Nov 1st, after the pack meeting and Terra's exodus.
WC: 412

Hati said nothing when Terra denounced their kingdom. She had protested Silvano's rise, and now she outright refused to recognize Charlotte as royalty. He had watched helplessly as the angry coyote hybrid gathered her sons and left, and listened with a sinking heart as Silvano bade her never to return. Hati was shaken by all of this change, did not know how to cope with the losses. His mother and father, cold and buried. His oldest sister, Amaranth, left her mate and children to travel to parts unknown. His littermate was now his Queen. Did Terra really have to abandon him too? All along he had been insecure that she liked Skoll better that him. Now she was deserting them both.

He ran on all fours, not even remembering when he had shifted down. The arch of his tail over his back mirrored his late father, tossing with the momentum of his pace. Pale forelegs flashed against the brilliant autumn colors, the carpet of leaves rustling with each bounding leap. His panting breath crystallized in white clouds, vanishing as quickly as it appeared. She couldn't go without saying goodbye to him, he had decided. Amaranth had given him that courtesy, so at least he knew she would be safe and she promised to return someday. Skoll ordered Terra not to disappear, but if the trickster didn't want to be seen, he knew she would be gone from their lives forever. It would be her greatest prank.

His winter coat was growing in, thick malamute fur adding volume to his skinny frame. He did not feel the chill of autumn at all, perfectly built for the cold weather. When he finally drew to a halt, sides heaving as he panted, he was feeling too warm from the exertion. He whined softly, raising his muzzle to try and catch the scent he had been tailing. At some point he had crossed the Court's borders, and his hackles began to rise with fear of the unknown. Someone out here in the lawless territories had slashed his mother to ribbons with a knife, and torn his father's throat out with their teeth. It was no place for a single mother and two pups, and he was so afraid for his friend. Finally he tipped his muzzle back and howled, the same sad mournful cry he sang out at the send-off. Then he stood, trembling and miserable, hoping Terra cared enough to say farewell to him alone.

She had to think about the future. Staying out as a loner wasn't a choice. Neither was staying in a pack she no longer trusted. Terra needed to find someone who would help her raise her pups so they would survive to be adults. She wasn't sure where they would be going yet, but she knew that it would be a place where her pups would be protected and able to learn what they needed to. Her ears had twitched slightly at Skoll's words, but she hadn't looked back. It wasn't her way. Terra was never one to dwell on the past, and the instant her choice was made that was what the pack had become. The relationships were still there, but for her there were no goodbyes or farewells. It was the same as when she'd left her home for the first time after learning she wasn't like the other members of her pack.

Hati's howl surprised her. It wasn't that she didn't think that he would miss her. He was part of her life too, and someone Terra would come back to see when she had found a good home. What surprised her was that it didn't sound off from inside the pack she'd left behind. Turning to her pups she ushered them into a hollow log to wait for her, and trotted back in the direction she'd come. Her tail swayed, pushing back the thought of what they would think of her. Terra didn't have time to dwell on it. Not until she had ensured her family's survival. That came before everything. The coyote paused a short distance before Hati, looking over him. He looked surprisingly young. Terra wasn't that much older than him, yet he managed to look completely and utterly lost.

Moving again Terra nuzzled against Hati. You shouldn't be out here. Your family will worry. Green eyes looked into his darker ones. It'll be okay, moon child. Change happens. We survive. Her words didn't hold any of her usual mirth or carelessness. It was the voice of a survivor. Someone who had seen these things before, and would live to see them again. Besides, someone's got to take care of my magic tricks. I left them all in your house. Her words offered them to him, waiting to see if he would take those items and create his own world of illusions and tricks. They would be less dangerous in his hands, and maybe bring some joy.

He waited for her. The echoes of his howl vanished, and his ears strained for any sounds of response. He had not forgotten what Charlotte said about assigning a loner to guard their borders, and he shuddered to think what would happen if that stranger happened upon him. But Terra came. Her russet coyote fur blended harmoniously with the autumn leaves, perfectly accenting her camouflage as she stood nearby. Her sons were nowhere to be found, but he could smell them on her, and knew the clever mother must have hidden them safely nearby. She would not leave them alone for long, though, and he knew he had to say his piece swiftly.

Terra moved to him them, closing the distance and nuzzling affectionately against him. He whined softly, pressing his cold nose into the smaller hybrid's ruff without giving it a second thought. She spoke first, finding his gaze and holding it with confidence and a serious quality she had never shown him before. Her decision seemed so impulsive, but it was clear from one glance that she was determined to see it through. "I doubt my family will notice... what's left of them, anyway. It's too much change at once," he whispered dully, knowing what a childish plea it was. He had always been slow to adapt to even the smallest changes, and this was just unfair.

"Where will you go?" he asked hoarsely, ears flattened against his narrow skull. "I, I could escort you, or, or hunt for you again," he offered haltingly, though he sensed Terra would scoff at his pitiful attempt to ingratiate himself to her. She knew he was too scared to leave the kingdom, and he knew she was too proud to return. Terra was no blood relative, but she was very much a part of his family, and it was painful to think she was cutting ties through no fault of his own. "Your magic tricks, you're leaving it all behind...?" he asked, swallowing the lump in his throat. It was how he wanted to remember her, with the brilliant cape of tricks.

A whine broke from the blue wolf. Terra listened, sorry that he had to go through this. He felt cold, and Terra did what she could to give him some warmth as she pressed against him. Hati listened as she spoke patiently, her ears flattening at his words. They will notice. Your family might not be as strong as it was before, but they are still strong enough to care for you. She wouldn't trust Charlotte to lead the pack, but she trusted the little family she'd become part of would care for each other through this. Change happens. We adapt. For her adapting meant leaving and finding someplace safe. She wouldn't be gone forever though. She couldn't leave those she considered friends behind, even when she could no longer call them pack.

Shaking her head at his offer Terra grabbed his ear, tugging it playfully. I'll go to where I'm called. Where there's a strong leader that can stand against storms and will help me raise my pups. A place where they won't mind if something goes missing on occasion. Her normal reckless smile flashed for a moment before she calmed. It would be nice, but you can't come with me. I'm not sure where I'm going yet, and your family will need you. I don't know how long this will take. Terra nodded her head at his question. I can always make more. I'll miss my cloak though. So many pockets!

Short ending post since I've been absent all month. ;P Thanks for the thread!

He would cherish the time Terra stayed with his family, short-lived as it was. He silently vowed to move her magic tricks into his room, keeping them close even as her scent faded. The house grew more and more empty. She leaned against him, unusually affectionate, and he thought perhaps she was grieving as well, in her own way. She was never one to dwell on tragedy, but she had lost friends, and it was probably easier for her to start fresh in a new pack than to remain with all the reminders of what she no longer had. Terra was brave. Change, he resisted it as long as he could, but maybe he could adapt. Time would tell. It was hard to see any silver lining, though.

The little coyote nipped at his ear, tugging it playfully as he huffed in exasperation. He pawed at her, halfheartedly smiling at her attempt to cheer him up, but his expression faltered. This was their goodbye. They could not stay here long; it was dangerous for the pups, and for both of them. It was kind of her to linger even as long as she did, and courteous to give him her reasons for leaving, when it seemed no one else questioned it.

Swallowing hard, Hati bowed his head submissively, tail tucked low against his belly. "When you find your home, and the boys are older, please... bring them back to visit. So I can know where you are, and... know you're safe." He didn't have the authority Skoll did, he couldn't order her. He could ask, though. And he could hope.

He drew a shuddering breath and turned away, walking and soon running, fleeing the scene. He couldn't bear to watch her go again, so he put as much distance from this place as he could, not stopping until long after the scent of the Cour des Miracles borders passed him by.
