Clover knew relatively little about the archery stands, other than that they were meant for camouflage and important for the pack’s defenses.

She wasn’t a weapon-user and didn’t think she would have the patience to learn the bow—or anything else, for that matter, when weaponry required so much maintenance and training. Vesper seemed to disdain weaponry, too, pointing out that one could trust their own body far more than the wind and arrows—and Clover, of course, was inclined to agree with her.

But when the pack’s Regulus barked an order, Clover would heed it, if with grit teeth and a few choice words muttered under her breath that she was certain Vicira could hear. She didn’t care, though. Vesper was Aquila and would defend her, no matter what Vici did.

She wasn’t surprised to find the small golden-brown coyote heading for the stands as well, hammer and bucket in hand. “Hi, Maddox,” she greeted, and flicked her ears. “Vicira send you this way too?”

“Girl needs to get laid,” Maddox wasted no time in remarking, and the dog snickered. “You oughta seen the way she was throwin’ herself at that handsome feller, y’know, at the bonfire.” She mimed a braid coming from the side of her neck. “Been grouchy ever since.

“But… Reckon it’s better ’n makin’ chairs or muckin’ the stables, at least,”
she added, sighing as she fell into step beside Clover.

“What exactly do we need to do?” Clover asked. “I’ve never done shit like this.”

Maddox shrugged. “Eh, ain’t so complicated. Gotta make sure it’s sturdy ’nuff so no coyote’s gonna fall out of it. Cover it up with some branches. Though wolves’re dumb enough they won’t bother t’ look up.” She grinned, winked.

He was doing his part, despite having not fought in any major battles of the war so far. He had a family to care for now and while that meant that he had to do his part to protect them, he didn't want to put himself in any danger that made it possible for him not to return. He sharpened swords, made sure spears and other weapons were in working order. He fletched arrows and helped to advise when it came time for others who needed his help, both in learning and in action.

Brooding, wine stained eyes were trained on the path before him that lay claim to one of the many archery stands that he knew of.

He had helped take care of them during his time here, though they often needed work done to them and often found injury when snow this thick fell upon their roofs and ice slicked over their wooden ladders. It had not taken him long to venture toward this single archery stand. He knew the land well enough, though the scents that plagued the air near it almost made him turn around.

He had fared well enough in the scouting mission that had turned deadly when he'd gone with Clover and Oriole had shown up but he still didn't trust her with her connection to Jehan. There was no telling what the other had told her about his threads or even about the possibility of Basilio being the one who had messed up his face the day the two had actually come to physical fighting. He had not brought it up before and it wasn't going to now. He held his breath momentarily before finally inching forward, announcing his presence with a small yip before inching closer than he already was.

"I see you two both had the same idea," he said with a half-grin. "Mind if I help? Three heads are better than two," he half-offered, that smile of his short and to the point.

The women began to set up, Maddox climbing up into the structure while Clover piled boards scavenged from the sitting room. Most had been rotten, but a couple of the broken pieces could be salvaged for this, and Maddox had looked over each one. The carpenter ran deft, callused hands along the boards and branches that made up the stand, testing its weight.

Lil' creaky, the old woman sighed. Ain't fit for somma you large folks, prolly. She cleared her throat, then looked down through the slats when the small figure of Basilio advanced toward them. Noticing Clover's strained look, the cook whistled. Now him, he could sit on a leaf and it ain't gonna bend, she said to Clover, who snorted and covered her mouth. Then, aloud: Hi, Basilio. Ain't much our idea but Vicira's. 'Course you can help!

Clover helped Maddox down out of the stand, not looking at the dwarf directly. It wasn't until he'd come closer that she levelled him with a suspicious look, but she held her tongue for now despite the countless things she wanted to say to him. Maddox, having picked up on this (and witnessed plenty of drama caused by Basilio when Covenant and others stormed through the kitchen), played innocent and handed off the hammer to the short man.

Somma those boards need tore up.

With everything that could be said, the two avoided, for the most part, most of the notorious and managed to tease and pick at his height and weight as if it were the most obvious of his shortcomings. Well, actually it was. He should have been used to the quips by now from pack members who didn't understand that words could be triggers to someone like Basilio. However, he had spent most of his life hearing the same old thing and what she said could have been much worse than what it was.

He sneered slightly at Maddox before pointedly turning his gaze toward Clover who had snorted, covering her face with one of her hands.

Only then did he walk toward the both of them and the stand itself, grabbing hold of the hammer offered without even looking at it. He moved to the ragged board ladder and climbed up to observe and prod at it himself. "Be careful down there. Don't wanna accidentally hit one of you two with a flying board," he said with a somewhat mused grin once he had his back turned. It was possibly to see if Clover had been privy to the knowledge that both Jehan, Crucifix, and Cartier now had and also an actual warning. The last time he'd held a hammer was the day that he'd been fixing up part of the roof with Conrad.

It was the day he'd beaten Jehan for his nasty words and soured attitude. He could care less whether the two were dogs but sometimes, he was learning, dogs had mouths on them that needed met with a hard hand when they veered off topic or turned mouthy when one thing had gone wrong.

"Don't mean to just cut in, Maddox. I hope you weren't planning on this yourself. I'd hate to deprive you of the chance." When he finally reached the top of the archery stand, he hooked at one of the boards with the tongue of the hammer and pried the piece free of the foundation, careful to take the nail out straight, to free it from the board so that it could be reused.
