Adoptables vs Self-Made Characters
#1
I'm getting to the point where I'm going to be picking up a secondary character fairly soonish and I'm having trouble deciding between pursuing one of the various adoptable characters everyone has around here, or going with a character of my own design I've had brewing in my head for a while now.

I'm curious to hear what everyone thinks are the pros and cons of adoptables/original characters, and which they generally prefer.

I say go for whatever you have the most muse before because that is likely the one you will stick with.

I tend to like both myself. I like adoptables because I can't come up with appearances. But then I also have crazy ideas all of the time and tend to be the type of stuff that isn't usually done by others so it won't be found in an adoptable.

But yeah, do whatever works best for you and interests you the most.

I don't really have a preference -- but since most of my characters right now are adopted (all of them except Vesper, actually...) I guess I do have a bias. 8D; Then again -- many of them I more or less created on my own; Skoll and Loki were little babies without personalities and developed into who they are today.

The reason I would prefer adoptables is for the pre-existing connections and chances to plot with people. Loki has a ton of cool family connections in Salsola that really drive him. Even if those connections drop out, it can provide some plot opportunity -- it could be muse-killing, or you could be Skoll and have your player torture you even more after both your parents die and other drama comes up. ;D Family names even can lend to the "cool" factor of a character, so even if you just adopt a "name" from a family, there will still be distant cousins and things to interact with. :>

The cons of having adoptables is contracts. You can't always get the characters you want, and when you do, you might be stuck with doing certain plots with them and not being allowed to do others. Then again -- any restrictions are generally obvious up-front, so when you're "shopping" for an Open Character, they're things to check out. The choice is yours, after all -- you're free to avoid adoptables that aren't appealing, etc. xD The other downside is not getting the one you want for some reason.

I guess -- other than creating a character absolutely from scratch -- name, appearance, etc. -- it's generally as easy to go with an adoptable. If you get a puppy or one with a blank personality, you can pretty much make it "your own" anyway. :3 It can lead to some fun direction if you're stuck on ideas, too. I was going to adopt a couple characters from Sie, for example -- but found two that just inspired me awesomely and kind of surprised me, and got them instead. <3

The pleasure of making your own character is seeing how successful they can turn out to be once you bring them in. You have all the leeway in the world in making them however you like (appearance- and personality-wise), and it can be quite a fun process.

That being said, adopting a character almost guarantees plots and interactions with that particular character's family or existing acquaintances. You can come in with that canine and expect to immediately have interactions in their established pack or with characters related in some way to who you adopted.

It just really boils down to if you wanna start fresh, or actually have someone with family/friends on-board already.

(P.S. lol wat raze said, derp)

I guess I have an extreme bias... Since all of my characters are adopted right now and I like them best... :I Creating characters can be really fun, especially when you have idea that's really crazy and amazing. I just knew that when I focused all my energy on character creation and complex personalities and backstories but often felt they fell flat when I actually got to playing them.

Saying that, I like that adoptables do a lot of that legwork and families and stuff. I like being part of big 'Souls families most of the time or having equally cool characters already intertwined with mine. I don't personally find contracts and stuff bothersome, when I adopt a character I intend to bring them on as soon as possible and play as long as possible. x3

But it's a lot of personal preference and how much you want your new character to have already connections or if you want to find them yourself.

Ooh, fun discussion! It is just personal preference, and in my case, I'm pretty evenly split. ;)

Characters I've adopted usually have loose contracts and a lot of room for personality development; I look for a blank slate, but one with pack culture and family influence to draw on. Quite often I find adoptables to be more inspiring for this reason (and if I was a faster writer, you can believe I'd be stealing quite a few of the open characters listed currently, there are so many good ones!)

Characters I've created are nearly always offspring of my other characters because then I can build them from the ground up. It can take longer to "incubate" ideas, but once I get them where I want them, there's a kind of satisfaction that I love this character and I made them that way. <3 (I have a special attachment to Florina here because I not only designed her but I played out her mom's pregnancy, the birth, her infancy as an NPC, then picked her up at exactly two months old and have played her without break for two years since -- it's a level of commitment I could only achieve since she is totally mine!)
