Finally the wayward hybrid was returning to the clan lands, though she wasn’t planning on making the stay back at home too extended. She needed to take everything she had picked up in the city back to her cave and then she’d settle down and catch wind of how things were going. If she was comfortable with the happens she’d stick around and if things were still rubbing her the wrong way then she’d go off and do some more exploring again. It probably seemed like she was being a pretty lousy member, but honestly she was doing this so she could get acclimated and actually stick around. Going from living in a hippie commune to Inferni was a pretty drastic change and it had substantially shocked her system. The woman just needed to take some baby steps so she wouldn’t bolt at the first sign of trouble. Rikka wasn’t incredibly flighty, but there were things that could send her running.

Her pack jangled as it bounced against her thigh. Arms were filled with blankets and one downy comforter. She had had to stop several times on the trek back to rest her arms. It wasn’t the weight, but the way that she had to hold all the items that was so tiring. Vaguely she remembered seeing some odd cart thing with wheels back in the city. She should have grabbed on of those, it would have made hauling all this back much easier. Oh well, she’d remember it next time around. Not only had she grabbed blankets, but some dye to use for tie dying along with twin and a shirt or two. She would need to still find gloves to protect her hands and something to mix the dye in, but she could find those on her next trip. The city was chock full of goodies and Rikka couldn’t wait to bring more home.

The caves came into sight and she had to carefully pick her way around to avoid tripping over the terrain. This was exceedingly difficult considering it was hard to see with all the stuff she had in her arms, so she had to rely on using her feet to feel their way along slowly. It almost seemed it would take as long to get to her cave as it had to get back to Inferni from the city, but finally she made it and with a huff unloaded her finding at the mouth of her dwelling. The hybrid stretched out her arms and back, glad that her journey back was complete.

It felt strange using his Optime form. Hybrid usually found it to be bulky and annoying, and much preferred his Secui form over his other two; however, he knew had to be proficient in all his forms to be worthy of calling himself a Hydra. Hybrid took his role in Inferni very seriously; perhaps too seriously. After all, he gave himself his own tasks and frequently patrolled the borders, even though it was not his duty to do so specifically. Regardless, he thought it should be a necessary task for all members, as they could never be sure when they would find a filthy trespasser.

Hybrid moved slowly as he walked through the snowy territory, pausing only when he lost his balance. The ground was slippery, and Hybrid was unused to his Optime form. This forced him to constantly reconsider every movement, as he did not want to slip and injure himself.

As Hybrid neared the caves, he let out a breath of relief. He could not wait to relax in the comfort of his home in his Secui form. He began to jog, moving south along the coast. He kept up the pace for a few minutes, but slowed down when he noticed the form of an Infernian in the distance. He frowned, wondering if Corona had returned. She was the only yellow coyote he knew of, and it would be nice to see one of Gabriel's siblings return. Although she had not been as bloodthirsty as Hybrid or Kaena, she'd had a level head, and had not condoned Hybrid's actions (which was good enough for him). As he neared the other canine, he began to question his initial assumption. She had a different scent, and it was nothing like Corona's.

"Hey," he called out sharply, moving closer. He frowned, letting his arms hang loosely at his sides. He did not know what to do with them, so he just left them where they were. He would figure it out later.

For a moment Rikka turned to look out over the bay, admiring the way the water and moon went together. It was a beautiful sight, one that seemed strangely out of place in the lands of the clan. A silent sigh was given to the air as she looked up at the pale face that reflected the light of the sun. “Do either of us fit here?” She had thought that maybe releasing that question to the universe would make her feel lighter, or even better; give her some kind of cosmic answer. Nothing came to her though. No breath of wind, not even the lapping of a wave. Not even Mother Nature knew if that question could be answered. It was something she would just have to discover for herself.

The hybrid turned back around and threw some of the blankets on top of the pile into the cave. She’s throw them all as far in as she could before she crawled inside to try and arrange them. The approach of another failed to reach her until the voice cut through the empty night like a knife. Her head turned to the source, hair whipping around in the sudden movement. It was a male, much more coyote than she. Why was he frowning? Frowns were still strange and foreign expressions to her. “Hey,” she responded. “What’s happening?” It seemed he wanted something, though what that something was she wasn’t sure. People who moved with such dead purpose always seemed to have their mind fixed on something.

The yellowish coyote had entered her den for a moment, but re-emerged quickly enough once she heard Hybrid's call. She moved quickly, and for a moment, Hybrid wondered if he had startled her. The female was a slightly paler version of her sister, and Hybrid wondered if the two were related. He wouldn't be surprised to find out they were cousins of some sort, considering how closely connected Inferni was, and how many family members were coming and going. Even Hybrid's own family had shown up for a time, with his mother instigating the Dahlian war.

As the hybrid turned, Hybrid noticed her coat was not as solid as Corona's, with flecks of silver and grey streaking down her back. Soon enough, she spoke, repeating Hybrid's greeting back to him, then posing a question. Hybrid's frown deepened, wondering who she might be. He shrugged in reply, not sure what to say. He had not really thought very far ahead as to what he would say to her when she saw him, or if he even wanted to talk to her. Hybrid was now in a conversation. Damnit.

"You looked familiar; I thought you were someone else for a moment. Who are you?" He posed his question without a pause, allowing his words to flow into one another. He hadn't really thought out his reply too well, either. He clenched his jaw, wondering if there was something else he should say, or if he could just leave once she answered his question. She would probably ask who he was in return, too. Hybrid couldn't remember if he had introduced himself, but he didn't think it really mattered, did it? She probably would not want to speak with him anyways, and if she did, Hybrid did not think she would have anything interesting to say anyways.

The man before her seemed a peculiar one. When he responded his frown only grew and she thought the corners of his lips might fall off his muzzle. It would have been rude of her to ignore him and not respond, that would have certainly warranted a deepened unpleasant expression, but she had done no such thing. All Rikka had done was to greet him back and ask a simple, innocuous question. Her head tilted slightly to the side, her eyes displaying her curiosity for his bizarre reaction. Silently she had to tell herself, once again, that this was Inferni and not The Haight and so things were much different here. Still, even in that context the male’s behavior seemed odd to her. He didn’t seem particularly unfriendly, but he was far from warm and welcoming also. Maybe, like Halo, he didn’t realize she was a member here and thought she was an intruder.

When he finally spoke again the words were rushed and it took her mind a moment to be able to separate the words from one another and make sense of them all. It didn’t take much guessing as to who he probably had thought she was. Not many sported such a coat and he had most likely confused her with her sister Corona. “I’m Rikka de le Poer. I came back not too long ago.” If he knew who Corona was and what family she belonged to then he would be able to deduce that Rikka was of the same blood. “Who’re you?” she asked in a lighter tone, hoping to maybe brighten the mood of this encounter even a smidge. It might be a lost cause, but it was simply the way the peaceful hybrid conducted herself and her interactions with others. Hopefully now that he knew who she was he would chill out a little bit.

Hybrid's expression changed slightly when Rikka identified herself. He wasn't sure what he looked like, but he narrowed his right eye a little, trying to figure out who she was related to. She looked a lot like Corona, so his guess that she was a sister, aunt, or niece was possible. And the Lykoi and de le Poer names seemed to be mixed up between the children. If she was a de le Poer, this meant she was some sort of relative of Gabriel's. Hybrid knew Gabriel's father Ahren also carried the name, so she had to be related to that side of the family. Regardless of how she was related, Hybrid realized that he would have to see her as an extension of Gabriel's family. He supposed it didn't really matter how she was related to Gabriel — simply that she was. There was no other reason to care who she was, anyways. If she were some unknown Corona lookalike, he doubted he would have even continued the conversation. However, his obedience to the Aquila demanded he reply.

“Hybrid Holocaust,” he replied evenly. He blinked, wondering if she would want any more information from him, or he should demand any more from her. He did not need to know any more than he knew now — he was satisfied enough. However, Hybrid felt as though something else — his curiosity, perhaps — required him to ask more questions. “Hydra,” he added. “What do you do?” he asked, almost as an afterthought. He wasn't sure if he cared at all, but he supposed he could try to engage in small talk, even if he was absolutely rotten at it. Of course, he supposed he might be better at it if he cared about other coyote's replies. Unfortunately, Hybrid was too self-centred and egotistical to honestly care. As a result, he was fairly reclusive, and rarely spoke to anyone, unless it was to express his distaste.

One of his eyes squinted at her as if he were trying to solve some sort of puzzle. She stood stock still, feeling a little bit self conscious at being scrutinized so openly. Being such a black sheep as she was she was used to being judged, but not quite so obviously and from a complete and total stranger. It didn’t look like they were related though she knew that meant very little. She had been gone for so long and the Lykoi and de le Poer family trees were so extensive it was impossible to say for sure that they shared no common blood. He did look a good deal more coyote than the majority of her family however, so she took that as a fairly good indicator. Also if her name hadn’t immediately alerted him to how she was connected it probably meant that he wasn’t a member of Kaena’s brood. It seemed they all did a good job of knowing the names of even wayward family members here.

The name that he offered did not ring a bell and so she felt fairly secure in her assumption that they were not related. “Good to meet you Hybrid.” Old habits were hard to break and it would have been awfully rude of her to say that it wasn’t nice to meet him. He didn’t seem like the type that she would spend a lot of time with, but simple courtesy was a must with her unless someone did something severe to prove they didn’t deserve it. He stated his rank and it did not surprise her that he was a warrior type. The next question he posed caught her off guard however. “What do I do? Uhh, well, not really sure. Still kind of getting settled in.” She could have said that she was a pacifist that liked to smoke and sleep around, but somehow she doubted he would have found that as an appropriate answer.

Her reply surprised Hybrid. Never had anyone been pleased or happy to meet Hybrid. In fact, most of his meetings ended rather poorly, and even the ones that ended well often began poorly. Most of his meetings with Samael began with one of them drawing blood and ended up with them having sex. He still wasn’t sure why that was — no, that was a lie; he knew exactly how it happened — but it was recurring theme Hybrid did not want to end any time soon. Thus, when Rikka said she it was good to meet him, Hybrid did not know what to say or do. Instead, he resorted to the only answer he knew: a gruff reply and an awkward jerk of his head.

“Yeah,” he replied, not sure what to say to the yellowish hybrid. Luckily, Rikka piped up again, effectively telling him nothing. No, that wasn’t true; Hybrid now knew for certain that was a recent joiner of the clan, though, one would have had to be stupid not to realize that. And Hybrid was certainly not stupid (or at least, he hoped he wasn’t).

Hybrid offered another awkward reply, not sure what he could say. “Err,” he began, then stopped. “That’s... nice,” he stated blankly. He was quickly running out of small talk, and he did not know how to make it less obvious. Perhaps he could ask her where she had been before? No, that wouldn’t work; he did not care. Perhaps he could ask her if she’d met Gabriel, or perhaps Kaena? Again, Hybrid did not really care. Her answer to either question would not change much, and he suspected she would not care to answer his poor attempts at making conversation. He tried one last time, hoping it would not fail.

“Have you met anyone interesting?” he queried, trying to sound interested. Perhaps she had met Samael. He felt the corners of his mouth twitch in amusement at the thought. She would certainly tell him if she had.

Sorry, this reply is kind of weird o_O SoSuWriMo 410

Maybe meeting Hybrid wasn’t entirely pleasant, per se, but she wasn’t unhappy or uncomfortable, it was only a little awkward. Rikka expected such awkwardness around clan members she didn’t know yet. She knew how the majority of them thought and operated and anyone who spent more than a minute with her could tell that she was not like that in the least. Just because it was awkward didn’t mean that she was going to give up and not get to try and know him, or anyone else here. As long as things remained civil then she would never walk away from a meeting or conversation (not to mention she was at her cave and so there was nowhere for her to walk away to).

His short and halting replies continued and the woman calmly waited for another opportunity to talk and perhaps find a subject that he could find more interest in. She could really talk about anything as long as it didn’t involve violence and blood and guts. Her lips upturned in a small smile as he hesitantly said that that was nice. “Yeah, it’s not too bad. Hopefully I’ll figure out what I can do to help soon.” Though honestly she had no clue what she could do to assist the clan. She would not fight. Perhaps she could patrol the borders and nicely warn wolves away before they got a more violent response from some of the other members. That she could do. Though whether or not the rest would approve of such tactics was hard to say.

The next query he posed gave her more of a chance to talk at length which would do them both good she figured. “Yeah, I’ve met a few. Met Anselm, he seems like a really cool guy. Had a smoke with him and talked about things. Met Halo too, though not sure what to make of her. Threw a rat at me when I was asleep, so things didn’t start out on the best foot.” Rikka had a feeling that Hybrid wouldn’t care about the people she had met outside the clan. Now that she realized that she had met so few in Inferni she felt a bit guilty for not being around more. Of course she knew Kaena and Gabriel too, and Vieira, but she wanted to stay away from the topic of her mother’s relationship with the young coyote (if it could even be called a relationship).

She was rather boring, Hybrid conceded. He supposed it was a little like being around Corona, though, with Corona he'd felt an odd itch in his chest that told him he wasn't being judged so much as disapproved. With Rikka, however, he felt no real emotions toward her; not anger, malice, agreeableness or comradery. If anything, her easy-going banter simply annoyed him, but it did not aggravate him like he would have expected. In fact, it made him feel a little tired, and her cheerful voice could have easily lulled him to sleep. He shook his head quickly, trying to make himself focus. She'd paused for a moment, but soon enough, she was talking again. Hybrid watched her mouth move with agitated indifference, wondering if anything she said would matter. Rikka mentioned having met two members of Inferni, both of which Hybrid rarely — if at all — interacted with. After casually suggesting to Anselm that they go somewhere and have some fun (though he supposed asking someone, You want to fuck, or something? wasn't very casual), Hybrid had neither seen nor spoken to Anselm. The Caelum had disappeared, then reappeared, and since then, they had never spoken. He had seen Anselm in passing at pack meetings and at the Halloween gathering, but he had only spoken to his superior once, and it had delved into a discussion of sexuality and differences between wolves and coyotes. Hybrid still did not know what to make of the Caelum — though, he knew with a great deal of certainty that he was most certainly not gay. Although, Hybrid supposed it was rather humorous — coincidental, perhaps, and maybe even ironic — that he had knocked up Anselm's daughter.

When Rikka mentioned Halo's name, Hybrid's frown turned into an annoyed grimace. He did not like Halo. He did not hate her, but he did not like her either. He cared nothing for the girl, and would advise Rikka to do the same.

“She doesn't make very good first impressions on anyone,” he agreed maliciously. The first time he had met her, she was wearing human clothing, and incredibly ridiculous human clothing at that. Hybrid found his sneer deepening at the thought, still annoyed that Vitium's vermin was allowed to live in Inferni and do as she pleased.

Lol, I know! Rikka and Hybrid are the ultimate odd couple XD Awwww, it's okay. I know it's quite hard for someone to win Hybrid's fancy :3 SoSuWriMo 348

She wasn't sure what to make of this conversation or her companion. He certainly didn't seem very interested in her or what she had to say. Still, Rikka would take him finding her boring to flat out not liking her any day of the week. Also, no matter how one sided it was, this talk was going much better than the talk she had had with her niece had. That had been one of the most odd encounters she had had in recent times. Honestly no one had ever started out a meeting with her by throwing something at her before, least of all a rat. Things hadn't really improved from that point either. At first Halo had seemed to be another Lykoi purist who valued her clan and blood above all else and would kill for them without question. However when they had touched on the subject of her father and Rikka had said she could at least thank Vitium for giving her her family she had snapped about it, pointing out the many flaws the Lykoi clan had. The woman had been horribly confused by the whole ordeal, though it seemed that she was not the only one who had a hard time getting on with Halo. Hybrid's grimace spoke for itself.

"Well, with the way our first meeting went I can't say I'm surprised. She seems a little up and down, emotion-wise." Rikka could only guess at what she did with those rats she carried around. With how thoughtlessly she threw them around it was clear that they were not simple pets and she didn't doubt their purpose was something dark and unsettling. Shrugging she figured they could leave the topic of Halo behind. Despite her having mixed feelings about the girl she didn't feel the need to go badmouth her. "So, anything interesting been going on around here lately?" Rikka was horribly ignorant to the recent happenings of the clan. She had heard about the fire (and seen its aftermath) and heard about the war with Dahlia de Mai, but that was about it.

Hybrid opened his mouth to reply to her first comment, about to note how Halo was a female and that, like any other female, she was prone to outbursts and violent displays of emotion. He wanted to mention how Halo was a fool, and that Rikka would be of a good mind to stay away from her, for the Hastati was the spawn of a traitor and had the blood of a wolf flowing through her (no doubt). But then Rikka posed a question, one to which he had no answers. In fact, considering the type of coyote Hybrid was — malicious, solitary, and rather annoying, too — it was no surprise he knew absolutely nothing of what was going on in the lands. He devoted his time to stalking up and down the borders, killing things, killing things to eat, and whining about how they should be off eradicating the wolf population. Few paid him much heed, and since the only creatures he willingly spoke to were Gabriel, Samael, and now Kaena, it was no surprise that he knew nothing of the goings-on. That was Anselm's job, and all of his little spy friends, not Hybrid's. Certainly, he had met a few other inhabitants of Inferni, but it would not be much of an exaggeration to say Hybrid 'really didn't get out much.'

“Not a clue,” he replied blankly after a few moments consideration. He frowned, trying to recall what he had done recently. “A few months ago, Kaena and I killed some wolf girl or other. There was some stupid foreign kid named Silas who hassled me a while ago. Pretty sure he's joined. I don't know how, either. Kaena gave him an ultimatum — and he did it, fuck,” he stated, his frown deepening. Stupid fucking annoying, weak little foreigner.

It was lucky for the both of them that Hybrid did not get a chance to voice his specific thoughts on Halo and females in general, for it would have turned their encounter very sour very quickly. Not only a pacifist, Rikka was an adamant feminist and such statements would have severely irked her. She wouldn't have lost her temper, but she certainly would have started a debate on the subject and when she believed herself to be right she would not back down and chances were Hybrid would not have backed down either. It would have just been an incredibly messy way to end the evening and so it was good that he had been distracted by her question. His initial response made her feel a little better about being ignorant to the clan's goings on. At least she wasn't the only member who was a little clueless on current events.

However his next bit of news made her smile disappear quite quickly and her face turned into a drawn and strained neutral expression. This was exactly the sort of thing that she did not want to hear about. The fact that it involved her mother did nothing to help either, considering she was still quite upset about Kaena deciding there was nothing wrong with keeping another coyote as a slave. At least he went on to talk about something a little less troubling and so Rikka did her best to focus on that. "What kind of foreigner?" It seemed the safest question to ask out of everything Hybrid had talked about.

“A stupid one,” he replied quickly, then added: “how should I know?” He punctuated the last four words with a frown and a twitch of his mouth. He wanted to force the corners of his lips down even more to express his distaste, but he already seemed to be frowning and could not frown any more. “He trespassed. And then he had the gall to act surprised when I told him to leave!” Hybrid's dislike for Silas ran stronger than perhaps his dislike for Halo. Unlike his displeasure with the other Hydra, the dislike he held for Silas was personal and stemmed from their meeting. In contrast, his dislike of Halo was mostly out of principal and resentment that he now had to share his title as Hydra with another. He had carried the rank of Gladius, and later Hydra, for nearly two years, and now he was being forced to recognize another whose strength he knew nothing of. He didn't like it, but he would persevere.

Hybrid glanced toward the girl before him, as if noticing for the first time that he was conversing with exactly that: a girl. He supposed he could at least converse with her, but he did not expect her to have inherited her mother's strength. If anything, her sad, doe-eyed expression inspired the beginning rustling of dislike deep within his stomach. Hybrid wondered if the girl had anything useful to say.

“Wolves never learn though,” Hybrid added at last. “Can't respect something as simple as a border.” Instead of finishing these words with a frown, Hybrid simply remained silent and pensive, knowing he could not express his dislike of wolves without extreme actions. He could easily go on a tirade against their species, but he did not know how to express his thoughts eloquently enough to bother. Certainly, being a coyote, she had heard the arguments before and understood them well.

If there was one thing that most clan members could not stand it was weakness and she did not want to exude that vibe in the least. She didn't think herself to be weak, but she knew that most around here probably would consider her as such. She didn't fight, and she didn't condone Inferni's violent measures, and so most would think her unworthy. It was abundantly clear that Hybrid would be one of those, though she would try and stave off that opinion as long as she could. Swallowing, she tried bring up a counterpoint to the issue, though she had a feeling it probably wasn't something the male wanted to hear. He didn't seem the type for civil discussion. "Maybe it was just a misunderstanding? Perhaps someone had told him he could visit them?" She didn't know if any in Inferni would have extended such an invitation. Probably not. Still, it was a possibility.

And there it was, the prejudice towards wolves. Her ear flicked in annoyance quickly before returning to its prior position. Getting into a debate about this wasn't a good idea with this one, she could tell that now, but Rikka could be stubborn as a mule and unless she knew it was going to cause severe problems found it difficult to keep her mouth shut on subjects she felt strongly about. "I've seen coyotes disrespect borders just as often as wolves. I think we just notice it more here because many haven't lived other places," like I have. "It's more a personality problem than a species problem." The de le Poer knew that her words would send this conversation downhill and fast, but it wasn't in her nature to just stand by and be silent about such things.

“Meeting on clan lands? Then the Infernian was equally at fault. You don't just bring wolves around here,” Hybrid stated with a sneer. Though it felt wrong to be justifying his opinion like this, he was very certain the foreigner had not been invited. The wolf had just been wandering around the borders when Hybrid had found him; there was no way he had been invited. And if he had, well, the wolf had nothing to prove for it. Hybrid probably wouldn’t have believed him anyways if he had been invited.

Hybrid decided to try and voice his ideas, as he felt Rikka would not let him get away with just those two sentences. There was far more to the situation than she understood. For her to accurately grasp the situation, he would have to explain the incident all over again. Hybrid still did not know why wolves demanded respect when they traipsed around their borders; after all, clan lands and pack lands were sacred grounds. They were someone's home, and Hybrid could not tolerate someone walking in to his home and making foolish demands. The worst part was that the stupid foreigner had -- for whatever reason -- decided to join Inferni. At the time, it seemed like he'd tried to justify his intrusion by claiming he was joining, but Hybrid suspected he was just trying to evade death. What a fool!

“He was trying to convince me of shit he didn't even believe in,” he complained, wishing he could adequately express his annoyance with the Syemv bastard. The kid said the same words the wolves in Syemv had spoken -- he was just like them. Just another water wolf coming in and messing everything up.

Rikka's second comment made Hybrid pause. He didn't understand the premise of her logic. Why would a coyote want to venture into wolf territory? That did not even make sense. The entire point of having clan lands were to remain in them. The were supposed to cover enough territory to give him adequate room to hunt, while keeping everyone out of everyone else's fur. Of course, when it came to wolves, that obviously did not work. Nonetheless, Hybrid did not understand what Rikka was trying to say. Did coyotes voluntarily go to wolf packs? The only reason Hybrid could think of was to spy on the wolves to obtain information. In that case, if they were caught, they should be disciplined. Anyone who can't perform their job as a spy properly was useless. What kind of spy gets caught? A pretty shitty one, that was what.

“Why would a coyote go to a wolf pack? That doesn't even make sense; no one would want to anyways,” he replied, effectively refuting the de le Poer girl's argument. Although Hybrid had felt his frown begin to melt away as he puzzled over Rikka's question, he quickly realized that it had returned. Now that he had taken time to consider her question and his reply, he found himself growing annoyed. Why would someone even think something like that? What kind of sick bastard was she?

No matter how much she wanted to counter what Hybrid said, on this point he was right. Rikka wouldn't dare invite any friends that were wolves to the clan. It was simply too dangerous for them. She would tell them to meet her int he city or some other place where their well being would not be put at stake. She wouldn't go so far as to say that whoever might have invited the foreigner was at fault, but they should have been a bit more careful as to choose where to meet up. It was too easy for someone who couldn't abide wolves at all, like Hybrid, to run across them while they were waiting at the borders and then there would only and always be trouble. Of course she wished that things were different, but the simple fact of the matter was that they weren't. She didn't think it was right, but on this certain topic she couldn't say that the Hydra was wrong. Inviting any wolf to the clan's doorstep was just asking for trouble. Even the kind hearted and hopeful woman would not have done such a thing. Hybrid's next words confused her though. "What do you mean?" It seemed that Hybrid was figuring things out in his head and yet was not voicing all of the details that she needed to be able to follow along.

Rikka also didn't understand how the male could not think that coyotes would go near wolf lands. This conversation seemed to be getting weirder and weirder by the minute. By the confused look on Hybrid's face she could assume that he was having similar feelings as well. "Curiosity, wanting to cause trouble, or find something out," she said, shrugging. "The same reasons that any wolf would come here. We aren't that different from them, really. There's bad eggs in every batch but that doesn't mean they're all rotten." She had little doubt that he would find this statement of her's just as preposterous as the last, but it was the way she thought and she was giving voice to those ideas. Rikka was the odd man out here, she knew, but that wouldn't stop her from saying what she believed.

Hybrid stared at the girl blankly with poorly-masked hostility. He was beginning to wonder if there was something wrong with her: all these strange questions and suppositions, and now she had nothing to show for it. What do you mean? as if she hadn't been listening. Hybrid had listened to her, and very politely if he might add; why couldn't she do the same for him? Though, he supposed it wasn't so much her not listening as her not understanding. And he supposed it worked in both ways: he could not understand what she was trying to tell him, and she could not grasp the concepts he presented to her. Hybrid didn't want to say it, but maybe they were just both stupid. How foolish.

Hybrid frowned, wondering what he should do first: address her question, or comment on her statement? He supposed since she asked the question first, he would reply to it first. But all this damned talking was making his head hurt. He did not normally converse this much. In fact, he went two months in the summer without speaking to anyone at all. That had been a nice time.

“The foreigner lied. He trespassed and then pretended he'd wanted to join all along. He took the coward's way out. He should have just left when I told him to, not argued with me and continued the lie,” Hybrid replied in reference to the girl's question. He frowned, then decided to comment on her second statement. “And regarding trespassing: okay, fine, maybe some coyotes do trespass -- for whatever reason. But if you're spying, you shouldn't go around getting caught. And if you're curious, then... I don't know. Why would you be?” He paused as his frown deepened. “Why would you need to be? No one needs to leave Inferni. Not really. ” He never had left Inferni, and he'd turned out fine. Nothing like this weird girl.

This was like arguing with a brick wall, and she knew that it applied equally to Hybrid talking to her as well. The two might as well have been born on different planets for all the good this conversation was doing. Still, she wasn't inclined to walk away from anything unless things started getting nasty and she was far from the end of her patience. He could just as easily walk away too and if he was going to stick around and continue to debate things then she would give him the benefit of the doubt and do the same. She doubted that it would really accomplish anything, but she didn't have anything better to do right now. Except maybe smoke one, but she could do that afterwords. Surely it would help to ease the tension that was growing thick in the air around the two clan members.

How Hybrid was so sure that this other canine had lied to him was beyond her. Some people weren't very good liars, and maybe this foreigner had been one of those, but that didn't seem too likely. The oddest thing he said though was the part about it being the coward's way out. The only time she had ever heard that term applied was to suicide, never to lying. It did seem like the male had a point though, trespassing and then fighting with one of the members wasn't exactly protocol behavior for wanting to join a certain group. Still, if he had ended up joining maybe he just didn't have very good manners. "How do you know he was lying, since he did end up joining?" Rikka wasn't the type to take anything at face value and always poked and prodded to get as much information as she could before she decided to pass judgment on it. It was clear that things hadn't been handled well on the newcomer's part, but she wasn't about to dub him a liar for no discernible reason.

At Hybrid's last couple sentences her mouth creased into a thin, slightly down-turned line. Did he honestly believe that? It was ridiculous, one of the most ridiculous things she had ever heard. Of course people needed to leave Inferni sometimes, whether it was for food or supplies or what have you. "Some people don't like closing themselves off into one tiny pocket of the world." She never had. She didn't know many that did. Even her family members had interactions outside of the clan. "This one little spot of land is minuscule when compared to the whole world, and the world has a lot to offer." One just had to open their eyes and their mind to accept it.

He did not understand why she continued to doubt him. He had patrolled the borders for years now, and he had seen honest coyotes and well-meaning hybrids, but he had also come across lying scumbags. The foreigner had come, spewing words Hybrid had heard years ago, when Inferni had been at war with Syemv, or Aremys, or whatever the hell they'd been calling themselves. Hybrid had heard the low-throated gargling noises enough to be able to identify them as the words of the wolf pack. After Vitium had betrayed them for a Syemv wolf, there was no way Hybrid would have ever allowed them to enter Inferni. Unfortunately, this hybrid had crossed the borders and he would not retreat. If only they would listen when Hybrid demanded they back the fuck up, they wouldn't have these sorts of problems.

“You doubt me?” Hybrid demanded at last, seething that this nobody de le Poer could waltz in and start asking around. Of course he'd known the foreigner had been lying. “He joined as an escape,” Hybrid added. This time, his words were accompanied by a low growl. “I've been doing this long enough to know. And sometimes you have to do shit like that. Threaten them. My job isn't to cater to lost puppies. I protect Inferni, and if that means sometimes we have to show some teeth, I'll do it,” he added, almost as a threat. “You may care about the world out there, but my world is here. I do what I have to. My loyalty is here, and I do what I must to keep it so,” he concluded. Rikka might fancy herself to be learned, cultured, or intelligent, but Hybrid had to be the smarter of the two. He had lived in Inferni for most of his life, and when he'd left, he had been miserable. Now, he did what was demanded of him to keep the clan safe. If anything, he acted the way he did to keep coyotes like Rikka safe. Certainly, he was selfish, and many times his actions had been tinted red with his pride. But in the end, it didn't really matter, because what he was doing -- the bigger picture -- was for the members of Inferni. If Rikka couldn't understand that, perhaps she really didn't belong in Inferni. If she was going to mope around and be miserable, perhaps she should simply betray the clan again and leave. That sort of selfishness Hybrid could not tolerate. But perhaps he would have to again.
