fairy lines with frozen steam

It was by chance Posey found the little bauble, a leather bracelet with a pretty blue-dyed bone bead, while traipsing through Winterwynd. Now, she was certain that it belonged to somebody, but she couldn’t quite remember anyone who made lovely jewelery in the pack - her memory was a little spotty, especially when it got so cold, like the gears were frozen. But if she paraded around the town with it, surely she’d find someone who could say, “Oh, that belongs to so-and-so,” and it would be reunited with its owner.

The leather delicately pinched between her teeth, she trotted around with her muzzle in the air.

Snow had fallen beautifully in the town, complementing its name, and icicles hung from old lampposts or along the edges of roofs - and why, Posey sometimes thought you could play a tune on those icicles, each a pretty bell-like pitch. It was a whimsical and dreamy idea that made her smile - and unfortunately distracted her from where she was going, her head craned to watch the glittering spikes.

“Didn’t see ya there!” Posey apologized to the shrub that she bumped into, then blinked as she realized she’d dropped the bracelet in the deep snow. “Fiddlesticks,” she cursed solemnly, then began to root around beneath the poking needles of the evergreen, frost clinging to her nostrils as she snuffled loudly. In her shuffling, she disturbed more snow, digging herself - and the bracelet - a deeper hole.

The sensation of being watched crept in, and Posey lifted her head to find a pair of beady eyes and a black nose floating inches from her. She blinked again, then hooted a laugh. “Oh you’re Pipaluk’s lil weasel, ain’tcha?”

The ermine blinked back at her, then darted under her muzzle and between her paws. Her head followed as she rearranged her limbs to watch it, witnessing the little white mustilid dip its head into the snow and come up with a small shake, spraying frost and revealing the bracelet in its mouth.

“Clever fella!” Posey exclaimed. “Thank ya kindly— Hey! Where d’ya think yer goin’ with that, little beastie!”

The ermine dashed off across the crust of the snow, absconding with its prize.

Phoenix was just beginning to realize just how ill-prepared for winter he really was. He never had to worry about chilly weather back in Ariozona, or at the very least not to this degree; not even counting snow, which he had never seen in his life, just the wind chill in the evenings and the ice covering the ground in the mornings had him all bent out of shape. Tohopka, as well, seemed none too keen of winters in the Vale, but luckily he had a roof over his head in the stables, and every single night before going to bed, the Whitesage man would make sure the stallion was comfortable and warm. Hopefully Toh didn't resent him for smothering him in blankets and pelts.

He was just on his way to see the mustang, whistling without a care in the world, making his morning rounds as he always did. Between making sure Sedona was alright and still making her steady recovery -- ever since her incident, Nick had become more protective of his sister than ever -- and checking in on Tohopka every chance he got, Phoenix was quite a busy man in this winter season.

Something scurried in a flash of color beside him, stark brown against the brilliance of the packed snow; the cowboy blinked, then blinked again, as he looked over his shoulder in a futile attempt to see what in the world that was. "Huh," he murmured to himself, stumped, before continuing on his way and warbling all the same.

Up ahead he saw something that at first appeared to be moving snow -- but he soon realized it was just a very lightly colored luperci digging in the snow. Another oddity. "You lookin' fer somethin', miss?" he asked amicably, keeping a respectable distance from the other Mistwalker -- completely oblivious the mustelid that passed by earlier had made off with the price. Nevertheless, he squatted and placed his hands on his knees as his bright green eyes scanned the area.

She almost looked familiar, as though he had seen her in passing; but then again, there were still quite a few Mistwalkers he still hadn't properly met.

A whistled little tune turned her ears, and Posey glanced over to see a hybrid man – coffee-brown and sienna in color, with a sharp coyote face – stroll along the snowy paths toward her. Her bushy tail wagged low at her hocks, though her rheumy eyes avoided his in favor of peering in the direction the ermine fled. She'd been gearing up to chase after the mischievous critter, but maybe she wouldn't need to, with this young fellows help!

Dropped a bracelet, I did, 'n' that li'l devil purloined it! the elder exclaimed, her dark nose pointed toward the tiny pawprinst along the snow's crust. Y'can't hardly see 'im in the snow but for those beady li'l eyes. And Posey's own didn't work as well as they used to. A winter-phase stoat fleeing through the snow was asking for a bit much, though she thought he could be up a pine – or someone's shoulder – by now. Probably chittering to himself in laughter, the adorable terror!

She scoffed, but smiled at the man. Y' must be Sedona's kin. She'd smelled him around and likely seen him at a distance, but Posey never spent time near the stables. While open-minded about many things, the old wolf – northern-born and feral – was past learning new tricks, like dealing with livestock. She was fond of the cowgirl who'd always treated her so kindly, but their lives didn't overlap much, so it made sense that she wouldn't have formally met the brother yet, either.

I'm Posey Prior, an Elkenfrey, the elderly she-wolf offered brightly.

He blinked at the older woman's words, spinning around as if he could still catch a glimpse of the thief. Well, he reckoned that explained the blur of something that he passed by earlier, and he squinted at the little paw prints still in the snow. "Well, how 'bout that," Nick breathed, a bit incredulous. "I can, ah, try 'n find the fella?" he chuckled, not trying to make light of the situation, but, well. In a way, it was kind of funny. At least, to him. Maybe not so much to the bracelet owner.

Her name was Posey, and she no doubt knew who his sister was. The Whitesage nodded and scratched the back of his neck, tail wagging behind him amicably. "Yep, sure am," he affirmed, flashing a little lopsided grin at her. "'M Phoenix Whitesage. Real nice t'meet ya, Miss Posey." Her name didn't immediately jog his memory; perhaps Sedona had mentioned her before, maybe in passing.

His green eyes looked back to the faint trail left behind, and he wriggled his toes as snow caught between them. "Here, c'mon, let's go look for this lil' guy," he urged, sniffing the air to try and catch a whiff of the mustelid. "Can't have made it too far." Except if it was some sort of weasel or ferret or mink or something it absolutely could be gone by now; their tiny little legs were fast, Nick knew for a fact.

He jogged after the prints, eyes squinting as he scanned over the ice for any sort of weird, non-snow movement.
