[AW] Maybe Friend or Maybe Foe
#1
A bird picked through some of the fallen leaves that spread along the underside of the trees. It pecked swiftly at the insects that crawled beneath the leaves. The tiny feathered hunter was about to become the hunted. The bird was so busy with filling its beak that it didn’t even realize that it was being watched. It didn’t even know what hit it yet still managed to cry out in suprise. In one hasty motion a massive russet wolf pounced on his unsuspecting victim.

Vidar didn’t even bother plucking the feathers off his prey as he chewed bones, beak and all. Perhaps that wasn’t such a good choice after all as he gagged a couple of times before coughing up a single ebony quill. Although the bird wasn’t much of a meal for a starving wolf, it served its purpose for the time being. The stomach couldn’t complain with the minimal snack and the bird only eased the numbing ache of emptiness.

The young wolf had only recently joined the pack called New Dawn. He had yet to really meet too many of his new pack mates, but he wasn’t in a hurry to mingle. Perhaps it was for the best. The need to be with others was strong, but his will to keep some solitude still matched that needs strength. The male licked his lips before dropping his head down to sniff around.

One plus so far with being in the pack was the prey rich territory. Or maybe it was just the recent flames that pushed the critters closer, regardless Vidar didn’t really care. Quickly his ears pricked at the sound of other wolves near; he wondered how long it would take for him to get use to the idea of being in a pack again. Vidar sighed and continued on. He knew that the shriek of the fowl would have warned any near animals of his dangerous presents.

OOC — Welcome to New Dawn! Sorry Kiara's a bit mopey.

Kiara sat with her family, or most of them at least. Lucia was off somewhere, hunting or perhaps just trying to cope with the loss of her "father." Her other four pups remained by her side, their grief almost palatable as she gave them what little comfort she could offer. It was at times like these that Kiara wished she could shift in the bipedal form the luperci possessed. She wanted to hug her babies, to wrap her arms around them and protect them from all the pain. But the Omega was forever bound to her four legged form and her babies were no longer little. Marrok and Altair had grown large than she, Altair dwarfed her. Saki and Lucia were both over a year old and Marrok, Altair, and Leela had reached their seventh month of life. Yet all of them had learned what it was like to loose a father.

Kiara herself couldn't quite process the death. She hadn't been able to bring herself to properly think about it. She just felt... numb. Tharin had been a large part of her life for nearly two years. He had taken over raising Lucia and Saki in place of their biological father. He had snuck out of his pack on so many occasions to watch after her in the neutral territories, and had helped get her into the pack when Lucia was old enough to travel. Tharin had been the one to find poor Saki when she was orphaned and it had been his decision to bring the young female into their family. Kiara had followed Tharin in his rise in rank until he became the Beta of the pack, and she had supported him when he fell to subordinate. Tharin was her mate, her companion through life and the father of her pups. He had been her friend and closest confidant. She couldn't quite figure out he could just be gone.

The rumblings of stomachs brought Kiara out of her daze and she gently licked the tops of her pups heads. I'll go get us some food. Saki simply nodded and the younger three mumbled something incoherent together before bidding their mother farewell. She didn't travel far though, and soon the terrified shriek of a fowl broke through the silence. Kiara froze, alabaster ears flicking as her sapphire gaze passed over the forest. Fall was in full swing and the trees were awash with color. The early turners had already dropped their leaves and stood like naked sentinels in the forest.

Between the tress and thinning underbrush, Kiara spotted a copper form that she didn't recognize. The Omega had heard rumors of a new member, but she bothered to seek the new member out. With a quick sigh, Kiara moved towards the unfamiliar male and offered a him a sad smile. Hello. I'm Kiara Amarok, the Omega. Your the new wolf right?

Lucia Amarok
bright star

Lucia wasn't quite so far away as Kiara thought. Only nearby she saw her mother's white form retreating from the communal den and barreled in on her brothers and sisters. She had brought them food, a haunch of a deer leg. Saki was questioned as to Kiara's destination and then left as quickly as she had arrived. She couldn't stand to see the pain in their eyes, the same as hers and know she could do nothing about it, nothing at all. She ran after Kiara hoping to catch up and the two could walk together maybe. Since Tharin's death she felt as though she had grown a lot closer to her mother, if that was even possible. Now she was her mother's shadow, trying to be wherever she was constantly when she was not off running to exercise the violent energy that she felt ans escape the nightmares. Now she was sleek and lithe and streamlined, not a hint of puppy fat or childhood left within her. She was an adult now, fully grown and already proving her worth to the pack that had seen her grown.

Up head her mother had stopped and for a second she didn't realise why but then an unfamiliar scent came to her and she slowed in her lope, trotting forwards with her ears forwards in interest at the stranger. She stopped besides her mother and gave her a quick lick to the cheek. Then she turned her Danube eyes onto the copper male, who was he?

"Lucia Amarok."

The slight rustle of the underbrush alerted Vidar. He swiftly concluded that an even closer canine was approaching. His ears automatically swerved towards where the noise was coming from. There was some movement just slightly left of him. The scent was ever stronger of New Dawn and something else hung in the air. Vidar felt the delicate leaves crisp and crunch under his paws as he pivoted to face the forthcoming visitor.

A snowy white coated wolf appeared from the shrubs. Besides her bright, vibrant fur, her cobalt eyes caught Vidar’s initial attention. However it was that heaviness in the air and dull look in her gaze that suggested to him that this she-wolf was a gloomy figure; her sadden smile just confirmed it.

Hello I’m Kiara Amarok, the Omega. You’re the new wolf right?

The newcomer didn’t offer any smile or much of any sign of friendliness. He simply answered. “Yeah, the name’s Vidar.” He paused as he studied her a moment longer but couldn’t keep from half joking and asking the partly serious question, “Why such a long face?”

A dainty figure also appeared right as he asked which took his attention away from the she-wolf named Kiara Amarok. This was the first time he had been with more than one wolf since his exile, a thought that made him cringe. At first his stare was reeking of suspicion but this she-wolf was young, possibly slightly younger than him and seemed to be no threat. He shook most of the feeling off as he glanced back and forth between the duo.

OOC — OOC

The chocolate and cream male offered no smile or sign of welcome when she approached. Instead he answered with a terse greeting that merely consisted of his name. Yet he seemed to lighten a bit when he asked about her grim appearance. Kiara simply shook her head, not wishing to burden the newcomer with her own sorrows. Just one of those days.

White ears flicked backwards as the sound of paws caught her attention. The arctic mother looked back, quickly catching a glance of her daughter's own ivory form. A slight smile touched her lips and she visibly relaxed as the yearling came to her side. Lucia was her first born, her eldest daughter who had become closer to her because of the tragedy. They had pulled apart for a few months, most likely due to Lucia's natural rebellious phase. Yet now the young female had become her mother's shadow, a development that Kiara was more than happy to find. If anything good was to come out of Tharin's death, it would be the fact that it brought her family closer.

Normally, the Omega would have reacted to Vidar's apprehension and suspicion with submission to try and calm him. But Lucia was by her side and the male directed his hostile gaze towards her daughter. Kiara's ears and tail immediately flew upright and she stepped protectively out and in front of her daughter. Although she showed no aggression, her sapphire eyes blazed with all the intensity of a mother's wrath. My daughter, she added as Lucia offered her name to Vidar. Lucia, this is Vidar.

The brawny young canine didn’t push the Omega to share any information. Though he may be a member now, it probably wasn’t any of his business. And if he had pried information, she would probably force him to feel obligated to share Intel that he didn’t want to be known. He was about to comment on something else when he coughed on a feather again. He shifted his body from mild discomfort. While staring conspicuously at the mother and daughter pair something changed in the Omega mother. Her demeanor seemed to change rapidly from extreme sorrow to possessiveness over Lucia.

Vidar again moved from uneasiness, this time not from his last meal but rather from the subtle manner which the she-wolf asserted herself and her daughter. To Vidar it was as if she no longer wanted him anywhere near her daughter, at least for the moment. Regardless, he took it personal. Her seemingly distrust caused him to have some misgivings about the Omega. But he wasn’t going to give her the enjoyment of making him back off. His eyes remained the same shade of coldness but a new amusement gleamed beneath. His daring gaze tore away from Kiara to Lucia.

The appealing little she-wolf actually seemed to be about his age. “Lucia,” Vidar smiled slightly as he repeated her name. “A pleasure to meet you,” he finished with a tactical tone that had a creepy edge to it. He purposefully directed all of his attention at the younger she-wolf, ignoring the Omega since that seemed to be something that would aggravate her more. Vidar did no wrong. She had no right to judge him. He really didn’t intend on starting things with anyone for fear of his past being brought up, however he wasn’t going to let anyone just condemn him without good cause.

Lucia Amarok

Lucia pushed up in next to Kiara, running her side along her mothers, she was kind of shocked at the coldness that emanated from the stranger and felt herself just a little on edge about him. Her curiosity was piqued however and her eyes were interested as she took in his appearance. It wasn't so often that new wolves joined. She was annoyed but also touched by her mother's protective behavior. She was an adult now, Lucia could look after herself even against strange males. And if he tried anything funny? Well New Dawn's wrath would rain upon him like it had done for Amy. But she didn't think that that was why he was here.

She pushed her head underneath Kiara's neck in the guise of a wolf hug to the male, her ears flicking back for a second but gave Kiara a subtle nudge with her nose, she was not a child to be stood over and kept between legs. She looked back at Vidar with a slightly apologetic look and wagged her tail in a friendly manner despite his attempts to bait Kiara. She didn't think that was a wise choice though really,

"It's nice to meet you Vidar." She was trying to ignore the silent battle between them and attempting to keep civility to their meet and greet, "Where have you come from? If you don't mind me asking." She was honestly curious and tilted her head to the side in askance.

The display of dominance was inappropriate for her rank as the Omega and she was sure that if either Zalen or Raeka found out she would be punished. But this was her daughter, her first born child, her family. Kiara had already lost one puppy to a stranger and other's to weakness and disease. She was not about to loose her daughter to some newcomer that thought he could push his weight around. It didn't matter to the unshifted female that she was the size of a coyote, or that Vida could probably have bested her in any physical conflict. Kiara did would not stand for his icy and suspicious gaze to be directed at her daughter.

To make matters worse, his demeanor shifted once again from suspicion to flirtation. Kiara stood aghast, frozen from near shock even as Lucia rubbed beneath her chin in a loving manner. The alabaster mother could feel her daughter's subtle cue, telling Kiara to back off. Her baby was saying that she didn't need protection. But that was wrong! Lucia would always need her mother's protection.

The arctic female had to fight the urge to bear her teeth and run the suitor off. Lucia was too young for such attention. Her eyes bore holes into the male, clearly saying telling him to back off. "You know, I think Vidar is busy. Perhaps we can talk to him another time."

Vidar’s actions were simply an act to irritate the omega. He really didn’t feel any attraction to the daughter but that wasn’t to say she wasn’t a lovely she-wolf; he just wasn’t truly paying much attention to the younger maiden, past her mother’s fury. He was pleased that he was able to push the she-wolf’s buttons. When the wolfess named Lucia spoke, Vidar answered, “Somewhere very far from here.” His gaze never left the Omega. He continued to study her. The fact that she didn’t have any right to judge him fled for a moment when her glare reminded him of the saying, if looks could kill. He had no intention of picking a fight with anyone just giving the hag a taste of her own venom.

The young wolf backed off a step but remained in the same posture. He blinked his gaze toward Lucia and told her, “Yes please do come again, just don’t bring your mother next time.” He threw in a wink before taking another safe step back and tossing a smirk toward Kiara. Vidar’s coldness came forth easier than he could have ever imagined. The hurt he felt from his birth pack only left him ultra weary of others and suspicious of their intentions. He wasn’t prepared to let anyone hurt him again. It was easier to avoid all possible harm by damage bridges before they could fully form.

Lucia Amarok
bright star

This conversation was quickly turning sour and Lucia could sense it was already lost. Looking between the newcomer and the Omega Lucia was at a loss as what to do. She knew her mother would be punished if it was discovered how she had acted and if she turned to blows against this male. Her ruff bristled and she again looked back at Vidar with a cocked head. She saw his coldness but also something else within it too, more than what he was projecting although she didn't know what.

Then the interaction came to an abrupt and kind of ugly end with Vidar turning away form the pair of them and Kiara trying to herd her away. With one last almost desperate look at Vidar she turned to follow Kiara, a frown upon her face. When the male was out of view Lucia turned her danube eyes on her mother,

"Mother...?" Her voice was soft, she didn't want to further anger her birth-giver.

OCC: Uh...Vidar was such a stupid and smug mutt xP Someone woke up on the wrong side of the den....

As the pair began to leave the cocky young new comer snorted and left the pair to talk amongst themselves. He really didn’t care what they thought of him and why should he? His parents had raised him to believe that no one else’s opinions mattered but his own judgment. Sure such perspectives gave a lot of power to a narrow minded soul but surely he didn’t have to love his pack mates. Of course he wanted to but how could he accept them when they were so quick to criticize him? And yet who was he kidding? Of course deep down he cared how they saw him and what they saw in him, why else would he be so defensive and sharp with his tongue? He wasn’t a bad wolf, why couldn’t others see that? The former loner was sincerely good at heart but could only he see that or was he blind to something that everyone else saw in him? No, he did not care what they thought of him – that is so long as they didn’t think of him as a worthless, no good, skunk-catching, yellow toothed, dull-brained, exiled, murdering flea bag, like it seemed that his birth pack would think.

OOC — End?

It wasn't that Kiara hated the male or had any personal grudge against him. In fact, if they had met alone things might have turned out differently. The Omega was normally a very pleasant and benign female who strived to get along with everyone. She didn't like causing trouble or strife within our outside of the pack. The scars she bore on her stomach, neck, and shoulders were proof of that. The reason why Kiara had been marked so badly was because she had refused to fight back. That choice had not only caused her a lot of physical pain, but it was the reason why she had lost her son as well.

Kiara was the very definition of an overprotective mother. Vidar had decided to not only approach her daughter with suspicion and disrespect, but had actually gone so far as to flirt with Lucia. The arctic mother couldn't figure out which crime was worse. All of Kiara's aggression towards Vidar stemmed from his attention to her daughter. No one would be allowed to hurt any of Kiara's puppies and no male was good enough to be Lucia's mate. Besides, Lucia was still too young to have a mate.

Even as Vidar spoke to Lucia, his gaze never left Kiara. Her own sapphire eyes bored holes into him as he spoke and Kiara could feel her temper rise higher. She wanted to chase him off, to snap at him and drive him away from her daughter. It was almost a relief when the conversation came to a close, although Kiara let loose a growl when he told Lucia to see him again without Kiara. Lucia was a puppy!

Lucia's soft and fearful voice broke through her mother's anger. Kiara's gaze turned towards her daughter and her heart sank as she saw how upset Lucia had become. It's alright. I'm just trying to protect you. Your still too young for that kind of attention. With that, Kiara walked off with a look that said the conversation was done.
