<p>Eden had been outside of Salsola before, though even though this was the case, he tended not to go too far from home. He didn't really worry too much about Outsiders, having the times he had come across them showing no signs of threat to him. So long as he continued to hold himself, and follow along with the alias he had made for himself, then there was nothing for him to worry about. He had even managed to have one of them come back home with him. He had made sure that he would not let the Boss down with the one he was sponsoring.</p><p>
Even so, the need to push further north from Amherst was out of a desire to see the plants that might be growing there. He could always gather around the wastes, but there had to be more in other outside lands. He had gone out with a small basket, a book and writing utensil resting along inside it. He had been keeping some notes on the herbs that were kept in Salsola's stocks, as well as anything new he came across. It helped him to have a reference for what he could use in certain situations, just in case something uncommon came up that he needed to take care of.</p><p>
Besides, he loved the idea of learning more. He would be the first to admit that he always had so much more to learn, and while Grievous was there to provide a lot of it for him, even he didn't have all the answers.</p><p>
Coming to a more open area towards a mountain he didn't really recognize, Eden found himself lowering down to the ground. Taking his book, he began to flip through some of the pages, trying to point out some of the plants he did recognize, thinking over how much they would have had back home. A couple had been carefully picked, placed into the basket he had with him.</p>

<p>His hands were less tied as of late, though at first he loathed the relegation of sibling duties to others. His older brother spoke kindly of the attention he’s been given by his current sitter, and his protective younger sibling was forced to relent. More so as the unexpected desire to provide for the young pack in earnest more frequently turned to a driving force behind his actions. Was he merely paying back a series of debts? Paying back those that have accommodated him? Or was it something else?</p>

<p>He questioned it internally, the process made all the easier as he headed unattended beyond the realm of New Caledonia to forage for more herbs. Months earlier he did so with the Moonwraith, and the fruit of this endeavor lasted them for a time. Now that nature was resurging with the coming of long-awaited Spring, it was a fine time to try their luck once again. The more he took to his tasks, the more areas he found in which their supplies were lacking.</p>

<p>His journey took him South in reliable Secui, making stops now and again when the dexterity of an Optime’s hands was necessary. The extra training in changing frequently, hours apart, was an added exercise to the already useful foray. The satchel he’d been offered already contained a few stalks of medicinal plants he’d dug up, root and all, to plant closer to home, or else use the plant in its entirety for salve or brew.</p>

<p>To encounter a stranger was a possibility the Songthorn mostly dismissed as acceptable. He believed himself careful enough not to be ambushed, and remained ever vigilant where it came to hearing or smell. So as soon as he caught trace of a Luperci in the vicinity, he stopped and as always took the effort to draw in the scent, discern, decipher. A person. A stranger. Alone. Not too far. No blood on the air. No danger, perhaps. Bellad looked around. He could not yet see the stranger which, of course, did not mean the same could be said for them. For all he knew, he was being watched.</p>

<p>In Secui again, the black wolf paused, then let loose a tentative howl. Bellad knew well the art of conveying many things through howling. Thus his call was at once declaration, request and greeting. He declared his presence, his lack of hostility, and a request to approach. The volume was modulated carefully, to be heard at a certain distance, yet without spreading alert too far. His was a beautiful voice - he carried “Song” in his name for a reason. Now with the howl uttered to the air, he paused for an answer. Knowing if none followed he would rather leave the owner of the scent be, lest he give an advantage to one lying in an ambush.</p>

<p>Eden had been pleased with the way things were playing out in his life, as many things had gotten much better. The future was looking bright, and he was pleased to be able to get out of his home. Spring brought so much more to the land than the white of snow, even if he had fonder memories of his family together during that season. His gaze moved over the plants he had already gathered in the basket. Many of them would be taken back to the clinic, as he would much rather restock from the past season over his own personal garden. That could always come at another time.</p><p>
Ears shot up to the sound of the call being rung out. It wasn't that loud, making him aware that it was coming from someone close to him. He was not afraid, having come across others outside of Salsola before, but it was a different sort of greeting than what he was used to. Head turned to the sound of the noise, finding that it was someone in their secui form, one that the young male rarely ever saw someone in.</p><p>
Pink gaze looked over the stranger, his dark fur standing out against the bright greens of the open space and plants around them. More striking were the scars along his shoulder and rear. Upon giving them a closer look, they actually looked more like burns rather than scars like one would get from combat. He wondered what could have happened to have caused something like that. The younger one found himself rubbing his hands together, wondering if that's what his hands would have looked like if they had not healed as nicely as they had when he reached into the flames.</p><p>
Pushing back those memories, he offered the stranger a smile, still absent-mindedly rubbing his hands together, <b>"Hello. I wasn't expecting anyone else to be out here. I am not in your way am I?"</b></p>

<p>With the stranger coming into view, their positions now somewhat less uneven in that both have been revealed, the healer observed for a bit. A greeting was uttered - this time in speech rather than howl and the dark Secui didn't immediately respond in any way. And then, change rippled through the quadruped body, a transformation, though, to be fair, one common to their kind, taking place before the eyes of the other. Soon Bellad stood on his two feet – another part of their encounter equalized. The burned wolf stood tall and wore little in the ways of clothing, but at least seemed no stranger to some more functional accessories. He had several medicine pouches, hanging in a mismatched trio around his neck and carried with him a bag that smelled of soil and flora.</p>

<p><b>“No, you are not.”</b></p>

<p>He finally spoke, showing the gift of speech was not beyond him either. It was in this two-legged form that he stepped closer, though pausing at a respectable distance from the unknown. His expression was calmly inquisitive. His exposure at large to the most prominent packs of these lands was a recent affair, so he did not yet know how to tell which one or the other hailed from. He knew from his previous journey with the pack that accepted him, that somewhere further to the South lay Casa di Cavalieri. He knew, also, that there existed another, one that he had not encountered even during the tourney he attended.</p>

<p><b>“I am Bellad Songthorn. I come only to seek that which has sprouted with the coming of Spring…”</b> His speech was strangely archaic, spoken somewhat solemnly, almost with an air of ritual to it. It seemed a peculiar blend of near-feral manner and some unknown traditions. Though if nothing else, it seemed earnest, and the healer’s fiery-orange eyes betrayed no trace of insincerity. <b>“You are in the form of agile hands. Yet you are not armed. You do not smell of game – you are not on a hunt…”</b> So he mused, then, in conclusion, offered. <b>“What brings you here?”</b></p>

<p>Both of them had fallen to silence. It seemed the dark, secui man had been a bit confused, or surprised by not having gotten some kind of howl in return. Eden just had not seen a need for this since they were already so close to one another, at least by that they could see one another. Howling was better for further distances right? Regardless, his pink gaze lingered on the other male, watching as he took his time shifting to his own other form, matching the one that the younger one was already in.</p><p>
The Apprentice offered a smile in turn, glad to hear that he had not been in anyone's way.</p><p>
Eden's eyebrow rose slightly to the way that this male, Bellad, spoke to him. He had mentioned that he had only come out here looking for what had sprouted in the spring, so he must have come out here to gather some herbs and plants as well. Well, there was no reason why the two of them shouldn't be able to share in the surplus of ones that were growing wild in the area. It's not like they were in a territory that belonged solely to someone.</p><p>
He had made sure to point out a couple of observations as well, ones that seemed to have confused him as to what a young male like him could have been doing out here. Bringing his soft smile back, <b>"I am doing much the same as you. my home is a bit further south, so I like coming up north to gather plants that are not common in the area. I've been gathering some to plant back home and take notes on the ones I don't know,"</b> the small book in his hand being held up to show.</p><p>
He had then realized something that he had glossed over, moving one hand along the back of his head, <b>"Oh, sorry. My name is Haven."</b></p>

<p>His understanding of the stranger’s origin remained vague even with the direction indicated. He was only recently taught the correct names, and he chose not to guess. It was fine that at least the two each had a name with which to address the other. And, for now at least, Bellad still carried his name before that of the pack, helpful as he’s been to the Realm.</p>

<p><b>“Haven…”</b> He repeated, as if testing out the word. It was not unfamiliar, and rolled easily off his tongue that’s had to recently learn new titles and occasionally syllables. The name was brief and lacked the trappings of family, but whether out of courtesy or acceptance, Bellad did not question it, letting this person be Haven. It was worth noting, also, that when shown the journal, the burn-marked luperci reacted with genuine interest. Of course the brief demonstration was barely enough to let him read it, if even he could. More so he seemed to recognize the object’s general nature. Something nearly akin to a sudden though careful respect sparked in his amber eyes.</p>

<p>In a past increasingly distant, only a few of his kin carried such objects. From one were drawn the names, his and his brother’s. He heard the way they called it. An encyclopedia, they said, with faded illustrations that portrayed the images of plants with staggering accuracy. An artifact. Gone with the fire of course, as was most that he knew. The book and all that could read it, leaving only the stories behind. And the names, those already given. That this man was creating a journal, let alone one supposedly filled with knowledge of plants, intrigued the wolf healer to say the least.</p>

<p><b>“If it is so… then perhaps we can aid one another.”</b> His phrase was tentative, as if testing each word, or perhaps navigate the exchange in a way that would not make his new acquaintance rethink the auspiciousness of their encounter. <b>“If we may discuss your findings, then, perhaps I would find something that I could add. Your knowledge and mine. If you share with me, Haven, I shall gladly respond in kind.”</b></p>

<p>While he spoke he maintained eye-contact with the other male. Towards the end of his phrase, his hand slowly shifted towards his own bare chest, as though he was solemnly uttering an oath of some kind.</p>

The male had repeated his false name, though one that he liked to hear. Both of his names had gone hand in hand with one another, part of the reason why he had chosen it. He best she would approve if she even agreed with Salsola's tradition on such a thing. He missed the way she would speak to him, having been keeping her distance since his collection of nightmares. He wanted her to come back.

Pink gaze seemed to lighten when the darker male had taken an interest in his book. Eden had taken to keeping notes for himself so that he could reference back to it, allow others in Salsola to borrow it if need be, and for situations like this one. Outsiders might not have been trusted by everyone, but so long as he would be able to get some more information, then this would all be worth it.

Bellad had made a bit of a proposition. They could help one another. A large smile grew over the young man's muzzle, almost bounding up to his feet, "Yes, that would be wonderful. Here, let me show you what I have gathered so far." Still being wary of the Outsider male, Eden took a few steps closer before lowering himself down to the ground. He opened the book to the first page, slowly beginning to flip through it. Most of the page layouts were outlined in the same fashion: the name of the herb, information regarding its use and key features, a drawing of the whole plant, and a dried bit of the herb attached to the page.

He paused every now and then, letting his finger rest on the page, "You're welcome to flip through it too if you want. Feel free to stop if you see one that you don't recognize." Seemed better to start out this way, and then he could get the information on new plants from Bellad afterwards. Then when he was done, he could do a search of the area for anything new before returning home. If anything, he would have something new to show to his mentor in his own notes.

A Reading Rainbow~ [+330]
The black wolf wouldn’t dare turn down the stranger named Haven once he so gleefully offered to go along with his suggestion. The tall figure lowered to the ground in front of the book, making it seem as though he regarded it with a hint of wonder if not outright veneration. Bright orange eyes darted across the pages but they only barely followed the lines of text.

The symbols – he did not know how to read them. But he felt faint scents wafting from the pages for reasons he couldn’t comprehend. This book was no different from a medicine bag that’s carried many herbs. And at first he wasn’t sure how. The drawings were more familiar to him than the signs. But why were there so many scents at once? As Haven flipped through his medicine book, it became more apparent.

“That!”

While he began with an air of composure, seemingly committed to being reserved and presenting himself as distant, something in the book made him raise his voice and look at it with outright surprise. He was pointing, without touching, mercifully, at one of the dried bits of herb at the pages. Surely the bit of clover he was pointing at was not unfamiliar to him. Indeed an attempt to explain what the plant was would cause Bellad to shake his head.

“Yes-yes, I know, a clover. It may at times be of use when one burns with fever. Yet, you kept it for this book. This way of storing them in the pages. How?”

So it appeared that the healer’s bewilderment started not at the qualities of the plant, but instead at the method by which the Salsolan herbalist preserved it. Eyes lifted form the page stared intently at him now, the thrill of this unexpected discovery apparently making the stranger throw some of his caution, and perhaps some of his manners, to the wind. If only till the moment he could remember the position he was in.

Eden hadn't paid too much attention on the male, letting his attention be more on his notes than anything else. He had glanced up every now and then to make sure that he wasn't turning the pages too quickly. He had seen the orange gaze of the other male moving over the words, seeming a bit confused, but the images seemed to help. Was he not able to read that well? Maybe something else that he could offer since he was already lending his own personal notes on herbs. Outsiders might not have been able to be trusted by their own customs, but he couldn't help himself.

And when Bellad finally said something, his ears shot up at the volume of his voice.

The young male stopped on the page he had come to, Clover. He couldn't help but smile at the name, as it had been the same one that he gave to his feline companion back home. Still, his gaze had found their way back to the male once he spoke again. He seemed amazed at the fact that he had dried one of the herbs and had it resting in his notes. Did others not do that? Maybe it was just not everyone needed the extra reminder.

He found his fingers tracing over the dried plant, carefully, "My mentor has showed me how to dry a number of herbs for storage. I don't think I know of anyone else that does this, but I find that keeping at least one sample among my notes not only helps remind me of what it looks like, but smells like too. Helps me with gathering or when I need to refer to my own notes. This one I am not using for much else." There were plenty of other herbs gathered back home that was for that purpose.

He paused for a moment, eyes seeming to light up again, "I can show you how to dry them if you want. As for attaching them to the pages, that is much easier. Just any adhesive material works. It's the other part of the process that is a bit trickier."
