Character Design Poll/Discussion

Just for funsies, but this could also help people with adoptable characters/designing puppies! This isn't about realism per se, as realistic canine markings range from solid-color to very complicated too.

It's obviously a personal preference, as there are pros and cons either way. A really simple design, ie: one solid pelt color, can be easy to describe as well as find reference photos for. However, it also won't stand out in a crowd the way a complex design with many recognizable markings and scars would. (See: Kaena Lykoi!)

--As for me, I think my current characters all count as "intermediate". My own preferences lean toward intermediate/complex, especially when looking at adoptable characters. I like my characters to look unique, even if it's a pain to have to color them for hours just to get it perfect. xD
(For example, I've been stalking my favorite adopty for weeks, Isolde, because her patchwork colors are just so cute! Somebody adopt her already so I can stop drooling.) <3

Opinions/thoughts welcome!

I'm a complex, because i like complex things. Not only personality wise but appearance wise too. It's horrible how complex some of my charries are (especially mars because it's so hard to get him art that is completely accurate. Half the artists quit on me when i'm like "this scar goes here, and blah blah blah) but....I like making them prettyful. I find one color charries to be dull and boring to draw (and i draw my charries more than you guys see) and even harder to color because they are just that one color (mostly talking about shading) so yeah, i like lots of colors. I think the least complex charrie that i've had appearance wise was Daisuke back before he dyed his liberty spikes and he was just gold colored. I'm sure he's the only charrie that i've had that's just been one color (and even that wasn't for too long lol)

and you should totally adopt isolde....js

All of my characters have had pretty boring designs, lol, but this has never really concerned me. Kiriska was solid black. Daituki was solid white. Laruku was two-toned brown. Arkham was two-toned grey. Cass is albino. XD LAAAZYYYYY. Kyrios, who I will be surprised if I pick up within the year, will be my first character to have more than two colors??

I guess I also really dislike needing to remember a bunch of stuff, especially since I tend to draw my characters a fair amount? Near the end of Laruku's life, I really couldn't be assed to remember where the hell all his scars were. <_< I think Laruku actually also lost some markings along the way because I forgot about them, haaa.

ETA: Oh, I guess I also designed Rachias and Myrika. They are more complex than my standard crop, but Kaena brought so many cool things to the mix it seemed like a waste not to utilize some of them, lol.

All of my characters, aside from the ones that I've adopted, are quite simple in nature and color. While Levi has more then just one color, I often describe him as looking like moving flame because he's just that awesome! :D But no, really. I usually go with simple in the design because it's easier for me to find photos to manipulate into my characters. While Whispers is my most complex character(originally designed), he was originally meant to be just white but J and Axelle(No surprise) inspired me to create a character with a somewhat complex coloring. I've only come across one picture that looks anything like Whispers that I could change and that was something that I found when going throught he pictures that Souls offered back on the last board. But I'm somewhat too lazy to truly get into the creative aspect of creating a character with dozens of different colors but when Levi has pups, hopefully with Keldava! ;) the pups will definitely be a cross blend of different colors that he'll know are his and his mother's combined, as well as Keldava's side of course. They are just too cute together. :P

But I think one of the other reasons I tend to go with simple is because my vocabulary is somewhat lacking in vivid words these days so I have a problem trying to describe my character when in the actual post. I like to paint pictures with my words, images that spring to life if possible. :) Guess that's all I can really say about it. :D

J: It's not like I've been coloring linearts or anything. :o

Designing puppies is especially interesting to me! <3 I usually focus solely on genetic traits, like Kiri said about Kaena, or Ronnie with Keldava. For me, this leads to more complex designs because I want to incorporate everything all at once. xD

Ooo, this is a super interesting topic for me!

There is DEFINITELY a trend in colors/pelt patterns that appeal to me, both as an artist and a player. The biggest draw-in for me is when a character has natural coloring for its species, with little artistic variants to keep it exciting. For example, I love LOVE Kaena's coloring. The simple greys mixed with that lovely red muzzle-blush draws me right in - Natural hues with a slightly saturated, but still natural, focal point. It's the reason that I couldn't resist China - Of all my characters, her colors are still probably my favourite, and I really only tweaked them from her original design!

Besides that, I love variants of pelt colorations that occur throughout the animal kingdom. There are so many wild, amazing pelt styles that appear in real animals! Which is why my sets of design adoptables were all based on random critters who I liked the look of ;3

I find that too many saturated colors makes the character appear more unrealistic, which detracts from the quality of the character for me. And while plain single-pelt colors are good for testing shading techniques on, I tend to get bored of drawing them repetitively.

I'm definitely an intermediate. When I was younger I was obsessed with creating crazily complicated characters all because I thought having normal character would get me accused of being boring or plagiarising. So my OC's ended up with anorexia, scars, tattoo's, mohawks, emo fringes, piercings, and crazy clothes. But now I've toned things down, I recognised that I don't need extreme characters to be original. I still like extreme designs and often find myself having to resist creating a sparkledog.

On 'Souls I prefer dark furred designs. I don't know why, I've just always preferred dark wolves and dogs. I also prefer symmetric designs where all the markings match ('Cos it's easier to draw >.<). But I love looking at the designs of the 'chaotically' marked characters; the dogs with merle patterns or spots and patches.

I probably fall into the intermediate range. I mean, Tayui is preeetttyy basic and Claudius just has some spots. XD But Wraith is a lot more complex! (Though, like Djiacamo, I used to design insanely-detailed unrealistic animals, though mine were Neopets :> )

I just really like realistic appearances and I do a lot of work to make sure my character's appearance reflects their heritage. For example, when Alli and I were designing puppies, we wanted to have a wolf-dominant dog hybrid, but we wanted a dog species that would be able to survive in the apocalypse and still lend some cool coat colours. I suggested the koolie and she really ended up liking it!

The coat colours inherited from the dog side ended up influencing three of the puppies: one got a broken "solid" tri-colour, one was a dilute red merle, and one got a merle patterning... in a skunk stripe. :D

In general, I like characters with lots of different fur patterning! ...which is tough to draw, so I usually use photos. :3 I've also recently sort of fallen in love with the 'common' eye colours of gold and brown. They're so pretty!

I use simple/somewhat realistic coat patterns for my characters since it is easy to find and people aren't confused by what I mean with describing them. But I do like to see others with complicated designs.

Most of my characters are either simple, like Skye having two colors or Element having just one, or natural colors like Nathaniel. I enjoy simpler designs because when looking at the wild, most canines don't have crazy detailed unique designs and such, and I like to try to keep things natural for my characters ^^ As for accessories, Skye is the only one I have that has bracelets and necklaces and things like that, otherwise I feel like I'd lose track :p

I love simple designs. Haku and Laruku's were the all time best in my opinion ^^

I think I fall between intermediate and complex when it comes to character design. Overly complex characters have their draw backs, although they can be really fun to draw. Vesper for instance, is complex because she has a lot of shades and tones plus the numerous amount of scars that just keep growing. But it's fun. Kohaku is also somewhat complex. He has subtleties to his coat that many don't pick up on. However, I can't claim all of my character designs are complex. Kiara started out as plain white and only got her scars later on. Hotaru is pretty simple, she has three colors interspersed at regular intervals. Most of the puppies I design for Kiara have a white base and subtle accents. I've been playing around recently with asymmetrical and subtle designs, but sometimes they are just a pain in the butt. Although, I am proud to say that Raeka's design contains 100% natural colors.

I think I'm about the same as Ariel, although I think I tend to stay closer to intermediate. Most simple character designs... well, when I make them, bore me, but I do so envy a well put-together simple design that someone else makes. A friend of mine has an uncanny skill in making her simply designs very interesting and unique. For me I need at least a few colors and symmetrical markings and possibly some scars. I only have a few decent simple designs... like Leon, I guess. I guess Maxen counts too but he's got dog marking so that doesn't count! I do like some complex designs sometimes though. Every now and then I'll go for a complex design that actually doesn't have matching and symmetrical markings. xD BUT I'm a little OCD and need markings to match and line up and look the same on both sides, otherwise it bugs me.

Having designed a couple characters now, I think I can say I prefer symmetry, but not solids.

Hanna, my first, was all black, but she had a tattoo (with a gradient! I was so proud of myself. xD) and gained some easy-to-draw scars, across her nose, over her shoulder, and maybe the most difficult one on her calf. ...Case in point, the hind leg scar on that pixel is wrong. Fffff.

Desiree, her daughter, had a complex pattern just because she was blue merle. But she was still fairly symmetrical in pattern. The merle was across her back, fringed with tan, and white below that, and her face was merle and tan.

Asgeir is complex in the number of colors but they flow pretty naturally from one to the next and are symmetrical except from tan to cream on his legs. Oh, and his bandana.
[Image: xZmvC.png] (Nat and Despi=coloring and image)

EDIT: I didn't design Callum, but he's simple and asymmetrical. :D I colored the wrong template for him. And I forgot Esmerelda. She's tricolor brown.

Simple. Lyris is just one color with a scar, you can't get better than that. ;3
I personally think that really complicated designs are too confusing too remember, and for that reason I don't like them that much. They're almost really easily forgotten. D;
I think almost all of my characters fall under the simple category, on-site and off. I may have a few intermediate, but that's as far as I go. Distinguishing symbols and scars, I think, are a good step toward making your character more memorable. Like for Lyris, she has a unique scar on her face, and that's how I think most remember her . :p

I enjoy intermediate designs, mostly, I guess? Anything that's over-the-top hard to draw unless you use layers of colors and smudging to achieve the effect... Bleh. Pretty to look at, often gorgeous to look at, but I prefer something that takes me fewer steps to color. I would list all the little design things I'd like but this post is probably gonna be long enough without it. :|

Vesper is my most complex design right now that I can think of, but her design has become like spelling Unatsikanogeni's name; it comes naturally me to just do it because I'm so used to it. She's very detailed in her several million scars, but for anything besides her big ones (mostly on her face or the ones she had before coming to 'Souls) I tend to just scribble until it looks good. There's not really canon list of where scars on her body should be, because that would drive me insane. >___>; But yeah, she's complex-ish I guess?

That said, I do tend to tweak designs once I get them -- or at least I did so with Skoll, I think. He was a bit different in his first picture Meghann and Marie showed me, with more of white ankles than paws, and a more desaturated color lining the white, I think. Now, he's mostly cream with highlights of yellow and some white and ginger on him. P: And his tattoo isn't too intricate.

Most of my characters happen to follow a pattern in design, though. One base color, a lighter color "below" (for muzzles, eyes, bellies, paws, etc), a darker color "above" (usually, like ears and saddles and whatnot), and perhaps an accent color (like the Lykoi red, or Vesper's grey smudges, or Loki's yellow blush). That's how I tend to color them, at least, because it makes the process easier for me if I think about that basic stuff before laying down any additional details (scars, a fifth color, accessories).

I prefer intermediate designs as well, though my toes dip in simple and advanced, crazy, super hard to memorize- that stuff too.

First off, Sky (and her sister, Dusk).
Sky's design was fairly simple back in the day. One floppy ear, one non-floppy, blue eyes and a brown coat. Dark stockings, tail tip and cheek stripes which were later joined with darker eyelids and a stripe of dark across the shoulders. The split tongue and torn ears happened and her design started to solidify more after that. Her hips rounded out with parenthood, her shoulders broadened from training, her expressions became less clear and she became an overall loony just to add to it all. Her optime form has gotten quite a few work-overs in recent times, so her hair and build have changed with 'age'.

Dusk is much the same in that, her design is a basic brown scheme with orange hues instead of blue, like Sky. Her scar was a 'souls only trait that didn't originally follow over to any other canon until recently. She's designed, originally, as a secondary (backstory) character for Sky and nothing else, but I fell in love with her and she quickly got a huge role in Sky's life.

I designed Cody and Lena, too. Samual Dean (who's yet to be canon) was also my work. Cody's based off your typical mutt dog, Lena's black and blind to 'mock' Liam's butterflies back then (my mockery, not Sky's :P) and Sammy was based off of one of Shaw's pre-souls designs. ;D

Ah, and then there's Matteo. He was the simple rabbit-eared, girly albino... then he earned his scars. Then tattoos. Then dyed fur. Then posturing and crazy looks and... well, the New Matteo will probably not be that same girly-figured boy people remember but he's still drop-dead gorgeous when he wants to be. Anyhow. His tattoos are the most intricate thing about his design and even the pictures of them on Souls are severely inaccurate. His old Anathema/Catholic Cross tattoo, scarred out on his chest, isn't covered anymore and instead of freaky stripes that make no sense, his torso is inked with ribs, and a spinal column. To add to it, his symbolic crow wing that rests only on his left shoulder. The whole tattoo is on his left side more than his right.

ANYWAY. Matteo's is the most difficult design now. Ink wasn't hard, and Krys is simple. Matteo's my pride and joy when it comes to character design though. I figure, if I'd tap that, then it must be good. XD
