned for air, and no matter how hard she tried to inhale, it simply did not work. The girl lost her footing completely, her vision darkening.

........
The giant animal was still there, although it seemed to stand still. Golden eyes sought after the grey form of her beloved Baby Duck in desperation, but she could not see anything but that big, horrible monster, and that was through a thick film of the liquid that quickly was filling up in her eyes.
