Optime | Hee Haw Orchard; morning | NPC: Einarr (+436)

The fog was thick that morning, encasing one in a cold, damp feeling upon stepping outside and traversing the territory. Dew collected thickly across many surfaces, more so along those that were metal. If that morning was anything like the previous weeks though, it wouldn’t be long before the low-lying clouds finally moved on. In the meantime though, the spooky feeling added for another level of fun for an adventurous child.

Their mother had mentioned Reuben needing help with collecting the many apples that had become ripe in the orchard, and, of course, at the mention of food, Einarr had perked up. The bear had been a gluttonous thing ever since the weather had started to change, something that was apparently attributed to his species in general. According to their mother, he would likely pass the majority of the winter months by sleeping. The children, of course, had issue with this, as it would have been their first winter, and none of them wanted to miss it. Attempts to stop the inevitable by lessening his food intake had only proven to make Einarr only hungry and cranky though.

So, it was to the orchard Skadi and Einarr had gone. Sindri had elected to stay behind, eager to finish his attempt at tanning a rabbit hide on his own. The two siblings had promised to bring him—and the others—some apples when they returned.

Had they not been familiar with the territory, the sounds of livestock calling out in the fog might have been chilling. The pair made their way into the overgrown orchard with noses sniffing wildly at the faint, sweet smell of fruits that had been partially eaten and then left to rot. On one of Skadi’s arms was a wicker basket they had borrowed from storage to collect their bounty.

“Think Reuben is around somewhere?” The Eklund asked casually as she walked up to one of the fruit-bearing trees. She had never picked apples before, only knowing that if it was soft within her grasp, it was rotting.

Einarr continued to sniff as he shambled about. “I don’t know. I can’t smell a fresh scent.” He stopped when he came next to her, head craning upwards towards the bright, red fruit that still hung from the tree.

She turned to her brother, poking him in the nose with a finger. “Do you think you can figure out which are the good ones with that thing then?” Of the three siblings, Einarr had the best nose, it seemed.

The bear let out a wet snort. “I dunno, maybe?”

Being the Risegard meant many things, and much more would be expected of Zuri within the coming days. Up until this point, Saga had been doing much of everything on her own. Granted there were those like herself, Sedona, and others in the Wolverthorne and Elkenfrey houses that could take charge of things, and work towards progressing this kingdom.

But now she was a member of the leader's council. Her decisions could help sway many things, and with things seeming to be on edge as they were, it would be a good opportunity for the two women to come together and look towards the future of the Vale in much more light than had been previously put onto it.

Callisto had grown too. No longer was she the pup that was a constant thorn in her mental side, even though part of that was still lingering in her brain. Every time the pale woman turned her gaze on the young girl, the only thing she could see was the demon that would forever hang over her. Her mother had ruined everything, and having her around was just another constant reminder of the damage that had been done.

There was no redemption, and she would have been better off dead.

Still, Zuri played along, being in the role of her mother as she followed the pup behind. Even at two months, she was outgrowing the size of her own children when they were that age. There was a clear sign of some kind of dog breed in this girl, but it was not too clear on which one. Callisto bounded ahead without a care, though paused to see that the Risegard was following along with her.

Soon, she stopped in the fog, upright ear moving to something. Crimson gaze turned on the pup, "Stop."

"What? Why?"

Eyes narrowed to the pup as she turned in the path, following the sound. She came to find one of Ragna's children along with a younger bear. Callisto soon padded up behind her, spotting the pair as well, "Who are they?"

Zuri said nothing and approached the pair, "Skadi."

“Tch. Maybe we should just pick a few and go from there,” she sighed. She turned and held her chin contemplatively as she sized up the tree that they stood before. No amount of staring made any one apple look “better” than the other though. They all had a reddish tint to them, though, it varied from fruit to fruit. Not one was completely red.

“Maybe I could eat one and see—”

Skadi scoffed, cutting him off as she gave him a side-eyed look. “Of course you’d suggest that.”

Einarr’s nose wrinkled at her. “It’s more than what you’re doing.”

Their bickering stopped short at the sound of approaching footfalls and the call of Skadi’s name. Both of them turned towards the source, finding the albino Hawkesond, Zuri, approaching them. At her heels padded one of the younger children of the Vale, Callisto. She was an awkward looking thing, with her oversized paws, patchwork pelt, and other obviously doggish features. She looked nothing like her parents, but, why that was, Skadi was not privy to.

“Risegard Zuri,” Skadi greeted in return, giving her a respectful dip of her snout. Though Zuri was not the head of the Wolverthorne House, she was still a member of the council nonetheless. Her mother respected the woman too, so, there was that as well.

Beside her, Einarr rose to his feet and also offered a bow of his head to the pretty, albino woman. “Good morning, Risegard, Callisto.”

“We were trying to help Ruben by picking apples,” Skadi went on to explain, “You…wouldn’t happen to know how to pick the good ones, would you?”

“It sounded easy until we got here,” Einarr quickly added.

Callisto couldn't help but wear a look of disappointment upon her face when her mother had turned her attention towards the one she had called out along with the bear that seemed to be with her. She huffed, but trailed along at Zuri's heels to catch up with her as she came to greet them. Her eyes went a bit wide, watching the way the other two had addressed her mother and the bowing of their heads. She really was important wasn't she?

It was also a bit strange that Einarr was the only one to address her, but she brushed off the weird feeling as best as she could, leaving nothing but a smile in place of all her worries, "Hello!"

The pale woman turned her gaze down on the pup before turning her attention to Skadi, the young one explaining that the pair were out here gathering apples for Ruben. Winter would be coming soon, and word had been getting around about the male's plans for he fruits. Without giving a response, her head turned up towards the trees lining the Orchard.

The pup tilted her head, looking up at the tall branches with amazement, "They're so tall."

Zuri gave a small flick of her ear before she thought for a moment, "It would be easier to gather them from the branches. Being as high as they are, we could see if the Vale has some kind of ladder to reach them." She paused for a moment, her gaze falling on Einarr, "Or, perhaps you can help. Being a bear, I presume it would not be hard to climb up the tree. Otherwise, you could give Skadi a boost so that she could reach the higher branches and the fruit."

They were two viable options, but it was up to the others what one they might decide to do. Callisto had taken to the the base of the tree, sniffing around it before looking up at the apples. There was no way she could reach them.

Yikes! I dropped the ball on this one! Sorry about that! @___@

From the sound of it, the apples that still remained attached to the trees were the ones to go after. It made sense to the young Wolverthorne. More often than not, the ones that she and Einarr had sniffed at and found on the ground thus far looked rotten or had already been claimed by insects or other hungry vermin. Skadi glanced at the burdened boughs above, considering the suggestion that the Risegard had given them. The barn wasn’t too far, and there’d surely be a ladder there with all of the work required with the communal animals.

Einarr’s round ears pricked as the albino woman’s ruby gaze turned onto him. “I can climb!” He agreed eagerly, the edges of his lips pulling up in a sort of smile. He looked down at his hooked claws then and flexed them. It would be the first time his innate ability to do so would have been of great use. Previously, he’d only ever done it out of fun or to get the upper hand in a game with his siblings.

“Just don’t climb so high that you can’t get down,” Skadi warned in a teasing grin. Einarr stuck his tongue out at her as he lumbered over to the base of one of the trees. He brought one of his forepaws up and scraped at the bark with his claws in a testing manner. He then stood on his back paws and reached up, pushing on the trunk of the apple tree. It didn’t budge. It was a promising sign that it could bear his weight.

As he prepared to shimmy up the tree, Skadi set her glacier eyes on Callisto before looking back to Zuri. “Do you think the barn will have a basket?” It was something she had realized when the Risegard had arrived; they had no way to collect or carry the apples to wherever Reuben would have wanted them.

The bear grunted as he attached all four limbs to the tree trunk and dug his claws in. In a shuffling motion, he quickly began to ascend the tree to the first thick branch that was laden with a cluster of apples. “Should I just shake them out of the tree?” He called down to Zuri. “Or do I have to get them down a different way?”

Admittedly, Zuri hadn't considered the idea that the bear could climb up into the tree to get the apples, but it would only prove to make the entire thing a little harder on the animal's part. A bear didn't quite have the advancement that luperci did when it came to their hands, and so the bear would not be able to gather them with his own hands. Even so, he seemed eager enough to help, so there was sure to be a way they would be able to work around this set back.

Crimson gaze followed the movement of the bear as he made his way up into the tree. They shifted only when Skadi had made her comment, then soon returned back on the bear. Callisto watched in awe as the animal didn't seem to have any trouble with his ascent, "You can do it!"

Once again, Zuri's attention was brought back to the silver woman. She questioned if there would be a basket at the barn they would be able to use. It was then when the Risegard had come to the same decision that Skadi had. Even with a means of getting the apples down, none of them had anything they could effectively use to gather them. As a sort of last minute option, she might be able to carry them in her dress, but would prefer to avoid this if this was the case. She gave a nod, "Yes, there should be one there we can use. If you don't mind getting it, I can keep track of things here."

Upright ear twitched to the sound of the bear's voice, having come to a branch that contained a fair amount of apples. He was questioning how he was supposed to get them down. Her eyes narrowed on the fruit for a moment before she called back up to Einarr, "You could, but I don't feel like trying to dodge apples. Instead, see if you can fit your paw over the top of the apple and push them down. The stems shouldn't be too hard to break off. Doing it more slowly and one at a time will help me try to catch them as they come down."

Despite the earth beneath those on the ground would be sure to take on the force of any falling apples, it would at least give her something to do while waiting for a basket so they could properly gather them.

We could probably end this soon or OOCly if you wanted since it’s an older thread? :O

With Zuri’s confirmation, Skadi nodded, accepting her new task. She made one last glance at her brother before she took off towards the barn. Having heavily traversed Winterwynd and its surrounding areas since her puphood, it mattered not that the fog still lingered heavily in the area. When she arrived at the structure, it her a bit to find a suitable container to collect the apples in. She found a few pales, but, they would hold only a meager amount. The wicker basket that she remembered seeing before was nowhere to be found either. Eventually though, Skadi managed to find a bushel basket that wasn’t in use, and, with it in hand, she raced back to the orchard.

Meanwhile, Einarr was busy trying to secure some apples. Seeing the logic in the Risegard’s suggestion, he grunted his acknowledgment to her. His paws weren’t meant for grasping, not like the Luperci’s were. So, it made traversing outward from the tree’s center more challenging. He placed a tentative paw down on the branch first, pushing down hard to test the sturdiness of it. It felt solid to him, so, he placed more of his weight on it.

Carefully, he inched his way out towards the closest cluster of apples. He positioned himself in a way that would give him the most balance, and then reached out. His first swipe was a miss, causing him to wobble a little. His second attempt was more successful. Hooked claws snagged the top of the apple, and, with a bit of force, Einarr managed to snap the fruit from the stem. His dark eyes followed as gravity did the rest.

“Look out, below!” He called down warningly, not wanting to accidentally hit Callisto or Zuri on the head. One down. Turning his eyes upwards, he sought out his next victim from the cluster.

By the time Skadi had returned, Einarr had managed to pull down almost two-dozen apples of varying ripeness and quality. “What will Rueben use these for?” The Eklund daughter asked Zuri as she deposited the basket next to the growing pile. She knelt down, shuffling the apples into the collection bin.

Up above, Einarr began to move onto the next branch that had a cluster of apples close enough for him to loosen.

We can go ahead and wrap this up if you want.

Zuri's gaze followed Skadi as she nodded, soon making her way from the tree to gather the item that had been asked of her to retrieve. It didn't take long for the silver woman to disappear, leaving her to turn her attention back to the bear, which had made significant progress in making his way up the tree. As he seemed to be testing the waters of the branch, she began to see the flaw in her plan.

It was going to be harder for him to keep a finer balance, especially the higher and higher he got into the tree. With any luck, they wouldn't need to gather too much, and if it was absolutely necessary, then she or Skadi could be the one to follow the bear in the tree to help gather the rest. Arms crossed, gaze focused on the bear's movements. Einarr seemed to be doing well enough on his own, letting loose a few apples, his confidence growing with each one that fell by his paws.

The Risegard stepped to the side as the apples began to come tumbling down. Callisto blinked, yipping as one nearly missed her. It didn't take her long to return to her mother's side, "Be careful." The pup gave a nod, waiting for a break from the falling fruit before trotting forward again.

Not at a shifting age, the dane pup had managed to get her teeth around what was left of the stem, making a small pile of a couple apples by the time Skadi returned with the basket. Her tail wagged behind her, taking the apples she had gathered to place them in the basket.

To the question, the pale woman gave a shrug of her shoulders, "I can't really say for sure. I don't really follow his work. I probably should keep better tabs on that. I'm sure whatever he makes with them will be beneficial to us in some way." She paused, looking over the gathered supplies as she turned her attention back up to Einarr, "Not too many more. Drop enough for us to fill up the basket and then you can come down."

Thanks for the thread<333

Skadi wagged her tail a little as Callisto made her way over to help with the collection process. It would have been hard with just using one’s teeth to collect the delectable fruit with. With hands, Skadi needn’t worry about accidentally puncturing the apple’s skin and thereby starting the rotting process. Even as a young child, the pup seemed to realize the importance of this too as she ferried the apples one by one by their stems. Good for her.

She looked up to the tree where her brother was once the apples already on the ground had been gathered into the bushel basket. He looked to be waiting, not wanting to drop any more of the hard fruits down while the others milled about below. It was only once all eyes were turned upward on him again did he resume his work. Each time he pushed down on a branch, he paused to watch below to ensure nobody was hurt or taken by surprise.

As he pulled the apples down from above, Skadi picked up what bounced off of the ground. She collected every other one, letting Callisto gather some too so the younger girl could feel like she was helping. “I hope he makes something good with them,” Skadi commented distractedly. Apples were delicious on their own, but, she was sure Rueben could take it to the next level with whatever jam or otherwise he created from them.

“Alright!” Einarr called down in acknowledgment to the Risegard’s command.

It didn’t take long to drop enough to fill the basket, and the bear shimmied his way back down to the ground. With the bushel full and heavy, it took a bit of hefting on Skadi’s part to lift it, but, they eventually got it moved, and with a quick call for Rueben, they transported the basket to wherever he desired it.
