She had stayed in Twilight Vale for the last couple of days, but no longer. Ember didn't want to live there...even though it was the place that she had been spending most of her time lately. Her cousin had been recovering there for a few weeks, and then Ember had gone and broken her arm...They had set it for her in Esper Hollow, Nikita and Laurel had, but Naniko had put a better brace on it. She hadn't been able to actually put a cast around it because of the deep gashes that Ember had gashed into it with that knife...that had to heal first, and then she could have it bound up better.

She'd thought about things for a while, and had decided that this was defintely the right place for her. No one here would antagonize her or bully her...Pilot and Tayui would make sure, wouldn't they? She held onto her bad, tightly wrapped arm out of habit, biting her lip as she approached the border. Hopefully they would be willing to take her--she wasn't really good at anything, not even scouting, which had been her old job in Dahlia de Mai. The Lierre looked up to the sky, lifting her head and opening her mouth, letting out a long, low howl. I am here.

Werd up, I haven't done one of these in a while.

The howl wasn't one he knew, nor was the smell. Nevertheless, the were, still shifted and standing at his full eight feet, descended the hill down to the caller. His arm had healed from his battle with SteelRose with remarkable alacrity, so much so that it hadn't slowed him down much in his fight against the mysterious kidnapper. That had happened two days ago, and even though he'd promised Asphyxia to be good as new in two days, he was still sore. That wolf had conditioned his knuckles in some way, and they injuries they left seemed to heal more slowly for whatever technique he'd used.

Approaching the caller, he recognized a little black wolf. Phoenix's daughter. Phoenix, the friend who he'd lost, who he'd struggled to carry out of the burning lands, only to lose again when he returned there looking for his children. It was a sad thing, a very sad thing, and infinitely worse for Iskata and her children, Skoll suspected. Nodding toward the smaller werewolf, Skoll smiled slightly, glad to see a member of the Phoenix/Sadira family kicking around, though she did bear a strange wound.

"It's been a while since I've seen you, little one. We didn't talk, but I'm Skoll, a friend of your dad's. What can I do for you?"

She did remember him a little, though the memories of her puppy days had a certain haze over them. Probably from pack meetings, or the time that they had all spent clustered around Phoenix's bedside, taking care of him. Pilot and Dierdre had hovered over the leader, administering medicines, while she and her siblings had watched and worried. She remembered wondering if she, Icarus, and Kansas would become orphans; she hadn't seen her mother in what had felt like ages, at that point, and hadn't even considered Firefly a family member. Firefly was the reason her mother had left them all...to go and look for her.

And now Firefly was back, and causing trouble. Sleeping with every wolf she could get her hands on, some of Ember's friends, even...she couldn't believe it. Her sister didn't have any morals.

At the male's approach her tail wagged. She had heard that some of the old pack had taken up residence here, but wasn't sure who she would find. She only knew that Pilot was here. "I've left my pack, Dahlia de Mai. I don't agree with their fighting the coyotes, and I don't want to die to protect Haku. Cercelee, maybe....she's not done anything wrong. But Haku...no. I'm looking for somewhere to stay"

"Well," Skoll said, conflicted about her statement, but understanding to some degree. "No one wants to die. Any conflict which involves the civilians is a nasty one. I understand why you came. I can't see Pilot or Tayui turning you away, so why don't you walk in with me a little ways? If for whatever reason, they don't approve, you'll just be my guest for the day." He hadn't seen anyone in Phoenix's family since his heated discussion with Iskata, so this was a nice experience.

"How did your arm get hurt? Don't tell me it was Dahlia's war?" The idea of sending someone like her into such a thing seemed...well, dishonorable to him. He respected people who were willing to fight for what they believed in, but he also believed that people like himself were around so that people like Ember wouldn't need to fight.

"Nope, not in the war, heh. I wouldn't have been able to fight, anyway. I was already hurt before the real fighting even started." She grinned. Her entire left arm was a horrible mess, really. The only area that wasn't injured in some way was a few inches between her elbow and her shoulder. She still had the large gash in her shoulder, but now it had been stitched up so it looked a lot better. It was strange to put her hand up and feel the pieces of hard, plastic thread that held the wound together. It was infected, still, and hurt whenever she touched it even a little bit.

"Okay" She entered the borders, tail waving back and forth. "Hybrid got my shoulder with his claws a while back, but it kept splitting back open and getting infected. Nani stitched it up, so it doesn't look so bad and it'll heal faster." She walked with him, looking around. If this was to be her new home, she wanted to see as much of it as she could. And even if it wasn't going to be, she was still interested in seeing what there was here in Shadowed Sun. "Then I broke it. Or...got it broken. Firefly had a hold of me and I yanked it out of her hold...it snapped near my wrist"

I'm going to assume that Skoll is leading her deeper into the territory, probably toward Pilot or Tayui's den, so either leader can come in at any time.

Skoll winced slightly as she talked about the injuries she'd taken. He had endured worse, but to see Phoenix's daughter in such a state was a terrible experience. He didn't know who this Hybrid was, but if he met him, he would return the favor. And then some, if he had reason.

"Well, I'm glad that it didn't get hurt for their war. The last time I saw you, you were quite small...how old are you anymore?" It was strange to be speaking to Phoenix's progeny like this without knowing where he was or when he'd be back. It was possible that Phoenix was dead, but that hadn't been verified by Sarah, so he didn't know for certain. Still, it was odd that the family had split as it had. He was surprised the children hadn't just congregated around their mother.

Iskata had joined Labrynth Glen with Ember and Magdalena, but after it had disbanded she'd lost contact with her. She had thought about joining Twilight Vale, but Ember thought that Naniko and Conri's pack was a little weird. Everyone there was always really happy and smiling...like they were under some spell. She knew they probably weren't...they were just all happy...but it was still a little strange.

"Almost a year" She said proudly. "My birthday's the twenty second. It really has been a while." She walked for a little while without saying anything, then started up again. "What are things like here in Shadowed Sun?"

I'll try to get Tay or Pilot in here asap.

The walked in silence for a few minutes, before the girl piped up again. Taking a moment to consider her question, the bronze wolf shrugged. Not a whole lot was happening in Shadowed Sun, at least not as far as he was aware. The last big thing he'd had to do was deal with SteelRose, and after that it had just been a quiet period of healing, highlighted by periodic visits with Asphyxia.

"They are calm, peaceful," he said, letting the words hang in the air before going on. "We had some action recently, but nothing involving Inferni or any other pack politics. I don't think Tayui or Pilot have any intention of letting us become involved in the war between Dahlia and Inferni, at any rate, so you won't have to worry about that."

Tayui had heard footfalls only a short distance away from where she was seated, book open on her lap. She had spent the past half hour (or so) perusing the book with an intense interest. The book contained the history of the first few Roman Emperor's in a place called Italy. But back then, the book said it had been a part of the Roman Empire. The book was fascinating, and she found herself so engrossed in the affairs of the Emperor's- Augustus, who was not really an Emperor at all, then Tiberius, Caligula, Claudius and Nero. Although Augustus seemed to be the one that stood out for his intelligence, Tayui found that reading about Claudius was far more gratifying.

As such, she had not heard Skoll or his acquaintance until they were nearly upon her. She looked up, glancing around as they drew closer. She dropped her gaze back to her book, just barely catching the page and marking it with a leaf before it closed shut. She set the book aside, laying it on top of her book bag, standing up quickly. "Hello, Skoll," she said with a faint smile. She towered over the two, both of which were in their Lupus forms. Such was the case when one was in their Optime form. "Who's this?"

Out of turn, technically, but I didn't think you'd mind, James, since Tayui asked a question directly of Skoll. Plus it gets the pesky initial introduction out of the way =)

"Ember Phoenix," Skoll said, smiling, and sharing a slight, winsome look that he knew only Tayui would catch. They had both known the wolf that Phoenix's daughter was named after, and both were old enough to remember the tragedy of that tale. It was a sad thing, and one which he wasn't sure if Phoenix had ever shared with this Ember.

"She is looking for a home, since war has come to Dahlia." Quick and to the point. He expected that Pilot would be a better escort for Ember than he would be, but in the meantime it was good for her to be meeting Tayui. After all, she would be living under her authority from here on in.

ooc: Ember is actually in her optime form ^^; I probably didn't make it clear enough. But she has a broken arm, and can't shift because of it.

She looked up at the leader nervously. In each pack that she had joined she had either been related to or closely knew the leaders...here things were a little different. She was a good deal shorter than Tayui, as well. Ember wasn't sure how to act submissive in this form, but she lowered her ears and posture, tail pausing in its never ending sweep to still, the bushy end resting against the ground.

Her introduction was made and she nodded quickly, agreeing that that was her name and that she was from Dahlia de Mai. She had told Skoll that she was leaving because of the war--it was a major reason that she had left--but there was more to the story than that. She didn't know if it was something that Tayui needed to know, or not, and she certainly would have been more comfortable telling Pilot, but Ember decided to let it out. A pack member's business was the alpha's business; one member's choices could affect the entire pack, really.

"I..." She looked as if she wasn't sure what to say for a moment, or how to phrase it. "am also seeking refuge from one of my packmates..my sister, Firefly. And I would ask that if she comes here to visit someone that I be told...so that I might leave, to avoid her."

But maybe she was getting ahead of herself. She hadn't even been accepted yet, and she was already asking for more than she should have been. More than she deserved. "In Dahlia de Mai was a scout...and fourth-ranked in the pack. Until Firefly...she took my rank."

Ember can reply after this. Void, jump in when Tayui finishes her quick conversation with Ember, or sooner if you feel the need! :3

She was a little torn. She did not want Shadowed Sun to become sort sort of refugee camp for those who opposed the war, but she didn't want to turn Ember out for her own selfish reasons. If this were a permanent decision, Tayui could live with Ember's initial reasons for joining, but would she fit in? Although the pack was geared toward those who wished to learn, she supposed anyone could fit in if they tried. Everyone was friendly enough, after all: Pilot was a quirky chap, and knew a few squirrels here and there, and she didn't think Ember would have any problems with any of the other members.

There wasn't any real reason to turn her away, so she might as well pursue this matter a bit further. "Is this a temporary solution, or are you going to be here to stay? I don't have any control over it, but... I like to know that you'll stick around to make a life for yourself here. Maybe even become a scout here, if it suits you?" She would have to explain the different structure of their co-rank system to Ember as well, for it differed greatly from that of Jaded Shadows, and other packs she had encountered. Although, that depended on Ember's answer. If she would like to stay, not just to hide, but to live.

She wanted to live somewhere different. There were other options, places that she could go and join...but she didn't want the automatic acceptance that she had gotten in her last packs. She wanted to work for what she had, and not feel like she'd only gotten in because her family members ran the place. Phoenix had welcomed her back with open arms, and her cousin Haku had allowed her to join despite what she had said about her abilities. He'd even made her a scout. Now that she had more experience she would consider such an offer...but back then she'd been nothing but homeless, lonely, and afraid. Not good traits for a scout to have. If she went to Phoenix Valley, she would be living with her mother again...which was the last thing she wanted. She wanted independence.

"I wasn't a very good scout in Dahlia." She started. "But...I can only hope that my skills will improve over time. I really do like watching wolves, keeping track of where everyone is and what everyone else is doing. And protecting the borders, too. If you will accept me, I will try my hardest to do Shadowed Sun good. I want to stay here for as long as you'll have me"

Tayui nodded slowly as Ember spoke, wondering for a moment why the female had been a scout if she was not good at it. If she did like looking after others and helping keep everyone safe and in order, perhaps Skoll might take her under his wing and teach her about becoming a Protector. At least the girl had an idea to begin with- helping the pack was certainly a good cause. She was determined, it seemed, for she had a plan in mind.

Tayui remained silent for a few moments, trying to figure out how to go about this. All her questions had been answered, and the girl seemed earnest enough; honest enough. "We could always do with another willing member," she began quietly, almost to herself, letting her words trail off. "Will you regret this? You said you're willing, that you want to help the pack, but do you think you will truly be happy here?" She did not want to only offer sanctuary to the girl if it was not what she truly wanted. It might be a bit selfish, for herself, her pack, and even for Ember, but she wanted to make sure this was what the girl truly wanted. She couldn't explain it. Perhaps she had seen too many run away from their fears to bare to see it again. Perhaps it was because she still had hope that perhaps one day Ember might be able to patch it up. Perhaps the mention of family inspired a bit of hope in her.

"It was the only thing Haku thought I would be good at. I'm not good at a lot of things." She said hurriedly afterwards. "Maybe it would be best for me to get healed up first...and then we could decide together how I might be of service to Shadowed Sun."

She couldn't really do anything with her arm the way it was. Naniko had given her the cast material to give to Pilot; she'd be able to have a real cast once the gouges in her arm were healed. They needed to breathe; the white wolf had said that if she were to put a cast over everything now that the gashes could get infected. Ember didn't really like the idea of only having one arm that she could use, but as long as she knew that it would heal eventually then she could learn to live with it.

"Of course I'll be happy here. I think I've lived too long amongst those of my line...I need to break away from them and be my own person. I've heard that this is the pack dedicated to knowledge and learning. Isn't learning about yourself included in that?" The yearling wasn't sure if what she had said was the right thing or not, but she couldn't lie. She would devote herself to this pack, to learning more about herself and about the world around her...slowly, but surely.

Skoll couldn't withhold an inward smile at her words. It just...seemed very fitting, that Phoenix's daughter would think that way. It was a little alike himself, he knew, but it reminded him of Phoenix, also, who had struggled to take care of everyone at once after Gibraltar had gone. It was...just very apt that Ember felt that way, he supposed. With a modicum of cuteness in the fact that she felt that way when she was still so young. Being positioned a little behind Ember, and with the girl speaking and the woman listening, he knew they would not notice his silent musings.

He stood at attention as the two spoke and their conversation went on, trying to predict where this was going. A drawn out plea for acceptance, it seemed, though Skoll did not understand why Tayui was prolonging the process. She had behaved strangely of late, and he wondered if she had led the pack the same way back when she was the alpha of Jaded Shadows, or if this new side of her was one born of negative experiences in her old life, before the burning.

"Learning about one's self is included in all walks of life," he cut in, not gleaning from Tayui's posture that he was supposed to continue his silence. "Though this may be the only pack anymore where you won't find a sibling, I can't say." It was sad that she was having this dilemma, Phoenix had been the father of many children, biological and no, and it would be difficult for her to escape from that. It was an experience he had little knowledge of, despite his years, having not seen his own siblings in so long.

Tayui nodded in agreement; Ember could take as much time as she needed to heal and begin anew. There was a slight pause as the girl finished speaking; this time, Tayui smiled in return. The girl was right. She had to reassure herself, that the girl meant no harm, leaving a pack at war to find them, that it was truly her decision, not anyone else's. Perhaps she felt indebted to the girl to ask, for Ember Agaric, the one who this child owed her name to, had never joined her in her own pack. She really just wanted to know what the girl was thinking before deciding anything, as Skoll had told her little but her name and previous pack.

Tayui supposed that in many ways, she had come to discover a lot about herself here as well. One had to be in tuned with themselves before deciding what they liked or wished to pursue. Ember's answer satisfied her curiosity, thus ending the short conversation. Tayui glanced over at Skoll as he spoke up, then nodded quickly once he had finished. "I do hope you find what you are looking for here, Ember. For the time being, you will be ranked as Periokoi, essentially a subordinate. Feel free to go through the books in our library and see what piques your interest. If at some point you would like to pursue a co-rank, talk to either Pilot or I, and we can tell you more about it. If you would like, I could show you around, or you can explore the area for yourself." She paused, then smiled. "Welcome to Shadowed Sun, Ember."

"I'll...explore a bit, get settled in. Thank you for accepting me...I'll try my best to prove to you that I belong here, too" Was this it? Ember turned away from the two seniors, beginning a slow lope into the territory. She didn't really mind if any of her family was here....just not Firefly. Kansas she could deal with, but not her sister. For the longest time it had just been Ember, her two brothers, and her father. She was getting used to having Iskata around again, but she didn't think she would ever get used to her mix-coated sister.

She jerked her head quickly in a nod, her mouth twisting into a lopsided smile. "Good. I'll see you around soon, most likely," she replied, her words more of a promise than a statement. She remained there beside Skoll, watching the girl for a moment as she headed off to explore the territory. She glanced over at Skoll, watching him for a few moments, wondering if now might be an appropriate time to ask him about teaching her to fight. She frowned; perhaps not. "I'll be off as well, Skoll. I'll talk to you soon- there are a few things I want to discuss with you." She smiled, trying to make her words seem less ominous. And then she was off, heading in a different direction from Ember, deep into the pack's territory.
