Luperci learning songs/reading music
#1
So I was wondering, what type of songs and music can luperci learn or use. Because I doubt they could find any music notes of more modern songs, so they'd be limited to songs made in older days, or would they have to make them themselves?

Ooh, interesting! I suppose Luperci would pass things on orally, so they might have their own folk songs or ballads based on their own history... songs about the humans too, maybe! Wolves howl to communicate, so they could convey a lot with their voices. Dogs who grew up with humans and then became Luperci might have songs they pass down to later generations, although it would probably corrupt the melody and lyrics over so many generations. Since books survived, there could feasibly be sheet music, although Luperci would have to figure out how to read it. Humans died out in 1988, so that's as recent as their songs could get. ;)

I can tell you right off the bat that sheet music and music as we know it would be non-applicable to our characters.

The only electronic means of hearing music that our characters would have would probably be a record player that has not been damaged as batteries and most electrical objects would be toast after 25 years of decay and exposer to weather!

Further more there is a very limited number of music surviving from the Classical and Baroque period of music. As a Music student I know that any instrumental music people want needs to be ordered in 9 times out of 10. Vocal music is a little more mass produced but regardless there is only about 4 or 5 music stores in the city I live in (which is one of the biggest in Canada) that would contain such music. From this information it is safe to say that any music pre-1900's would be non-existent within souls. Plus there is an EXTREMELY miniscule chance of a Luperci finding a book to teach them how to read music, so sheet music would be irrelevant.

In all likely hood Music in the Souls verse would be approximately equal to that of pre-1600's music in our history. That is to say, mostly vocal and percussive works. The SA has allowed a certain amount of give on the realism of what instruments could be used, thus the reason I have included up to the Renaissance. We have Luperci who play various string instruments, the odd working piano, flutes of various kinds and many percussive instruments. Thus it is likely that Souls music would be a very improvised mix of primitive voice and percussive music and more modern lyrical vocal works with string accompaniment.

As far as the transfer of music among Luperci it is entirely possibly that due to the recent surge of characters who can read and write, that Souls notation on music could mimic the Renaissance style of music notation. That is to say circles going up and down to represent pitch (no staff, no rhythmic notation ect.) with lyrics as seen here: http://www.pdreditions.com/images/La_Feste2.jpg

Thanks, just wanted to know because two of my characters I want to have some skill in music, Thorn (Vocals and guitar) and Copper, (Violin or flute). And if I have threads involving them playing, I'd like to know, both in my head and in the thread, what kind of music they can play, so I can create links to music and such for other characters to hear too, etc.

But thanks again! Really helps out, if anyone can find some links to some 1600's music or good guitar music that might work in a thread, please let me know :)

Any Acoustic Guitar piece would be acceptable for Souls as far as I am aware so a lot of modern pieces could be applied to souls! I was just using 1600's as a point of reference for instrumental music as far as COMPLEXITY is concerned and instrument availability. Anything you think you could sing your character could sing!

As far as flute and violin go I would stick to strictly TONAL works (meaning no fancy modern Jazz sounding music) and fairly simply/repetitive pieces and you should be fine.

EDIT:
For example I would stick to more songs like THIS (2 mins in): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W1zaRGafxZI

And less songs that would require a large amount of skill in bending pitches such as this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ce2xatH4lw

Melissa's mentioned a lot of useful things already, but I just wanted to chime in with a 'be careful' with how skillful a character becomes with an instrument in a short time span. It takes humans years upon years to master an instrument, and Luperci don't have much of a jumpstart in this department, especially considering that many instruments must be scavenged and are probably in questionable condition. Some relevant Tumblr questions are here for your reading convenience, too. :)

To build on that skill information if you have music in your school systems you should try and match your characters skill level for the first year or two to that of a (in my case) Grade 8 (13 year old) trying to play a band instruments. Basic songs consisting of basic rhythms.

After three or four years of mediocre work on playing an instrument you have more leniency as to how difficult the music is your Luperci produces.

As far as learning goes I know the modern ways, as I am on grade 8 in drums, so I know how it's taught to some extent. And as far as my characters learning, copper learnt violin from old pack in London but never brought the instrument with him, so would feel good to get back to it, and thorn will hopefully be taught guitar by brandy and will sing just to past the time when alone, which will evedently imProve the skill :)

Thanks for info and links guys :D

Great discusion! I wanted to hop in and ask another related question that I thought of while reading this. Would it be possible for luperci to make their own instruments? Something like a drum would be pretty easy to make but I don't know much about the mechanics of making a string/wind instrument :P

Hi...I know this is really late but I have a question.
I was thinking of my character, Avinalora singing and I was thinking, what if she sings songs that she learned, but I could use modern songs that don't make a lot of modern references. I'm a big MCR, FOB, P!ATD, and TOP fan and I know some songs that don't have that many modern references such as "My Songs Know What You Did In The Dark, Famous Last Words, Let's Kill Tonight, ect. Avinalora won't make references towards the artists and just sing it.
Or this is just a bad idea *Skitters away*

Simple instruments could absolutely be made. Wind instruments are a little harder, especially since canine mouths don't work the same as humans.

As far as modern songs, remember that humanity was all but destroyed in 1988 -- those bands and their music wouldn't exist! ;D

Gonna rule a "no" on including lyrical content of post-1988 songs in posts.

It's fine to be a fan and just use song titles/lyrics as topic titles though -- that's quite a popular way of getting them out of your system/including them in some way without breaking realism. :3
it was me. i broke it.
