I remember on the days of the forest and the fray - Faizel Kartal - 10 June 2016

See galleries for credit.

A barren landscape of stumps and weedy growth stretched between Faizel and the expanse of glittering blue water of the lake. It was an odd sight -- strange and unnatural, but the logged field was not the same as the trees felled from the earthquakes and the screaming wind. At some point, exploring down the shore, the Sapien found an old building and evidence of old, rusted blades and other things that might have come alive to eat trees in the days before Luperci; she’d stopped to scavenge, but decades had looted all but the most rotten logs and rusted, broken tools from the sawmill.

Finished with her exploration, hot from labor and investigating musty buildings, the wolf-jackal padded to the northern shore of the lake, glancing out. Small docks had fallen away into the water, and cattails and flowering rushes sprang up along the bank. Greenery -- algae and duckweed and other questionably-scented things -- floated on the water’s surface, disturbed from time to time by flickers of fish coming up to investigate bugs on the surface.

It was a peaceful sight, but Faizel felt more restless than at peace. She sighed and settled down on a stone at the water’s edge, letting her legs dangle and her feet touch the cool surface. She shut her eyes as the wind ruffled her white hair, breathing in the scent of the lake -- and, she found, of the packlands beyond. Slowly, she opened her eyes again.

Re: I remember on the days of the forest and the fray - Izrian Firebringer - 13 June 2016

With her duties having changed and increased since taking over leadership of Vinatta, Izrian felt more and more compelled to branch out and investigate the areas around the pack. Since the earthquake and subsequent flooding the landscape had changed, and Izrian hadn’t since been out to this portion of the territories closest to her pack to really see the damage done, and the ways the hills, wooded fields and shoreline had changed. It was for that reason that she was travelling, taking in everything and wondering what effect it would have had on the herds they often hunted from, or the huge fish she recalled catching out of the lake the last few times she’d been here before the storm.

The herds she wouldn’t be able to tell too much on until later in the year, as they typically went further north and deeper into the woods to breed and rear young around this time of the year. Smaller animals seemed undeterred as the Firebringer located many paths of tracks and burrows here and there, but from her high viewpoint of the world the Luperci couldn’t possibly know of the chaos the colonies of rodents had gone through – it may have even been worse than their own chaos, with everything so much larger and more dangerous for them. With the smaller animals noted as remaining in the area, the Vinattan decided to look out on one of her favorite lakes.

Before she arrived on the shoreline the wind pushed a scent toward her that she remembered from the Leadership Summit in Casa. Her sapphire eyes glanced around this way and that before landing on a figure with stark white hair against the green grass and the blue of the lake. While she’d never been to Sapient, she did pick up that same pack smell which Aspen had told her belonged to Sapient, which Ascher had moved to recently. The Firebringer let out a short bark to alert the stranger to her approach and then waltzed over casually in her Optime form, feet falling silently on the soft grass beneath them. “Hi there,” she said, swishing her tail to and fro in a friendly manner as she stood near the female and glanced out over the lake.

“I’m Izrian Firebringer,” she said, looking to her curiously. “You’re from Sapient?”

OOC: Apologies for the wait!!

It was odd to smell the pack from across the water, but the odor of wolves was unmistakable among the scents of the landscape. The pine forests must have harbored a number of them, and Faizel vaguely remembered passing by such a place when she fetched her brother from that city brothel. It reminded her that she hadn’t seen most of the land her father told her stories about, and she wondered, not for the first time, whether she’d done right by her family choosing Sapient as the first pack to settle in.

She twitched her ears up at the sound of a bark, though she’d been able to smell the individual scent coming a little sooner than that. She moved her pale blue eyes from the treetops on the other side of the lake and glanced at the approaching female—a tawny wolf about her brother’s age, smelling strongly of other wolves and wood.

Ahlan, Faizel responded in Arabic, dipping her head briefly in greeting. Her face was more or less impassive as usual, though she’d shifted her body so that it faced the female. Though she was not the warmest stranger to greet, Faizel tried to be courteous for the sake of appearance. “I am. My name is Faizel Kartal. What pack are you from—this one?” she asked, gesturing to the lake.
