How to attract adopters?
#1
I know there has been a poll about this before but there has been an influx of new players since then. But yeah, I have such trouble getting a character adopted out and I was wondering what is it that makes a character appealing and what would be a huge turn off.

My Ideas:

Svanr Reyrr:

This is Svanr Reyrr and he comes from Hearg Njorth. Stjar had ended up stealing his horse and giving it to Salvia as a joining gift because she found it tied up somewhere and thought it was abandoned. Svanr would have initially been sent out to look for Stjarna (so he would have be be older than her) since Stjar's mother is worried about her but then he ends up tracking down his missing horse (from there it is entirely open as to what happens to him). He is elf-blooded and of the Reyrr family.

Quote:Reyrr: Members of this family are considered and rumored to be lazy, though these claims may be unfounded. This family is the smallest of the Hearg, consisting of only a few members.

So building off of that I came up with this for him: I was thinking he could appear lazy but not really be. Thinking he is a master tracker and thinking him being elf blooded that he is cool and calm and intellectual and in his head a lot. He doesn't get into skirmishes or do hard labor and so it makes him seem lazy as he stays away from things that are physically taxing. he'd be more of a supervisor type, coming up with all the plans but getting others to do the work the achieve the plan. He can be OCD about cleanliness which could be another reason he doesn't do all that physical stuff cause he can't stand being dirty. He can freak out over a little speck of dirt and have to stop right there and scrub his whole body clean.

Cartier cNPC Adoptable

I haven't given Cartier a cNPC yet but it is on my mind. I want the cNPC to help Cartier with the training of warhorses (so coyote and older than Cartier is a must). I was thinking the cNPC to be male just to fluster Cartier when working with him (cause I like to cause Cartier trouble). I don't have a name or appearance or personality for him. The only thing I have is that he knows how to train warhorses. I was thinking of him being scarred but I dunno if this would make him less appealing.

So yeah, what would make either of these ideas any better and more appealing to others? I know the second one needs lots of fleshing out but that could be worked out with someone who could be interested in him straight away. Or if anyone wants to help me flesh him out, either works for me.

I just want to know what to do to make these ideas appealing to others and have someone want to adopt them. I don't have anything up on either yet as I just have the vague ideas for now (plus I suck at wiki and not sure how much to fill in since I don't mind leaving most everything up to the adopter). But yeah, I want to know if either idea is appealing as is or if I need to add or take away things to make someone want them.

ASK ME I WILL TAKE THEM

I think a good way to adopt out characters is to advertise them, ask people who are looking to join the pack they are in and have yet to pick a character because the worst that can happen is them saying no :)

I adopt a lot! What I normally look for is filled put wiki profiles and potential plotting since I really like having roleplay with a direction (even though I don't necessarily have that now). ALSO, interesting backstories! For examination le, Gunslinger is a pirate with a juicy past and I found that very very appealing :3

As for turn-offs, maybe incomplete profiles and no basic or suggested personality traits.

Hope this helps, yo!

For me, if the character is older like not a puppy as you are doing, I like a good balance between like what Kite was saying with direction and history but also like not so strict that it would make myself or an adopter feel worried all the time about inconsistencies or something. Sometimes it might depend on the character too but if I'm adopting I like there to be a little flexablity to put my own touches to the character. Family seems to be a plus too as far as threads go. Nearly anyone always seems happy to throw their character at someone if they are relatives. So maybe trying to find on board family could help. Sometimes characters with no family might have a harder time getting into more plots and things. Regardless if the character gets a long with family or not, it seems to add more fun with roleplaying being interactive and all and seems to open more doors and potential. But I'm sure everyone is a little different and have their own things that gets them interested in a character.

I like what you got going on so far with the NPC. But naturally as a horse trainer myself, a warhorse trainer sounds freaking awesome so IDK if its just me xD And knowing personally what its like with horses everyday it would be realistic to me if he had some sort of scars or old injuries because its unavoidable really especially if hes been doing it a while. Horses are unperdictable animals no matter what to its a matter of when you're going to get hurt not if. Then add to it he's training them for war, thats a whole added list of dangers. If you are worried about anything specific that might turn off adopters, maybe have some ideas and let them choose. Best success finding adopters :)

I'm not good with rejection, just the thought of being rejected makes me anxious. It is also what makes me have trouble reaching out and talking to others.

Yeah, I don't have a wiki up but I know I need to. I just fret over investing so much time into something (as wiki takes me forever to do) only for it to sit there and collect dust.

I tend to be open about things. People can make up whatever and do whatever and it doesn't bug me. I usually only ever have a few basic things in mind and people can build off that. I have issues with fleshing things out and I worry that makes them entirely unappealing because I don't have everything figured out.

I've adopted both of my characters and will adopt my next one too probably :) Personally, I look for characters that ARE fleshed out and have very specific quirks that resonate with me. If I see a quirk that a character has that reminds me of myself of myself from the past, I connect with them. The more details, the better for me. IMO it would be better to have a lot of details, but also say that the adopter can change them or that they are just ideas and can be discussed.

Because see, if you don't have any details or much put out on the page for them, then what makes that character any different from all the others on the list? You gotta have something to set them aside that isn't artwork, because I feel like if a person just picks a character based on their pretty art, then they aren't going to be that invested in the character once the "newness" wears off.

I totally agree with what others have said about having family on board or tying them in with plots. I specifically picked Aithne up because of the the many Marinos on board, as well as the potential for future plots. Sammiie put a lot of thought into his personality and wiki info and I found that very appealing. :) Same for Paruvanni, the main attractor was the amazing history that Hannah had already planned out with Vidar. The potential for plots and fun is probably #2 for me as far as importance goes.

This is all totally just my opinion too, but the name of the character is probably #1...if they have a name that I don't like or that is too "foreign" and hard to connect to, I find it a big initial turn-off and won't even bother to look at the character I'm afraid :( I feel bad saying that, but name is a huge factor to me. If they have a name I don't like or can't connect with then I am not able to really envision anything else for their personality or history.

I'm not sure if anything I have said is real helpful, but it's what I have considered as a new player who has adopted twice. Don't be afraid to flesh them out more and give them a really killer backstory or some quirks - I feel that having too many details is much, much better than having an empty profile. The empty ones I just go right on past and am not interested in at all.

Edit: I also consider appearance a bit, if they have something unique about their appearance that sets them aside, that helps too :) Like paruvanni's scars or Aithne's beautiful bright green eyes. Both of those were very appealing to me ^^

I haven't quite adopted characters, and I'm not a huge adoptable person because it makes me suuuper anxious (haha), so maybe my input isn't so great??

But in looking for an adoptable, my priorities would be:

1. Potential for interesting plots/threads. If the character has family on board, etc.
2. How different they are from what I'm currently playing (something unique about them, appearance or personality-wise)
3. If I can reasonably sustain interest in the character and feel that I can invest myself to their growth

I think some people love fleshed out adoptables and having a wiki and tons of history, some people love having a few basic traits and a blank slate, and some people love whatever is in-between.

I do think making a wiki might be your best bet. Even if you spend a lot of time making the wiki, it won't be a waste because it's going to increase appeal for the character (the open character list is very bare-bones, but the wiki allows for the personality/potential to shine through), and if someone takes the character, they have a place to jump-off or always refer to for playing their character. It might collect a little dust, but dust ain't never hurt nobody x)

Anyway, I hope you can find someone to adopt your cool character! It's not always the case that your adoptable is undesirable, sometimes it's just a matter of time and new faces. Not a lot of people can juggle more than one character (*raises hand*), and not a lot of people stick around for long enough. I think he's got a lot of interesting potential, and I would definitely consider him if I was on the market. x)

Fleshing is an issue for me. I don't want to be too limiting by given too many details. Plus I can't even flesh my own characters. I start with basic ideas and let them build and grow into themselves. If I try and pin down everything about a character from the start then they tend to veer off from what I had in mind. So that has always been an issue for me.

I don't want to get super excited for something for it to never happened. I was super excited for Cinareae and for Versace but nothing has gone anywhere with them. It is just disheartening to have all these (what I think are) interesting ideas and want to play them out but the characters are just sitting around.

I'm apparently the complete opposite of most people: i prefer complete free-range characters, from designing them, to naming/aging them, the more freedom i have the better, because i find restrictions really off putting/kinda limit ways in which i'd personally want to develop the character, thus taking the fun out of playing them.

After complete free-range, i guess i'm a design nabber. If i see a character with a design i like, that has a fair bit of freedom, then i'll go for that. Basically i like either complete freedom to do as a please in all aspects or a set, really attractive design with as much freedom in other areas as possible. This said, i'm ridiculously picky over what kind of designs i like ^^; So normally i do prefer to be able to design my own :O

Not usually one to comment on OOC topics, but I'm also someone who prefers less information. If I feel it's crucial to the character or whatever the attachments are, I ask questions. Not that information is a bad thing, but depending on the sort it is, it can be limiting. Then again, it's always different strokes for different folks! :)

On a related note, I think a lot of times people don't adopt characters because they've had terrible experiences prior (which for the record, I cannot recall really having that issue here). I usually do not adopt because I've adopted from people in the past who completely did the helicopter hover nonsense and scrutinized everything I did (or didn't do). I'm certain at some point in my life I was also one of those people as well. Some people simply do not want to disappoint or squander the opportunity too, so they'll avoid it out of fear that they'll disappoint who they're adopting from, or otherwise irritate them or go inactive or whatever the reason. Some people also need incentive too... it's really a tricky thing I suppose.

When I consider adoptables, having a Wiki and some visual idea of what the character looks like are two things that hook me initially. The Wiki doesn't have to be filled out; just a brief, vague snippet of what the character may be like +/- any family/friend/enemy relationships is perfect for me. In fact, I prefer a Wiki that isn't filled in too much so I can do what I want with it :) And extravagant artwork is not a must. Even if all the character has is a completed Lupus pixel that's good enough for me.

To solidify my interest, having some sort of plot or thread opportunities and curious little quirks is a must. That said, I also look for the chance to have my own ideas and the ability to mold the character as I see fit. I tend to shy away from characters with extremely strict contracts unless they still allow me to make the character my own.

I'm surprised Svanr hasn't been snatched up yet because he does seem like an interesting character, but this is the first I've heard of him. So I'm going to echo Kite and say advertisement is also incredibly helpful c: If you ever need anyone to color you up some pixels, I love working with smaller things like that so don't be afraid to hit me up!

Okay, I'm glad I'm not the only one into free-form and not overly detailed characters. It makes me feel better about not having everything all figured out in advanced. So I'm glad that is not a complete and utter turn off.

I'm one of those people that just likes to see a character in play and get at least one thread with the character. I don't care what is done or what happens to a character. Heck, I kill off my own all the time. I'm pretty much just excited to have one in play.

I'm bad at doing appearances and designing characters so I always get someone else to do it. Plus I can't art either. Raze is the one that designed Svanr for me.

But yeah, this is the first I've talked about Svanr openly. I've only told Raze (as she helped me has out ideas) and Sie (as I got permission for a Hearg character). I've been worried about presenting him to the general public cause I'm anxious about what will be said about him.

If you want to do pixels then that would be wonderful. It is entirely up to you though. I don't know how to do any of that myself. In fact Imma have to pester Raze for hex codes.
