Feel-Good things?
#1
Sometimes I feel crappy and so I want to watch or read something that's nice and cute. I didn't know if anyone had some pick-me-up books, movies, or shows that others might not have heard of that'd be available for anyone who's just having a crappy day and wants to relax and watch nice stuff? Idk. @_@

For instance -- one of my go-to shows is Scrubs. It's often lighthearted enough to leave me feeling good. :B Some books that leave me laughing and in a great mood are Good Omens and several Discworld novels.

So yeah. Anyone have any recommendations for good books or movies or shows or things? Not necessarily looking for heavy topics and "this show is good" without it being more of a lighthearted/pick-me-up show. For instance -- GoT/ASoIaF is something I enjoy, but if I am feeling blue I probably don't want that heartbreak. 8D Some examples I might be looking for are cute, fluffy romance or friendship things (just... no queerbaiting please) or fun, awesome comedies that don't put anyone down to get laughs.

Any recommendations?

I love Monty Python and the Holy Grail personally, but I know he isn't for everyone. The movie makes me laugh each and every time I watch it.

The movie Hot Rod. If you haven't seen this, it's perfect. Pretty sure it's on netflix. Also just the good old comedies you've probably seen like Nacho Libre and Napoleon Dynamite. I WAS IN LAUGHING TEARS<33 Also the Emperor's New Groove. Yes.

As for books, I don't really read many contemporary/cutesy things. But there's a couple I'm going to pick up that I've heard good things about. Anna and the French Kiss, Lola and the Boy Next Door, Isla and the Happily Ever After by Stephanie Perkins. Seriously, any kind of book really just picks me up- I'm just that kind of person. Unless it's a tragedy, obviously.

Don't watch many happy/funny tv shows either. So I'm not that much help at all, really, but just thought I'd throw out the few things I had<33~

I listen to the holy grail I don't watch it often but I play the sound in the background make me giggle.

Me personally read Manga, my go to is normally a Yaoi. For me I think the story of a well written one is way more touching then a normal Manga's. Though I'm not talking super X rated ones I'm talking ones with an actual story.

I also enjoy just listening to music makes me happy. Mostly 90's cause they be my jam,

My go to relaxing shows are anything on HGTV and Face Off on Syfy channel (limited episodes are free on hulu, but you can find all the seasons on project free tv). The shows really satisfy my "NEED TO BE PERFECT/PRODUCTIVE" impulses LOL so if anyone else suffers anxiety from that, this can hit the spot. They calm me down a loooot 8I Especially the show on HGTV where I think it's called like This Old House and it's some dudes and they're just like "Here is how you build a window" and even though I'll never build a window, I feel very contented lol xD

For reading, I like reading short fiction from the New Yorker, but that's a mixed bag and they aren't always happy. But the act of curling up with a magazine can be relaxing. Put on rain sounds and it's like reading on a rainy day!

Videos, for a REALLY GOOD LAUGH watch Wizard People by Brad Neely. It's all up on youtube. It is SO FUNNY oh my god. Anything by Brad Neely, actually, that just HITS THE SPOT. If I had a bad day, I put on Coffee Line from the Baby Cakes diaries and I'm golden. He is hilarious.

Also, there's a ton of hilarious webcomics out there! Hark a Vagrant, Cucumber Quest, Octopus Pie, Bobwhite, Three Word Phrase....

Scrubs is love, Scrubs is life <3

I love unwinding with silly comedies on Netflix like Scrubs -- in the same vein is Psych (which also features dorky interracial BFF bros very much like Turk and JD). Futurama (Seasons 1-5) and Bob's Burgers are great cartoons with fluff and friendship. Netflix also has Ouran High School Host Club dub which is classic~ :)))

Newer shows like Community, Parks and Rec, and Brooklyn Nine-Nine are on Hulu and they're all pretty lighthearted and goofy with some loveable characters. :3 (Community does brush on some dark topics so if you're in a bad place I might not go with that one, but overall I think it has an uplifting message and I'm a sucker for "group of friends help each other out of problems" type shows with little romance)

My ultimate feel-good comes from sports anime though. x);; Haikyuu and Yowapeda are watchable on Crunchyroll and I highly recommend. They are addictive though, once you fall in love with the characters! There's nothing like winning a game of sportsball or riding a bike really fast to make you feel like you can do anything~

My all time favorite movei Howl's Moving Castle. <3 I used to fall asleep to it every night. I'd try and fall asleep, end up watching the whole thing and then play it again and actually fall asleep. That movie is amazing.

Netflix. Yes! Netflix.

Roleplaying! I love getting all my frustrations out through my characters, getting excited from new plots and romances, making new characters, chatting with the people on here. It's just away to escape the world and yes, it makes me feel good which is why I can never give it up.

Micheladas! For those of you who don't know what that is, it's beer with clamato juice, hot sauce, salt, lime, and chili powder. It's the mother of all drinks.

The jacuzzi. A reliable way to relieve stress!

The boyfriend. Cuddling with the boyfriend has got to be one of the most feel good things out there! What's better than releasing oxytocin and relieving stress?

Singing! I sing in the shower, in the car, at work. Singing is the ultimate way to be happy!

Aw, Scrubs <3 Scrubs is a great show to help pull you out of a mood but lately my favorite pick-me-up show has been Modern Family. That family's antics (Phil's in particular) cracks me up no matter how down I'm feeling.

Hyperbole and a Half makes me all kinds of happy and often makes me cry tears of laughter <3 I wish Allie Brosh was my friend :< She hasn't been too active for the past couple of years because of her own depression but if you somehow haven't yet been introduced to this crazy blog she has quite a few entries in the archives to get you caught up c:

Um, games. Sometimes I'll get involved with games to help distract me from stuff. Okami and Harvest Moon are my go-tos when I'm feeling down. There's something about Okami's goal to bring life to diseased places/things that makes me feel really happy :3

My Neighbor Totoro.

Watching that movie is like getting a warm hug, you can never go wrong with it. Or really most of the Miyazaki/Ghibli movies. I have two exceptions, but unless you are a die hard fan of Miyazaki, I don't think I need to mention them. Anyways, yeah, My Neighbor Totoro. It is the ultimate feel good movie.

I wanna thank you for all these comments/recommendations/whatever. <333 I'll have to check out things I'm not familiar with and try to have more of a happy. >:D

@Sylvey: Love Monty Python :D I need to buy that movie though (or find it online...) so I can watch it when I feel like it!
@Ann: Oh man I have... actually not seen those :| except Emperor's New Groove. LLAMAMAMA. I'll have to go back and watch those since I missed out on them, though I remember when Napoleon Dynamite was quoted constantly around my school. That was waaaay back.
@Marie: 90s brings me baaaack(streetboys??) and I need to get into manga. I mean -- I've got ones I remember liking but they are not always super happy/fluffy. xD If you have specific recommendations for fluffy romance manga that's well written, I'd love to hear.
@Nico: Thanks, will check it out!
@San: Yesss I watch Face Off with my mom. xD Gotta check out those other things! Thanks!
@Miyu: I need to see alllll those things. *makes notes* I am kind of watching Parks and Rec mostly because Chris Pratt but yes xD I do need to sit down and check out the other stuff. My little cousin LOVES Psych and I have enjoyed the episodes I've caught on TV.
@Sami: *hugs her Howl's Moving Castle DVD* ;_;
@Mandi: Okami is only my favorite video game ever
@Ariel: I haven't seen My Neighbor Totoro. Need to! I own/have seen Howl's Moving Castle, Spirited Away, and Princess Mononoke. I do have an idea of what to avoid if I don't wanna cry my eyes out even if I've only seen those three. xDD

my newest go-to is the man in the box, or Harry Potter on Audio 8D. I'm ripping them from another RA in my building and it's so nice to hear such a soothing british voice reading HP to me augh. AUGH.

I also find that I just read books in general when i'm down, or sick.

Also, Raze, if you want straight romance, pg-13ish, I'd recommend Hana-Kimi, which is probably one of the best written secret girl in boy school manga EVER. EVER. It topples Ouran Highschool Host Club quite a bit for me, which is still pretty good, but Hana-Kimi probably has the best sense of plot pacing I've really read. Both are under 25 volumes but I own them both because ugh I love them. I'm not sure what the status is of High School Debut but it's also a pretty cute one, so far as I've read.
