I have often dreamed

Dated May 7th

Avalon's prow split the waters swiftly, aided by a fastidious wind that pushed them much faster that might have been expected. He could see Risa, a lonely figure upon the shore that awaited his return. The heavy loch winds buffeted the two of them, Kira and he, unprotected from its blustery fingers. His hair whipped around, he brushed it from his eyes several times in vain.

The leather expanse of his armor groaned as he leaned against the edge of the ship, studiously watching as Avalon came in to dock. The trip had been both a success and a failure in equal measures. In all truth he had never expected to succeed at the one particular task.

His hand rested upon the young woman's shoulder, fingers squeezing gently in solidarity.

Together they departed down the gangplank, for once Honrin not caring to help unload his gifts and results of his other trades. He could see to that later.

"Risa." He greeted his son with a fragile smile, an arm about his shoulders. The light had gone from inside, Honrin could see this too, and as much as he tried, there was not a way he could reignite such a thing. It would be up to Risa to move on, or not.

It was all he could do to attempt to shield the youth from their own follies. He was too old of a man to be making the same mistakes again and again and yet, here he was.

Synapse to synapse
The possibility's thin

He was lost. A boat in the middle of the ocean, drifting in the seemingly endless current; navigator, dead. There was no better way to describe the feeling, especially as Risa stared blankly at the great empty sea, palming smooth stones in the flat of his hand and casting them over the water with a flick of his wrist. He imagined himself out there, somewhere far away, tumbling in the deep. All stones sank to the bottom eventually.

She was gone. Luca had said so. There was no bringing Quinn back, but Risa couldn't bring himself to move forward. He wallowed in it, blaming himself for a dire mistake.

The Avalon pulled into port. The gangplank came down upon the dock and Honrin and Kira returned from whence they came. Sunken, sleepless eyes watched as they made their way down the dock. He met Honrin's gaze and knew his father would come to join him on the shore. Kira followed close behind.

His father's arm slipped around his shoulder. "Hey Dad. Hey Kira," spoke Risa, attempting to smile as he palmed another flat stone. There was pain in his voice, something he couldn't hide from one who knew him as well as Honrin.

Oh, tears make kaleidoscopes in your eyes
And hurt, I know you're hurting, but so am I
And love, if your wings are broken
Borrow mine so yours can open too

Kira had never ridden on the Avalon before. It had taken her probably an hour or a little more to get her sea legs, but she had not been seasick, a fact that she was grateful for. She was sick enough at her stomach as it was. She could not see the Fort yet, but she knew it was not far off. She would usually have been so excited to get home, to show off what she had gotten and tell of what she had done but...

Quinn was gone. No, not gone; dead. Kira had railed against it for over a week after Honrin told her, and even now she was not sure she really believed it. It didn't feel real. Kira had not felt anything urging her to go home, no impulse that something had happened. Surely if Quinn was in trouble she would have felt something; Kira had always been responsible for Quinn and had a knack for knowing when she needed her. Once she'd begun to accept it she also began to beat herself up. Maybe if she had just stayed home...

Kira had spent most of the ride below decks, standing with her new horse, Cresum; now she shifted, went topside to stand beside Honrin. He placed a hand on her shoulder, squeezed, and she had to bite her lip not to sob again. The wind whipped her hair around despite the twine that held it in a tail at the base of her neck, and she knew it would be a tangled mess later. The shore came into view and on it stood Risa, a lone figure in the sand, his shoulders bent with grief. Not long after, Avalon docked and she and the Lionheart disembarked together, unencumbered by physical goods.

The taller white male put his arm around his son's shoulders; Kira went a step further and wrapped both arms around his waist, burying her face in his chest and holding her breath between inhale and exhale, trying not to cry. Hot tears threatened at the corners of her eyes anyway and at least once sobs shook her frame. None of them would be the same again.

Kira too joined into the hug and for a long moment they simply were. Loss was always hard, but it was hardest on those who were young and had no such experiences to draw from in their own strength. Honrin could lean back on coping mechanisms and diversions of the mind that he had long cultivated, the two younger wolves were having to develop them all new.

Letting them linger in misery was not at the top of his list however. Cautiously he began to steer them away from the port. Maybe they could sit down in the Courthouse together and have some warm cider or, tea, and just, have themselves a nice talk.

The sea washed against the shore, the sounds of the screaming gulls filled in the background. Honrin engulfed both youths in his broad arm span and began to shepherd them away.

Beyond the gull calls, a lone voice rang out, almost lost within the furious screeching.

Honrin could be forgiven for not hearing it, the edges of his auditory spectrum were beginning to wane with his age. Focus was spent upon his son and Kira.

It was Kira who pulled away though, ears turning before her body and before Honrin could even say a word she was screaming, loud in his ear and then she was gone, off running down the beach. Risa followed a heartbeat later, leaving Honrin stood alone for a brief moment.

His jaw worked with no words, against all odds...

She looked worse for wear, limping and leaning heavily upon her stick-crutch.

But she was alive...

For a moment in time, Kira discounted what she was hearing as another piece of the cacophony of the shoreline. With so many birds screaming, the sound of the water, the crew of the Avalon yelling across the ship at one another, it was hard to believe it could be anything else. Nothing else made sense, after all; they were the only three on the sand. Then Kira let one large ear twist, to hone in on the outlying sound and suddenly it popped into focus: the sound of her sister screaming her name.

She ducked, letting Honrin’s arm pass over her head, and stared for a long moment down the beach. At first she saw nothing, and then a dark-furred limping figure came into view with a stick braced under one armpit. Dark red ears retreated into her hair and she yelped, Quinn!! her tone somewhere between excited and questioning. How could this be? Everybody had thought her dead, how could it possibly be that she was standing watching her hobble down the beach?

She decided not to ask. Hesitating only a moment, Kira launched herself down the beach, digging her toes deep into the sand for stability. She could sense Risa just behind; without slowing both canines bowled into Quinn, tackling her to the silicon below. Kira’s tongue lapped out indiscriminately, with no care for whether she was licking Risa or Quinn,Mirthful laughter rolled from her belly, and the knot of stress there had begun to untangle itself now that the Damaichu knew her sister lived.

When the laughter had abated slightly Kira rolled off her sister to sit in the warm sand, and just stared at her, absolutely hornswoggled (but relieved and definitely not in a position to complain!) by her reappearance. She ought to defer to Honrin, but she could not and the question erupted from her throat all at once. Quinn, what happened?
