Bracket grumpily thumped one paw in front of the other, the immense pads sinking into the soft snow. In this climate he stood out look a sore thumb, his unkempt black fur creating a striking contrast to the icy blanket underfoot. To him, however, this wasn't an issue. He wasn't scared of anything that could be lurking in the undergrowth; his towering figure and even larger superiority complex was defence enough against the spindly wolves he often saw around. Exhaling heavily from his enormous black nose, the male continued to make his way along the rocky terrain, nostrils widening in search for something - anything - to feast upon. The definition of his shoulder bones was becoming more and more prominent as of late. Despite this, he still refused to acknowledge that he was more hungry than usual, simply shoving it to the back of his mind. I'm fine he thought, there is absolutely no way I, hands-down the toughest bear in this region, could ever be anything but at my prime. That's a fact.

The wind howled, sending flurries of snow scattering around the clearing he passed through, and Bracket did his best to navigate over the uneven ground despite this. Suppressing a shudder, he quickened his pace, moving his thick, crow coloured limbs less idly. Flecks of the ice stuck gently to his fur, occasionally being shaken off as he lumbered along. It wasn't until a bush rustled that his ears pricked up and he halted abruptly, sniffing the air for any giveaway scents. It wasn't an unusual bush; just a common piece of flora that otherwise would've gone unnoticed, but it was big enough to hide a mammal of roughly his size. Bracket turned his gigantic head, licking his lips at the prospect of prey.

OOC: Yessssss! I get a thread with a bear! Sorry Lucian is a dick tho. :D Also, sorry for the enormous post. Truly no need to match the length! <3

Careful though he was with his appearance, Lucian recognized (if grudgingly) that he could not just be a handsome thing sitting pretty among the scholars and swindlers and warriors of Sapient. With his mother falling into such a hopeless state of selfish abandon as he considered her to be in, the young Amaranthe had learned the necessities of fending for himself and being a responsible member of his pack rather early on. Granted, as a Juvenis, he had gotten by with a lot of emotional blackmail, skillful bullying, and remorseless swindling — things that he had carried with him well into his time as a Cessavi and, more likely than not, beyond. Taking advantage of those idiots who couldn't see for themselves that they were being deceived left him with no regret. Lucian was simply an opportunist and, so he thought, a good one at that.

But emotional blackmail only went so far and age was not always on one's side. As Lucian grew into his feet and lost his puppy fat and eventually shifted, Sapiens were less willing to share their physical wealth with him. Intellectual wealth, however? Oh yes, there was an abundance of that now he was deemed old enough. And while at first Lucian had been resistant to such tactics (it was so much easier to simply beg food off of someone than it was to hunt it himself), he quickly began to recognize the benefits of learning such important necessities as hunting and fighting and thinking.

They increased his chances of winning. And Lucian so loved to win.

So it was that the young man found himself outside Sapient territory, spear in hand, ready to hunt. Though his thick pelt made him well adjusted for this time of year, Lucian was a man of refined tastes. While he could regularly be seen wearing his usual outfit (a flowy blouse beneath a fitted vest with leather breeches covering his bottom half) hunting was rarely a clean activity and he was not willing to stain his good clothes. So, today, his garb was simpler (though still rather cultured): buckskin pants, tunic, and gloves with a simple blouse beneath. If he had one, a hat would complete the ensemble but no matter. One day, he told himself, he would acquire one.

Snow crunched underfoot as he followed scent trails. Though he was only mediocre at best when it came to spear hunting, the young man brought one with him anyway. Archery was his true interest but he had yet to find anyone who could teach him and Sapient didn't even have the equipment in storage to allow him practice. Thankfully, his pack was allied with the water-loving creatures to the west and they, he had heard, had such items. As he walked, Lucian thought that he should make a trip to them and see what sort of inventory and people with such knowledge that they had.

Just as he was wrapping up these thoughts, the bold scent of a bear hit his nose and caused the young man to stop. He cast acidic green eyes around him and then— there! It as not hard to spot the beast against the sparkling ivory backdrop of snow. A flash of wild ideas popped into his head. What if he fought and brought home the carcass of a bear? How impressed Sloan would be! And how jealous Dareios would feel.

But the bear was huge and Lucian... well, the young man could barely successfully hunt rabbits let alone bears. Regretfully, the Sapien let his wild fantasies slip out of his mind and allowed himself to return to reality. The sound in the bushes turned his head and he scented prey. "That's mine, bear," Lucian warned the beast in a low growl. If he could intimidate the bear enough to make it run away then he might have a chance at whatever was in the bushes. But then another idea prodded him. What if he let the bear make the kill and he snatch the prey out from beneath it's nose? "But maybe we could work together..."

Lucian had heard stories of bears knowing the common tongue and many of the cats around Sapient did, too. But the young man had never actually met a bear before so whether or not the stories were true he had yet to see.

OOoooooh I love him!! And don't worry, Bracket's a bit of a jackass too.

Bracket's giant head whipped around, fixing fiercely upon the well-groomed figure who dared to question the ownership of whatever prey that scuffled in the bushes. Could he not see that he'd obviously seen it first? That it obviously had his name written all over it? He instantly, and instinctively, sized up the threat that the hybrid imposed. At first, his amber eyes were drawn to the pretentious fabrics that clothed his body and he stifled a laugh, however, it quickly became apparent that he possessed a spear - dangerous weaponry to an unarmed creature like himself. Bracket would not let himself submit to this luperci though, regardless of the risk.

At the proposal of working together, the bear hesitated. In one aspect it was beneficial; it would be quicker and easier to take down the animal, and he could get this stranger off his back. On the other hand, that would be suggesting that he needs help to hunt, and this simply wouldn't do.

"Give me one good reason why I should work with you to take down prey that is clearly mine anyway." He growled, crinkling his snout and baring his teeth threateningly. Perhaps trying to intimidate an intelligent creature like a luperci, that branded a spear with intention to spill blood - whether it be his or the prey's - wasn't such a good idea. He pushed this intruding thought to the back of his mind, confident in his own abilities. Obviously he was the superior animal here, as he always was. There was nothing that he would let stand in the way of this catch.

It had been quite a while since the mammal had feasted upon something worthwhile, as evident from his slight lack in body fat. Times were getting hard, and if he were to even consider hibernation this year, he'd need to at least maintain a healthy weight. Winter was never a kind time to anyone, but with the increasing competition with the canine creatures it was harder and harder to find a decent meal. No way would he let this one escape his clutches.

OOC: Hahahah! <333 Bracket's self-importance is everything to me. x3

His typical wry smile slipped easily across his face. Lucian regarded the bear with a look of admiration that, while fabricated, the young man hoped looked genuine. So the stories were true. Fascinating, he thought and wondered how easy it would be to trick a bear.

"Just one?" he asked loftily, shrugging carelessly. Off to a good start, he thought with arrogance as he lowered his spear. If all the bear wanted was a single good reason, Lucian could provide a single good reason: "Success," he said simply, acidic eyes rolling over the bear's onyx pelt. Beneath all that fur and skin the beast's skeletal structure stuck out more sharply in some places that made the Sapien wonder. Was he ill? Was he that terrible a hunter? Either way, he was determined to use any weakness he could perceive from the bear to his advantage.

Leaning his weight casually on the haft of the spear, Lucian continued. "With the two of us working together, our chances of success would be so much better. Wouldn't you agree?"

Growing up in Sapient, with a mother who, though no longer, was once of a respectable stature, had provided Lucian with plenty of material with which he could learn. But it had always been its people that interested him the most. It was fascinating, seeing how different Luperci made the same (or different) decisions; how those from the same family lived entirely opposing lives; how emotions, sentiment, and nostalgia drove some to do or say things they didn't believe. The minds of others were not unlike puzzles: once you figured out the pattern it was not so difficult to deduce what made them tick, so to speak.

But if Lucian thought he knew anything, it was that people loved to believe that the origin of a successful idea had came from their own, self-proclaimed "bright", little minds.

The issue here, however, was that bears were definitely not Luperci. For all Lucian knew, they didn't even have emotions or grandiose ideas of themselves. Probably they were like other animals and cared only for food, sex, and sleep. Which, if the Sapien was being honest, didn't sound so bad of a lifestyle to himself but could quickly put a halt on his plan.

Whatever was rustling around in the bushes either hadn't caught onto their interest in hunting it or was too daft to make a run for it while they were arguing about whose it was. Either way, Lucian worried that the longer they stood idle and played mind games the greater the chances were that the creature would evade them and they'd both be without a meal.

Bracket lowered his hackles slightly, chewing over the words which slid out of the Sapien's mouth. His tone was cool, there was no threatening edge to it, but his expression reeked of condescension. Still, the point he made was irritatingly right. What would be preferred? Risking the embarrassment of failing to catch the prey, or tolerating the cooperation with this upright canine and succeeding in gaining a meal? Despite how much the air of superiority emanating from the male bothered him, there was a confidence radiating through those chartreuse eyes that made it seem like he could back up any claim he made.

"Fine. I guess you're right. I'll agree to hunt with you, but not because I want to. I absolutely don't. But we might as well make it easy to take down whatever's over there He grunted, gesturing to the location of the rustling with his snout. Allowing his pride to crumble ever so slightly was almost physically painful for Bracket, but the prospect of food was simply overpowering. He pricked his ears forward, and allowed himself to take a few quiet, but clumsy strides. His far from delicate figure lowered slightly, trying to hide itself. Stealth wasn't his greatest aspect, and he was much more accustomed to hooking fish from a stream, yet he was determined not to allow this stranger to steal any of his rightful limelight, and simply went ahead with it anyway.

All the while, he was consistently sizing himself up against Lucian. They were roughly the same height if he reared up onto his hind legs, and although he lacked weaponry suck as a spear, his claws had quite a fine length to them and he was sure he could use his weight to tackle the luperci. Perhaps, he thought (and this was only a perhaps), he could snatch the prey before his rival could get to it, and intimidate him away from the carcass. He knew that he could look terrifying, he'd been practising his growl in the reflection of water, and a few swats of the paw and a flash of the teeth could be enough to send anyone running. It was a foolproof plan.

OOC: If you wanted the prey to be something else just let me know! I just chose something randomly. c:

With growing satisfaction, Lucian watched as the ebony hackles along the beast's back began, slight though it was, to relax. It seemed a good sign to the young Amaranthe, if bears were anything like canines, but still he kept a comfortable distance from it. Though he had certainly never tangled with such a creature before, those broad paws and long nails looked more dangerous than his wimpy spear... especially considering his ability to wield the weapon was mediocre at best.

But then the bear replied with a grunt, agreeing to his suggestion that they hunt the prey beast together and increase their chances of success. Lucian's smile curled his lips. "Of course," he replied, attempting to pacifying the bear's unhappiness at agreeing to such an unlikely team. "But I can't argue your logic. With the two of us working together, we're sure to make short work of that prey." Or you will, Lucian thought slyly. I'll just reap the rewards when you're done.

The young hybrid waited for the bear to take the lead, which he did with surprising (if ungainly) quietude. Lucian followed after, both hands around the haft with its sharp spade pointing out from his body. He hunched over it and padded after the beast, pausing when it paused and glancing brightly at its dark face. "I'll flush it out in your direction," the young man suggested through a whisper, regarding the bear only a another moment before he slipped around the back side of the creature and made a wide berth around the bush.

It was here he paused, thinking. Could he kill the creature himself and haul it away before the bear even had the chance to grasp what was happening? Lucian didn't think so. And he desperately liked his limbs and life — to lose either of them wouldn't be worth the meat on a moose.

Stepping gently across the sparkling snow, Lucian took his time moving closer and closer towards the prey beast until the bush gave a violent shake. The creature was onto him, he thought. It was now or never. Dashing forward, the young Amaranthe crossed the remaining distance towards the prey and jutted his spear out in front of him into the bush. It did not make contact with the animal — which turned out to be a wild turkey — but it had served its purpose and flushed it out and towards the bear.

Things were about to happen very quickly, he thought.

i'm not sure if this counts as mature or not!! please let me know if it's too much :)

Bracket's yellowish eyes flickered between the luperci and the location of the delectable scent of prey, knees with a slight bend and ears pricked forward in anticipation. He acknowledged the young hybrid's words with a brief nod of the head, satisfied that he agreed with him. Of course he did. It made him subtly happy that despite his agreement to cooperate, the bear still held an air of dominance here. Maybe his pride wasn't that damaged after all.

After the canine's next words, things happened very suddenly. He disappeared for a few seconds behind the undergrowth, the spear Bracket was constantly conscious of brandished in his hand, and the sound of shifting ground and frantic gobbling filled the air as a turkey shot out of the bushes. Its eyes were wide with fear, and the featherless legs hurtled themselves along the ground at breakneck speed. This was Bracket's cue, launching himself forward, bounding over to the turkey with surprising agility. It swerved to the left and dodged his initial lunge forwards. He corrected his direction in the air, veering after it and kicking up dried earth and leaves. Muscles rippled under the onyx pelt of the male bear and his paws thundered one after each other, saliva building up in his mouth at the prospect of the first bite. Confident he was close enough, Bracket thrust his head forward, lips peeled back to expose his yellowing teeth, and sunk them deeply into the throat of the bird. He closed his jaws with great ferocity, ensuring to squeeze until the talons stopped thrashing around and the metallic tang of blood filled his mouth.

Then he hunched over his catch and rested his claws upon the carcass as a thin red trail dripped off his teeth. A rush of pride engulfed him. He'd caught this. It was his. And that was the exact moment where he spun around to face his speared foe, teeth still bared and a growth catching in his throat. Now was the time to scare him off.

OOC: Sorry for the wait but lol Lucian u idiot. As it currently stands, I don't think a mature marker is necessary but if you think it'll get much more gory I would mark it just in case. :)

A warbling of gobbles filled the air and Lucian followed the turkey's fleeing figure with bright, toxic eyes. The stupid animal was headed directly for the waiting bear, entirely unsuspecting of an even greater danger ahead of it. On powerful limbs, the Sapien trotted after the frightened prey and wished that he had killed it then and there right in the bushes. A turkey was a decent meal — when shared with others of his ilk, not a freaking bear. If he didn't get a portion for himself, there was sure to be nothing left but feathers and bones.

Lucian skidded to a halt in the snow, maw agape and eyes widened in awe, and watched as the bear bounded forward after the turkey. He hadn't realized how fast or agile a creature of the bear's size and stature could possibly be. His eyes followed the pair — predator and prey — and took note of how its enormous fangs glinted dully in the winter light before disappearing again beneath feathers and flesh. It shocked the young hybrid into silent wonderment.

But not for long.

As the youthful often do, Lucian thought of himself with a sense of immortality. He jogged after the beast, his spear jutting out in front of him, and approached it with his usual slithery charm. And then the bear's face turned to him, all bold-eyed and snarling, and the Sapient stopped. He pushed his sharp ears high atop his head — a show of assertiveness — and his nose broke into a hundred wrinkles. Ivory fangs peeked from between curled lips. Clicking his teeth, Lucian jerked the point of his spear forward at the bear in an attempt to scare him. "I flushed it out," he snarled. "The prey is mine, beast. Give it over and maybe I'll be generous."

ooc: No problem, there's no rush at all! And we'll see how it goes c:

The turkey tasted like how water often does when you haven't had a drink for a long time. Every nerve ending in the bear's body was ecstatic, buzzing at the first bite of fresh prey, vibrating with an indescribable satisfaction. It was a chore to tear himself away from the warm body of the bird and focus on the task at hand. Cooperating with the canine had definitely gotten him his dinner, but the prospect of sharing it was something he never had the intention of doing. He'd served his purpose, and now it was time to get rid of him. As he rose his head to acknowledge the luperci's moment toward him, the fur around Bracket's mouth was mildly damp and crimson, reminding him that this catch was his and his only. Regardless of his opponent's claims that it wasn't, there wasn't a chance that he'd part with such a delicacy.
"You may have flushed it out, but look who's teeth marks are in the damned thing. It has my name written all over it, pest."

It wasn't until the spear had swivelled around to face him that Bracket became increasingly conscious that his intimidating expression was failing. Although his teeth were bared and fur prickling, there was no sign of any running away in terror, leaving a pit of disappointment within the bear's empty stomach. The sharpened metal aimed right at him made the mammal increasingly nervous. Could he really take on a luperci, realistically? They had advanced weaponry and thumbs, as well as tooth and claw. What did he have? A large body and a scary face. The claws he held in possession weren't as sharp as they could be and, frankly, a bit underused. Bracket changed tactics.

Rising slightly from his hunched position, the bear met eye to eye with his foe, shifting his gaze from the piercing green pools that locked onto him to the point of the spear. He allowed his hackles to lower, only ever so slightly, but enough to appear convincing and vaguely peaceful. If there was anything that these arrogant canine creature should be susceptible to, it was deceit.
"Is this how you're going to treat somebody who just took down prey with you? If you want a chance at eating today I'd drop the spear, and fast. That's very rude indeed." He grumbled, with a fake air of friendliness. He tried his best to now allow bitterness and hate to seep into his words.
He allowed himself to slowly raise a paw and push down on the head of the spear, lowering the aim down from himself to the ground beneath him.
"After all, we're both hungry. Hm? There's no need to be quite so aggressive." He fixed his gaze upon the hybrid's hand, scanning for any signs of loosening grip.

OOC: I'm more than fine with Bracket snatching the turkey up and ambling off before Lucian can act, haha. Or coming up with some other scenario in which Bracket gets the whole thing. Poor guy definitely needs it more than Lu does. xD

Living in a pack that provided well for him, Lucian was not starved. After taking stock of the bear's condition, a better man might have offered to help it hunt simply out of altruism and certainly would have let the creature have the whole kill without argument. But Lucian was not this type of person. It had been his goal going into the deal to come away with the kill and, high on the adrenaline of the chase and the feeling of being unfairly treated, the Sodalis was prepared to carry out his plans.

He jabbed the spear point in the bear's direction again, still baring his teeth, and growled. "Yeah? Well, you wouldn't have anything if I hadn't flushed it out to begin with, bear!" Lucian never stopped to consider what he was doing threatening a creature easily twice his size even in its current condition. It wouldn't be until afterwards, on the way back to Sapient, that the cocky youth might entertain the idea that his actions weren't particularly bright. They would be fleeting, however, and by the time he returned home, they were sure to be replaced with pride, arrogance, and superiority for having stood up to a beast as huge and as dangerous as a bear.

As they stood, eye to eye, there seemed to be a gradual change in the bear's stature. Its hackles began to lower and its voice, when it spoke again, sounded almost friendly. Lucian narrowed his eyes. "Funny, coming from the one who started this dispute," he sneered. "Maybe bears have terrible memories, but I seem to recall being growled at when I approached you. So yeah, rude." The bear was stronger than he was and able to push his spear away from him but Lucian was uncomfortable with the point of his spear in line with the ground rather than the beast's heart and took a step back.

"Sure, you're right. So, give it here and I'll cut the thing in half and we can both me on our way."
