blackbird singing in the dead of night

dated to the night of the 28th. 300+

The sun was setting and her mother had definitely been right; the sunsets here were beautiful. Rikka lounged with her back against one of the walls that was the entrance to her cave. She was still getting used to the fact that she was actually living back in Inferni. It still didn't seem real. Maybe it was because things were so different than she had remembered them. That was a good thing though, not all of her memories of the clan were that fond. The nagging question of whether or not she had made the right decision still itched at the back of her mind, but for now she wasn't worrying about it. Things had gone smoothly thus far and she wouldn't taint that with worrying over the things that could go wrong. If she focused on that then things probably would go wrong. A positive outlook went a long way, and that's how the woman was going to live.

The wind howled past the cave opening and it sent a chill down the de le Poer's spine. It was getting cold here, and she was without any blankets. That would be something she would have to remedy soon. However, she wanted something to take the chill off now and the only way to do that would be to start a fire. Rikka got to her feet and walked around gathering some dry sticks that would suffice for a small, personal fire. Once she had enough she moved back to her cave and arranged them in a little pile. A hand rummaged in her pack for one of the packs of matches and took it out. She struck the match and placed it under the stick, leaning over and gently blowing on the flame to encourage it to grow. Within a minute or so the sticks were catching and she sat back satisfied. The silver and gold hybrid huddled close to the little fire, holding her hands over it to catch the warmth.

Vieira's journey back seemed to take longer than expected. She was carrying more weight than on the way down and it slowed her pace. She found a satchel in a house where she found the blankets and carried the alcohol bottles in that so she did not drop or break any of them. She also have a large blanket that covered the satchel and two others, a small and medium to large sized one in her arms. Unfortunately, a little more than half way there she felt fatigued and didn't think she could carry all the weight. She stopped for a drink and went through her things, trying to decide what to give up. She knew giving up any of the alcohol bottles were not an option, whether or not Kaena would find out, and so Vieira left the large of the two blankets she was carrying in her arms and carried the large one (which was overwhelming a little) and it reduced some of the stress on her shoulders.

Kaena had been pleased with her arrival and Vieira could not have helped a smile on her face. Vieira set to making up a small bed in her room of the cave and setting it up to get into easily should she be on four legs instead of two.

It was dark now and the evening was quiet. Kaena was out and away from the den and she considered curling up in her blankets and dozing off. She knew she needed the rest but she also knew she should be awake for her return, whenever it may be. Astaroth had punished her many times for sleeping without permission. So for now, she went to the mouth of the cave and glanced back and forth for her owner's presence but she saw nothing. However, fire caught her attention and she glanced over, a little surprised. The main fire pit was not lit this morning and this knew one made her curious. With the wind cold on her fur, she stepped out of the mouth of the cave and walked a few yards to see if she recognized the woman. It was not Ava, nor Snake, and so she lingered back for a moment without realizing she could easily be seen.

As the fire grew to a good size she felt the warmth seep into her bones and she was more content. Grinning she leaned back against the wall of the cave, golden eyes listlessly looking over the territory that surrounded her. Rikka had yet to explore the territory much, right now she was more concerned with getting all settled in. Once she felt cozy in this space then she would have the time to see the rest of Inferni and beyond. She was interested to see if any of the other packs had moved over from the old lands. Of course there were wolf packs around, but she was curious to see if they were all new and what the attitudes of each were. She understood caution would need to be used on her part, but she wasn't too worried about it, assuming if she were pleasant then there would be no reason for the wolves to be hostile towards her.

Looking around her eyes almost missed the figure standing in the near distance, but her eyes did settled on her and her smile widened. The woman couldn't see the other too well, but it didn't look like anyone she knew. Eager to make new acquaintances she raised her hand in a wave. "Hey there!" she called out cheerily. The wave then turned into a beckoning motion, urging the stranger to come closer. "Come warm yourself up, I'm not greedy!" Sharing was caring, after all.

She had been noticed after a moment and Vieira knew she would have been. She lingered too long and now she could not turn around and go back inside Kaena's cave. Vieira's golden eyes looked to the fire and then away, sniffing the air for Kaena's immediate scent but it was missing and she decided that it was okay. She could return to the cave soon enough, hopefully, but she had been given permission to move away from the cave but it was limited. The cave area was a safe place for her to go and so she moved, though still nervously, and sat down by the fire.

The slave was not all that close, perhaps a few feet away, but it was good enough for her. She felt the flicker of warmth as it filled her and her eyes watched the flame. After she had been sitting a moment, she scooted closer and put her hands in her lap. "Thank you, ma'am," she said and let her tail thump on the ground before it curled against her petite and tiny form.

Rikka watched the other femme curiously when she didn't immediately take up her offer and come over. It confused her for a second, but she had to remind herself that she was no longer living in the commune. There everyone had been drawn to one another like magnets, but that's not what was Inferni was like. They may have all lived together, but not everyone was going to be as social as the silver and gold hybrid was. After a few moments of contemplation though the other approached and Rikka's tail swept the floor of the cave, happy to have the chance to meet a new face. Though even when she approached she didn't get so close. Once again this struck her as odd and once again she had to remind herself of where she was. Inferni was not exactly a touchy-feely place.

Soon though the fire seemed to ease the other girl's hesitance and she scooted a little closer and finally spoke. "Ma'am?" Rikka said with laughter in her voice. "Don't call me that, Rikka will do just fine, I'm no 'ma'am'." No one had ever called her "ma'am", it sounded so strange to the female's ears. "What's your name? You new to the clan?" She wouldn't know who was and who wasn't, having just returned herself.

In a land where slaves were not common, she was faced with a lot. Ava had tried to be nice to her and tried to open her up and act less like an empty shell of an object. Rikka, however unknown to the situation, was doing it unintentionally. Vieira smiled a little and nodded, giving it a try. "Yes, Rikka," she said quietly. It was foreign on her tongue when a simple ma'am, sir, miss, master, or whatever other addition to who she was talking to was applied. Astaroth had demanded the use of Father or Master when spoken to and Sivaro went with Master or Sir. Eris didn't seem to care as long as she was fawned over and Vieira did her best to worship the woman in order to prevent being chained up outside in the cold.

"I am new, yes, it is nice to meet you" she said and glanced toward the woman and then back at the fire to keep her focus away and out of any sort of eye contact. "My name is Vieira Lykoi," she began and hesitated, but picked up the rest of her introduction, "I belong to Kaena Lykoi." Vieira looked forward to the day when the majority of the clan knew and would not have to ask her who she was and she would not have to indicate she belonged to someone. It was easier at Eterne when she never got an introduction and if she did, it was not common.

It was good to see the other smile. Smiles always suited people better than frowns or neutral expressions. The de le Poer almost had to keep herself from laughing as she once again thought of where she was living. She was so horrendously out of place. Going from The Haight to Inferni was probably one of the most drastic scenery changes she could have made. It wasn't bothering her yet though, and she hoped it would stay that way. She didn't want to start regretting her decision. "See? That's much better. No need for formalities." Such terms that Vieira was used to using only made Rikka uncomfortable for she was not at all a formal person. It wasn't to say she didn't have manners, she just much preferred friendly, relaxed conversation.

"It's nice to meet you too! I'm pretty new too, at least newly returned." For all intents and purposes though, she was new. She'd been a member of Inferni before, but not in this incarnation of it. These lands were foreign to her even if the name and some of the faces were not. In the back of her mind the lack of eye contact was registered, but she didn't really think about it too much, passing it off as shyness. Head cocked to side as the name Lykoi came out of her mouth. "Lykoi? We're related then?" Rikka had never heard of a Vieira Lykoi, but that certainly didn't mean much considering she'd been away. Though the really confusing thing was the last thing she said. "'Belong to'? What do you mean 'belong to'?" she said, and eyebrow cocking. Things belonged to people, other people didn't belong to people.

"I do not think we are related," she murmured and looked at her. "There are two here that are my half siblings, Samael and Razekiel," she added on and nodded. It's what Kaena said and she had no reason to disbelieve. Eris had told her she was a Lykoi when Sivaro died and the female had taken her and Vieira had no reason to not to believe her, either.

The woman got a similar response to that of Ava or Snake and she looked at her cold fingers, wiggling them and pushing them to rest on her knees to feel the warmth. She did not respond right away because she did not feel threatened. She might have been hit by one of her formers owners for taking so long and perhaps it was because Eris was so erratic and careless about keeping her in line that some of it wore off. However, for the most part, Vieira knew better. She turned her head slightly to look at the others feet in thought. "I belong to Kaena," she repeated for emphasis but she knew she would have to explain.

"I arrived yesterday for Kaena," she said and hoped she would not ask about the details. Vieira could not (or thought she could not) give them out. "I am her slave," she finished up quickly and made sure it was to the point instead of beating around the bush. Her ears angled backward. Vieira was not entirely upset over this, she knew not the taste of freedom and was sure she would not know what to do with herself if she had it.

righteous fury ho! also if this flows weird I apologize x.x the last bit was written a while after the first. 300+

Samael and Razekiel were her only relatives? Then that meant... "Your father was Astaroth? Why do you carry the Lykoi name then?" Not that she was at all offended, only confused. If no Lykoi blood was in her then why was she called a Lykoi? There was apparently a complicated web surrounding the girl and Rikka was ignorant to most of it.

Rikka watched Vieira intently but not in a scrutinizing manner. She was just wholly and completely perplexed by what she had said. Had she only meant that she was some child of Kaena's and said it in a roundabout way? Surely that had to be it, her mother didn't "own" anyone, it was absurd. Though when the other spoke again she repeated the exact phrasing, but still it wasn't clear to the hybrid. It was too bizarre of a concept for her mind to grapple with. You didn't own others, you just didn't. You may say someone was "your's", about a lover or something, but you didn't mean it literally. Vieira continued talking and spoke of herself as if she had been some sort of parcel or something. What the hell? was the phrase that kept running through her mind. Then when the word "slave" hit her ears it all seemed to click and in that instant a hot flame lit in her chest and she scowled.

"Arrived for her? And she accepted you as her slave?" How could her mother have done such a thing? How? There were many things that she and Kaena had never agreed on, but this? This went beyond anything she would have imagined the woman of doing, and to be honest, it infuriated her. "That's not right..." her words were accompanied by a soft growl and her tail flicked in annoyance. "No one is anyone else's property, that's fucked up. How dare anyone think that. How dare they!" Rikka's jaws ground against each other. It appeared that her newly formed bond with her mother was already falling apart. How could Kaena think that such a thing was acceptable?

Vieira opened her mouth to answer and then realized it might be information Kaena did not want to share. Simply, she shook her head and indicated she could not know and instead watched as Rikka began to connect everything together by the pieces and suddenly, when it clicked, everything changed. Her voice changed and she sounded so angry that Vieira began to get nervous for the others actions. She didn't know what to expect but Vieira knew she had to remain on good terms with everyone, especially those related to Kaena. Her ears angled backward and she parted her mouth to answer, but no words came.

The former seemed so nice and now Vieira wasn't sure what to think. She was getting angry at the idea, something she had not experienced. Back home, slaves were acceptable and it was not often times questioned. Not many coyotes knew of her blood relation to her master but nonetheless, it would not have mattered. Here was completely different. The other coyotes and Silas seemed to accept she was far lower than them socially, that she was a slave and property, but did not look at her the same. No one did. Now Rikka was acting as if she were angry and the woman did not know why. Perhaps if she had a taste of free will before submitting to power but she had never had such a thing.

When she felt her nervousness and worry hit the roof, the woman began to stand. She knew she would be leaving the company of another without permission or order but she did not feel right. Something like this could get her in trouble and she wanted to do what she could to avoid punishment. "I sh-should go before Miss Kaena comes back," she murmured in the process of standing.

It was incredibly unusual for Rikka to get so worked up over anything. For the most part she had a very long fuse and it took a lot to get her upset, but this was a lot. She had heard about how many human cultures had had slavery, but for the most part it had been eradicated in the later centuries of their history. The hybrid had never heard about its occurrence in her own culture before though, and it honestly made her sick to her stomach. They were all created equal and to try and make someone a slave was just horrible. Mother Nature hadn't intended for any of her children to treat one another in such a way and it made her cry. Were they starting to turn into the humans? Once they started abusing each other it was only a matter of time before the Earth was subject to their abuse as well.

The peace-loving woman was so worked up that she didn't notice that Vieira hadn't spoken since her mood had so drastically changed and was oblivious to how uncomfortable the situation was making her. It was only when the other stood up and stuttered out something about leaving that Rikka was able to cool down a bit. Her face softened and she stood up, walking over to the smaller canine. "Hey, I'm sorry, you don't have to go. I'm not mad at you, okay? I just don't think it's right that you should be treated any differently than me or Kaena or anyone. Please sit back down?" She really didn't want Vieira to go and hadn't meant to make her feel bad. The only thing she wanted to do was to show her that she deserved to be treated better than that. Also, the next time she saw her mother she knew there would be a confrontation about this. She could turn a blind eye to the violence, but this was too much.

Vieira straightened when she stood and dusted her backside off lightly while taking a few steps back. She decided she needed to be careful when she introduced herself next time. They tried to get her out of her shell but it was not possible, especially not under someone's control. Vieira could live with Ava's reaction, even Snake's, but Rikka's was very strong and she got upset rather easily. It just made her believe further than slavery was not even accepted here. Her eyes scanned for Kaena when the other approached and she apologized. She lingered a moment longer while standing and stared at the floor.

After a moment of silence and stiffly standing in place, she stepped forward again and awkwardly sat back down. Her head turned slightly to glance at Rikka and feeling the warmth of the fire again. While glancing at her feet, she had a realization. What if Rikka told Kaena what she thought? She'd never experienced someone so strongly opinionated against slaves. What if Kaena thought Vieira was complaining? Her ears rested back against her head. "Please don't talk to Kaena about it, miss Rikka," she said quietly, fighting a whimper. She didn't know what kind of punishments Kaena had in mind, if any at all, and she did not want to start now.

For a few moments it seemed that Vieira was going to leave anyway and guilt stabbed at the female's chest. She hadn't meant to make the girl feel bad in any way and was regretful that her anger had made her feel that she needed to leave. It wasn't in her nature to try and drive anyone away from her and so in the rare occasion where it did happen she felt the need to rectify the situation immediately. If this was true, and she was being treated as a slave, Rikka wanted to be her friend and treat her like she deserved to be treated. The last thing she wanted was to drive her away and make her think that she didn't like her because of what she was. The woman was upset with her mother for accepting another canine as a slave, not with the coyote for being one.

The de le Poer sighed with relief when Vieira sat back down in front of the fire. She had a second chance and she wasn't going to blow it. She moved to sit down again as well, though she kept her closer proximity to the smaller fey, wanting to make sure that she didn't feel alienated at all. Just as she felt her muscles relaxing again Vieira spoke and Rikka looked over to her, noting the outward expressions of fear in her. "I want to talk to her about it, because it's not right and you deserve to be free, but I'll make sure she understands that I'm talking to her because I want to not because you said anything. It won't be hard for her to believe, there have been a lot of things that my mother and I haven't agreed on over the years." There was a somber, almost sad expression on the golden hybrid's face. She had really thoughts things were turning around and now it seemed they had taken a massive step backward again.

Her response was not taken and instead, Rikka announced she wanted to just as Vieira had expected. She listened and stared at the flames, her hands lightly toughing the fur on the back of her calves. Even if Rikka could make Kaena believe Vieira had nothing to do with it, she still fear the punishment. Astaroth or Sivaro would not have stood for anyone disagreeing with them about owning a slave (not that anyone did) and it was just another reason for either of them to take anger out on her in a punishment form. They always found ways. She had only been here two days and she was already upsetting people.

Vieira wanted to object and convince Rikka it was not a good idea. She was on the other side. She was built not to have feelings, but she did, she simply had to fight them off and keep them to herself. She was built not to have any sort of will making everything easy. Without a personality with either of those, she was an object and it did not matter. Blame would be on her, she was sure of it, and she swallowed hard with fear. Even if Kaena did not punish her, the ghosts of her former owners would find a way.

It was practically impossible for her to truly understand Vieira's fear of being punished for something she hadn't done. Kaena could be headstrong at times, but she couldn't imagine her taking her anger out on the girl for something Rikka would say. Maybe if Vieira was a wolf she would be able to see such an outcome, but she wasn't a wolf, she was most clearly a coyote. That made this whole situation even more hard to grasp for her. While she still absolutely would not have agreed with it, if Kaena had decided to accept a slave that was a wolf it would have been easier to understand, but how on earth she was able to accept a slave that was a coyote was beyond her. The girl looked even more coyote than Kaena did herself. Rikka was ignorant to the fact that this had been Vieira's way of life for as long as she could remember, and so that made it all the more difficult for her to understand her. Didn't she want to be free?

The other didn't say anything more but she could tell that she was still worried about what could come from her speaking to Kaena about this all. Rikka didn't fool herself into thinking she could convince her mother to not treat the girl as a slave in one encounter, but maybe at the least she could convince her that this was a very dicey thing she was doing and that she deserved an amount of respect and caring. Even in the Lykoi matron wasn't willing to do that, her daughter would be. "Vieira, I don't want to make things worse for you. I only want to help you, to try and make it better. You're no different from anyone else and you don't deserve to have your rights taken away and to be treated like you're less than what you are." All she wanted to do was to help her and to try and make her life better, even if it didn't mean her complete freedom.

Vieira listened while Rikka tried to convince her that she was a coyote, that she was real and not an object. Her eyes blinked away and she stared at her cold hands. The woman could not believe it. She knew she had feelings and bled when she was poked but she was not supposed to. Her ears ears swiveled and cupped forward, shaking her head to try and convince her otherwise. It were not that easy. Vieira knew it wasn't. She could not be something else, not without any sort of help or guidance. She could not undo everything done to her. It was permanent and haunt her. The ghosts of her owners would hurt her somehow, she knew it. They were still hurting her today and she could do nothing.

"No, I am different," she said and turned her head, looking at the ground between the two of them. "I have always been a slave, I have never had rights... I'm... I am different," she stumbled, still feeling nervous. She could not change this. Rikka could not change this. She still worried about Kaena, if Rikka spoke to her... she could not shake it. Her jaws tightened as she fell into silence and she lifted her hand, touching her muzzle and lightly brushing the septum piercing in her nose before it slid back over her head while she tried to deal with the new stress.

Her inability to completely understand Vieira was similar to her inability to understand her mother. Unbeknownst to her, both had suffered a lot in their early lives and it had done a lot to shape who they were now. Rikka's childhood had had its rough patches, but she had never suffered abuse and neglect. If she had she might have been able to put herself more into their places, but without that knowledge it was hard for her to do. There was probably a part of her that didn't want to. Not that she expected them to get over what had happened to them and just be fine, not at all, but for her own sanity the de le Poer woman tried to focus on the brighter side of life. She was well aware of the ugliness in the world, but she tried not to pay as much attention to it. She needed to believe that the world was mostly good and that things could change for the better.

Though Vieira's next words shed a little more light on her situation. Being a slave wasn't something that was new to her, this was just the continuation of a life-long pattern. Still, that didn't make Kaena's continual of that pattern any better. Her mother knew what abuse was like and she should have recognized it in this girl and wanted to help her, not use her. Slowly Rikka reached out to the other female, her hand lightly resting on her knee. Golden eyes searched her face, trying to make eye contact. "You're not different." She had been brainwashed to think that, but it wasn't true. "They made you think you're different, but you're not Vieira. You're the same as anyone else. What they did to you was wrong, and I'm sorry." She had no clue who the "they" were, but they obviously existed. It didn't matter if Rikka had nothing to do with what had happened to her, she was still sorry. Nothing like this should ever happen.

Vieira jerked when she saw Rikka's hand. She knew it was not to lash out at her but it was a natural reflex when something neared her. Her jaw tightened and she took a breath while trying to settle the quickening of her heart. A hand usually meant a lash of some sort and while her gesture had been gentle and laid easily on her knee, her natural reflex was hard to fight. Her eyes closed as she soothed herself within a few seconds and opened to Rikka trying to look at her. Awkwardly, she turned her head away from the girl and stared to the other side.

It was hard to listen to Rikka's words when her training was so ingrained into her mind. She disagreed with the other coyote but could not find it in herself to argue again. She could only go so far with the disagreement and after that, she fell silent. Her fingers twisted as she cupped her hands together and resisted the urge to pull away from her touch.

It seemed that she was not very apt at handling such a situation and she flinched and grimaced as Vieira jerked away at the sight of her hand. Had she thought she was going to hurt her? All the woman could think was, you poor thing, what have they done to you? Whatever had happened to her had been horrific, that was clear to her now. If only she were more knowledgeable on handling individuals who had been through severe abuse (it was clear that in Vieira's case it was both mental and physical). "Hey...I'm not going to hurt you, okay? I'd never hurt you." Or anyone else. It was against not only her beliefs but her nature. How she had ended up the way she was with the blood that flowed in her veins was something she couldn't answer, she simply knew it was not in her to hurt anyone. Especially not such a sweet and timid creature as Vieira was.

Was any of this reaching her? Rikka couldn't tell and she heaved a sad sigh. What could she do to help her? "I don't know if you believe me or not, but trust me when I say I believe it. Mother Earth created us all the same and she never meant for us to own each other. Everyone is different, but when you cut it all down to the basics we're just the same. You have a mind and heart and soul just like any other creature." Maybe if she repeated it enough she would start to crack the oppressive weight that had held her down her whole life.

Vieira knew Rikka was trying to help but it was making her uncomfortable. She knew none of her owners would want anyone talking to her about this, especially the deceased ones and she could hear them screaming in her mind. All of sudden, she realized she could not take it anymore and she jerked away completely from her touch. She could not believe that someone was nice like this, that she was more than a slave, that she was not supposed to be this. Her mind could not handle it. When she realized she pulled away and could not feel Rikka's hand on her, she looked at her leg and shook her head. "I'm sorry, ma'am," she mumbled and put her hand to her eyes, rubbing them and moving away.

"I need to go back now," she murmured. She knew she needed to go back before Kaena returned to an empty cave. She had to make things were tidy and in place like it was left, even though it was. Vieira never messed with anything and usually sat in her little room. She just had to make sure she was back, ready for whatever Kaena wished. Quickly, Vieira scrambled to stand and almost stumbled back to the ground but she was able to keep her balance and stand, waiting for half a second on permission to leave but she knew Rikka would not give commands and she would have to take the chance to go herself.
