[J] A change in tune

Kane had spent the last few days moving northward from Seabreeze Brink. Occasionally, the Volva would stop and check out the other environments, but none fancied her interest. Once she got away from the tidal flats, Kane found herself in a rather enjoyable place. The land was vast, the grass was green, and there was a variety of textures playing amongst the fields. From rocks, to trees, to rivers, Kane felt as if though this would be a much better place to be. Kane enjoyed the sea ridden cliffs, but she wanted a change for not only herself, but her curiosity. Kane grew up amongst the ragged ocean ridden cliffs and flat fields of her old home, so now she wanted something away from the sea a bit.

The sun was shining through the clouds a little as the weather cleared up from the rain overnight. Snow still fell in some places, depending on where you were, so Kane appreciated not having to deal with that down below the elevation. Kane was moving through Fundy National Park when she smelled the border. The smell of mist, soil, and pine radiated into her nose, among the smell of wolf, and she took this as the scent of their territory border. Kane was not on the other side of the clearing just yet, but there was still some distance to go before the forest opened up to fields and meadows. Not wanting to trespass, Kane did the only respectable thing which was howling for someone to meet her here.

Welcome to the Vale!

Zuri liked the feel of the grass under her feet again, unlike the chill that ran up her when the snow was covering the ground. The growing heat of the sun made things more annoying in the long run, but better than having to bundle up due to the heat of the snow. She could wear her dresses with the pride she held inside of her, rather than having to cover them up. It was always something that made her stand out against everyone else in the Vale. It was something she liked about her look, that and the way she had come to decorate her hair.

The pale woman had found herself along the borders, her eyes scanning out along the lands outside the borders. The lines of trees helped to block out the sun, which was good since she didn't have to constantly hold her arm above her head. It was a shame that the moon wasn't out in view yet. It was getting around the time when her bats would come out of hibernation, which meant she would be able to enjoy their company again.

It was certainly much better than anything she got from Callisto. One hand traced over the necklace she wore, letting them move along the wings. Soon.

Upright ear turned to the sound of the call. There was someone along the borders, and given the volume, they were not too far from her current position. Eyes narrowed slightly as Zuri began to pick up the pace. There was no one else around, and while it would have been wiser to have some kind of weapon on her, she was still waiting to find someone that might be able to help her when it came to her own weapon of choice. She really should have stolen a temporary one when she left Mortimer all that time ago.

When the Risegard came to the source of the sound, she found another female there, earthy colors over her pelt. She had done well to stop where she was, outside the borders. Holding herself tall, crimson eyes fell on the woman before her, "These are the borders of Mistfell Vale. What brings you here?" Her tail curled up slightly, showing her position of authority within this kingdom.

Low muse today, I'm sorry Regcry

Lots of outside things messing with my muse.

Kane adjusted her bow on her back and examined it while she waited. Kane enjoyed archery so much that she had gone through at least two other bows previous to the one she had now. The first two were crafted quite poorly, she had to admit. This third one was crafted to be more durable and resist wear from heavy use, but Kane imagined it would also break after some time. The sinew strings held up very well, however. Her arrows with sharpened stone heads also tended to break off after a while, but through some experience in creating the arrows, Kane had found a way to keep them attached and made the arrows out of a different material so that they flew faster through the air.

The time gave Kane to reflect on her own experience through the land. She had seen some of the country, but not all of it. What remained to be seen was the pack lands and the territories that wolves lived on. Mistfell Vale was the one place that caught her attention the most. It seemed to be more focused on the land than the other places, and she got a good feeling about it. Perhaps she would fit in well here. Kane only hoped because she didn't want to be a loner for long, nor did she want to change herself to benefit the pack.

Kane didn't have to wait long for someone to reply to her call. She imagined a large pack like this would have some members pretty much all over the territory. As the woman walked up and greeted her, Kane noticed her stance change. In response, Kane dipped lower, displaying a form of submission. Kane didn't wish to offend, especially with being in unfamiliar places. Kane smiled and bowed to the woman before speaking. "I came seeking a home. I have been in the lands for some time, and I feel it about right to be part of a pack."

It had been at least a couple of weeks since Kane arrived to the country as a loner. While Kane had gotten familiar with some of the lands around her, she wished to finally settle somewhere. It was nice being alone for a while and musing to yourself in thought and song, but Kane was a social character. Though quiet, she enjoyed being around others and missed the company. "My name is Kane Ardelean." Kane spoke with a heavy Icelandic accent, giving way to what her home location was.

Zuri kept an open mind for those that came to join the Vale, just as the Ravenking had done so when she first fled to this kingdom. If he was willing to take in someone on the run like her, then it should be welcoming to those of many different backgrounds. It would be clear if those they were to take in would start becoming a threat, but none have been at that end of the spectrum. There wasn't much reason to believe this woman would be the first one to start that.

She noted the bow that was resting along the woman's body. It gave an idea of what kind of person this one was, but there would still be a need for her to elaborate on a few matters. That would come in time.

Kane was her name. She had lowered her posture more under the pale woman's presence, as many did when they were coming to join a land that was not their own. It would be, but another thing in time. She had come here seeking a new home, and interesting that she would fall to the Vale for that. Did she know of the other packs that were in the general area? Crimson gaze glanced off into the distance before falling down on her again, "I am Mistfell Vale's Risegard, councilwoman to our leader, the Ursarchon. My name is Zuri."

Pausing for a moment to get another look, and take in the noticible tone of her accent, she gave a small sway of her tail, keeping it somewhat pointed up as it began to relax. Her gaze never tore away from the earthy woman, "I must ask how it is that you came upon the Vale, or rather why you choose to come join us. Further more, I am sure you will understand my asking what you can offer to us if you join."

There was space for many, but everyone had to hold their own to better the kingdom on the whole.

Kane took in her name, Zuri, and found that it was peculiar to say on her tongue. Specifically, the "Z" part of her name. Kane never really spoke any names with the letter "Z" in it, so it was fascinating to feel the sensation. Kane had traveled in between the pack lands and mostly, she chose this one off of a feeling she had. And the smells reminded her of home more. Not a very good explanation, but perhaps an understandable one. Kane nodded lightly in thought. "I smelled the other packs as I made my way inland," she started to say. "But the smells that come from these borders are much like that of my homeland. It gives me a sort of... Óðinn bölvaði því." Kane stopped to think of the word she wanted to use. "Familiar?" Kane finally said. It was close enough to describe her feeling on the smell and location Zuri lived in.

"My skills are many, but focused on hunting and providing." Kane said, pointing to her bow. "I can hunt, skin, tan, and forage for healing plants to make my own medicine." Kane removed a small satchel of various grounded and shredded herbs ready to use for different injuries and illnesses. "Besides that, my family lived with the earth and cared for it. We farmed and grew our own food besides hunting, and lived rather rough lifestyles. I can handle anything." Kane enjoyed living life that way as it taught her that she was still alive and mortal. Rather than living a comfortable lifestyle, Kane wanted to work hard for the things she earned than to have them be handed to her. Kane hated laziness with a passion, and she would go crazy if she wasn't off doing something to stay busy.

Welcome! I'll get word to Vida to get MV's post up and get you set up for the Vale.

Zuri took in everything that her eyes could catch, something she had been taught to take in by her family from a young age. There was an advantage to looking over everything, even from the way one's face or posture changed. It was a good way to see who was good enough to be trusted or someone that would be looking to lie to her. It also gave her a way to use this information to make sure she was presenting herself in way that would be able to trick those she came across should she need to do such a thing.

Crimson gaze fell back down to the other woman, seeking to answer the questions that were presented to her. Rather than starting with her skills, she explained that she had come to this area, and even seemed aware of the other kingdoms that were in the area. When it came to the Vale in particular, she had said it just felt familiar. The words she had tried using to describe it were unusual, if only in the sense of them being something that the pale woman had never heard before. She crossed her arms in thought, "If you don't mind humoring me a bit, how does this place smell familiar to that of your home?"

It was not necessary, but something that fueled the Ridegard's curiosity.

Moving on to the more predictable answers, she laid out her own set of skills. A hunter, and one that seemed to know how to deal with many aspects of the bodies she brought down. Along with those skills, she knew some of herbs, enough to make some medicine. That would be a welcome addition to their set of skills, especially if they were going to see to some more attacks being made against them. Giving a pause, Zuri nodded her had to the woman, "All things we can use on the whole. Very well."

Turning, the Risegard motioned to have Kane follow her, "Come. I'll take you to where many of us have taken up residence. I'll inform our leader about you joining. Welcome to Mistfell Vale."

How did this place smell familiar? Kane thought about it for a moment, but then replied. "The smell of the sea and the land. It's similar to my old home. We lived on high cliffs and flat rolling hills." Kane followed Zuri as she instructed Kane to follow. Picking up her satchel bag, Kane stood up and walked beyond the forest border to follow Zuri. "Thank you." she responded. Kane looked around her at the varying landscape and smiled. It would be nice to settle in to a place where she could call home, and begin to feel somewhat normal again.

"So what is Mistfell Vale like? Are you farmers, warriors, or somewhat in between?" Kane asked as she caught up to Zuri. "My family were Vikings, so we were in tune with the land while we worshipped Odin, and the other gods." she said. She remembered some of the rituals performed within her family to bless the harvest and increase success with the hunts. Perhaps this pack did some similar things, though she wouldn't be offended if they didn't. Even if she was by herself without other Vikings nearby, she was grateful for other faces and voices to interact with.

Zuri considered what the other woman had said. High cliffs and the sea was not something one would use to describe this home, at least, save for the small piece at the southern tip of their borders. The Vale had rivers more than anything else. As for the hills, well at least they had those. Still, it was enough to satisfy Zuri's curiosity, so she should at least give thanks for the passing of that information, "I see. Well, if that is the case, I'm sure you'll be pleased with the southern parts of our territory."

The woman had grabbed what belongings she had, soon joining the pale woman on the other side of the borders. Giving a nod, her gaze turned back to the path ahead of them, "You're welcome."

It would be a bit of time for them to get to the heart of the Vale, so Kane had been the one to start up conversation, asking what he new home was like. Seemed like something she should have asked before joining, or at least gotten to know a bit more than just "it smelled like home." Still, she would learn now, "I've never heard of those people." It was hard to learn about many others when you were trapped in a kingdom that barely tolerated anyone outside of their norm.

Returning back to the proper question, one hand moved up to gesture out to the land in front of them, "There are many of us from all different walks of life. Our skills and personalities work with one another to better the whole. If you want to get into the finer details, our kingdom has a certain 'house system,' where those of us that have reached a certain level are placed into a house. As Risegard, I am the current head of the Hawkesond house."

(Recovering from a long work week and two days of migraines. Sorry about that.)

Kane followed Zuri as she described the housing system of ranks, and how she was the head of one of them. Hawkesond. That was an interesting name and with her accent, proved to be only slighty difficult. When Zuri mentioned she had never heard of Vikings, she was not all that surprised. "Vikings never ventured this far, so that's why you've never heard about them." The reason why Kane had never asked about what the pack was like was because the homeland was similar to hers, and she would adapt to whatever she faced. It was a common problem for her to leap in first and learn later. Something she picked up from her father quite well. "Vikings are steadfast warriors and navigators that learn the land and share stories, perform rituals, and live off the land as farmers, hunters, and gatherers. Perhaps even not so different as your pack. Though we speak different languages and have different views on things, I would imagine."

"The houses are.. mm.. ranking system, yes? Not just buildings you have everyone live in." she asked, remembering the communal houses her family had at one point, but they had one that they all shared. This seemed like it was more specific to the way things worked in the pack which intrigued her more. How her family's ranking system worked was similar to an honor system. The more respect and trust you earned in the pack, the higher the trust from the leaders. It even put some in higher ranks than others or placed certain wolves in ranks that had tasks assigned or people to be in charge with. Otherwise, her home was rather free form in the way things worked. It was almost like an exceptionally large band than a pack, but obviously it was not the case. They had their own territory, their own rules, and the small hierarchy system that kept everything in check. ”With these.. houses.. you have to earn you way? How so?”

It's alright, no need to worry.

If anything, Zuri was only slightly curious of the people that this other female came from. There were many here that were just like her, coming from many different backgrounds, but all of them seemed to be able to fit into one place. Still, she listened to Kane's words, thinking on these people. There didn't seem to be anything that really made them stand out, at least not from the description that was being offered. If anything, the idea of farmers was all that stood out, if only because such seemed uncommon around the kingdoms she was aware of.

The pale woman did give a small roll of her eyes, "Any sort of culture like that is going to view their way of life as different from everyone else. It's just natural."

Their conversation steered back towards the houses of the Vale. It seemed she was able to piece together that it was more a sort of ranking system rather than a literal home. The pale woman gave a nod, moving one hand out as she began to explain the finer details, "Yes, that is correct. There are three houses, each of them holding certain values that fit the members that are placed into them. Hawkesond are passionate, social, intense to name a few. The other two houses are Elkenfrey, the creative and mindful ones, and Wolverthrone, organized and principled. There's much more to them than that, but I'm sure you'll learn that from the others her in the Vale."

As they continued to walk, Zuri thought on the words, but soon went on to explain more, "In a way. Once you've reached a certain standing, we'll hold a ceremony where the Ursarchon or myself will sort you into one of the houses. From there, it is just as simple as moving up the ranks and anyone normally would."

Crimson gaze moved back forward as the women came upon Winterwynd. The Risegard gave another small wag of her tail, "Here we are."

As Zuri spoke about the houses and the names of each one, Kane nodded as she made mental notes. "So based off of characteristics of others, then." Kane said. It would make sense that others were segregated by trait, but they were not truly separate from others. It was just classifications they were placed under - nothing more. Kane didn't mind the idea, and was curious how it would work. Especially with the ceremony and all. Kane wondered what kind it would be, and when it would actually happen.

As the pair continued to walk, a view of a city arrived ahead. Mostly run down, but useable, Kane eyed it as they got closer. Various buildings of sizes were dotted along the landscape and some looked quite habitable still, even with holes in the walls and roof damage. Kane smiled and gave a nod. "I like it. Much better than the huts we lived in. These buildings are smooth and well built. Save for any structural damage." Kane shifted the bag on her shoulder. "Does the pack live in a certain district of this place? Or is it just wherever you want?" Kane could see a few options that would work well for her, but she didn't want to move into a place that wasn't suited or intended for her to live in.
