Galilee had never visited a bar before.

Kalypso assured her that the place was worth the trip, bringing along trinkets they could trade with and entertaining her with conversation as they traveled north. Much of it was simple small talk, some gossip at Skoll’s expense, and some jokes as Lee was pried out of her shell. Near the end of their journey, Lee was boasting about the fat marten she tossed over her shoulder and asking what kind of wild critters Kaly might have hunted on her islands.

They still chatted idly walking through the city, but the mood changed when they set foot inside the place – along with the scent.

The stench of many warm bodies, a sweet-sour aroma of drink, and just a hit of vomit hit Lee like a wall along with the noise: loud talk, an off-key wind instrument, a bawdy song. Her tail wagged a little, but her ears lowered uncertainly. It was certainly a different crowd.

But someone came out of the crowd, a skinny brown wolf who greeted her with a disarming smile that put her at ease. Her eyes found his unruly curls and she reasoned he looked very familiar, but no sooner had she noted this did he greet her.

“Welcome to Biff’s! First drink is on the house! You want me to put that critter away for some cups later?”

“Oh uh sure,” Lee said, and the man grabbed the fat dead marten, tutted at its cuteness, and carried it over to the bar. With Kaly catching up, Lee leaned back toward her Queen and grimaced. “Doesn’t he look kinda like… I dunno, a skinny Pascal maybe?”

better late than dead i guess orz

Galilee was not the hardest of canines to bring out of her shell. For some reason, she had retracted a little within herself and that boisterous personality was drowning. It took cajoling but a good mood was coaxed out of her. She herself brought some pelts to trade and also a couple of baubles stored after a long time in her private stores. There were limited things left from her time in the islands, but she was hesitant to use them unless they were both dying of thirst by the end of the night.

The noise hit her with the smell, but she barely flinched. The tavern on the island had been just as bad if not worse. Sailors were always the worst of any drinking bunch, but they had been the most fun to deal with.

The thin male that served them seemed chipper, perhaps a little out of place in such a bawdy setting. Her eyes narrowed at him though, struggling to place who he was and why he looked so horribly familiar. The smell of him was lost in the stench of alcohol and bile. Blood was in the air too, but it was stale and nonthreatening.

You know, he kinda does. But maybe more like a thin Alessan. Or a mix of the two, she sad slowly, eyeing him with a critical eye as he disappeared with the marten. Come, lets grab a seat, she said, less of a suggestion as she lead them to an empty spot at the bar. The tables seemed busy with rowdy folk and Galilee looked a little out of place. Like a fish out of water.

This is a much more noisy crowd than home, hmm? she hummed toward her, her eyes sharp but glittering with amusement.

Not disagreeing, Kalypso coaxed her to a seat. Galilee watched the thin, dark wolf chat with the white wolfdog wiping out the mismatched cups behind the counter, then pulled out a wooden stool with a scrape against the floor that made her wince. She settled down on this, tall enough that her paws were pretty well planted on the floor, then glanced over at her Queen – a queen that seemed at ease in this establishment, her blue-green eyes glittering.

“Huh?” the tall girl replied dumbly over the din, then grinned self-consciously as she registered what Kalypso had asked. “Yeah! It doesn’t seem so bad though!” She could convince herself of that.

The bartender finally made his way over to them, asking them for their orders, and when Lee could only shrug – inexperienced with alcohol, she didn’t know what she wanted – he left. While she waited for him to find drinks to pour, she looked out at the crowd. Wolves played some game with knucklebone dice on a table, growling and howling rambunctiously, while a pair of dogs engaged in a very intense, quiet conversation pressed near one of the walls. The thin wolf from before had his arm around the shoulders of a sniffling woman at the other end of the bar. Others of all species were scattered throughout, some nursing their drinks, others shouting and showing off, one playing a high song on a reedy flute.

A cup made of horn was shoved into her hand. Galilee buried her muzzle in it to sniff, then lapped some. Whatever it was foamy and a little sweet, but she could taste that it was watered down.

“Why’d you wanna bring me here?” Lee asked, glancing at Kaly and grinning her sharp grin to mask any insecurities she had. She knew she would feel better after a drink or two.

The woman paid for a drink, which the man scooted off to find. In the interim, both of the women, one youthful and naive, the other far more world wary. Kalypso saw the game of dice, feeling the temptation to join them at it. No, she had nothing to gain and a lot to lose. It was better to come later when she was not escorting Galilee. Skoll was not likely to thank her if she got his daughter caught in a tavern brawl.

The drinks came, a horn for Galilee, something more bowl-like Kalypso. It was sweet, thick, and heady. It was not wine, it was not ale, but something more akin to a fruity mead? It was hard to place but she gave the man an appreciative waggle of the brows as she took another sip of it. It was definitely heavy and unwatered, which she greatly appreciated. However, with Galilee nearby, she was far more careful of how much she drank. She sat it down with more control than she wished to exhibit, but an example had to be set.

Because, some of you all deserve to have a little fun and that fun is found outside the Court. She gave an audible snort as her fingers tapped the rim of her wooden bowl. Between your father, your age-mates, and the rest of them all, you'd likely never have thought to experience this, she added with a wave of her hand. One of the men at the dicing corner stood up and yelled something at another who grinned broadly. Honestly, would you have thought to come here if I didn't suggest it? There was no real judgement in her voice, mostly because she was not sure if Galilee would have or not.

The flute, high-pitched, tweeted on. Somewhere, someone produced something like a tambourine, with little metal cymbals clanging and rattling a jingling accompaniment.
