[P] Starve The Ego, Feed The Soul

OOC:// Location: Miramichi Wilderness. My huge apologies for taking so long to make this! ;_;

The crisp night air felt almost harsh in Adari's lungs. Even crouched by a small fire, wrapped up in her thick cloak and leaning back against a tree with a fabric covered foam pad that acted as padding between Vespasian's back and his saddle between her and the bark, the wolfess found she was actually a little cold this night. It must have been below freezing for that was the only time she really felt the bite of a winter's night through all her protective layers. A slight shiver passed through her as she readjusted her position even closer to the contained, crackling flames. It was only by clamping her jaws tightly together that she managed to keep her teeth from chattering. She hated showing any kind of weakness, especially to the elements, but she knew very well what kind of power nature held in her arsenal. Rubbing her broad paws together and breathing into the them, the lone woman did her best to keep her fingers from going numb.

Somewhere in the shadows close by her mount stood huddled close to a tree, a thick blanket draped over his back for warmth. On a branch just above where the Gypsy stallion stood Adari's falcon Qeyta rested with her head under her wing, feathers slightly puffed out to keep her warmer as she slept. The wolfess' bi-colored eyes trained themselves up on the face of the full moon which cast its white light down upon the already white landscape. The bright contrast of shadow and snow was enough to temporarily blind someone and with the added flicker from the fire, it was almost dizzying to look out into the night. So, the orange-hued femme kept her gaze mainly focused only a few feet in front of her. Ever alert for sounds or scents of anything lurking around her camp, Adari's ears occasionally swiveled around and her even as she closed her eyes to try and catch a quick nap.

Much to her annoyance, her quick nap had turned into actual sleep. For when she awoke to the sound of her fire fizzling out and to a stiff body and numb paws, the woman now had to force her sluggish blood to get flowing again. Being out in the open as she was it was very difficult to stay warm. Sure, there were trees but she hadn't found a suitable hollow between roots or an empty burrow to temporarily seek shelter in like she had on her first night. "Damnit." Adari softly muttered to herself, forcing her body to respond as she rose to her feet, pulling her cloak farther around her. She needed to go out and grab more firewood to get her fire started up again. With a scowl on her face and trying to keep herself from shivering in the frigid night air, the woman disappeared into the shadow of the trees to gather up some wood. Thankfully by the light of the moon she could see every step she took, but there was still the issue of being blinded by the light upon the snow. She kept her head down, watching where her feet went instead of keeping her eyes up and alert on her surroundings as she normally would. She didn't travel far from her camp when she found a good dead tree to break branches off of. Setting to her task albeit stiffly, Adari broke off branches with sharp cracks and snapping. She winced with every sound the brittle wood made. She was sure that she'd successfully alerted anything and everything of her presence for at least a mile radius. Growling to herself, her mood worsening as the night went on, the woman filled her arms with as much wood as she could before starting back to her fire being careful to be as quiet as she could, not wanting to attract unwanted company.

Something had woken her. She could not say exactly why she was suddenly wide awake but there was no way she was getting back to sleep now. She stayed in the den for a few more moments, trying to get back in to a comfortable position. No matter how hard she tried though she was simply no longer tired. Carefully, as not to disturb the slumbering wolf beside her, Sequoia got up and exited the small cave that served as a sleeping den for her and her mother. Maybe a walk would put her back in a sleeping mood.

As she broke the entrance to the cave and took in big breath of air she was immediately greeted with an alarming scent. It was hard to remember exactly what the scent was at first; she had only smelled it a few times in her whole life yet all her instincts screamed danger. The smell brought the celebration with New Dawn to her mind and it hit her; it was smoke, something was on fire. Her ears pinned back against her head and she hesitated for a moment, not sure if she should wake the rest of the pack. After the longest seconds of her life, she decided to investigate before alerting everyone else. It would be better to get an idea of the scope of the fire before any further action was taken.

She took off at a quick jog toward the scent, her mind racing as the worst case scenarios kept surfacing. If the forest was on fire, it could mean the destruction of their home. They would have to relocate and they would lose this land that Sequoia had grown so attached to. Any of her family could be hurt, particularly the younger and older ones. She couldn’t let that happen. As her anxiety continued to build her pace got faster until she broke the pack’s border at a full sprint.

The scent was close here and she slowed so that she could pinpoint it better. Yet as she tried to find the source of the smell the scent started to die out. The fire had probably burned itself out in the snow. Sequoia stopped to catch her breath, relieved that the fire wasn’t a threat after all. As she stood there regaining herself, she heard the distinct snapping of a branch not far away. Her head turned toward the sound and she breathed in the smells. She picked out one of a wolf and another of a horse, somehow missed underneath the smell of the smoke.

“Who’s there?” She called out. She tried to sound confident but some of her wariness slipped out with her deep, rumbling voice. The stranger was coming closer to Sequoia, who was unaware that she stood between the wolf and her camp. The earth-toned female stayed where she was, waiting nervously for a reply.

OOC: Sorry for the wait. D:

IC: Adari grumbled softly to herself as she trudged through the snow back to her camp. She knew of the proximity she held with an established pack. It made her uncomfortable at best. It was why she had been determined to stay mostly awake during the night. Until she had more space between herself and the borders she wouldn't settle. Guided by the moon's light, the large orange female carried her gathered wood in a bundle in her arms, bi-colored eyes simply narrowed and focused on the paw prints she'd made on her way to the dead tree she'd harvested the wood from. As she crossed into a bright patch of light, out from the shadows of the trees, the Blaise woman stopped dead in her tracks as the scent of an unfamiliar wolf caught in her nose. Thin smoke furled from the fire she'd had going not but 15 minutes before, she could see her camp straight ahead as well as her two animal companions. Instantly on alert, Adari growled softly, dropping her firewood and throwing back her cloak's thick hood, ears swiveling in all directions.

A single paw went to the knife on her belt and her tail slowly flicked side to side. The stranger was close and smelled of the nearby pack. 'Great, just what I needed.' She thought, her lips curling a little in distaste. She really didn't need an uppity pack member lurking about and accusing her of somehow trespassing when she was clearly not close enough to be doing so. Adari wasn't stupid, she didn't often go looking for trouble when it came to an entire, firmly established pack. She only took chances like that with loners, single beings with no loyalties to anyone else but themselves. Tensed and waiting Adari's eyes snapped into the darkness to her right as a voice called out in the night. "Who's there?" Huffing Adari rolled her eyes. Yeah, like she was going to call out her name and invite the strange femme to camp out with her. Like hell she would. So instead the fiery pelted wolfess responded evasively. "Maybe if you give me your name, I'll give you mine..." She smirked softly to herself but remained still and awaited a response. Yes, she was purposely being a little difficult, but she didn't have anything to really be worried about. She hadn't done anything wrong...yet.

Sorry this is so short and so late. I'll get better, I promise ;-;

A voice came from the darkness, a little off from where she had thought the stranger to be by scent alone. The smoke was confusing her nose and she didn’t like the feeling of being so vulnerable. It seemed that this unfamiliar female was wary of her as well and requested a name before she would give her own. Sequoia was all too happy to oblige and put the other’s fears to rest. “It’s Sequoia, of Sangi’lak.” She almost asked what the stranger was doing so close to the borders, but she held herself back, a more pressing question on her mind. “Did you see a fire?”

A fire so close to Sangi’lak could be devastating in more ways than one and she didn’t want to take the chance that it could still be burning. “I.. I smelled it but when I got here there was nothing.” Her worry was plain in her voice and she waited for an answer apprehensively.

OOC:// It's alright. Sorry for my delay as well. Adari's such an ass. XD

Adari waited in tense silence for the other female to either speak again or show herself. She didn't have to wait very long though for an answer. "It’s Sequoia, of Sangi’lak." Sangi’lak. That must be the pack she was so uncomfortably close to. Sighing softly, Adari nodded before starting to pick up her dropped kindling. "Probably just being paranoid over her pack's borders...' Adari thought with a scowl. Seeing though as she'd received a quick response, Adari supposed it was only fair to return the favor in kind. She hated to give her name, but she new it to be a necessary evil. "I am called Adari, Adari Blaise. I have no pack." She said simply before starting to walk back towards her camp again. If her company was gonna play peekaboo in the darkness, Adari didn't care. She had her own things to be dealing with, not some childish canid playing games. Ready and willing to continue with her task, Adari was a little irked when the unseen voice spoke again from behind. "Did you see a fire?"

Adari blinked and stopped in her tracks, the bundle of wood still held in her arms. 'Are you kdding me?' She thought incredulously. 'How stupid is this wolf?' Frownign softly, Adari moved forward again, listening for the soft crunch of paws in the snow to indicate her shadowy friend was still following and indeed listening. Dropping the wood just off to the side of the smoldering pit that was once her campfire Adari looked out into the trees where she'd last heard Sequoia. "I.. I smelled it but when I got here there was nothing." The worry was plain in the woman's voice and Adari almost laughed. Gesturing animatedly at the embers at her feet so that the other could clearly see her Adari worked hard to keep from being patronizing. "What, you mean this fire?" She rolled her eyes. "It's just a campfire. Nothing to worry about. I had it contained and nice and hot till the wind blew it out." She continued with an annoyed growl.

"Have ya never heard of a loner keeping warm on a cold night?" She asked rather seriously. Adari was starting to believe that this Sequoia woman was slow. She didn't really differentiate between childish innocence and stupidty all that much. And if it turned out to be childish innocence, it would only annoy the Blaise woman faster. She didn't do well with children.

Her ears folded down on her head when the other explained about the fire. Well, she felt like an idiot and the loner made sure to rub in her ignorance with a snarky remark. “Of.. of course I have.” Her deep voice was still lacking in confidence, even as close to the border as she was. The unexpectedness of the situation had her at a disadvantage. “I just didn’t expect there to be a campfire so close to the border.” Speaking of which.. “What are you doing so near our territory line, anyway?” She would have thought a loner would want to stay away from any packs, unless they were looking for a free meal.

She became more suspicious of the stranger as her initial worry subsided. The woman was being awfully snarky for being so close to a pack’s border. Her lip pulled up defensively and she moved to place herself between the loner and her pack’s border.
