OOC: Tiny starter for you!

IC:
In this ever-changing world there seemed to be one constant: cleaning. With many canine feet making their way through the Hotel’s reception area there were always paw prints to scrub away; in the kitchens there was often food to check for spoiling. Dust settled on surfaces regardless of what was going on in the hearts and minds of the Court’s residents. There was a comfort in the fact that this one job – albeit a lowly one – would always need doing.

A rag in one hand, Abigail leaned against the concierge’s desk and thought back to a time when it had been her Father stood in the same spot. He had complained about Kalypso’s way of going about things on that day and Abigail had had no idea that the woman they decided should head up a project for new housing was her half-sister. Those were simpler days, she thought.

But simple didn’t always equal better. Things had to move forward, just as things had to be kept in order around the old Hotel.

The Archiduchessa moved to the window and began to wipe away a smear, perhaps with a little too much vigour in her movements. Her wounds had at least healed up enough for her to perform her tasks with some energy, without moving too gingerly or too hesitantly. She was whole again, in body if not in her heart.

We’re the only ones who know

He was taken aback by how much older his eldest daughter seemed suddenly. He blinkingly stared at her with a curious look that bordered on a failure to recollect properly. She seemed much older than the handful of years she was, in his head at least. Lately, and he knew it, he had forgotten some things, minor things really, but it was odd that this was something he had forgotten.

For whatever reason, that moment in time, he felt that his daughter ought to have been only near about two, rather than the nearly five years she actually had. Thoughts were blurring in his head as he watched her clean the desk where he often had his papers. Though, last time he had gone to the desk, none of the papers had looked familiar and the confusion had driven him back to his room to rest and read.

It was easier than addressing the fact he was losing his grasp on time faster than possibly imaginable.

”Cleaning, Abi? So diligent. I’ll have to tell your mother when she comes to visit next time,” he added with a chuckle, brushing past her to the desk and handling some papers. He mindlessly adjusted the stack into an even pile, then furrowed his brows at the words on it. Something about housing? That didn’t seem right. Silvano lifted the paper to his daughter. ”Do you know something about this?”

The smudge on the window faded well before Abigail stopped scrubbing at it. It was far easier, these days, to throw herself into small tasks – to take things day by day. Try as the Sadira woman did to have few expectations of those days, she knew eventually she would have to look to solidifying the future for her family and the Court.

The housing project was underway, at least, thanks mostly to Kalypso’s driven nature. In spite of everything that had happened over the Winter things had righted themselves in that regard and they could push on. Having a big project to work on would help them all – Abigail hoped that much, anyway.

Abi didn’t see her the reflection of her Father in the window. When his voice sounded she turned abruptly, sea green eyes focusing into a cool – slightly worried - expression. Silvano looked as if he’d aged more in the few weeks since Shiloh’s death than in the years Abigail had known him as a parent.

Guilt prickled at her for not spending more time with the man since everything had come out. It was still difficult for Abigail to know how to respond to the man who had once been her hero.

If she’d expected Silvano’s next words to clarify things for her, she would be sorely disappointed. Her eyes widened and hardened – at first she thought this was a sick joke.

“Tell my – what?”

The concern in her eyes deepened and she finally abandoned the window, crossing to the desk where her Father arranged – or rearranged – some papers. Abigail moved slowly, trying to piece together what was happening in her head. She didn’t notice the rag dripping spots of greyish water onto the floor.

She frowned at the sheet of paper but when she moved to take it from Silvano she was gentle.

“This – we can discuss this in a minute. Are you feeling alright today, Daddy?”

We’re the only ones who know

At first, she seemed surprised, then concerned. He mirrored it on his own face, for he was unsure why she would make such a face at him. What had he said that was so odd? It seemed a simple question and yet she seemed to react as though it were very unusual for him to be asking it. He was King and so he ought to know what was going around him, shouldn't he not? He ought to have been aware of the projects his pack undertook, for it had to have been discussed with him in the end.

"Of course I'm alright, Abigail," he said with a great deal of impatience. Silvano sighed at her as she took the paper from him and he reached out back at it. His hand did not grab it for it was not there. He stared at the space, wincing as he remembered that he had no more fingers there, but he could not for the life of him remember why exactly it was not there. It was a constant thing to be reminded, especially whenever he tried to use it and found that it was useless.

"I.. I think I'm alright, at least. Why?" he added, a little bit more hesitantly than he thought possible. His heart began to hammer without warning, as though the fear of the truth started to pulse within him and prompted a stronger beat. He could not understand why his daughter looked at him so but he was suddenly aware that there was great cause for concern.

OOC: THIS IS AWKWARD AND SAD.

IC:
There was impatience in the former King’s tone and for a few moments Abigail was reminded of years gone by. She didn’t look at Silvano now as the young woman who had lacked purpose and direction within the Court, though; there was a hard edge to her emerald eyes. For Abigail there was no forgetting what Silvano had and hadn’t done in his past.

Her ears pulled back as she fought to forgive and to fathom what was happening now.

“It’s just -” Abi began, uncertain. She ran the edge of the rag she’d been cleaning with through her fingertips as if feeling for a way forward. Abigail had been dedicated to finding a way forward since Mistral’s execution – but she hadn’t accounted for the fact that Silvano might lose his grip on time and memory. She hated the idea of that more than the idea of his past infidelity. Some part of Abigail had always expected to mend the relationship she’d had with her Father – her hero, really – and the idea that that man might eventually disappear was terrifying.

She forced a smile but she didn’t know who it was supposed to reassure.

“You know me – I’m always worrying about something.”

Abigail did her utmost to approach the Ancien without too much caution in her steps, reaching to kiss his cheek. It felt as if it wasn’t the stretch it had once been.

“Where were you headed?”

We’re the only ones who know

He was not fooled, not for a singular moment. Abigail usually had some very well founded fears and worries, and he was happy enough to listen to her concerns. That she was not talking about what the issue was, and that it concerned him, made him frown pretty hard at his eldest daughter. She came toward him, obviously trying to redirect him.

Silvano let her kiss his cheek, but did not let the frown disappear entirely. His brows did soften, though. "Abigail, what are you not telling me? And don't lie to spare my feelings; I'm sturdier than you think," he said shaking his head at her, as though it was ridiculous that she was trying to protect him. He may not have been a young man, but he was hardly an old man.

That was the thought that caught him lost in his tracks. How old exactly was he? He was having a hard time recalling exactly how many seasons and years were under his belt. Was it six? Or seven? He really did not remember. There was no way he was older than that, though, even if his joints were aching strangely in the morning, and had ached going down the stairs.

Despite all that had happened, Abigail didn’t like feeling disapproval in her Father’s gaze. Her own sea green eyes flicked away for a moment, as if she was ashamed of making such an obvious ploy to redirect the man’s attention.

Abigail had never been very good at hiding her feelings from Silvano – at least, not before all that had happened, everything that had been revealed at Mistral’s execution. As a child she had shown her less than pleasant feelings in pouting and sulking; now, as an adult, she had to concentrate to keep her lips from pushing out into a pout.

But Abigail was no longer a little girl and those things had all happened. She knew the truth of her Father’s infidelity; she knew, too, that if she still respected her sire at all then deceiving him would be doing him a disservice.

Her arms crossed as her mind warred with itself – but this older, wiser, more distant Abigail knew to keep that battle out of her eyes. Her gaze returned to the former King’s face, the hardness of his eyes – but also the lines around them. Didn’t an ageing Father deserve happiness now, even if that happiness was found in ignorance of all that had happened to them?

Perhaps a part of Abigail envied the tricks the man’s brain was evidently playing on him. Part of her didn’t want to be so keenly aware that Shiloh was gone, that everything had changed. Part of her didn’t want to hurt him by reminding him. Yet another part resented being told not to lie to spare his feelings. Wasn’t that what Silvano had done to all of them, to Shiloh, until he’d had no other choice?

“I’m studier than you think, too, Daddy.” She moved to where the papers had been set down and held them out to him. “Perhaps you should ask your other daughter- ” Her eyes flashed. “- Mara’s daughter – about these.”

Unknowingly the Archiduchessa had been squeezing the cloth in her hand so tightly that claws had pressed into her pads. She turned and fled, leaving a trail of grimy water in her wake.

We’re the only ones who know

It took her a moment, far longer than he expected her to say. He was expecting her to reveal that it was all a surprise, that she had been working on it behind his back. He would not have minded such a thing; he was not a young man, after all, and the aid was more than welcome. So, it was clearly something else, something far worse than leading behind one's back.

Finally, she spoke, and the man felt himself wilting as his daughter spoke of Mara. Mara and.. his other daughter. His throat closed as he remembered exactly what had happened, and that Kalypso was among them now, and that she was Queen, and he was not King. He made an "oh" sound as he looked to the papers on the desk, that were no longer relevant to him for he was Ancien, not King. He was not a leader, any longer. He was just a foolish old man.

Before he could apologize, Abigail fled. The awkward feelings in his gut were rippling in turmoil. Silvano could not chase after his daughter, for his joints ached and he did not want to face her anger. He put down the paper and eyed the trail of dirty water that she had left behind her. Even that was going to be too much to clean up. Instead, he stared in shame at the door, before he turned to the stairs. He painstakingly climbed them, heading to his room to wallow.
