A future that passes without recollection - Silvano Sadira - 25 March 2018

[html]
We’re the only ones who know

It was cold outside. He stared stupidly into the sky, wondering why it was so cold so early in the season. Wasn't it fall, still? Wasn't it supposed to be gold and brown, chilly but pleasantly fall-like. The trees were barren, the ground bare, and there was still pockets of very cold snow and ice littering the darkest shadows. It was supposed to be fall, and yet it was clearly winter. He had been thinking before he left the Hotel that it was definitely supposed to be fall. It was just the summer, recently, right?

The man reached for his bare neck, wondering where he had put his mother's old gift of a scarf. It had been in the old colors of Crimson Dreams, a memory of his childhood full of love. But he had not been able to find it when he looked in the rooms he had shared with Shiloh, who also seemed to be difficult to track down those days. Had she gone off to visit family somewhere? She had not been around in a while, from what he could remember.

Silvano moved down the old, dilapidated street; the road was worn and the concrete cracked. At least that still looked right. It still seemed wrong, at the same time.

It did not do for a King to be so confused in his own Kingdom. Where was everyone, too? It was.. odd, eerie, but the man felt rather lost as he shambled on like a living ghost on a broken road that headed toward the training grounds.

dad walkin' he super confusion ok

Re: A future that passes without recollection - Gaia Dawnrunner - 31 March 2018

The young woman went about her days as she had before the conflict which so destroyed her concept of normality. It was hard to do this – sometimes she became overwhelmed with grief and broke down, and sometimes she found herself listless, but on days when the sun came out she tried very hard to be anywhere but home.

It was not entirely sunny today, but clear enough for her to enjoy the weather. Winter could not stay forever, and she could see traces of this fading if she looked hard enough. Soon, seemed to be the thought, though no one knew exactly when. This wasn't terrible. She could wait.

Returning from an early morning hunt which had provided laughably small results, Gaia traveled on her four legs with ease. She was stocky and dark, as wolves went, and made for the forest from which she emerged.

Ahead of her on the road stood her father, whom she observed just long enough to feel as if something was off with his movements. Though conflicted about how she now regarded him, Silvano was still her father. He had suffered greatly for his sins, and cruelty was not her nature.

Gaia hailed him with a little noise and began to approach.

A sound of greeting or something echoed behind him. He spun about slowly to discern the sight and squinted ever so slightly at the figure approaching from the close distance. It took a good moment before it was a less blurry sight and he could identify the features, and yet recognition did not dawn on his face as the young woman approached him on that old and worn out road.

He thought he ought to know who she was, for she seemed so outrageously familiar, but his brain failed to figure out just how exactly he knew the young woman. Perhaps, he had greeted her recently at the borders? Or perhaps someone else had? But who would have done such a thing and not tell him? Surely not Skoll, who would at least tell him when someone knew was admitted by his own permissions.

So, the man smiled broadly at the girl he failed to recognize as one of his youngest daughters. It would not do to be impolite. A man who was King always had to worry tirelessly over his image, after all.

”Hello, young lady. Are you new?” he asked brightly, entirely unaware what sort of alarm or worry it would elicit, for it had not been thought of as an insane question for a man to ask his own child. He continued to grin brightly at her, as though nothing at all was the matter.

He turned to face her, and smiled – it was the first time she could remember seeing him smile like that in a very long time, but something about it felt strange.

When he spoke, Gaia stilled in a new and suspicious way that had not been present in her steps before this winter. Even the way she stood reflected this, as if her body might soon be propelled into motion. She thought her father a changed man from the one her memory sought to recall, but these were tainted thoughts too and strife with the hurt of infidelity and such broken oaths of love.

Her face remained carefully neutral. If she misunderstood what was happening, it would be easy to play it off. She had always been good at presenting herself, even if she would much rather be neck deep in dirt pile somewhere.

Are you trying to be funny? Gaia asked, more pointedly than she might if the pity and love in her heart had not been compromised by anger.

His face fell, the smile slipping off roughly from his features. His brows furrowed at the young woman, still failing to recognize her in any sense of the word. Her tone was harsher than he expected, especially since he thought that she was just a newcomer, eager to please a higher ranking man of the pack.

But something was wrong, as it had been for a while.

"I.. no?" he answered hesitantly, any level of elloquance leaving him with the confusion that came from misunderstanding. Was he not supposed to help a newcomer? Was a King not supposed to be a bastion for his people? Or maybe perhaps she did not recognize him. That must have been it. She was new, after all, or a guest, and could not have known that she stood before the King of the Court.

"I am the King of the Court, and help those that are new to the pack," he explained slowly, as though the young woman was rather slow herself, or simply from a different culture. He gave a nod of understanding, as though it made all the sense in the world. Gaia's identity was still a fog in his mind, despite the niggling suspicion that he knew the girl lingering in the back of his mind.

Who was he nodding at? Was someone watching them, like this was some kind of joke? Or was it a test, some awful idea like the one where Kalypso lied about who she was and he went along with it?

The line of Gaia's mouth turned hard, hating that she was thinking this way. She hated worse that a part of her believed it could be true. There had been treachery within the highest ranks, and conspiracy in those beneath it. Even she had promised to fight, but now the idea seemed like it had been one made under false pretenses. They had fought for the Court, not so that Kalypso could be made Queen.

She didn't think her father so cruel, though his betrayal had been among the worst of all.

You were the King, she heard herself say. How long had it been since she accepted their new ruler? It was fine, she supposed. Her elder siblings had not made war over the matter, even if Serena had begun acting as if they were all mad for doing so.

Gaia wasn't certain what she could believe in these days.

Kalypso is the Queen now, she went on, louder. Are you playing a game? Are the puppies here?

Outright surprise was all over his face as the girl's tone rose and her voice was hinted with the same coldness that did not seem to disappear with the sunlight around him. He blinked at her, his mouth widening as he took a hesitant step backward, even though his brain - befuddled as it was - demanded that he step forward to shake the truth from the girl's mouth. What madness did she spout in his pack, to speak such lies to the King?

"I think you're mistaken. I am definitely still the King," he countered, his tone sharper than before. There was no more understanding left in his voice and he felt his patience ebb to nothing. He did not think her right or that her version of reality was accurate. "I don't even know any Kalypso," he spat back at her, feeling his hackles rising up as the anger surged forward. He would have known if someone sat on his throne. Abigail would not have allowed such a thing, he knew.

He lurched forward, teeth baring as he raised his arm, eager to point an accusatory finger in her direction when he realized that there was no finger to point. There were no fingers on that hand, for there was nothing past the stump of a wrist that was left over from something. The former King froze as his eyes locked to the absent hand, having been so sure he had felt the lost appendage moments prior. He did not remember losing it either, and his befuddlement was so easy to see, especially as he stood there having lost any attention he could have given to Gaia.

"I.. are you real?" he asked hesitantly, looking up at his daughter, age all over his face like cracks in the sidewalk.
