through acrid clouds of summer flies

Summer's end brings one blazing hot day, and overworking coyotes risk heat stroke. Cool off with a clanmate or provide medical care to someone suffering from the heat.

The heat dazed her.

Vesper lolled her tongue and pulled in harsh, shallow breaths in an attempt to cool off, but resolutely she placed her paws on the worn track through the Waste. She stopped to sniff from time to time, blue eyes on a wavering horizon, but no intruders and no prey dared to cross her path.

They were probably all hidden away in the water or the shade.

The Aquila pressed on regardless. After the scuffle with the lone wolf, she was again on high alert—or tried to be, when a throbbing headache constantly broke her focus. She fought it off with the same mental exercises she'd used for years, but soon that wouldn't work, either. She stumbled briefly, cursed the uneven ground of the flat plains, and licked her lips, coating her whiskers with drool.

Blinking, Vesper stopped and let herself settle on her haunches. It was fine to take a quick break, she thought, but her limbs trembled beneath her as she rocked to a sit.

Something began pinching her. Ves curled her lip and growled at a black blob that turned blurry as it began to hop around, but its voice was muffled in her ears. She snapped her teeth weakly at the pinching then grunted as a cramp went through her. Panting, she lolled slowly to the earth.

Stormeye jumped on the Aquila, biting her, and when she did not wake speed off, cawing and screeching loudly, toward the mansion.

+500 Let me know if there is anything you want me to fix here. Did a little PP. Also have Clover here as an NPC.

It seemed like Clover had been busy taking care of her own things, but with the new pups around, she could have been busy taking care of them as well. Still, it was nice to finally have some time to spend with her friend. Crucifix and the dog woman had formed a friendship over their many lessons together under the pack's healer Harosheth. Both of them had learned much from their teachings, and at least Crucifix had been able to put them to use with some of those in Inferni when they became injured. She wasn't sure if the dog woman had done the same, but was sure she would soon get her chance to do so.

Both females were in the greenhouse, the Magister insisting they stocked up on some of the healing plants in hospital house. She knew she couldn't ignore her duties before too long, and at least being inside the buildings gave them a break from the heat of the outdoors. Summer was coming to an end and making the way for fall, but the heat had still increased despite this fact. It was a nice thing the brown girl had some shorter fur, but that wouldn't help her that much. Heat was a powerful force.

When the two left the small building, both their ears turned to the sound of the bird's screeching. Clover recognized it as Vesper's, and considering the way it was behaving, something must have happened to her. Worry began to well up in the girl's body over the thought of their leader having been hurt. Since there were two of them, they could take advantage of this to help the Aquila, Why don't.. you follow.. the bird.. to Vesper.. I'll go.. to the.. hospital house.. and set.. things up.. Clover stood a better chance of being able to carry her back should there be a need for it. The gray one gave a nod, passing along her plants, You take these then. The girl gathered the plants in her hands before they parted their separate ways.

Clover padded after the black bird, soon coming to Vesper herself. She was laying against the ground and not getting back up. She moved over to the leader, shaking her gently before taking her into her arms, carrying her back in the direction she came. There was no point trying anything out here when all their items were back in the hospital house.

Crucifix's head turned up when the two finally made their way there. She directed Clover over to one of the empty rooms, laying the Aquila gently against the ground. The Magister felt along her fur, the heat sticking to her made even more apparent. She instructed Clover to stay with her, watching her while she went out to get some water. Much like she did when it came to the plants, she gathered a large bowl from the mansion, gathering water from the nearby source in the back of the mansion before returning to the pair. She carefully poured some over the leader's body before resting it in front of her, hoping it would be enough to wake her up.

OOC: You can basically skip the Clover section other than the last sentence-ish, since it’s just restating what you’d written in your post from her POV. >__> I don’t know why I did it but whatever WORDS! *shovels them into mouth*

IC:

Muffled wings batted around Vesper’s head like the rush of blood in her ears, and then she rose.

It was a sweltering day; Clover’s thick grey coat was normally a boon in the Canadian seasons, but on an oddly hot day such as this, it was only a detriment.

She wondered why she was still trying to help work outside, gathering plant cuttings and roots and leaves to mix for Harosheth’s use—but then she considered the alternative. Her niece and nephew were getting older, turning more into small coydogs than the sacks of puppy fluff they’d resembled before, and as they needed Versace less and less, they spent most of their time in their family’s rooms. Clover still wasn’t yet ready to face the reality of being a “big sister,” not when the little things Jehan made threatened to soak up every drop of affection their fathers could offer.

Crucifix was a friend, and one whose company Clover oddly enjoyed, brusque as the dog could be. It was probably just because the timid coyote was nice to her.

She panted, then pricked her ears when frantic caws rang out over the yard. Her brow furrowed as the black bird zeroed in on the pair, circling and croaking, forgetting any high-speech it knew in its panic. “That’s Vesper’s,” she said, recognizing the clouded eye, and frowned. Crucifix told her to go after her, and Clover handed over the plants before running in the corvid’s wake.

When she saw the Aquila motionless on the ground, Clover’s heart leaped in her throat. “Vesper!” she barked, grabbing and shaking her, but the coywolf only lolled her head. Eyes open to mere slits stared off into space, and she formed a groggy sound.

“Fuck,” spat Clover, then pulling the small coywolf gently into her arms.

She burst into the hospital house and followed Crucifix, too numb with fear to speak as she set the female on the floor. She sat beside her leader, stroking her fur and listening to her breathing until Crucifix returned, and soaked her.

“Vesper,” Clover said, and jostled her shoulder gently. Her brown eyes cut fearfully to Cru’s green ones. “Wh-what if she doesn’t wake up?”

“Unnnh,” answered Vesper.
* * *

The scrawny coywolf managed to lift heavy eyelids, the world fuzzy. Familiar smells surrounded her, along with voices that grew clearer by the second, until she became abruptly cognizant of the water in front of her. She tried to lurch toward it, and tipped it with her chin—spilling some out onto the floor around her, but greedily licking until the last drop escaped her tongue.

She groggily turned her head, muzzle scraping the floor. “Clover?” The shaggy dog stared back at her, worry overtaking relief, but her face grew blurry again, and with a grunt the leader dropped her head onto her paws.

Clover whined at Crucifix, not certain what else to do, but lightly stroked the Aquila’s leg. “You’re suffering from heatstroke,” she managed to say.

Vesper grunted in answer, but sighed as Clover rubbed her paws and limbs. The feeling didn’t last long before the grey dog stood, nodding at Crucifix. “I’ll get more water,” she said. “I’ll see if there’s anything in the basement that might be colder.”

Her footsteps retreated, and Ves tilted her ears toward the runt.

Crucifix could see the worry in her friend's eyes when she brought the leader back to the hospital house, resting her in the room she had prepared. She did her best to assure Clover that Vesper was going to be fine. Heat stroke was nothing too serious, and something they could easily take care of as long as they cooled down her body and got her plenty of fluids. She was sure the leader would take it over being in the heat. She would be better staying indoors for a while now. She had gotten up to take care of her tasks, leaving the dog woman to watch over the Aquila until she came back.

The brown girl saw some of the worry leaving Clover, but it would more than likely remain as long as Vesper was in this sort of state. Her attention drew down to the Aquila as she noticed the water that was in front of her, tilting it down to get it into her lips, though poured a fair amount onto the ground before her. This might also help her as well. The water soaking into her fur might help to cool her body off, causing the dangers from the heat stroke to leave her.

Crucifix's green eyes turned on Clover as she explained what she was doing, heading out of the building to gather her things, leaving the leader and the Magister alone. The girl turned her head down to the lighter woman, taking a seat at her side and resting her hands in her lap, Your body.. is still.. very hot.. you'll need.. to stay.. here until.. we can.. cool you.. down.. I am.. releaved.. your raven.. found us.. before this.. became any.. worse.. Her eyes turned back briefly to the door, watching for the dog to return before her hands reached forward for the bowl, I can.. get you.. some more.. water.. if you'd.. like..

151 I'm sorry this is short. I was at a complete loss of what to write.

Crucifix sat beside her and explained that Vesper's body was hot, though the Aquila did not initially understand. Her coat was heavy with water, which cooled her skin; her tongue spilled from her jaws in a quiet pant. She was hot, so was this the cause of her loss of consciousness? She couldn't remember passing out on a patrol before, other than when sleep deprivation was at its worst. Her mind pieced these things together at an alarmingly sluggish rate.

Clover... is getting some, Ves remembered, and remembered that the grey dog had explained the heatstroke, too. She could not recall hardly anything else other than the sensation of cramping before she'd fallen. I want to go drown myself in the ocean, she added, grumbling; it was a better alternative than catching fire like her head seemed to be.

She shut her eyes. When does this go away?

+300 It's all good Raze

Crucifix had remembered that her friend had gone to look for more water to get for Vesper, but there was no harm in her doing the same. She trusted her leader not to just get up and try wandering about while the two of them were away. Sure there was work to be done, but it couldn't be done if she wasn't in a good condition. It was something Crucifix had pointed out before when it came to Cartier.

Green gaze rested on the Aquila's form when she made her suggestion. Well.. it was a big body of water, but there was still the travel to get there. She wouldn't want to risk Vesper falling to the heat again. It would be better for them to just bring the water to her. If they could just soak her body that way, then it would still give the same results. The brown girl felt a little uneasy at her wording, but kept herself quiet. She was sure it was just a use of words and not something Vesper would take part in.

The magister shook her head gently when the lighter woman spoke up, questioning when this went away. She probably meant the feeling from the heat. Her hands moved together, The feeling.. won't subside.. until your.. body cools.. down from.. the heat.. As long.. as we.. take care.. of this.. and make.. sure you.. stay hydrated.. it shouldn't.. be too.. long..

Crucifix's head turned back towards the door, her eyes keeping out for Clover to return. She hoped the dog woman was having some luck in finding things that could help cool Vesper down much quicker. She knew there were those in Inferni who didn't like just laying around when there were things to be done.

The tiny healer reassured her, and Vesper sighed as she dropped her head on her paws an stretched her body out tiredly. This has never happened to me before, she managed to say, but her voice was too exhausted to convey the prickling worry behind it. Her mind felt sluggish, and her body ached, and she wondered if this was because she was old or just because she was stupid.

She opened her eyes wider and attempted to sit up, with poor results. Don't tell anyone about this, do you hear me, she growled, and when a puzzled-looking Clover appeared in the doorway, she added, Not even Basilio and Jehan, not even Cartier, especially not Vicira.

The grey dog glanced at Crucifix, face wrought with worry, then brought a bucket of water from the pond and a wood dish from the kitchen. It's just heatstroke, Vesper, nothing's gonna happen to you, she said uncertainly, pouring some of the water into the dish and indicating that Ves drink from it. The scarred coywolf merely glared, and Clover glanced at the other healer again. Promise, she said reluctantly, then to Cru: Promise so she drinks. Then we should get rags to soak in the water, that will hold the water and coolness better than just pouring it on her, right?

Crucifix could understand the leader's frustration, but there really was nothing wrong with the situation. Anyone could fall to heat stroke, especially in the time of year they were in. This was someone who was supposed to be a figure of strength, and here she was being beaten by the heat. She was getting older, but that was no excuse. As she had thought before, anyone could be in her situation, and this wasn't the first time one of the leaders had been injured in some way. Cartier was at fault for working so hard with injuries. She hoped he had at least stop doing this. It had been some time since she had been able to check up on him.

The brown girl was taken back a bit by the leader's sudden request to not tell anyone about what had happened to her, not even her own mate. She made it clear she didn't want her daughter to know the most. She wasn't sure what to think about this. Promises were not meant to be broken, but should someone ask about this, would it be sin to tell them she could not? She could not be a liar in the eyes of the lord. She had already crossed this line once, and did not wish to do it again.

Clover had reappeared in the room, having poured more water for the Aquila. Crucifix rattled about in her mind before finally nodding, Ok Vesper.. I promise.. Her ears moved down as she watched her leader. The Magister was not going leave until she was sure Vesper would be alright to move back out into the sunlight. Her head turned up to the dog woman at her side, wondering if she had the same mental conflict she did. It was likely not, but much like her, only made the promise so their leader would take care of herself. She couldn't understand it, but there was no backing out of it now.
