They shared in each other's triumphs and sorrows, and they ran on their endless echoing. Black and White, they mirrored each other in their similar but different ways. To be without any of his family was unthinkable to Temnota, but to live without his Brother was a devastation that would surely tear the world asunder. It could not happen, it would be like... like... the rain no longer tumbling from the skies or the wind not blowing, it would be the sun crashing into the earth and the moon falling into the oceans.
It would be his own death, as much as this was a concept he could barely grasp.
The idea of Nana Jace being wrong was so abhorrent that Tem shook his head violently back and forth until his still kind of soft ears flopped wildly.
"Я не знаю, бабушка говорит зеленый."
He laughed, childishly high, of course Mama would like rabbit, everyone liked rabbit. It seemed such a silly question now.
"Может быть позже" He nodded, knowing that Father was likely out training. Tem and Push always had New Things to tell their father, never mind that the old patriarch likely already knew these things himself. Hearing it from the mouths of his children always softened the lines at the corners of their Papa's eyes.
His tail began to wag too as Pushok put forwards his own question, the rabbits had run away but that didn't mean they couldn't find them again! They were Hushhowls! Brave, and strong and kind and fearless, that's what Dusk and Dawn and Day and Night said!
Tem leaped up and barked excitedly,
"Да, мы можем! Держу пари, она тоже! Может быть, она смотрит сейчас, и она хочет, чтобы мы поймали одного для отца!
He threw back his head and let out a reedy, high pitched howl. It warbled and wavered but it was his and he was proud of it! They were gonna hunt!
There was never much silence for long, Tem's world was too full of color and noise. Either self created or via another medium, something would always come along to wrench him from the strange coldness.
It wasn't like the bright blue-white snow that made his paws tingle, it came from inside; How Отец would stare with a frown at the moon, how his sisters looked at each other when they thought he wasn't looking, the strange pain that he felt when Ma Veri set her eyes upon him.
But here came Pushok, bounding through the snow towards him. Temnota's face split into a wide smile and just like that the strange quiet was forgotten.
"Брат!" The two calls were mirrored, echoes of each other. They rolled over in the mud and snow until Pushok was as dirty as Temnota who had been digging a hole.
"Просто копать. Я почувствовал запах кролика, но они убежали." Temnota pouted in the way only children could do at this revelation, considering his messily dug hole.
"Бабушка Джейс говорит, что весной их много, но я не знаю..." Tem still wasn't sure if he believed in the idea of spring. His experience was snow and grey clouds and cold but Nana Jace wouldn't lie.
Tem looked up at the overcast sky that threatened to snow again. Temnota had seen enough snow in his life he thought to be able to tell when it would come again. He huffed out a sigh and pawed at the ground. He wanted to be big, he wanted the future to be Now.
"Как вы думаете, мама любила кроликов?" It was a childish question, but it suddenly seemed so important that he know the answer to it. He looked at Pushok, who was so similar but so different. The differences were as familiar as their similarities. Tem knew exactly where the black and white mixed together on his Brother's pelt.
He still wasn't quite so sure, it seemed to him that it might still be a lie and the cold would stay and the snow keep intermittently falling.
Temnota still remained as a four legged beast whilst his brother cavorted about like the other adults, upright and tall. Again he couldn't help but wonder when it would happen to him. He had been assured, by many others, that it would happen because both his Papa and Mama had been able to stand tall too. So that meant that he could as well, sometime, some day.
Tem trotted through the slushy, muddy snow that covered the cobbles in the entrance to the Fort.
Everyone was busy, no one much had time for the young boy who managed to find his way into the way constantly. He even managed to almost get under the hooves of Callum's horse, as the large male rode out for some reason or another.
So, loping quickly, Tem moved away from the main hub of activity, padding his way into the desolate gardens.
As always, it was very difficult to imagine something he had no experience in.
He stopped, caught short in his movements. What was that?
Tem trotted over to the thing that had caught his eyes, sticking out against the dreary background. It was small, and shaped like when Papa cupped his hands together. He sniffed at it, it smelled like... fresh? That didn't make sense?
The darkling boy sat and tilted his head at this aberration, he whined, deep in his throat, his tail slipping slowly against the needle strewn ground.
Crunchy footsteps behind him made his head turn, and a hand descended to brush against his crown. Tall Honrin was smiling down at him,
"That's a leaf, Temnota. Gonna be a while lot of them around here soon Little Brother. Spring's almost here."
It exploded as a violent fizzing in his chest, he looked at the green thing, the leaf and suddenly compared it to the crunchy things he sometimes found. It looked the same kind of, but different colors.
His mouth opened, eyes turning up to Honrin and for long seconds it worked with no sound,
"ПУШОК!!!!" The boy's loud voice, pitched and warbled, cracking.
His paws were scrabbling against the frozen earth, and, not even acknowledging Honrin, Tem was racing through the Fort screaming for his brother. Pushok just HAD TO come and see this!
