A lone figure crouched behind the decaying shelter of a fallen tree, pale eyes just visible over it's jagged bark. The small female's coat was a shaggy mix of grays and whites, with a dark "mask" on her face, ears and tail, as well as dark speckles splashed along her coat. Several long, fresh scars ran along the back of her hips and legs, a shocking pink against the dark gray of her fur.

Her ears twitched to and fro as she stood abruptly, following the sounds of prey and predator alike. Unable to stop herself, she shivered, desperately wishing that her coat wasn't so unnatural in it's thinness. The wind's icy fingers crept through her poor excuse for a coat and she bit back a sneeze. She would have to move on, if only to keep herself warm.

With one last glance behind her, she took a small step forward, visibly cringing as it landed on a dead leaf. The crunch was as loud as a gunshot in the quiet, or at least she felt that it was.

After a moment of scolding herself, she moved onwards, head low to ground and nose working desperately to catch the scent she'd been trailing for days. She wasn't sure how long ago the she-wolf had passed through, as the scent was nearly indistinguishable from the others... but she would have to try. The only way now was forward, as she certainly couldn't go back-- the ache from freshly healed wounds on her rump told her that.

She continued this way for a few minutes, picking her way through the snow covered ground as quietly as she could. She stopped abruptly as she came to the border, fighting the urge to pace nervously, as she shook herself instead. Her muzzle tipped upwards after a moment's hesitation and she howled, long and loud. The surprisingly haunting sound echoed loudly, sounding more confident than she could ever actually hope to be.

The sound faded off as she ran out of breath, and she sat down to wait, ears pinned against her skull in uncertainty.

The thin layer of fresh, crisp snow crunched melodically as the tawny female ran briskly through the territory. This morning, she had chosen to run in her lupe form, something she didn't often do. She needed to get used to running on all fours, though. It seemed like all she did lately was run on two legs.

The air was cool and refreshing as she loped along the border. She loved winter; it was always so calm and quiet. The cool air pressing to her heated body was heavenly.

A piercing howl rose through the still air, hovered for a brief moment before dying out and giving in to the silence once again. Andy froze in her tracks. It sounded close. The fur rose along her shoulders in alarm. The Tenens looked around her, unsurprised but disappointed to find that she was alone. Taking a deep breath, she padded silently along the border, towards the source of the sound.

With her ears alert, the slight female trotted carefully along. In the distance, she could see a solitary figure, sitting just before the boundary scent line. She narrowed her eyes, trying to get a better visual on the visitor. As she drew nearer, a scent reached her nostrils. She nearly stopped dead in her tracks from the shock. It was her old pack scent.. the one she had been with for a brief time before she had found the Valley. Her curiosity piqued, she sped up, wondering who this was, and whether she new them.

The figure began to take a clearer shape, and as it turned out, Andy did know her. It was her old friend, Callisto, from her old pack. Overjoyed, Andy broke into a full on gallop, her muzzle spread wide in a happy grin. She leaped at the other female, happy to have her old friend with her. She couldn’t help but wonder if she had come to join Phoenix Valley...

“Calli! I can’t believe it’s you? How did you find me?” she exclaimed, her tail wagging furiously.

Waiting was always the worst part. The urge to pace was rising as her anxiety spiked, but she sat resolutely in place, shivering in the chill. The unfamiliar territory was making her more than just a little jumpy, each snap of a twig and bird call echoing eerily in her ears. Not to mention the snow was now seeping into her already damp fur, and she cursed the thick clouds overhead that were stubbornly keeping warm rays of sunshine prisoner.

She had just resigned herself to a long wait when she heard another approaching, and she turned in curiosity. The other was still far off, but almost at once, the scent made her tail wag furiously- her entire body seeming to wiggle with the effort. She jumped to her feet excitedly, worries forgotten momentarily.

It was her! She couldn't believe her luck... rarely did things turn out so well the first time around.

She met the other female mid-leap, teeth bared in a feral smile as she pranced a small circle around the other. "Andy! You don't know how good it is to see you!" Her pale eyes were wide as she took in the other, impressed at how changed she seemed. "Look at you! You sure have grown!"

Abruptly, the joy in her eyes seemed to die a little and she sobered, "It's a long story..." She admitted, and looked up the way Andy had come. "You expecting company?" Callisto asked, having seen no one.

Her tail wagging non stop, Andy felt as if her body was shaking. Her face was spread in a wide smile. She looked around. “I’m not sure. I haven’t seen anyone around. Jefferson or Geneva will be here soon, they are the leaders here.” She paused, thinking. Don’t worry. They are much better than…” She trailed off. Needless to say, the pack that they had both been driven out of hadn’t been very.. friendly. Andy hadn’t stayed there for very long, but it had not been fun.

The Tenens lowered herself into a sleeping position, crossing her paws in front of her. “So, what are you doing here?” she asked, curious. She noticed the scares on her friends’ rump, and her anger spiked involuntarily. She took a deep breath to calm herself, wanting to hear the whole story.

When she had left that pack, it had been very hard to leave Callisto behind. The two had become fast friends, and the tawny female was overjoyed to see her again. If her suspicions were true, and her friend had been chased off, she hoped that she would be accepted here. It would be great if they could be pack mates again.

The chilly air, although it felt nice to Andy, seemed to be extremely uncomfortable for her companion. She rose to her paws and sidled next to the smaller female, pressing her thicker fur to her friends’ side. She hoped one of the leaders would be here soon. It was a very cold morning, and the clouds overhead promised no sun anytime soon. Even she, with her thicker fur, was beginning to shiver. When she was moving, the cold felt wonderful. But when she was laying in the snow, it was harder to appreciate the cool crispness.
