[AW] Seashells by the Lake Shore

OOC: AW for 1! Notch is finding little shells along Moosehead Lake. Spring Forth April 12: washout | WC: 281

IC:
With spring rains and snowmelt, Notch was always on the lookout for any trails that fell victim to a washout. Thankfully the trails that he checked so far had seemed okay at the moment, and he hoped they stayed that way. He wasn't sure if they would be able to fix anything if it happened; they would probably have to create new trails if it was on that was used often.

After spending part of the day walking the trails, he decided to do something more fun, which was to go find mussels and shells along the lakeshore. They tasted okay, but they were small, so not exactly filling. He was more interested in their shells anyway because the insides were often shiny. He thought that they might look neat if he could somehow attach them to clothes as an adornment, or maybe have one made into jewelry by someone. He was finding a lot of broken shell bits along the shore, but every now and then he would find an intact shell. He didn't find any where the mussel was still inside of it, but that was fine. There were also some neat pebbles, but he had no idea how he would attach them to anything, so he didn't bother picking them up.

One particular area seemed to have a lot of shells and shell bits; he thought maybe it was due to water movement in the lake or something washing them up here, but how they got here wasn't really interesting to him. He crouched down, setting his bag down so that he could sift through wet sand and shells to find the good bits.

Morris wasn't really surprised that his misbehaving seagull wanted her fill of whatever shelled creatures had washed to shore. No, he was more surprised to see that the sort resided near the lake, having always believed that they would only be near salty waters. He looked over some of the broken ones thoughtfully as Guzzler moved about the shore in the fashion of her ilk. Some of the insides were shiny, and he knew that his gull would likely want to keep a few. Honestly, you'd think that they shined like lucida with the way the seagull reacted to such things.

Grunting at the thought, he still pocketed a few pieces, thinking that maybe Asher could use them for the jewelry he tended to fashion. At a loud cry from his gull companion, he looked up to find another canine also searching the shores, and also saw the find the other had come upon. Unfortunately Guzzler also spotted the amount of shells and the coy dog knew that all she likely was thinking of was food. "Oi, behave!" He yelled at the seagull, though he doubted she would listen. With a huff and hurried steps he moved to grab the bird, intending on taking her to a different part physically if he needed to.

Guzzler saw his approach and flapped her wings before rushing in and taking one of the shelled prizes. With her taken shelled feast in her beak she flew off and landed a distance away before working on prying the mussel open. Morris just sent the gull a disappointed look before shaking his head. He then turned his gaze to the other canine "Sorry 'bout her, I hope ya didn' need tha'" there was no taking the prize away from Guzzler after all, especially since he caught the sound of a distinctive cracking sound from the area the gull had flown to. "Coul' likely grab wha's left o tha shell if tha' were yer aim?"

Morris doubted this canine just wanted shells though, seeing as they were near the more intact looking items on the shore. Still, he felt bad enough about the gull's actions to offer, having nothing on him to replace the food within with as an extra show of apology.

OOC: AW for 1! Notch is finding little shells along Moosehead Lake. Spring Forth April 13: pule | WC: 262

IC:
Huh, there was a mussel that actually seemed to be intact, although it didn't smell great. Well, they all smelled kind of iffy, but he didn't think he would want to eat this one in particular. But maybe the shell halves would be nice and shiny? In the end it didn't matter because it was snatched from him by a bird. He let out a surprised sound that was more of a squawk than a pule as the gull took off in a flurry of flapping. He could only stare with a blank look before turning his attention to the canine that accompanied her.

"That's alright," Notch said with a shrug. Based on the cracking sounds, the shell halves were goners at this point anyway. "Your gull is clearly enjoying her 'catch.'" He laughed and looked back over at her. She was much quicker than he would think she was. Notch hadn't seen many gulls like that during his travels, although they did seem to spend time around lakes. He had also seen ones with giant beaks that could somehow hold a fish in them.

"There's lots more of the shells anyway," he gestured to the ones he was picking over. "She just managed to get the one that was still whole. It smelled kinda off, though. Hopefully it doesn't make her sick." Could birds even get sick? If they did, would that? Notch wasn't sure. He just knew that the smell wasn't even something that made him want to roll on it.

Morris relaxed a little when the other canine didn't seem that bothered with Guzzler's snatch. At the mention of the smell, Morris gave the gull a look as well "I woul' hope she didn' wanta eat somethin' bad...but then again, she often does questionable things." He shook his head and focused on the other canine again "Guess all I can do is hope she don' get sick aye?" He wasn't about to risk taking the prize away from the seagull after all, that beak of hers was sharper than it seemed. Morris then looked towards the ground and scanned the small area around and did indeed find more shells.

Well, at least that was good. "They are rathah pretty" he bent down and picked up a piece then moved it so it caught the light. "Still, I nevah really saw da poin' o grabbin tha like for fun." The coy dog knew other's did gather shells just for the way they looked. He could remember a whole collection of shells in the home he stayed in as a pup. Even back then he had only been mildly curious about the purpose of doing such a thing, besides the obvious side effect of making a space looking a bit prettier. Now, if you put the shells to use, then he understood a bit better. Shrugging he stowed the shell he had grabbed into his pocket "Then again I have a whole collection o shiny bits" he moved his head to indicate the gull nearby "Thanks ta tha' trouble makah."

Morris smiled a little, then realized he actually felt comfortable talking to this other canine. That didn't happen very often. "I'm Morris by tha by" he offered and then looked back at Guzzler when the bird gave another cry of her kind. As he watched she moved back towards them, seeming to keep a wary eye on the canine she was unfamiliar with. Morris knew better and huffed before looking away from the wayward gull. "Justa warn ya, migh' wanta keep any shiny bits o yer own close or hidden round her. She has a habit of snatchin' all sorts o stuff off o unsespectin' canines."

OOC: Spring Forth April 25: akrasia | WC: 256

IC:
Maybe gulls could eat different things and not get sick from them. Either way, she seemed to have enjoyed it, or maybe she just wanted to crunch the shell. Notch understood that. Sometimes he just wanted to dig or run around like crazy. Thankfully, Notch rarely found himself in a state of akrasia, so his activities didn't include swiping things from much larger predators. Being able to fly was an advantage, though.

"I'm Notch," he said with a smile, always happy to get to know new, or at least new to him, pack mates. He wasn't sure how long Morris had actually been in the pack. Sometimes it was difficult to tell if he was seeing someone because Charmingtown was open to loners, or if they were a new pack mate. The fact that Morris was out here, though, said new pack mate to Notch.

"Maybe that means she likes you?" Notch said, half in jest. His cat sometimes brought little gifts to him, often in the form of dead mice or birds. He appreciated the sentiment even if they weren't much of a meal. He took Morris's warning, though, and quickly tucked the shells he had picked up into his bag where the gull hopefully wouldn't be able to snatch them, unless she took the whole bag.

"So how long have you been part of the pack?" Notch asked while picking through a couple more shell bits until he found a complete one. He tucked that away quickly, too.

Morris nodded as the other canine gave the name of Notch over. Then he blinked and smiled a little at the quip concerning his small collection of rather useless baubles. "Aye, perhaps" it made some sense he supposed. Either that or the gull just did it, thinking of it as part of her 'nest'. Whatever the case, Morris didn't have the heart to toss them out, though he had traded some of the bits before to those who could use them. Asher had used some as well for his jewelry too. His musings on the gulls habits were broken as Notch asked him how long he had been there for.

"Hm, a few months?" He hadn't really been keeping track, though he could remember at least three full moons since arriving. Shaking his head he shrugged "I tend ta live by tha day. Made time on tha sea go by a bit fastah." He moved, and looked thoughtful "Perhaps it's a habit I shoul' break, now that I'm on land." Moving glanced at Guzzler as the gull started to move back towards them, seemingly finished with her prize. Ignoring the gull for now he focused on Notch again.
