It had taken a fair amount of time, but with no small amount of determination, Leonidas had managed to avoid the pack scent that wound its way through the northern pass. After enduring some high elevations and less than pleasant weather, a cold was presenting itself with a stuffy nose, but the wolfhound mix had endured the worst of it. A light sprinkling of snow had begun to fall earlier that morning, gentle enough to only have peppered the ground by the time noon had arrived, but the chill that came with the cold front pervading even at the suns highest point. The bright orb itself was no more than a dull glow behind the clouds, but the traveling luperci was offered some reprieve from the elements by the thick forest that now surrounded him and his massive steed.

Pines needles spread their thin green branches into the sky, providing a dense canopy that shielded the male for the most part, though the occasional trickle of snow still managed to alight upon his shoulders. The path they traveled was quiet though, even the birds declined to sing through the gentle snow, though the bright red of a cardinal would oftentimes flash in the corner of his eye. A cold wind would only rarely break through the dense covering a trees, sending a whispering sigh throughout the forest that caused branches to lean, and he to shiver in response to the sudden eerie wind.

Having traveled through the forest for a while, not confronted by canine or any other worrying living creature, he decided it was safe enough to give the equine a break from hauling him around. He dismounted from the mare with little grace, the horse promptly wandering away to nuzzle into the greens that peeked from the dusting of snow on the ground. Leonidas turned to make is way into the thicker part of the forest, eyes on the alert as they darted to and fro to examine every dancing shadow, the woodsman also trying to somewhat learn the lay of the land.

She was about sick and tired of this whole 'Ah! I'm shifting! It hurts I'm going to die oh no please save me sombodyyyy!' buisness.

It made Lyris feel weak and vulnerable. If a ticked off territorial loner just happened to stumble upon her as she was changing forms, that would be the end of Lyris Stryder. Not to mention just any canine passerby could laugh and point, writing Lyris and all of Sangi'lak off as weaklings. X'yrin had promised her she would get control of her forms soon. So why couldn't she control it? At least now she knew that she wouldn't change forms for a long time yet, as seemed to be the patterns with her changes. Once she changed, it would be no less than hours that she would have to writhe in pain again. Sometimes it was even days before her body decided it was tired of its current physique.

It had been less than an hour ago Lyris had morphed from Lupus to Optime- so this meant she had a sizable chunk of time she didn't have to worry about shedding and growing different skins again. At the moment, the girl was content with her journeying. The Sangi'lak member had been traveling for a short time yet, and had a feeling there was still a long way to go. Just outside of Sangi'lak borders she had been moving for somewhere around a day or two, and already her feet were getting tired. Her paw pads ached and her leg muscles burned- it was just like her movement from new Brunswick to Sangi'lak all over again. Lyris would be considered small for a Luperci- though it wasn't that she was devoid of all strength- she was just more for running and hunting. And she was slightly out of shape, considering this was her first traveling since she had joined Sangi'lak. If she wanted to become part of her pack Evan'ule ranking, she would have to build endurance.

At the time of Leonidas' appearance she had been kneeling beside a small stream with quickly moving water, wetting her parched throat. Her only warning was a shift of the wind and the surprise that rode on it with invisible wings. Loner. Lyris instinctively froze, the water cupped in her hands streaming through her fingers. Looking over her wild-maned shoulder and seeing nothing, the girl rose to her feet and skirted up against a thick-trunked pine. Hands behind her back, the Acknowledged rested her head against the tree and closed her eyes, taking a deep breath that made her chest rise and fall. She just had to collect herself. Alright, she was ready.

"Looking for something?" The words slithered between the trees like a snake on silent scales. For a moment it seemed like the voice had come from nowhere, that is, until the white Luperci showed herself. It was just a single step out of the woods, but the blanket of shadow that had concealed her dripped backwards over her frame, revealing that there was indeed a source for the strange speech. Hands on her hips, she waited for a reply from the man. I hope I didn't make a mistake.

The muffled sound of footsteps crunching through snow became monotonous and eventually unreal, the vacated air and empty branches like a vacuum, something that sucked away breaths that should have lingered, muffled sounds that should have echoed momentarily through the trees. His eyes were narrowed to the glare of snow and sun, and every green branch was like a brief reprieve as the delicate organs had already stared at the white for hours before. After having gone so long with an encounter he had grown comfortable, and his eyes flicked to clarify what was in his peripherals less constantly, until his gaze eventually zoned out upon the span that was ahead of him. He was snapped to by a voice, his steps immediately halted at the lonesome sound as his ears flicked to locate it's source.

He muttered a curse at the wind for not being in his favor, orange eyes twirled stealthily left in right in their sockets; though the voice was female, he was made no more at ease than had it been the rough growl of a bear. Leonidas had dealt with his fair share of hardship at the hands of strangers - though it was usually his bad attitude to blame - but his body naturally shifted to a protective stance, lanky legs bents somewhat and his body curling inward. A dark lip hitched with a momentary sneer, the fatty ridge of flesh lying flat again as a frown resettled upon his face. The man hated having his business questioned, yet the very deed seemed to be the method favored by most strangers as an introduction.

"I might be. But that's none ah yer business either way, now is it honey?" A gruff baritone in no way coddled the term of endearment, though his voice was devoid of scorn as well, the rough edge in his voice characterized by defensive intensity. And then a movement. The males eyes snapped warily at the sight, a woman's figure seemingly fabricated from what he thought to be mere snow and pine, but animated and moving. The glimmer of green at its center revealed eyes that his own instantly narrowed upon, and her demanding nature of her posture instantly irritated him, making him straighten to the full height his own lanky body offered.

Lyris cocked her head at the male, one ridge above her left eye where an eyebrow would have been raising in question at his defensive sneer. Clearly, she had caught him off guard, as this was the usual response for one that was startled- aggression. And very well, too. It was smart to be wary and ready to attack if the newcomer was meaning harm or deadly. Lyris was anything but deadly. That would change soon, though.

The girl had to restrain a laugh at the words that flowed from his muzzle- ah, that accent. It was just silly to her, something out of an old western film for humans- is that what they were called, humans? She thought so. But this would just agitate Leonidas more, and she didn’t want trouble. She just wanted to talk, as the boredom of not having another being to talk to during her journey was already creeping upon her. She was curious, also. Was this another one of those so-called loners? She had only met one other, and he had been less than friendly, inflicting her wound which would eventually lead to her Luperci transformation. Perhaps this wolf would be more courteous? There had been no attack so far, so that was a good start. And he seemed more well-put together than the other savage loner- who had been only looking for food. The Luxe owned a horse and the works.

Lyris crossed her arms under her breast, long silver hair flowing into her face with the breeze. Ticked off, she angrily brushed it back, having half a mind to just lop it off. She wasn’t used to having these wild locks around her- she was accustomed to running free on Lupus paws. How did all of the others stand it? Her mind back on the conversation at hand, the girl took one more step forward, narrowing her eyes to two chips of icy green. “What’s your name?” Lyris knew, of course, she was unlikely to get an answer. But might as well try, eh?

Leonidas was taken aback by her forwardness, usually the brusque routine sufficed in convincing others to keep their distance - at best, he had expected her to walk away in a huff, or at the very least no question him. Everyones always askin' for a name. He personally found his worthless, the only thing that kept him from changing is was that he liked the fact that it could be shortened to Leon. The last name he'd have happily done without; a wraith without a home, the empty scent hanging on his flesh already marked him as a nobody, surname or not.

She was a pretty thing, a white that Leonidas had never seen before, though he hadn't really encountered many canines at all during his short lifetime, and had interacted with more scents of others than he had the actual person. He didn't know them though, or know her, and it made him impossibly unsure about his own safety. The conflicting desire and need for interaction with his own species made him bolder, and bony feet remained firmly planted in the snow, he declining his natural urge to storm away and flee. The slick line of lips grew tighter at the edge of rounded corners, and his flimsy ears were pressed further to his skull.

Females in general made him uncomfortable, as he felt some pressure under the unspoken law of doghood not to hassle them unless it was for sex or food; or at least that was the impression he got from other males on how to handle women. At the sight of her, hands on hips and green not shirking from his challenge he quickly determined that he was interested in making an attempt at neither. His eyes narrowed in turn, and a growl of frustration brooded in his throat, only to peter away when he made a return to speech.

"Why d'ya need to know?" The mans drawling bark was kept curt, snow whispered beneath his feet his feet as they shifted momentarily, and slender arms were crossed in a sudden determined movement. "I think its customary to give a name before gettin' one anyway." He added to his past comment matter-of factly. It could hardly be said that he was well versed in manners, but he could pretend, and maybe make her as uneasy as he felt internally.

OOC :: Lol she likes making him mad. ;p

Almost every canine she ever encountered had been larger or more capable than her, so she had been wary, cautious, and on the defense. But Leonidas- not that he wasn't strong or anything, everybody had their hidden talents- but they seemed almost equal in physical strength. Tall and thin, not exactly muscular, but more bony- she could see he wasn't one for brawls. But once again, she couldn't completely judge him- for all Lyris knew, the Luxe could know how to kill another with his bare hands in 106 different ways. Sigh- you could never be certain, could you? It was odd, even though she should have been more cautious, but she wasn't. She was at ease, and in fact trying to get information from him. Perhaps she was... experimenting, trying new ways to talk or look nonchalant. The girl could easily tell that she was hitting some nerves, as his ears were falling back even further and his voice was tight. Ah, well, most seemed irritated with her anyways. Not much of a surprise there.

The Acknowledged continued to raise the ridge above her rightmost eye, the scar on her face moving fluidly along with her muscles. How she hated that scar. Sighing in almost exasperation, the girl flicked her tail, letting it sway behind her. "Well, maybe because I'd like to call you something else other than 'that guy.' But if that's okay with you, that guy, that's okay with me." Bright eyes wandering from Leonidas, they settled with an interest on his mare. Without asking permission, Lyris dropped her arms and strolled over to the horse, careful not to touch her in fear of sparking the male's anger, but instead circling the girl slowly before coming to a stop at her head. "Nice mare. You okay with telling me her name?" She asked, a slight touch of sarcasm tainting her words. "Oh yeah, and I'm Lyris, by the way."

The man eyed her skeptical look with a similar look of skepticism, his expression etched by hard lines and stonily set upon his face. He was uncomfortable, teetering delicately on the verge of being upset (like a young boy in the body of a man), but even with his simple understanding of things, the male knew that the situation was still fairly at ease. When she sighed he wasn't sure if that ease had been increased or slightly shattered, and the grip of crossed arms was tightened by tensing shoulders and biceps. The fact that she spoke failed to make him any more comfortable, but he trusted that, at least for the moment, things wouldn't escalate further.

The opening of his mouth to reply would probably change that though. With a snort of derision to mask the weakness of him folding in to her questions, he gave in. "Fine, the name's Leon since ya seem t'need to know it so badly." An exaggeration, but he didn't care, and had no intentions of giving up his name without hassling her about it in the process. His long face remained stony and displeased, eyes growing even harder as he watched her move towards the horse. Arms still crossed, an awkward sideways shuffle of his lanky legs slid him easily to the mares side.

The massive steed merely lifted her head to the dusty brown mop of his wild hair, nibbling on the dogs wrinkled ear in a complete lack of concern for the situation before lowering it again to nose through the snow. Leonidas was not so unruffled by the near presence of the other luperci. "She's not some trinket to be played with, so don't you come near her." He warned in muted tones, his lips beginning to curl further, lips on the brink of lifting into a snarl. Nyneve was one of the few creatures he cared for, possibly the only creature that held some form of sentimental value for the male. Too protective and easily set on the defense, he was reluctant to let her be touched by a stranger.

OOC ::

Lyris had always wanted a horse. She wanted a companion, a friend, somebody that was always there no matter what you did. The horse that she had secretly named in her pack's stables was a good stallion, but she very well knew that he wasn't hers. It depressed her a little bit to see every other wolf she came in contact with either had a majestic bird sitting on their shoulder or a strong equine beneath them. The white girl vowed that one of these days she would find a companion. She was in the beginning stages of learning low speech, and if she wanted to progress further she wouldn't be able to just borrow her alpha's vulture whenever she wanted. She'd have to find one of her own, and she hoped she would know when to do that when the time was right. So Lyris watched the mare, wishing to stroke her and perhaps feed her some grass, though she could very well feel the waves of protectiveness and anger rolling off of the male, and knew that that would only cause tension and trouble.

Leon? Lyris moved her eyes from the horse to the luperci, disbelieving glinting there. A smile tugged at her lips, but she tucked it away, knowing very well that the easily-provoked man wouldn't like that. He was telling the truth, yes, but perhaps just not the whole truth. Ah well, she wouldn't question it, because she could already tell that Leon (whatever) was getting extremely agitated. At his sarcastic remark, Lyris straightened her spine, her attention on the equine moving fully to the canine before her. "Look, Leon- I didn't come looking for trouble. I'm not harming her or anything else, and I don't plan too. The rest is up to you." She growled, completely and entirely irritated. Man, who knotted his panties in a wad? Lyris wasn't going to try anymore. She found his eyes, her own glimmering deeply with a question and somewhat of a dare. And then, she sat down, folding her legs in a criss-cross. She was leaving herself open. If he wanted to attack, he could. She wouldn't be surprised if he did. She was conducting a test, and experiment- was he all bark and no bite? Or was it the other way around?

It seemed the woman would respect his wishes; he was glad, for besides glowering and baring his fangs, he had no real plan on how to protect his horse from simply being petted. The ridge of one brow lifted in skepticism, and rather than softening the expression, a look of confusion was redrawn the stony lines on his face. He watched in silence as she promptly lowered her bottom to the ground, the male at a loss for word and action. Was this how conversations always went? What was he supposed to do now? He couldn't very well leave; the place was one of the few that seemed to yield some greenery for the mare, and more importantly, it would wound his manly pride to back down from this situation. Leonidas hadn't forgotten being called pretty.

With an agitated 'hrrmph' grumbling in his throat, the lanky male refortified the defenses of crossed arms and unwavering stare, the look of skepticism not fading from his face as he observed her stance in a dry tone. "Yer ass'll freeze off if you sit like that too long." A smug assurance simmering in his husky baritone. He doubted of course that she'd be foolish enough to sit there long enough for that to occur, but who knew? Maybe she would sit through in the cold just to prove a point against him, the female certainly seemed to have a stubbornness about her.

He at the very least wanted to emphasize her discomfort, thinking that by talking her out of it, he would earn a 'win' to add to his own personal little scorechart. And then he spoke again "Are ya normally this stubborn? Not too healthy a lifestyle if ya go ploppin' down in front of strangers." Though his tone was riddled with a similar content, Leonidas was genuinely curious - he had met so few, and had such an undeveloped idea of what was normal. He was learning not to completely trust his instincts though, as they had an odd habit of landing him in trouble were there wouldn't have been any. For instance, the fact that they had driven him to seek out others of his kind, and made him yearn simply to be with others and effectively go against his closed off personality.

Branching out had nearly been physically painful in the past, but he was learning to interact with others, albeit with some heavy doses of hostility. Leonidas had no desire to become sly in dealing with others though, and regardless of how his conversational skills improved, he refused change his manner just to improve a chat. As spiteful as his tone may have seemed, he bore her no ill will, merely responding to the confusion of the unknown in the only way he knew how - with a stern eye and an abundance of frowning.

OOC ::

And the dog goes ‘woof!’ All bark, no bite.

Lyris gave something of a hybrid between a snort and a harrumph, her predictions clearly correct. As Leonidas crossed his arms in what looked like something satisfied, the girl was good enough at reading people to see deep in his eyes he was hiding his relief behind his victorious smirk. He figured that if he just talked enough crap she would back down, tail between her legs. Well, this man had another thing coming. You’re not the only one with words, buddy.

Lyris rolled her eyes, crossing her own arms beneath her chest in an imitation of his sassy posture. ”I suppose I would, but thankfully my butt is covered in fur.” She snorted, raising a finger to flick a long piece of silver chalice hair back into its rightful place down her back. Again with the freaking hair, if only she could train it to sit, stay, and rollover. Irritation clearly showed in her cross-legged pose, her eyes dark and her back straight, but no fear or confusion if he would lash out was present. Lyris had seen enough to figure that Leonidas thought he was just some tough top-notch guy who strutted around on his horse and figured he could scare anybody who got in his way with a few menacing words. It was her turn to smirk as he continued with his sassy language, informing her that what she was doing was irrational. ”I only sit down in front of the ones who are too scared to do anything about it and prove a point to me. If it bothers you that much I suppose I should stand again, though I see no difference.” She promptly retorted, returning to her full height. The girl brushed away a few clumps of snow that had clung to her haunches, flicking her tail and relieving it of some flaky white snow. A soft sigh brushing her throat, the girl returned her arms to their crossed position, a mirror image of the luperci before her. Blinking, she tipped her head, narrowing her eyes a bit. There was something else there, something in the man’s speech that caught her attention. There was a very faint touch of uncertainty in his words- no, it wasn’t that he was uncertain of Lyris, he was quite sure that he was getting the upper hand of her (though obviously he wasn't). It was more uncertainty of how he was going about it. The girl couldn’t put her finger right on the mark, but she had a small suspicion of why the man was being such a butt. Unlinking her forearms, Lyris set them on her hips, though not sternly as she did before. It was more of just a place to put them at the moment. ”You know, you’re not going to make many friends if you act like a jerk to everyone you meet. Trust me, I know. And it’s not fun once you’re walking through that forest and find there’s nobody that really wants to be with you.” She spoke, the ridge above her eyes closest to her scar raising in a bit of a question, and somewhat of a curious manner.
