A small group of harbour seals were noticeable off Inferni’s shores one morning. Soon they had come in close enough to be heard across the water. Two brave figures waded into the waters off Hades’ Beach that day. The sun was high, and the wind only added a dull sway of rhythm to the waves they traversed. Virue squinted at the glimmer that bounced off the bay, comprised of watery parapets that sunk and rose in a timely sort of dance that he thought was beautiful. He sniffled against the damp. Droplets sprayed back into his mottled face as he paddled, looking over and blinking away the moisture that settled along his eyelashes, he could see Vesper not too far away; her gray head protruding above the water. They were both headed for the same target: a small island on which a gaggle of seals had decided to haul out. He could see their plump forms resting on the craggy island, like large rocks painted gray, white, black, sticking out sorely among the dull coastal stone.

Virue pulled himself onto the flattest piece of shore he could, his paws scrabbling at the rock before he was able to finally climb from the water. His fur clung to his body, revealing his small shape that usually hid itself away beneath his fluffy, spotted layer. The Sciens shook his fur loose, and it immediately became a shaggy knoll of tawny and off-white. The swim was relatively short, but he was still winded. His eyes swept up, following the chalk-white marks his claws had made before landing on Vesper's cool blue eyes. Virue’s ears floated and bobbed as if evading some invisible force, present in the air, looking up the rocky surface toward the creatures that happily suntanned, resting themselves after a morning of fishing. “Wh-what's th-the plan, Aquila?” He questioned in loyal fashion, addressing her by rank in a facetious way that he hoped she found to be humorous. That, and if a plan couldn't be made...he could always just run up the hill like a maniac.

OOC: Gasp, Vesper is in a different form (Secui).

IC:

Why had she thought this was a good idea?

Vesper paddled against the small waves, the salty spray clinging to her whiskers, and grimaced as a larger wall of water splashed down on her, soaking her head and threatening to roll her under. But she persisted, coughing, and her claws found stone; she hauled herself onto the shore and followed suit in shaking out her fur—the thick ruff of her Secui form humorously spiked.

Bedraggled and humorless, she stared up at the blubbery figures of the oblivious seals before Virue playfully addressed her, and her expression changed to something wicked, youthful. Ah, now she remembered why she’d wanted to do this; it was going to be fun, and Vesper didn’t have many chances at fun these days. Doing something delightfully stupid with Virue would help her revisit her lost youth and—hopefully—feed the clan for days, if they knew what they were doing.

She realized she didn’t.

“They’re fat and slow, how much of a problem can they be?” Vesper asked: famous last words. She peered once again at the grey, dappled things. “You should keep them from getting to the water or we’ve lost them. Help me pick out a smaller one.”

Virue couldn't help but giggle. “I th-think I just saw a p-piece of driftwood float by that y-you should knock on.” That was the saying, wasn't it? Maybe he had just spouted nonsense, and he either sounded really ambiguous, or really stupid. Either way, it warranted a small jump from his mottled ears which bore the visual brunt of his innermost emotions.

Virue nodded to his leader and began to fearlessly scurry up the miniscule incline. His frontmost foot latched on a soft piece of moss in the crag, and he frowned, turning to Vesper with uncertainty. “Wh-what exactly did you mean by ‘smaller’?” He asked her, eyes squinting in mock confusion. To him none of them really seemed all that small. Actually, they were all giant, fat sea-beasts to him. They all made strange noises that weirded the shit out of him...but he wouldn't tell Vesper that. One of the larger seals turned to look at him and he couldn't help but glance in the other direction. “Th-they probably taste funny,” he figured, since they certainly looked funny.

He shook off all these thoughts of doubt, and instead looked up for a moment to retrieve his sanctity. The clouds still hung in his thoughts and behind his eyelids until he opened to see oversized sheep dragging themselves about the rocks. That's all they were. Virue approached the outermost seal with the demeanor of one who meant to start something important. He yapped and growled at the stray animal. The seal gave some resistance, but in the end it backed off to join the denser mass of its brethren. Then Virue did the same with every seal that seemed too far away from the others, and when the herd was gathered, he encircled it swiftly, trying to keep them all together. For a moment he felt pride in his natural herding ability, and stole a look at Vesper, smiling. Unfortunately he had taken his attention away from where he was going, and in the midst of his hurrying around in a circle, he slipped and tweaked his bad knee, rolling right into the brunt of the slow, blubbery herd. Virue looked up to see half a dozen whiskered faces, some peering, others calling loudly. It didn't sound friendly. Quickly, the boy gathered himself and scrambled through some, and jumped clumsily over others. One seal chased him like a maniac—fins slapping along the ground rapidly in pursuit of the small coyote. They went around in circles well outside the herd. “V-vesper! P-please, can y-you help?!” Virue shouted to his friend. Slap slap slap went the seal.

Virue hesitated, his baby blues latching onto her, but Vesper shook her head dismissively. “There have to be babies somewhere,” she suggested, and laughed. “We won’t find out if they taste funny if we stand around chatting, will we?” She mocked him with a raised brow and wagging tail, not at all serious about the whole ordeal. They, a couple of land predators used to chasing rabbits, were going to attempt to hunt an island of seals. How could she be serious?

They didn’t look dangerous, fat and lazy as they appeared. Even the way they moved, herded expertly by the little coy-collie, was disarming. Bouncing on blubbery stomachs, undulating with clawed fins scraping against the rock, the seals barked nervously and rolled into each other, seeking comfort among the other massive gray bodies. Vesper trotted closer, lowering her head and watching with narrowed eyes in case a weaker or slower animal stood out.

Then Virue tripped. The tide turned like the waves crashing against the rocky island, and Vesper jerked her head up fearfully when Virue disappeared among the fat bodies.

“Kid, where did you g—” she started to shout, but then his freckled face appeared. He clambered over shouting seals and stumbled toward Vesper as one angry animal—a big male—pursued him. The boy called for help, and Vesper growled as she rushed bravely forward.

The whiskered face lunged for her. Jaws met in her scruff, and the seal jerked his head and flung the little coywolf into the sea.

THE WORD OF THE DAY IS PINNIPED

[300+]

IC:

As soon as he knew the sea-beast was no longer behind him, he turned with a whirl of his head, panting like a maniac. Vesper had rushed in to confront the seal. From what Virue believed, that seal would surely fall against the coywolf he took in such high regard. Yet, without any warning, his beloved leader was hurled off the edge of the island into the foamy waters of the bay. Virue didn't have the capacity to react until several moments after the sound of Vesper’s larger secui body parting the water with force. Vibrant blue eyes became enormous, and with complete ignorance to anything besides his friend, he clumsily scurried to the ledge closest to where she departed. Before he could see whether or not she emerged, he could hear the mass of seals coming closer. Were they mounting another attack? Virue really didn't want to find out, but Vesper did seem set on nabbing one of these creatures for some reason or another that he couldn't think of now.

The small coyote turned toward the phalanx of grey-brown and whiskers, their bald heads bobbing in their odd movements. They called at him angrily. Virue’s head tilted. “Just o-one of you p-please?” They called menacingly, and a few drew closer to the small land creature. “Vespeeer!” He shouted in complaint, “I like c-catching rabbits b-better!” A smaller brown seal protruded from the rest of the pack then, out toward him, nostrils flaring. “O-oh?” He practically whispered. Virue squinted. “P-picking on someone your own size, eh?” He giggled. This seemed to incite an attack from the brown-hued pinniped, and as it lunged for him, the coyote evaded with finesse, darting to the side. He strafed away from the cliffside reluctantly, hoping that the Aquila hadn't hit a rockhead just beneath the waves.

He was on a small island with a mob of bloodthirsty water-carnivores eyeing him up, and all he could think about was what would Rialu do at that moment in time. Probably single-handedly take down all of them, that was a realistic assumption, wasn't it?

The surf rushed over her head, and for a moment Vesper was in a quiet, weightless place.

It might have been comforting if she wasn’t so pissed off at the stupid seal for throwing her stupid ass out to sea. Her legs thrashed instinctually even before she knew which way was up, her body tossed around by the waves, and when her head broke the surface she gasped for air and found her face full of enough foam and salt for both her eyes and her nostrils. Squinting and snorting, she paddled until she was rather roughly shoved up against a piece of debris, which scraped her shoulder and made her curse quietly.

Why had she thought this would be a good idea?

Virue’s yowl broke out over the grunts and barks of the angry seals, and Vesper lashed out again, paddling toward the rocky shore and clawing at it until she found purchase. Her shoulder ached, her scruff ached, and her entire body complained too. She was too old for this shit, but she wasn’t about to abandon Virue.

“Hey, you fat whiskery fucker!” the esteemed Aquila of Inferni shrieked at the small brown seal that had lunged for Virue, and when the animal turned its head she ran toward it (or hobbled, thanks to her shoulder and her back hip). She was done messing around.

Rather brutally, she flung herself at the seal and dug her teeth into it. It screamed, a noise that seemed to finally strike fear in the hearts of the others, who began to see the coyotes as predators rather than fluffy nuisances. One or two bared teeth, but Vesper continued to bite and try to shake her victim, whose blubbery neck would only prolong its death.

Virue watched as the Aquila returned with a vengeance. Something about seeing his leader’s face again, wet with her encounter with the water, inspired him. Years from now, he imagined standing on the very beach that served as the bridge that began this journey, and telling Inferni’s children a comedic-woeful tale of how Vesper single-handedly defeated vile water demons. What does one do in the event of being tossed off an island, and into rough waters below? Virue thought, why, you climb back up onto the shores of course, and finish what you started.

Whether Virue actively fed off the emotion of everything around him, or was simply a hyper idiot, he found himself another seal. The boy approached, and worked it away from the others, using his harsh canine voice as a wedge. His blues flickered as if in connexion with the rough, dark waters that licked the flanks of the very island he stood upon. Quite swiftly he leapt for his target, biting down on its lower neck with force. The small coyote tried to end the attack quickly out of empathy for the other animal, and even after he'd writhed it around and let it lie, a word of apology was sent silently across the water. The other seals had begun to flee, many slipping into the water with a loud, clumsy slumping sound scarcely heard over the ruckus of lapping waves. Virue turned toward Vesper, and just like that it was his mother he saw for but a moment, in the boggy marshes of Mer Bleue. Then it became a truth once more, and he smiled, glad to see the second maternal figure he'd been lucky enough to have as an awkward, small, childish man—whose sentences were partly shattered in being unconfident.

His ears twitched, but it was more of a stirring of excitement than of anxiety—like stitchings of clouds had rubbed amongst each other and electricity had gathered within their pockets. His smile went slantward and humorous. “Soooo,” he eased, sitting down, his toes wriggling along the oceanic, mossy rock. “Want a third?” Then he half-chuckled before a sneeze suddenly commandeered his voice for its own systematic purposes.
