Inferni game #2, set near D'Neville Mansion. Backdated to Dec 31.

[html]
There was something markedly different about Inferni. Not the clan itself -- no, the clan would never change -- but the territory. The territory was blanketed in a thick layer of snow, but there was something different about the land around the mansion. Hybrid felt as though something very important was missing, or perhaps, simply different, but he could not figure out what. The overcast, cloudy skies made it difficult to discern what was what, with all of the snow blending in together. Even the D'Neville Mansion took on a totally new and different appearance. It was snow. Hybrid had seen it before many times, but this snowfall seemed to cover everything in sight. Hybrid hoped this would not cause any problems for him.

He slowly made his way through the territory, descending down a steep bank to a flat clearing. He paused for a moment, taking a long, deep breath as he examined his surroundings. There was something beautiful about the territory, but of course, Hybrid could appreciate little beauty in nature. All he understood was beauty through destruction. As such, the innocence of the snowfall was lost on him, the oafish brute he was. Hybrid smirked. It was rather chilly out.

The snow had come during the night, and Gabriel had woken to find it outside of his den. It had been a surprise to wake to, but the coy-wolf was not disappointed. Snow meant that the world would be dampened, that the world would become quiet, and he was ready for that. Yawning widely and stepping out into the cold, the scarred Aquila trotted down into the wide fields. It certainly looked different, Inferni, but Gabriel was glad for it. He had needed a change, and this seemed like something that nature had agreed with.
After a few long moments, a tawny figure appeared before him. Gabriel recognized it almost instantly, and did not slow his approach. One short bark announced his presence, and the burly coy-wolf picked up his pace to meet his Hydra head on. Behind him, Gabriel’s tracks left a straight path to his destination, though at this moment, he didn’t have any intent outside of simply passing the Hydra.

Hybrid let out a quick coyote yip in reply to Gabriel’s much deeper bark. He could see the Aquila barrelling toward him, and for a moment, Hybrid was worried that Gabriel intended to knock him over. Hybrid started to shuffle away, but found his grip was seriously lacking. He scrambled to get a good hold on the ground, but there was no ground to speak of. Panicking slightly, Hybrid stood completely still, trying to figure out why the ground underneath the snow was so flat and slippery.

Hybrid had little time to consider this, as Gabriel’s large form was soon upon him. Hybrid flattened his ears against his skull, frozen in the spot. He let out a relieved sigh when Gabriel sped past him. The coydog had gained a great deal of momentum from his descent down the bank; Hybrid wondered how he would handle the strange, slippery ground. Hybrid slowly began to make his way to where Gabriel was, taking one shaky step after the other. After taking five steps, he decided that enough was enough, and simply stopped his movements, waiting for Gabriel’s commands or demands.

With the snow as thick as it was, there was no obvious sign that they had ended up on a pond. It was undisturbed, and had been until Hybrid had arrived on it. Even then, there was no sign of soft ground under his feet changing to a much different, much more vindictive, slicker surface.

It was only by sheer luck that Gabriel had, up until that point, not hit the ice. As he passed Hybrid, one of Gabriel’s forelegs hit a thin patch of snow. The ice underneath was unforgiving, and startled, Gabriel scrambled wildly. His speed did little to help him, and in the sudden surprise of not having his feet under him, the coy-wolf scrambled against the slick surface. Unfortunately, his weight was poorly distributed, and Gabriel lost his balance and stumbled, landing hard on his chest.

From there, Gabriel slipped another few inches on his belly. Rather ungracefully, he lifted his head and shook it, trying to rid the ringing in his ears. Then, slowly, he went to push his body up—forgetting he was being watched. Before he had even made it halfway he was scrambling again, and then landed hard back on his stomach.

Gabriel was in absolutely no condition to issue any commands of the sort. At the moment, Hybrid was witness to a rather ridiculous display of momentum at its best. Although Hybrid knew very little about how physics worked, or at least, as it might be detailed in a textbook, he understood the basic concepts. He understood that, for one reason or another, the surface he was standing on was incredibly slippery. Furthermore, he also recognized that Gabriel's mass, speed, and forward projection would carry him across the surface until he lost momentum or crashed into something.

The thought of Gabriel crashing into something elicited a feral grin. Hybrid could not help but think of how ridiculous it would look. Although, he did not need to look far to see such ridiculousness. Gabriel slipped and tumbled to the ground, flopping about in a manner resembling a fish. Hybrid's grin widened as he watched his Aquila try to pull himself to his feet, only to fall again on his stomach.

Hybrid began to laugh. This was perhaps the funniest thing he had ever seen in his entire life, and he too found himself struggling to stand. He doubled over, cawing loudly, quite enjoying his superior's pain. He sat down abruptly, but was laughing so hard that he ended up just laying down, sprawled out on the ice on his side, unable to control his laughter. Gabriel, it seemed, was a very, very funny man. Gabriel, it seemed, was a very, very funny man. And Hybrid, it appeared, had absolutely no self control at the moment. He simply could not stop laughing, to the point where his sides were starting to hurt and his toes were starting to go a little numb from the ice. He could not stop and did not want to stop, so he simply continued laughing, allowing his head to rest on the ice, as he could no longer support it.

With his head ringing, and his chest now growing cold from its contact with the ice, Gabriel was slowly growing aware of a secondary noise. It was as unfamiliar and unwelcomed as a carrion bird, and irritated by the high-pitched guffawing, his ears rose sharply to find the source. What he found was perhaps the last thing he expected; Hybrid—cold, emotionless, mechanical Hybrid—lying on the thin sheet of snow (and much thinker ice underneath) laughing uncontrollably. Even though this was a new and unexpected thing to see, Gabriel was equally irritated that his Hydra had managed to see his moment of weakness and found it funny…or, rather, he found it hilarious.

Grunting, the amber eyed hybrid slowly pushed himself up again, tilting his feet just enough so that his claws were no longer trying to grip the slippery surface. Back over the mountain, there had never been any real experience with ice like this. Inferni had been located on a sandy strip of the beach and it never froze, given how much salt had existed in that world around them. Still, there was a conscious part of his brain that understood he needed to treat the ice like he might sand; to use his paw pads and keep his feet spread wide, in order to distribute his large mass.

This lasted about three steps towards Hybrid, whom Gabriel intended to throw into the snow bank, and then he went skidding forward again, falling once more on his chest ungracefully.

In between his desperate gasps for air and his loud guffaws, Hybrid managed to see Gabriel get up and begin making his way toward the fallen Infernian. Hybrid let out a last few fleeting chuckles as he slowly began to push himself into a sitting position. He hoped to achieve a more... optimal sitting position to better watch Gabriel and the hilarity he knew would ensue. Hybrid would not be taking any chances trying to walk — or run — since he knew what would happen. He had just witnessed a rather spectacular crash, and certainly did not intend to follow in his Aquila's steps. Hybrid wanted to be the one laughing and Gabriel to be the one flailing about. It was more — what was the word he was looking for? — fun that way.

Hybrid could see Gabriel struggling to make his way over to Hybrid, but again, it ended rather spectacularly. Gabriel fell to his stomach, and again, Hybrid found himself laughing with delight. He wanted to crow, again, again, again! and clap his paws together, but he knew he should at least try to show some restraint.

The constant barrage of that unfamiliar noise was boggling. Hybrid never laughed, least of all at Gabriel. It was an uncharacteristic display that infuriated the charcoal brushed hybrid, whom was using all of his willpower not to somehow get to his feet and make his way to Hybrid, grab him by the throat and throttle all that horrendous laughter out of him. Unfortunately, the ice was not aiding this at all. Slowly, and this time with greater care then before, Gabriel pushed himself up onto his haunches in order to give his chest a break from the ice. It was cold and hurt like hell, but whether that was because he was so angry or because of the impact from the ice he did not know.

“I’ll give you something to laugh about you goddamned prick,” he grunted, but did not move forward. What more could he do? Essentially, they were stranded on the ice together, like two old men caught out in a storm where neither of them could make it back. Gabriel so badly wanted to throw caution to the wind and get over to the tawny coyote, and maybe then he’d stop with the laughter long enough to beg for the abuse that was coming his way. He’d made Hybrid eat dirt before, and this time Gabriel would, once he closed the ten feet or so between them, make sure he did the same with ice. Until they, they were at a standstill. Or, rather, sit still.

In a split second, the mood changed, and Hybrid stopped laughing rather abruptly. Gabriel looked positively murderous and he pulled himself off his chest. Hybrid could see that the Aquila did not appreciate his laughter, but Hybrid knew if he fell over like Gabriel had, he would receive the same treatment. In fact, Hybrid suspected Gabriel would probably sit on him and rub his face in the strange slippery surface and smirk. Damn Gabriel and his smirks. Hybrid hated canines who smirked. It made them look like ridiculous egomaniacs, and Hybrid hated it.

Hybrid flattened his ears against his skull as Gabriel spoke and deepened his frown. Hybrid bit back a stupid retort, as he was not known for witty ones, glaring at his leader.

"Oh, fuck off, Gabriel, that was funny," he replied, glowering. Observe: not known for his witty retorts. "I'm fucking out of here." He started to slowly edge toward the snow bank, digging in to the surface with his claws. Like always, Hybrid was in his Secui form, which afforded him powerful retractable claws, better for gripping. He continued inching toward the bank, then stopped suddenly when he found his balance was weak. He glanced over his shoulder to see that he had journeyed a grand total of thirty centimetres. To his other side, the snow bank soared above him. It was far too tall for him to climb it, and he didn't know if there was more of the slippery ground hiding under the snow. He glanced at Gabriel, only then realized they were most certainly stuck.

Likely, had Hybrid fallen, Gabriel would have been in the same state as his thick headed Hydra. Of course, it wasn’t the coyote who had fallen flat on his face, but the large Aquila who had no purpose ending up on a frozen lake in the first place. Grunting and frowning rather grumpily, the coy wolf narrowed his eyes and focused his attention back on the copper coyote, glaring at him with all the daggers that his amber eyes could produce. They were not simply glaring daggers, but shooting fire and laser beams and all sorts of horrible thoughts in the direction of his now sour looking companion.

Hybrid’s comment made his face darken, but as he watched the coyote try and make his way to the edge of the lake, he found himself smirking rather widely, far too amused by the attempt. Grinning like a wildcat, Gabriel let out a loud, barking laugh, clattering the metal around his neck as his chest rose and fell. “Yeah, it’s real fucking funny now.” And it was, in some way, because man oh man what in the world were they going to do? Maybe if Gabriel could make it over to Hybrid he could throw him into the snow and get him out that way. Further amused by this idea, he laughed again. “I’m real impressed Hybrid. Guess maybe I should look into finding myself another Hydra if mine can’t get his ass off some ice, ah?” Further amused by this, his lips pulled up in a wolfish grin, something he could thank his father for.

Hybrid met Gabriel's sour look with one of his own, refusing to back down from the impromptu staring contest. Like everything between the two male coyotes, their meeting had quickly escalated to the status of a full-on war. Hybrid had not tasted war and battle in many months, so he relished this little conquest between him and his leader. Anything that put his wills to the test and pitted him against an 'enemy' was worthwhile for Hybrid. And so, he returned Gabriel's glares with one of his own, furrowing his brow in concentration. He felt his upper lip twitch as he tried to refrain from snarling. This was but a small war, not a full-blown world war. He needed nothing of the sort with Gabriel; he just needed a little competition to tide him over until the next war, until the next time he could spill some blood. Hybrid relished the challenge his Aquila offered him.

"Guess maybe I should look into finding myself another Aquila if mine can’t get his ass off some ice, ah?" he mimicked under his breath, still holding Gabriel's burning golden eyes with his own. Although he would never utter such treasonous words loudly, he allowed himself a small moment of annoyed cattishness. Hybrid could be incredibly petty when he wanted to, which was often. In fact, most of the time, in upholding his own twisted moral code, Hybrid managed to make enemies with everyone he met, and could easily take any comment the wrong way (sort of like how he’d done with Gabriel’s).

"Like you could do any better, Gabriel. I'm going to get out of here," he restated. He would escape from this strange slippery surface, and perhaps he and Gabriel could enjoy a romp through the territory and examine the borders. That would be a nice night out on town (once he figured how to get out of here, anyways). He broke his staring contest with Gabriel and continued to edge – ever so slowly – toward the snow bank, determined to show Gabriel he could escape.

They fought because it was required; Gabriel needed someone to push him, just as he needed a goat to take whatever abuse he needed to deal out. Haku Soul would hide behind his pawns as long as possible, playing a sick waiting game with the Aquila. One of them would break first and strike for the other, to wound and destroy and rend anything that would bring them together. By the end of days, Gabriel intended to have Haku’s head on a pike. Dahlia de Mai would crumble, and its leader with it. He hated the blue eyed wolf more then any other singular creature he had ever encountered before. More then his dead half brother, who had raped his daughter, more then the weasel that had once been his brother, and once he was able to, all hell would reign down on that bastard’s head.

But for now, Hybrid was his target. Gabriel didn’t manage to catch the muttered words, but his ears flicked, catching something. No doubt, an insult was made in his direction, but Gabriel couldn’t understand it and his jaw gritted furiously. Under his hind legs, the ice was sinking into his fur, making him numb around his bottom. Still, he did not rise from his seated position until Hybrid turned to leave. Almost instantly, the coy-wolf’s face fell, finding it unreal that his Hydra would abandon him for something so petty as bad mouthing him. And sure enough, as Gabriel stood on the cold surface and shifted, foot to foot, Hybrid did manage to make his way to the edge of the ice and onto the snow, where he was free to move freely.

And, staring at the reddish coyote’s backside, Gabriel’s amber eyes narrowed and his ears fell back. “You really plan on walking away from me?” He called out, stranded on the ice. “Help your Aquila, Hybrid. That’s your job,” he added, frowning and looking rather annoyed about the whole situation. There had to be a way to get off the ice, and blast it all, Hybrid was going to help him figure that out.

He was free! He was most jubilant and elated, for this feeling of sheer freedom was delicious, like nothing he had tasted before! Hybrid grinned, enjoying the feeling of being off the weird, dreaded surface, whatever the hell that had been. He grinned as he stared out across the snowy plain, eyeing it with distrust. He knew what that deceptively calm surface held, and he knew he was never going back on that again!

Hybrid's freedom was abruptly cut short with Gabriel's plea. Hybrid's mood quickly soured as he realized he was not as free as he had initially believed. A characteristic scowl replaced his awkward grin; Hybrid did not want Gabriel to appeal to him. Hybrid wanted to enjoy this freedom just a little bit more! But Hybrid knew his duty to his leader and his place within the clan. Hybrid would help the Aquila, but not without a grumble or two.

"My job is to kill things for you," he clarified, then stalked away. He needed to find some way to get Gabriel off of the ice and onto the snow. There were no branches or ropes lying around, so he would have to dig for them. He could possibly just throw things onto the slippery surface and have Gabriel walk on them. Then he would have a good grip on the ground.

With that in mind, Hybrid started digging through the snow to find sticks and things to toss on the ice. He found a bush (withered and dead, but still usable), and began to dig it out. After a few minutes of digging and yanking, Hybrid managed to free the bush from the ground. He trotted back over to where Gabriel was and threw the rather flat, sad-looking bush onto the slippery surface.

"If I get enough sticks and... stuff, you can walk on them, or something." He paused. Gabriel couldn't escape the way he had, since Gabriel was way out in the middle of the surface. Sure, Gabriel might fall, but Hybrid didn't think Gabriel would risk it. So once the leader was close enough, Hybrid might be able to extend a branch out and pull him back up. But until then, he'd have to find some other way to make this work.

For about half a minute, Gabriel was terribly worried that his Hydra was going to do what he promised and leave him stranded, like a fool, on the ice. Wouldn’t that be fantastic—Inferni’s great and mighty leader stuck in the middle of a pond like an idiot. The very thought made his chest deflate, and his ears swivel back as doubt began to creep in. Luckily, he did not have to wait and worry long. Hybrid came tromping back up from the snow with a bush in his mouth and tossed it unceremoniously onto the ice. A rather peculiar look crossed the Aquila’s face, wondering just what the hell Hybrid expected him to do with the bush. Of course, once it was explained, he found the idea worth trying.

Lifting one paw almost daintily, Gabriel placed it back onto the bush and found he did not slip as much as before. It was not enough to get him to the snow, but it was better then what he expected. Slowly, his expectations rose, showing in his body as his tail and ears returned to a much higher position. “Yeah, this looks like it should work,” he confirmed, and waited expectantly for the smaller man to finish with his task. Then he could smash his face in.

Hybrid would be the one wearing the Ed Hardy B(

[html]
Once Hybrid received Gabriel's approval, he returned to the bush to gather more sticks and trees. He continued to dig in the same area he had started, but the ground was hard and cold. This was not easy. If it were the summertime, then he could have done this with a lot less effort. Of course, if it were the summer, there would not have been any snow covering the strange surface and he never would have ventured on to it in the first place! Hybrid was starting to really dislike the winter. If only it could just be the summer all year around. That would be far more pleasant.

Hybrid continued digging, and slowly but surely, found more shrubs and branches to bring back to Gabriel. It took him a while, since most of it was hiding under a light layer of snow, and then buried beneath even more snow. But eventually Hybrid had created some sort of a walkway from Gabriel to the edge of the bank. It wasn't a red carpet, but it would have to do. Lastly, Hybrid dragged out a long branch he'd found and put aside. He pushed it to the edge of the bank, and then slowly lowered it down. He grabbed the top of the tree with his paws and hunkered down so he could hold the tree down, and so Gabriel could use it as a makeshift ladder.

"Okay Gabriel, come on up," he said at last, once he was certain this would work. There was no way Hybrid would ever leave his Aquila stranded on the strange surface; he did not know what it was, and would not leave anything to chance. He adjusted his grip on the tree so he had a better hold, then pressed his weight against it, making sure it did not wiggle away from him.

For every step that Hybrid took, Gabriel waited and listened to the sound of his Hydra in the snow. There were a dozen other sounds to be heard, but they were muffled by the snow. It was interesting, though, to see the way the coyote moved. He functioned as his breed was meant to, hopping through the snow as if he was hunting for small rodents. Eventually, there was a path laid out in dead branches and twigs. Gabriel’s large paws managed to climb over the ice, and once he reached the tree, he hesitated. If Hybrid could not hold his weight, they would both end up in worse shape then before.

Digging his claws into the wood, the Aquila tested the force and found it held. Confident that Hybrid had managed to set something useful up, Gabriel’s hind legs scrambled and pushed him up the branch. He hit snow and solid ground, partially trampling over his subordinate in the process. There was only a momentary pause, in which Gabriel turned, grabbed the smaller coyote by the scruff of his neck, and threw him into the snow drift. A low, rumbling growl stayed deep in his throat, but it was not as aggressive as it was displaying domination. He was intent on proving that no one got away with making him look like a fool, even if Hybrid had not been directly responsible.

Success! Hybrid found his freedom unceremoniously ripped from his hold, but understood that it was necessary. No matter how enjoyable his moments of freedom had been, and no matter how pleasant the aftertaste, it was insignificant in comparison to Gabriel's welfare. As the oldest Hydra (Hybrid sometimes fancied himself the unofficial "head" of the trio) and only consistent member, Hybrid's dedication lay with Gabriel's well-being. So he realized that he would have to sacrifice himself for the better of his Aquila -- and even, perhaps, Inferni. But he would never put Inferni before Gabriel. He knew his duty, and understood it well.

Thus, when Gabriel lashed out at him, Hybrid was taken completely unaware. Never would he have thought his steadfast loyalty would be rewarded with such a brutal attack. Gabriel's claws twisted into Hybrid's neck as he threw him, and Hybrid felt himself leave a tuft of fur and a bit of flesh behind with his leader. Hybrid tumbled to the ground, rolling awkwardly through the snow. His movement only stopped when he made contact with a root, one which he had dug at and ripped apart. The jagged pieces of the tree stuck up awkwardly, and made contact with Hybrid's spine. Hybrid whined lowly in pain as he lay in the snow, wondering what Gabriel might do next. He raised his eyes for a split second, but remained still, allowing his anger to begin bubbling up in his chest. Yes, the sweet taste of freedom had been replaced by bitter resentment; and what a foul taste it was.

This is super short, sorry. ;-; I feel horrible.

By all accounts, of the three Hyrda, it was Hybrid whom Gabriel trusted without a doubt. Though they had a rocky relationship, never once had the Aquila ever considered that one day the coyote might turn on or abandon him. Because of this, and in no means in spite of it, there was a right and a reason in what he was doing. He approached the smaller man calmly, and no part of the previous violence read in his body language. “Don’t ever,” he said pointedly. “, laugh at me.” He didn’t like it. He didn’t like it one bit.

Then, satisfied that his point had been made, Gabriel sat in the snow and stared at his companion. He didn’t apologize—he did not believed he needed to. It was apparent, however, that he was not going to inflict any further violence on the man. Gabriel was a monster, but he was no devil.

That's okay; it was a lovely post. I hope this is of the same calibre.

The two stared at one another. Hybrid could not break his Aquila's gaze, for he was locked in, his eyes trained on the bloody, golden eyes of his superior. As Gabriel approached, Hybrid could feel himself unconsciously tensing up. The history of violence had long since been etched into Hybrid's muscles, and now, after having been thrown at least a metre, he suspected more violence would follow. As a creature of habit, Hybrid understood only that which he had been taught. Unfortunately for him, all he knew was violence and loyalty. The two were so intrinsically linked that Hybrid wondered how he had not lost every semblance of his own identity. He still had his free will, but only to an extent. He had restrained it and beaten it back with the same force he had beaten back intruders with.

Rage danced in Hybrid's eyes as Gabriel spoke, growing ever more as his Aquila threatened him. Hybrid understood Gabriel's reasoning, but he did not want to. It sickened him that he could accept this, and how it proved his lack of an identity. He was nothing. This fact alone bothered him, but not its ramifications: he was nothing, but to Gabriel, he could be something. Hybrid felt his lip twitch as he attempted to bare his fangs at his leader, to show some semblance of resentment or hostility. But Hybrid understood, and he understood his leader too well, just as Gabriel understood him. Hybrid knew it was not an equal trade-off -- there were many things he would never know about the doggish coyote before him. This, too, he resented; but not in a way that that he could adequately express.

Hybrid's goals were simple, and for this reason, his answer was, too: "then don't betray me," he replied, hoping Gabriel would understand. "Ever," he clarified. Hybrid's duty was to Gabriel, but Gabriel's duty was to Inferni. If Gabriel ever broke his bonds to the clan, Hybrid would break Gabriel, and himself, too. If anything, Hybrid's reasoning was simple and precise. He was nothing more than a machine programmed to fulfil his duties.

But Hybrid still trusted Gabriel completely.

Your post far outclassed mine. :[ One reply from you and I think we can wrap this up?

That certain and unwavering fury was something that Gabriel respected. Hybrid could hate him. Hybrid could feel any number of things for Gabriel as long as this did not compromise his loyalty. There was no doubt in him that of the coyotes who lived within Inferni’s borders, Hybrid and Hybrid alone would be the last to fall at his side. They were bound through bloodshed and the equal bond of the clan itself. In this way, they were brothers—something that meant much more to Gabriel then a once-mate and her false name.

So as Hybrid spoke, Gabriel’s eyes did not waiver from the crimson stare. They remained as fierce and steady as a hawk’s glare, threatening to swallow the color around them. He understood, in a way, the threat that was being made. It resonated as loudly through his bones as a roll of thunder. His place was here, standing between the mountains and the wolves, and it always had been. Death before dishonor; he would never become his mother. Satisfied that his point had been made, the coy-wolf remained where he was, unwilling to walk away as if this might break that unspoken promise.
