fast and furious

Always be back before dark.

The words rang in Odalis’ ears as she made her way along the twisting pathways that lead her from the garden to the tower where she lived. The space seemed so much smaller with Clementine acting as Elphaba’s ward. The young girl had eyes that seemed to watch everything and Odalis warned Dogmeat from straying too close.

The basket that she carried with her bounced against her hip and was filled with flowers that she and Dogmeat had collected together. There were blooms that she had picked specifically for their color, and already she could imagine how she would arrange them on the tiny shelves she had built for herself.

Elphaba would be upset that the fires weren't lit. She always wanted the tower to be scalding.

The shadows had deepened faster than she was used to and so she walked hurriedly – gathering her sweater in her hands when it got caught on a ferocious bramble.

She hadn't set out to follow the servant at first.

The jackal was most active in shadowed dusk, when her dark pelt bled into the forest's macabre palette and her eyes glinted like firelight. She did not patrol with the discipline of a Vedetto or Milite, for she had taken no jobs, but she nonetheless stalked through the woods at late hours looking for trouble. It was not unusual in Salsola, of course; with occultists and dedicated predators in their ranks, many welcomed the night.

But there were a few—like her wife, who rose with the sun to tend to her little herd—that leaned toward the light.

Khael idly walked one of the footworn pathways, bored and expressionless, when movement and scent caught her attention: the hurried tread of someone who didn't want to be out too late, and an aroma of flowers wrapped up in a likewise sweet scent. Her nostrils flared and her pupils dilated in the dim light, and she smoothly followed, her small feet making hardly a sound.

When she stepped out into Odalis' path, the Warden was equally silent.

The basket beat a rhythm against her hip until it didn't. She cursed under her breath when she felt her sweater tear, the ripping sound filling the pillowy silence that had descended upon the pathway. "Mierde," She finally managed, holding the piece of torn sweater between her fingers.

She was surprised when she began again down the path that the forest had gone silent and it was as if the ruins watched her pass.

Odalis made a sound when a figure stepped out of the shadows before her - the large jackal ears twitching as the light caught at the fiery orange of her eyes. The womans appearance had the Onubans core go solid, a wedge of ice bleeding up between her ribs. A sharp sound escaped her teeth and she dropped the basket, spilling flowers all across the path.

"Warden." Odalis finally managed, dropping to her knees to begin collecting the flowers frantically.

Her hands shook against the night.

The doggish girl startled at Khael's manifestation, and the basket tumbled, spilling golden petals like coins across the ground, marigold and kingdevil and sorrel. Quickly, Odalis knelt down and picked the flowers up again. Her hands trembled, and there was that faint waft of fear from her that curled Khael's tongue.

"Let me help you with that," said the Warden, crouching down before Odalis and gathering some of the blossoms in her own dark hands.

She assisted in silence, her eyes focused on each twirl of yellow, until the basket was full of color once again. Then, deliberately, she placed her hand on the rim of the woven container and lifted her gaze to Odalis again.

Khael stepped towards her silently, and Odalis could never know for sure what it was about the jackal that set her teeth on edge. The trembling in her hands ceased the moment they wrapped around a golden flower and quickly she gathered as many as she could reach from her kneeling position. Her knees hurt against the stone and she could feel the Warden gaze like fire creeping along her shoulders. Her ruined sweater fell to expose the curve of one thin shoulder, and hastily she moved to pull it back up.

"Thank you."

The offer to help made her click her teeth but she was surprised to find that when she tugged on the basket to draw it back up with her that it did not move. She was reminded of the way that the womans hands had felt around her wrists, how she had held her against the dirt and stared at her with eyes that had been too wide with fire even then.

Without thinking Odalis growled softly, "What do you want?"

"What do you think I want?"

Her voice, carrying with it traces of sand and the Nile, was soft and almost casual—as if she were asking Odalis her opinion on crops rather than Khael's own inner machinations. Small shifts in her face belied this, however. As little as the jackal emoted, there were hints as to her internal state: the minute shift of her pupils toward that bare shoulder, a brief bulge in her cheek as her tongue traced along her teeth, and the faintest of smiles as her ears swiveled toward the girl expectantly.

Many things about Khael would put you in mind of a cat, but her tendency to play with her food was chief among these.

"Please." The incline of her head was almost polite, though her clawed fingers continued to hook over the basket's edge. "I want to hear it from your mouth."

Her voice rippled like sand and Odalis felt herself go hot – the sort of seeping heat that came from laying in the sun too long. She hissed through her teeth, giving another futile tug on the basket that refused to move from beneath the jackal’s fingers. Everything about the woman's stance made the dogs fur stand on end, the sharp edges of her shoulders rising like mountain peaks beneath the silvery moonlight.

When the jackal peeled back her teeth Odalis could see the slick sheen of where her tongue had run its course, her expression frightening and hungry.

Odalis tugged on the basket again, wincing as a fleshy flower petal tore beneath her claws.

When she tipped her head the Wardens face was closer than she remembered.

Fear gave way to something else, and Odalis felt her pupils dilate against the dark. Her blind eye reflected trees and twitching leaves - the other one shone with the fire in the jackals expression.

When she spoke it was with a chin jutted out against the world. ”Me.”

Khael laughed.

It was a terrible sound that did not match the rest of her: sleek, cold. It was a little too loud and put one in mind of a lioness' rasp, and it showed too many teeth, larger than other jackals' teeth and glistening with saliva.

Her hand moved, lifting from the basket to lay atop the once-soft hand (ruined now by work like digging, how disappointing) that fought to pull the basket free. She stared into the girl's eyes, her pupils swallowing up those pretty blues, and studied the way her chin thrust forward with the last dregs of defiance.

"You," the jackal chuckled, like it was such a terribly funny concept, "you."

She leaned forward and lapped her hot tongue over the other's shorter, softer muzzle, just a single stroke from her whiskers' edge to her stop. Her nose paused near the roots of her chestnut hair where it began to take on its fiery sheen, and she inhaled there.

There was space between them again just as quickly, as Khael rose to her feet and stared down at the girl with a brow cocked; she rather liked the sight of her knelt there.

Images bled into each other until her body felt warm in the night.

"You're going to make someone angry one of these days, little girl."

The heat of the woman’s tongue had Odalis flinching.

It seared along her skin like a crackling blister, the first kiss that Odalis had felt since Salvador. The name rung hollowly now – a name from a lifetime ago, from a time spent meandering in dirty hovels bursting with color. Khael had ignited something dangerous and uncertain, an ember caught against kindling that burned too bright.

The growl that erupted in the girl was angry and she wiped at her nose when the jackal finally let go of her hand and turned into the night.

Her expression was indignant but lit from within as she began to gather her forgotten flowers to shove hastily into the basket.

When she looked up the jackal was gone.
