CoA caribou race thread! | Briar Patch

POSTED: Sun Jul 08, 2018 11:47 am

It was dark, and late, but he was allowed to lay out on the grasses of Briar Patch and look up at the stars. And that was just what he did. On his back, with the grass and the ground pressing gently into his spine like a cushion, Percival's nutmeg eyes were upturned to the inky sky. They flicked here and there, looking from one winking star to the next, but they never fell. They were terribly fascinating to the young boy, terribly mysterious.

Of course, he was not without supervision. Milos was nearby, finishing his chores in Aster's Fields, but it was the cat, Meerclar, who watched the child. She lay in the grasses nearby with her front paws tucked into her chest and her eyes half-closed. Her ears swiveled now and again to sounds – the nearby buzzing of a june bug; the wind slipping between blades of tall grass; the hoot of a distant owl – but she was otherwise still.

"But how come they're up there?" the child asked. He stretched out his front legs and rolled over onto his side toward the queen. "Meerclar, do you know?"

The cat opened her eyes and considered the youth silently, blinking slowly at him. The tip of her grey tail curled and unfurled again slowly. "No. Do not," she purred. "Just there."

Meerclar did not care for the things she did not know or understand and, as far as she knew, neither did any other cat. What good were questions about stars if the answers would not help them survive? None, as far as she was concerned.

But for Percival, it did matter.

Rolling his body onto his back once more, the child gazed upwards. "Maybe the Goddess put them up there," he thought softly, looking from star to twinkling star.

ooc - oh hey there ;)

Oscar

When Oscar spent his mornings or afternoons in Asters field amongst the horses, it was all too easy for time to slip through his fingers. When the Morelli had begun working Cracker, his young spitfire of a filly, the sun had just peaked in the sky during the middle of the day. But now as he untacked the copper filly, the sky was streaked with brilliant splashes of pinks and purple. As Cracker had gotten quite sweaty from the whole ordeal, the wiry haired man took his time brushing out her coat and bedding her down, ensuring that she had plenty of freshwater available before releasing her into the fields with the other mares and her mother.

Oscar wasn’t the last one to depart from Aster’s fields this evening, for his uncle remained behind to finish up some routine tasks. After a quick farewell for Milos, Oscar began making his way towards the cabin he called home, smelling of horses and hay and unmentionables. By now the stars winked overhead, their unearthly light peppering the night sky.

Not paying attention to where he put his feet, Oscar nearly tripped over a grey tabby feline who was once neatly perched over the fields. ”Oi! Sorry ‘bout tha’, Meer!” Oscar exclaimed, immediately recognizing the feline as one of Milos’ own. While Meerclar was no stranger to the Morelli’s antics, she had little tolerance for Luperci in general.

Luckily, the Guppy she watched did not suffer the same fate.

”Percy!” Oscar crowed in greeting, looking down at his younger cousin with a beaming grin ”Almost didun’ see ya’ ‘ere!” For the moment, Oscar’s shaggy head blocked the stars Percival had been admiring moments prior to the abrupt interruption.

”Anyways, whatchya’ doin’ out ‘ere? Seems a bit late fer a youngun’!” Oscar released another chuckle, his hands on his hips.

The unmistakable sounds of footfalls approaching had the cat swiveling her ears. She gave the approaching figure a cursory glance, only to make sure it was not someone who posed a threat to the youth she watched, and then continued to ignore the shaggy Morelli. Meerclar was a proud and stubborn queen; she often felt that it was the responsibility of others to see her, not for her to make way for them. So when the bumbling brute's foot trapped her tail against the ground, the cat let out an ear-piercing yowl and whipped around indignantly at Oscar, hissing at him for good measure.

She did not accept his apology and she did not hide her displeasure when the big, hairy oaf didn't move on. Still growling deep in her throat, the cat slipped as far away from Oscar as she could while still being near enough to watch her charge, never taking her glowing eyes off of the Morelli.

Surprised by the sounds erupting from the cat's mouth, Percival rolled onto his side and sat up, watching his cousin and the cat with wide eyes. "Ohhh, you made her real mad!" the youth chided, but he smiled despite the disagreement between his chaperone and his cousin. His tail thumped softly against the grass. He was glad that Oscar was here. Meerclar was a cat of few words, but he thought that his cousin would be different.

Puffing out his chest, Percival beamed up at Oscar. "Papa said I could!" he said, as though getting permission from a parent to do anything was something everyone ought to be proud of. "He said I could look at the stars. I'll let you lay with me and then you can look at them, too!" he chirped, wagging his tail faster. "See? Like this." Rolling onto his back again, his front paws touching his chest, Percival looked up but saw only Oscar's shaggy head. He frowned. "You're in the way, Oscar."

oov - Oscar lives to annoy others ;>

Oscar

Had the feline not reacted, Oscar would have never known that he had trapped the queen’s tail under his heel. Although she didn’t swipe at his ankles - as she very well may have done - the ear splitting yowl was enough to end the Morelli reeling. Rumbling growls faded as the cat slinked off - although she didn’t stray too far from her charge.

”Ach!” Oscar exclaimed, feeling the stare of Meerclar’s glowing eyes on his back as he turned to face his cousin ”I’m pro’ably gonna pay fer it later.” Despite the feline’s foreboding glare, the Morelli have a nonchalant shrug and plopped himself down besides his cousin. ”Yer da’ let ya go out a’ night, n’ all yer doin’ es starin’ at th’ sky?” Oscar asked incredulously as his younger cousin wagged his tail happily.

”Alrigh’, alright! Man, yer pushy.” Oscar chuckled at Percy’s complaint. Shrugging, the Magnate stretched himself flat on his back, staring up at the sky with his hands folded on his stomach. It couldn’t hurt to humor the kid, after all. Even if this was pretty boring.

The night sky was pretty and all, but it wasn’t long before Oscar found himself fidgeting. Looking at his cousin from the corner of his eye, the Morelli gave a sneaky poke to his ribs. Not too hard, of course, but enough to nudge the kid. Oscar repeated, a mischievous grin growing on his face.

Percival did nothing to quell Oscar's concerns. "Yeah, she's gonna get you back," he warned pragmatically with a grave nod of his wiry head. The youth turned to glance at the cat, lowering his ears sympathetically at his cousin when he turned his nutmeg eyes back on the elder Krokaran. "I bet she's gonna poop in your bed." He grinned, humor tickling his words with his mention of "poop." Precocious as the child could be, he was still a little boy and bathroom humor was endlessly funny.

As Oscar plopped himself down and commented on his being allowed to stay up at night, the smile disappeared from Percival's lips and he tilted his head quizzically. A crease formed between his brows. "That's all Papa said I could do," he said, feeling a little confused. What else would he be doing, if not exactly was his father said he should be doing? Giving his head a little shake, Percival rolled onto his back and resumed his stargazing.

Oscar, too, settled himself in the grass next to him and looked upwards, though Percival wasn't about to let his cousin's comment go without argument. "Am not!" he countered, turning his head to frown at the Magnate. With two sisters and two older brothers, Percival was well-versed in the art of childhood debates.

Before long, the twinkling stars beckoned Percy to look upwards again and he fell silent. The poke against his ribs sent a ticklish thrill pulsing through his body and Percival yipped. "Oscar! No, tickling." After giving his cousin a long and measured look, the Guppy returned his gaze upwards again. But his cousin did precisely the opposite. When the second poke to his ribs sent another ticklish wave climbing up his spine, Percival rolled over, wrinkling his little, wiry nose, and yapped a complaining, "Oscarrrrr!"

With her tail swishing restlessly in the grass, Meerclar watched as Percy stretched out his forelimbs and flopped one oversized paw toward his cousin's body. Whatever spell the stars had had on him was effectively broken by Oscar's mischievous antics. Playtime was on.

Oscar

”Boy, dun’ go givin’ Meer any bright ideas!” Oscar complained as he plopped himself besides his cousin. At the mention of poop, the Morelli’s eyes widened in horror. ”Nooooooo,” Oscar moaned dramatically, rolling back and forth in the grass ”That woul’ be th’ worst!” The Magnate stole another glance at the angry hairball that was the queen. She was most certainly plotting his untimely demise, whether it was by cat turds or something else unfortunate.

Oscar chuckled at his cousin’s goody-two-shoes remark. ”Jus’ ‘cause yer Da’ says so doesn’ mean ya gotta do it!” Oscar grinned mischieviously, his teeth glinting white in the moonlight. Nonetheless, like a responsible big cousin, Oscar laid down besides Percy on the grass. It couldn’t hurt to humor the kid by playing his stargazing game.

Which didn’t last long.

”Am too!” Oscar goaded, turning on his side. Percival’s gaze returned to the night sky, which was about when the Morelli got bored. ”Whach’ya gonna do about it?” Oscar retaliated in a childlike manner, grinning wickedly as Percival complained. Two pokes was all it took.

Oscar gave a yap as Percival flopped onto all fours, slamming a big ol’ puppy paw in Oscar’s direction. By now, the Moreli had seated himself upright. Eyes glittering mischievously, Oscar feinted to Percival’s right with a loud bark before taking off in the other direction, goading his cousin to give chase.

A bubbling of giggles erupted from the child's mouth as Oscar complained and moaned, his over-dramatic theatrics well received by the young boy. When the shaggy Magnate turned and met Meerclar's glowing eyes, the queen offered him a soft hiss back and flicked her tail in agitation. Then, with her toes tucked against her chest, the cat stared at Oscar as he lay next to her charge in the grass, her eyes never leaving the brindle Morelli's massive shape.

"Yeah-huh!" Percival countered immediately, his little brows furrowed. But there was doubt in his heart. "'Cause otherwise you get into trouble!" This made him feel a little better. Percy didn't like getting into trouble, so he did what his parents told him to and stayed in their good graces. Although, that didn't mean that he always wanted to do what they told him to, but he was a good boy and listened... for the most part.

Except for tonight. Oscar's goading and prodding was just what the child needed to disobey. His cousin's bark was like a call to arms and, scrambling to his oversized paws, the Guppy ran after the shaggy shape of the Magnate. "I'm gonna get you, Oscar!" he called confidently after the elder Krokaran, yapping all the while. The stars were forgotten, Meerclar was forgotten, even his father's instructions were forgotten. All that mattered was catching Oscar.

But all that barking and yapping drew Milos attention and, loping from Aster's Fields, the Captain watched the chase from the fringes of Briar Patch with an amused smile and sunny eyes.

Oscar

Oscar could feel the queen’s severe stare boring into him even as he turned his back on her to properly face his cousin. While the feline’s hiss did not go unnoticed, Oscar choose to ignore it. He would pay for it later, for sure. But he would deal with that when the time came.

Oscar raised a furry eyebrow at Percival’s retaliation. Oh, it hurt his heart, to see that his little cousin was such a goody two shoes. As his older cousin, the Morelli saw it as his sacred duty to ensure that Percival did not further evolve into a brown noser. ”Well, kid,” Oscar replied, a wicked smile growing on his face ”You stick ‘round long ‘nough, n’ ye’ll see tha’ some thin’s are worth gettin’ n’ trouble fer.” Some kids needed a wild streak painted in them, that much was for certain.

”That’s more like it!” As soon as Oscar’s sharp bark hit the air, it was game on. Oscar took off, hooting wildly as his cousin scrambled on all four paws. ”Oh yeah?!” Oscar called back at Percy’s challenge. From the corner of his eye, he could see that the golden blur of his cousin was gradually drawing closer to his heels. ”I’d like ter see ya try!” But Oscar knew very well that Percival held two advantages over him: four paws, and an unlimited supply of energy.

The Morelli slowed down to a loping gait, not wanting to make it look like that he was slowing down on purpose. As two paws pushed on his back, Oscar gave a holler before he was brought down to the ground once more. ”Well, look’it that!” The Morelli chuckled, giving a playful growl as he rolled around in the grass.

For now, his uncle’s watchful gaze went unnoticed.

Percival chewed on his thoughts. Some things were worth getting into trouble for? "They are?" he mused, the little gears in his head turning as he tried to think of what could possibly be worth getting in trouble over. When he came up with nothing, the youth turned this question on his cousin. "Like what, Oscar?" There was genuine, innocent curiosity in his tone.

Already, Oscar Morelli had planted a seed of mischief in the young, impressionable brain of Percival Parhelion.

Perhaps that was why, in addition to youthful restlessness and Oscar's goading, Percy did break from his straight and narrow ways and launched himself into the challenge of the chase. His paws dug into the soft, dewy grasses and pushed him forward after the shaggy shape of his cousin. He thought of Ball and how it had taught him to keep his eye on the prize.

This time, rather than a tattered old ball, the prize was Oscar, and Percy had his sights narrowed fiercely on him.

He was fast, but not really all that fast, not with his oversized paws and ungainly limbs. But as the distance closed between them and Oscar's body grew closer and closer, none of that was on his mind. Instead, the Guppy felt incredibly fast and strong – faster and stronger than all of his brothers and sisters; maybe even than all of Krokar!

And that was when he leapt up and knocked Oscar to the soft grass, amidst hoots and hollers from his shaggy cousin. Percival circled the Brawler for a short time, nosing and nibbling excitedly at him, his tail wagging erratically behind him. "Told ya, told ya!" he cheered. "I'm lots faster than you! Huh, Oscar?" He grinned toothily down at his cousin.

"What's all th' ruckus 'bout, boys?" Milos asked, stepping from the sidelines toward them. "Reckon ya could'a woke up all'a Fiskebyn'n beyond!" But the chuckle that tumbled from his lips suggested there was no ire or disappointment to be taken from his words.

OOC: We could probably wrap this up soon. c:
