In their ashes we found our profits

[CdM Sheep Roundup]

Refer to the newspost for a bit more detail, but we are rallying up 6 sheep. No posting order.

She had visited Krokar in the midst of her pregnancy and nothing had given away the way the pack was going to end. It was a bittersweet trip to see what they could gather of the fallen pack, especially as they had been eager and keen to develop a trade deal with them. It felt so ironic that they were coming to collect what they could that would have been the backbone of a trade alliance of sorts. Kalypso knew it was hardly her fault, but it was hard to ignore the smell of scorched wood and earth.

Grimly, she separated from Paloma and her group of horse wranglers, taking the three who volunteered to gather sheep with their Queen. Home was well guarded by the old golden warrior and her fighter sister. They were not so weak, not anymore, and had no worry that such a large group of them were absent. The profits were far and beyond worth the chance they took.

The trio that came with her were not old blood Courtiers. They were all new, mostly. Tora was perhaps the most veteran of the three, but Kalypso knew that meant nothing.

We're looking for sheep, or any other valuable livestock. Let's be respectful of the people that used to live here, she added as a warning against looting, even if she would have done it to a pack she had not known well. Kalypso turned from the trio, and started heading in the direction of where she remembered the livestock had been held in her visit to the fishermen's domain.

It wasn't long, though, before the signs of damage and escaped animals was evident. Wool caught on branches, prints, scents. Kalypso jerked her chin and freed her Courtiers to start their searches.

It had taken a lot of convincing to get the girls to clamber out of his saddlebags and returned to the house.

A lot.

In fact, it had taken pleading, begging, threatening (completely ignored, mind you) and finally bribery before the Dane had been able to swing his child free saddlebags up onto the horse's back. Even then Riddle and Harley had tumbled around eagerly underfoot until they were shepherded away by the older two and presumably returned back to either Moon or Keylo. He knew which one it would likely be... Moon Moon, while a loving mother, was more often than not better suited to dealing with things that weren't small children who needed constant supervision.

By the time the group had gotten to what had formerly been Krokar, Mads was glad to have had such a spirited morning, because what his senses were currently taking in was anything but. The Dane leant back against his mount's broad croup, sighing and regrettably, taking in a deep breath that smelt and tasted like ash and smoke. Their pit stop was brief, and Kalypso made to move on and soon after, gave them the sign to depart from each other's company.

Tora had calmly followed the group the remains of Krokar, they grey wolf always ready and willing to assist his adopted pack in any way he could. A day spent rounding up sheep had sounded enjoyable enough to him, if not especially relaxing. He had always liked animals and some of his favorite chores as a pup had been tending to his family's livestock.

He was unprepared for the sight of the ruined packlands. The burnt wood, trampled earth, spots were plant life had been trampled in the commotion, it all reminded him of home. Tora didn't know anything about the now disbanded pack or how it fell apart but it was all so familiar to him, another pack destroyed and its survivors scattered to the wind.

All he could do was nod absentmindedly as the Queen laid out the rules. Looting had never even crossed his mind. It would dishonorable to spit on the memory of a once sovereign pack. Rubbing idly at the ten tally marks forever scarred into his arm he raised his nose to the sky and sniffed, already catching a whiff of sheep scent.

The others agreed in silence to respect her wishes. They had no choice but she also felt that they agreed with the sentiment she had laid out so solemnly. She had begun diplomatic talks with the pack whose land lay ruined and abandoned. The scent of fire and ash was thick in the air, though the heat and flame was long gone to the whims of wind and weather. Kalypso did not know what it was like to see her home burn, but she had seen enough storms go through the island to understand the devastation that the loss could cause.

Kalypso watched Tora sniff the air. She, too, raised her head to smell for that livestock scent, turning into the breeze. There, beneath the soot, was the smell of sheep. Faint but new and nearby. I think we smell them, she said, calling out to the rest. She turned in the direction of the smell, pausing only to secure the borrowed mount for a moment. It would not do to have to round up her own horse afterward.

Toward the sheep they went quietly. The air was stifling somehow, despite the late autumn chill in the air. It didn’t seem very fresh but horribly stale. The taste of ash lingered in her mouth as they progressed to where she remembered the animals being pastured. At least, she thought that was where they had been. It had been months since her previous visit and the ruins were difficult to navigate accurately.

A handful of sheep grazed in land not marked by soot, ripping up the last of the grass that survived the frosts that November had brought them. Their side-slant eyes looked up now and again, staring at the gaggle of canines that had come to collect them. They did not seem bothered by the presence but they were clearly used to their captors enough to return to grazing serenely.

Kalypso turned to the group, unsure. Who has experience with the sheep? What should we do? Corral them? Sheep wrangling was hardly her specialty.

Tora hadn't been entirely sure that it had been sheep he was smelling. Some type of animal, definityl, and a group of them but he could guarantee that they were the flock the small group was searching for. His old pack had had small herds of sheep but Tora never spent much time around them, preferring a life of training and sparring to one of herding livestock. He was glad that someone else had caught the scent underneath that of smoke and ash, Kalypso corroborating his guest in front of the others.

He stalked the abandoned flock silently, moving slowly so as to avoid attracting attention. His pace was steady, footpaws carefully guided around sticks and burnt pieces of housing. He was again reminded of home, the burning of his pack's houses and people, the destruction of everything they had. He had sailed for so long to escape it all, only to encounter the same sadness in his new home. "What happened here?" he whispered quietly, almost to himself.

He paused as soon as the group made it to the area that remained unmarked by fire and soot, blue eyes focused on their objective. They had found the sheep, now what were they supposed to do? Evidently the sheep were used to canines, paying the gaggle of wolves almost no attention before focusing back on their meal. Tora considered the Queen's question, thinking back to the brief time he had spent with the shepherds back home. He remembered that they usually used their Lupus or Ortus forms to herd their flocks, running about on four legs barking snarling. He could vaguely remember that the best shepherd was one of those rare non-Luperci, a quick little sheepdog that had a knack for guiding his flock to where they needed to go.

"Perhaps we should switch forms?" he suggested. "We could get on all fours and start chasing them back home."
