OOC: "Repurpose an old piece of leather into something new, or give an old outfit some new flair!" Sorry for the crummy start. WC: +2

IC: The soft scraping of the stone tool against the pliable leather could be heard coming from inside the rickety cabin. Inside, Zsorthia worked on smoothing out the inner surface of an old summer weight cloak that was now going to be turned into a fur-lined winter weight cloak. The surface had to be roughed up before she could attach the bear fur pelt to the inside and collar of the garment, and it would take a while to texturize the entire hide.

Working diligently by the light of the filtered sun coming through the busted window, the red coydog hummed quietly to herself as she went. It was an old tune, one she knew from childhood that her mother used to sing to her. It was one of the only surviving comforts of her past. Pausing in her task, the Mercedes woman took a swing of whiskey from the flask sitting at the head of the splayed out cloak upon the floor. Sure there were probably better locations to do her tanning, but today the threat of rain made the woman weary of working outdoors. Her vats of brain mixtures and work space outside was packed away and the wooden frames for her hides were all leaned against the side of the shack. At least the cloak was a small enough piece it didn't require a lot of work space to be dealt with.

Grunting, leaning back on her heels, the red woman sighed, and looked over her handiwork. She'd need to roughen the next two cloaks she had lined up and waiting on the small rickety table nearby, then she could worry about attaching the fur. Glancing out the window a moment at the condition of the sky, she could see the storm clouds gathering. Yep, it was the right decision to work inside today.

The best part of getting lost
Is finding yourself

The more that Dahlia thought about, the more it made sense. In the past, at least when it came to hunting, she was not one to dwell on what could be done with all the parts of the animal. She just needed to get something so that she could feed her family or feed the others that were part of the group she was living with, be that Inferni, Salsola, or even the members of the two loner bands. There wasn't much of a reason to think more on something like now.

Now that she was in a position to make something of herself, to do what she wanted, the more she started to think smart. And it didn't help that Nazario's word of 'liability' constantly hung in the back of her mind. Perhaps it was that word in turn that helped to motivate her. In order to prove him wrong, she had to work hard to show him she did have some skills that would make her a useful member of the Gang.

Even if he already believed that to be true, it was still something to strive for.

So, in terms of taking care of an animal, she knew how to take care of the meat, the bones could be saved to make some tools, something else that might be looked into. The organs was something she was still in the process of trying to figure out, unless anyone was looking to eat them along with some freshly cooked meat. Well, if she was trying to spice up some of their kills, then maybe it wouldn't hurt to try and do the same with the organs as well.

So all that left was dealing with the fur or hide of the animal. When it came to such a thing, she was at a loss. She was used to handing over that piece to someone else. Now, if she could learn how to care for the hides, that would be something different.

Then she really could tend to a whole animal.

The gray coyote turned her head up towards the sky, darker clouds starting to hang over them. It looked like it was going to rain soon, meaning it would be wise that she get inside before the water started to pour down from the heavens. Her head turned to the side, noticing someone else peeking up at the clouds. The dark pelted woman was someone Dahlia had seen around, but never really knew that much about her. Raising a hand, she gave a wave to the woman, "Looks like we're in store for some crap weather huh?"

It's all good. +400 words.

She almost missed the approach of the other woman. A double take out the window and then another out the door made sure Zsorthia wasn't seeing things. Sure enough one of her pack mates was coming up to the cabin. The woman gave a friendly wave. Oh what was her name? Dolly? No... Dahlia! That was it! After all, the entire pack had attended her and Boone's wedding not that long ago. The Mercedes woman internally scolded herself for not knowing the names and faces of her fellow Ashen as well as she should.

Giving a deep nod to the woman, Zsorthia waved back, scraping tool in hand. "Looks like we're in store for some crap weather huh?" The other commented and the red coydog snorted with a soft chuckle. "Most definitely. I've had to batten everything down. Why don't you come on in before it hits." She beckoned Dahlia up onto the porch and into the rickety cabin with a friendly smile, sitting back on her heels again from her spot on the floor where she worked on the cloak. "Dahlia, right?"

Setting her tool aside, Zsorthia stood, and offered a paw to shake. "We ain't properly met, I know. But I've seen ya around." She said with a smile. "You and Boone make a great couple." She winked before turning towards a low slung table where a collection of dishware utensils sat, among other items of daily life. "What brings you out here to my place?" She glanced over her shoulder. "Can I offer you a drink?" The woman held up two cups in offering, ticking her head at a jug recognizable as some of Evelyn's moonshine that sat on a shelf on the wall above the fireplace.

Dahlia was not fond of the rain, though she wasn't sure she knew of anyone that might. Well, maybe Santiago might with how many times he went to the water's edge to go fishing, but that was really the only one that was coming to mind. Any other time, the only good time for having water on the body was when any of them were washing up.

A smile moved along her muzzle as the dark female offered to have the other coyote come inside her home, at least giving both of them a place to stay dry, even before the storm hit. Well... at least she would have already been dry which would have left Dahlia to go sprinting to get back to the Bar.. and then have to clean up whatever mess she dragged inside from the storm.

Moving up to the porch, the gray coyote lowered her head in greeting, carefully stepping inside the cabin. Her green gaze moved up to the meet with the woman's, "Yeah, that's right. You're... Zsorthia right? I don't think we've been able to formally meet. Were you with the Posse?" She might have recalled seeing someone like her with their group, but so many incidents in the loner bands just seemed to blur together at this point.

And it didn't do them much good to think on the past did it?

Taking her hand in to shake with the darker woman, she couldn't help but give a small blush when she heard that comment. She loved being with Boone, obviously, or they wouldn't have been getting married in the first place. It was nice to hear that others approved of their mateship as well.

To the offer of a drink, Dahlia politely declined, but prompted to answer the question that had been asked of her, "Well, I was just coming out to think mainly. I've been working a lot with butchering and hunting, and I figured it would only make sense that I started learning how to take care of the animals' furs and hides. I wasn't entirely sure where to start though." She had no prior knowledge, so this would be something entirely new to her.

Where Zsorthia had come from, rain was uncommon. But when it hit, it hit violently and with little warning. Flooding was common and you needed to take shelter every time. Here, it was usually just a bunch of steady rain and windy conditions. It was depressing, muddy and annoying more than anything. And yet, Dahlia's assumption would still be correct, that Zsorthia, like many others, did not care to be soaked by the rain storms, and preferred only to wash up on her own terms.

"You're... Zsorthia right?" The red woman nodded once in confirmation. "I don't think we've been able to formally meet. Were you with the Posse?" Acknowledging the other woman's guess of her original affiliation with the Drygrasse Posse, Zsorthia gave a small flourish of the wrist, a half bow and a playful smile. "Aye, that I was. But now we're all the Ashen yeah?" She chuckled as they shook hands. "It's truly a pleasure to meet you Dahlia." Zsorthia said before moving about the cabin.

Shrugging as her offer of a drink was declined, Zsorthia set the second glass down before pouring a shot of 'shine for herself, meanwhile listening, with perked ears as her pack mate spoke. "--I figured it would only make sense that I started learning how to take care of the animals' furs and hides. I wasn't entirely sure where to start though." Zsorthia turned and grinned, tail wagging. "Well..." She began. Then, lifting her shot glass in a silent toast, she slammed it back grimacing at the fire down her throat, before barking out harshly. "Y'came to the right place! I can help with that." She spoke roughly still trying not choke on the after burn of the alcohol. "Damn me Evelyn's brew can RIP!" She hooted and then grinned almost ferally again, wiping a stinging tear from her eyes. "Pardon me, I'm still adjustin' to her brand." She shook herself out in a full bodied doggish manner as if shaking off water and then set her glass back down upon the table.

Smacking her lips, she then chuckled speaking more normally. "Ah, right. As I was saying." She clapped her paws together and crossed the room to the back wall where a small pelt stretched on a frame she'd yet to begin fleshing sat. "I'm a Tanner, so I can definitely help you with the furs and hides aspect of things." She chuckled and ran her paw through the rabbit fur then showed her packmate the cloaks she'd been working on. "I'm working on expanding into things like outfits, not just cloaks and bags and basic items. Though at this moment I'm re-purposing these particular cloaks to re-fur 'em for Winter." She explained. "I can definitely teach you a few things. It all depends on what you want to do..." She raised her brows at Dahlia.

But we're all Ashen now yeah?

Those words seemed to play over and over in her head. All of them were part of the collective whole now, no longer two separate bands that just worked with one another. It was great to have everyone come together as they did, just a shame that it hadn't been under better circumstances than the ones they were stuck with. Even so, they had won, and they were all able to move on with their lives. A grin curled over her lips to the reddish woman's gesture, bowing her head back, "And the same to you."

Green gaze fell over Zsorthia as she fiddled around with her drink. She had stayed focused for the moment, giving the gray coyote some happiness that on this random day she had been able to come across someone that would be able to help her when it came to taking care of pelts. Eyes widened slightly to her sudden raised tone. A soft chuckle came from the other female, "Hey, no problem. She came by the bar once before and caught me working. She got me to try one of her batches. Was pretty good, but that's also coming from someone that doesn't really drink a lot."

How nice it was to just have a normal conversation with someone, not having so many worries. This was what she had been missing.

Returning back to the topic at hand, Dahlia's returned to attention to the dark woman, as well as the project she was currently working on. The idea of repurposing something had been enough to grab her attention. In a way, this was what she was intending to do with the whole body of any animal that she, or anyone else in the gang, was able to catch and wanted her to prepare it. Moving one hand out towards the cloaks, she spoke, "If you don't mind, I would love to help you out with that. I can learn as we go. It'll give me a peek into how to use the pelts. I'm sure there will be another time where we can go into the process details yeah?"

The old homestead will always be there, waiting.

It wasn't often that Zsorthia could be found in such a genial mood. Today, despite the weather rolling in, was just a good day. She'd woken up cheerful and was enjoying her work. And now, with some good company to share the day with, it seemed to lift her spirits even more.

It was a lucky thing that Dahlia was in a mood to put up with the red woman's shenanigans with her drink however. Since she'd decline to partake with her, the dusty grey woman was missing out on the 'fun'. But at least she seemed genuinely amused by Zsorthia's hooting and watering eyes.

The Mercedes woman couldn't help but find the Winthrop woman charming in her own right. She was kinda sweet and had this sort of calming air about her that made Zsorthia feel at ease around her. It was different than how Lyssa made her feel. It wasn't a bubbly kind of charming. But still that friendly warmth that Zsorthia wasn't accustomed to, but still somehow brought out the best in her.

As Zsorthia went about displaying her wares to the other Ashen, she noted that the re-purposed cloaks seemed to catch Dahlia's attention the most and so she laid them out on the floor and table for her to view. "It'll give me a peek into how to use the pelts. I'm sure there will be another time where we can go into the process details yeah?" Zsorthia grinned, and nodded. Sounds fine to me. I wouldn't mind the assistance. And if you pick things up quick enough I can apprentice ya. She swished her tail. Do you got the time to begin work now? She asked with a raised brow. Outside she could smell the rain, and just see the first drops beginning to fall.

Dahlia was not always the best when it came to social interactions, but it seemed so long as she kept herself on good terms with the others in the gang, then there would be no troubles. Really the only ones that seemed to have a problem with her were the ones that knew her from Inferni and knew of the stupid decisions that her sister dragged her into.

Granted, it had been her own choice to stay, but it was because of a direct result of her sister's actions that forced her to be in such a position. There was no need to go around telling everyone about her time in Salsola, but it did give her a slight edge. At least now if any of them were going to try and be fooled, she could pick out a fair amount of faces. The only ones she would not know were those born after her time...

But how many could that have been?

A smile formed over the gray coyote's muzzle. The idea of becoming an apprentice was both exciting, and annoying at the same time. While it would be great to be learning so much from another who knew far more on the subject than she did, the idea of constant meet ups and lessons would be a drag on top of all the other work that she was handling. Guess that was just the curse of learning something new.

Green gaze peered outside at the sky. No doubt the weather wouldn't let up anytime soon, and if she had something going on, then it certainly wasn't too important.

Dahlia's head turned back, giving the dark woman a nod, "Yeah, I've got time." Ears twitched to the sound of the rain beginning to fall. A soft chuckle came from her maw, "I really don't want to go running anywhere in the rain unless I have to. Hopefully it'll pass while we are working."

Not wanting to seem like she was intruding on Zsorthia's home, she waited for the dark woman to gesture and lead her over to the project she was working on.

The old homestead will always be there, waiting.

The rain began to pick up as Zsorthia moved to show her fellow pack mate the current work in progress she had. She could hear the pattering on the roof and her ears swiveled. Aye, you can definitely stay here while we work. I don't mind the company and the help. I've got three of these to do. She informed Dahlia with a grin. Now the first thing you'll wanna do is splay out the front end of the cloak like this. The inner seams need to be undone so we can redo them with the new fur lining. She explained, getting down on her paws and knees and running her fingers along the deep thread of the stitch she'd created herself on the leather earlier that spring.

It would be a shame in some right to have to redo the work she'd already put into the cloaks, but at the same time she knew she could trade these heavier fur ones for a better ware in the long run by reinforcing them now for winter when they were more needed. Grab that second one and see if you can start taking out the seam on it. Here's a knife. Be very careful not to puncture the leather itself. We'll have to patch it if y'do. Zsorthia instructed the other woman with careful words and indicated for her to splay the other cloak out beside her on the floor, handing her a second knife.

Side by side the two ripped at stitches, and the red coydog overlooked Dahlia's work making sure she pulled them properly and with care. The woman had deft fingers and soon the Mercedes woman handed her the cloak she was already working with, and began to teach her a new technique. Handing her a flattened stone, Zsorthia guided Dahlia's paw with the tool in it across the leather, loosening it in preparation to bind the new fur layer to it. Need to re-soften it so it's stretchy and pliable, y'know? She smiled as they worked together. It was actually quite cathartic to the Mercedes woman to teach another her trade and she found herself enjoying the closeness of the job.

We can start to wrap this up. ^^ | [+2] template by hilli Edits by Miranda

Dahlia's head turned along with the dark woman's to the sound of the raining starting to come down onto her roof. Seemed like both of them had been smart to either stay inside or take shelter. It would be some time before the storm would clear out, so it was a good thing there was a project that they would be able to use to pass up the time.

Zsorthia had gotten right into the explanation for not only what they would be doing with the cloaks, but also what the first step would be in order to get that done. She explained that the seams would need to be undone so that they could be readded with newer pelts of fur. A knife was then offered to her, as well as a warning to be careful with her work.

Being in the process of something so delicate was something that probably would have been better suited for either one of her sisters, not her, but if she was going to learn this art, she had to tough it out and do her best.

The gray coyote had settled down next to the dark one, having caught the lingering golden eyes moving over her hands while she worked. She was not a delicate worker, and it was painfully obvious that she was not in her element. Even so, the two of them had managed to get the stitches out. A new cloak was soon presented to her, as well as a stone. It felt a bit weird to have another woman taking her hand and using her own to show Dahlia how to use the tool she had brought over, but it was nothing more than a passing thought.

She gave a nod, waiting for the dark had to leave before she had begun to use the stone in the way that it had been shown to her. She tugged a bit at the piece, wondering if all this work she had been doing had any sort of effect on the leather and the pelt. Green gaze soon moved back up, "Are we doing this to the others ones then and then putting the seams back in?"

Yeah, we can start wrapping this one up. +300 words.
