QQ: Armor?
#1
Hey! This has probably almost-certainly been answered somewhere before, but I couldn't find a mention of it myself so I hope it's alright for a bit of a re-questioning. Basically, how possible is, or what is the extent, of Luperci armor? How widespread is it here in the 'Souls area? Has it gone into plate yet, or is only leather armor possible? My first character here is highly humanized (the concept of Luperci humanization is really unique and I love it!), something of a 'royal knight' type; literally more than figuratively - his history is that he's a bodyguard, and I figured since Luperci can craft weapons and have a good sense of 'kingdom' (lookin' at you, Casa and Cour!), that armor is also possible. But I'm asking here real quick juuust in case on the off side that it's not. Thanks guys!

Also, side note, if I can't think of anything on my own I'm sure if I could leave it up to interpretation, but what would you say would be a good place for a character like this to come from?

Hey Sly!

Luperci would mostly wear handcrafted leather armor. The RP Guide has a little information on this:
Quote: Armor can be crafted from leather and custom-made to fit a particular Luperci. Metalworked armor is generally not possible for Luperci excepting very simplistic plates (e.g., a chest plate supported by leather). Gauntlets and greaves able to move with a Luperci’s foot motion are too complicated for even advanced metalworkers to craft.
Scavenged armor would not fit Luperci (and would basically be deteriorated at this point), and since metalwork is at the very limit of Luperci ability, leather would be the most common type of armor since Luperci can craft it. Scavenged metal beaten into simple, inflexible plates could be possible, too, if less comfortable.

The most civilized Luperci would live in the eastern hemisphere—there’s also some information on the guide about this. :) It describes Luperci societies worldwide. Your best bet would be for your character to come from overseas—as long as you are realistic about their travel.

I’d read over the resources I linked; they should hopefully explain a lot and give you some inspiration for your character! ^^ Feel free to ask more questions if you’re not certain about something, too.

Oh man, now I feel a bit silly that there's a section on it in the RP guide, I wouldn't have thought to look in 'Weaponry', sorry about that *flails* I hope it wasn't too much trouble for you to fetch! Thank you very, very much!

I figured that part about scavenged armor not fitting Luperci, especially mine at seven feet, heh heh. Too big!

I couldn't help but notice:

Quote:Armor is largely impractical in most situations: its weight and disadvantage to speed and agility make it a poor choice except against unarmed foes.

May I ask why this is the case, especially if Luperci were only to use leather armor? From what I know, not even the heaviest battle armor (which is not used in this case) was heavier than your average full rucksack (of course this is only talking about battle armor, since specialized armor for lancing and such was much heavier since it didn't need to be made to allow free movement). It was still easy to be considerably agile in, because the weight was distributed among your entire body, of course.

Is it because even the most advanced Luperci, would just not be skilled enough (at least as of yet) to craft such things? Or something else? :O

Either way, I'll be sure to update my ideas for this character accordingly, thank you again!~

This is likely because Luperci are not skilled enough yet. I did not write the guide though, haha. I imagine it wouldn’t impede mobility and speed too much, especially if well-made—but the more armor a Luperci wears, the harder it will be to move around.

I’m not well-versed in armor types (weight, durability, etc.) but I would imagine that the range of motion would be impeded (around the joints and other bendy parts, haha) by Luperci-made armor. They are still fairly primitive, even at their most advanced. It is more common to see Luperci with leather chestplates, arm guards (vs gauntlets, which are too intricate), and similar simplistic pieces here and there, rather than a whole “suit.”

And again—this is all leather armor. Metal armor as we think of it is impossible for Luperci to make.

Disclaimer: I’m not an expert on this, hahaha. My research is also impeded by LARPing sites and Skyrim screenshots.

No worries, I'm certainly no expert either! I gotcha! I can also completely see that most, if not all Luperci, might make a bigger deal out of it than it actually is to have their speed even slightly weighed down by leather armor. After all, it's an important part for any predator, and with canine intelligence it would be very difficult to fight that urge to want to be as fast as you can, yeah? So to them, it probably would seem like a 'poor choice', even though it might not actually be in a one on one battle ;).

In additional poorly-crafted armour (that fits poorly or doesn't bend in the right places, etc) being more common than well-crafted armour, it's worth considering the amount of practice an individual might need in order to move as efficiently in armour as they can without. Even if the armour is light and moves perfectly, there is skill and practice involved in wearing it effectively. All Luperci, even untrained and young, know how to fight in their natural bodies to some extent, and donning armour without spending the time to also learn how to move and fight in armour, could definitely be more of a hindrance than a boon.

I think the line in the RP Guide was more specifically referring to metal armour though, as further discouragement alongside the fact that it's on the very edge of Luperci capabilities. :>
it was me. i broke it.

Another thing worth mentioning is any armor gets hot, especially when you take into consideration wearing it atop fur. A Luperci could get overheated if they did too much in armor for too long just like a person might :>
