Kamari’s cornflower blue eyes roved over the various faces present that night, observing their expressions, their interactions, and their body language. It was an easy—and amusing—way to pass the time, to watch others and imagine what conversation was to be had between the involved parties. Some were more content with their chosen company, others more interested in their drink, and a few took full advantage of the feast provided. Hand gestures, drifting eyes, laughter and loud conversation. The Feasting Hall was full of activity and a low din of voices and noise.

While perhaps not as grand as some of the previous weddings—apparently, Morgana had wanted things just so—the reception dinner was still nice. The food was good, and the decorations were pretty and chosen well. If she had been in charge of her own reception, Kamari decided she would have rather liked the simpler appeal that Morgana and Brocade’s boasted. She had never been much for great grandeur, though, she understood the significance of why hers and Krios’ had been done as it had been.

Thinking of her husband, her eyes slid to the man beside her. Though perhaps expected of his rank, House, and the occasion, Krios had dressed nicely—handsomely, even—for his uncle’s wedding.

Kamari herself had dressed in one of her finer, high-collared tunics. It was a muted, saturated green with lighter accents to follow the tunic’s hems and edges. It dipped at her throat, plunging down to her stomach. Three fastens ensured that it preserved her modesty; simple bone toggles with chord ties. The bottom half of the tunic was cut and layered in a way that allowed a greater range of movement, as well as having a distinct portion to cover her front and backside. It was short-sleeved due to the warmer weather, though, even with the spring temperatures, Kamari still wore a pair of dark pants. And, even though at a ceremonial meal, the Kaiser still had one of her knives perched in the small of her back. Her scent that night was light, smelling of pine, river water, and a hint of lavender.

Her lips curled in a small, secretive smirk as she leaned in close to the Striker, her words low and full of humor. “Well? Is this better than the Saturnalia party?”

It had taken far longer than ever expected to get Brocade and Morgana married. Granted, Krios had figured his uncle would have ended up in a hasty last-minute mateship to give some credibility to whatever unfortunate woman ended up as the mother of his offspring. It was all figured in good humor and mostly in jest with maybe a little bit of actual honesty. So - all in all - it was much better than expected.

The wedding was not like his and Kamari's but there was far less coercion and sadness for the festivities. Brocade did not mind the spotlight and Morgana did not seem to, either. Kamari had not been a fan of the eyes on her and the fuss, and Krios had felt the absence of his mother keenly. Now, it was a genuine festivity, if somewhat more subdued than he expected. Morgana was far more moderate in her tastes and Brocade probably just agreed to it all. Why fight the wife, after all?

Kamari would probably have kicked him hard in the shins if had said it aloud to her.

In the year and a half since his marriage, his tastes had simplified and matured. Kamari's influence had likely tempered his aesthetics. If anything, her outfit was grander than his own. The dark fabric was clean and well-fitted to his torso, accented by more moderate stitching. His scent was mostly his own with rosemary and mint thrown in from the herb water he had cleansed his hair with.

Beside him, Kamari snickered quietly to him. Their height difference was comical as always but diminished when seated. She leaned against him and her touch made his arm warm. Krios chuckled. "Well, you're here." It would have been a great segue into a terrible joke, insult, or sarcasm. "But yes, I think so. I'm glad that Morgana is a better decorator than Brocade, though." He laughed as he reached for the well-watered wine he drank at those events to keep up appearances without getting completely blitzed.

The music wafted through the hall and the faint change in tempo made him perk up. A few of the confidence pairs danced, and Krios could not just ignore that. He nudged Kamari with an elbow. "Will you tolerate me for a dance or two?" He gave her a crooked smile.

She scoffed lightly, shaking her head and rolling her eyes to his simple explanation. Krios had been alone during the feast that had been long overdue for Saturnalia. Kamari herself had been away on business, helping escort a trading caravan to Portland. Without her though, the Revlis son had apparently not been able to enjoy the festivities of that night. It’d been a bit disheartening—as she had forgotten that Krios was more withdrawn from the others in the Kingdom than she—and she had promised to make it up to him during the pack’s next grand meal.

It was for a Last Supper that she’d promised, but, she supposed, Brocade’s wedding was good enough. Kamari was in good spirits. She was happy for the Director, and the air felt much more lighthearted than the somber mood of her own or the tense formality and quest for prestige that had been felt with the Greygriefs’ union or even Kaeli’s.

When Krios made a passing comment about Morgana’s tastes, Kamari snickered, her sharp eyes sneaking a glance at the newlyweds. “Can you imagine what this hall would look like?” Her gaze shifted to the pretty blooms, vines, and colored cloth that had been carefully arranged and placed around the Hall. “It’d probably look more like the barracks than a wedding reception.” She hid her laughter behind the back of her hand, her head angled to Krios as if their conversation were supposed to be secret. “There’d certainly be more booze.”

Brocade had always been a man who loved enjoyed a good time, and what better way to make others let loose too than putting them into a light buzz?

The music changed, and Kamari would have paid it little mind had Krios not nudged her. She looked at him, the laughter and mirth from her face just moments prior disappearing from her face at his question and smile. Something caught in her chest, and the Shadow found her eyes leaving him in favor of the table and the dining ware and food that decorated it still. Her breath came out in an airy, uncharacteristically shy chuckle. “Krios...I…”

I don’t know how, she wanted to say. Even at their own wedding, she had avoided it out of embarrassment and nervousness while in the public eye of others. She knew it was a flimsy excuse though.

She had promised that she would make things up to him.

“…One,” she finally agreed with a shallow nod and nervous edge to her voice. Closing her eyes, she nodded a bit more firmly, taking in a calming breath. “As long as you go slow,” she stipulated, looking at him out of the corner of her eye. She didn’t want to make a fool out of herself the one time she stepped out of her comfort zone.

Krios had to snort. It was easy to throw petty jabs at the man's distinct lack of decorative skills, but that was not something Brocade was ever going to care much about. Krios had more of an interest in it than Brocade, and that was probably saying something.

"If I know anything, it would have been outside and very casual. Very 'Brocade'." Krios waved his hand in front of him as he said his uncle's name. It would have been more of a casual celebration more suited for an overly bountiful hunt or excellent weather than a wedding but it would have suited the man. It did give the Striker some thoughts, though, about a summer event that was nothing like a Last Supper and far more friendly. Or as friendly as a Salsolan anything could get. Brocade would certainly love the idea of it.

Yet, it was not the light mockery of his uncle that made his evening a pleasure. His tail waved ever so slightly behind him - like an eager child - as he watched almost hungrily for Kamari's response. He knew that it was likely going to be a back and forth battle that would include cajoling, puppy eyes, pleas, and favors.

Except, it was not. Krios actually found his jaw dropping ever so slightly as he blinked at Kamari. He knew what he heard, but did he actually hear what he heard? He had, hadn't he? Kamari agreed without so much as a fuss, even if the terms were by no means fair to Krios. Well, no, they were more than generous because she had agreed.

He looked at her for a moment, as if trying to figure out when a spirit possessed his wife. No, not likely. She was all Kamari and it left him somewhat confused, concerned, and pleased; he was easily pleased.

"Kamaaaari," he drawled as he took her hand in his and started pulling her toward the open space, beaming as though he wanted to signal to the moon. "It's not a fast song anyway." Kamari likely could not dance; she was not the most feminine female he had ever met. But not knowing something had never stopped him before. "And I never said I could either," he added with a laugh. He could dance, but that was really neither here nor there.

He took her arms and hummed thoughtfully for a split second. The height difference was so wild. At least she came up to his shoulders so it wasn't too dramatic. Resigned, he put her hand in appropriate spot on his waist for a waltz and respectfully placed his own on her waist. He leaned (or more like leaned over his upper body) and whispered in her ear, "Just follow my lead and move your feet opposite what I do." It was tricky to explain and he had never bothered to teach her, but better late than never.

Looking at him from out of the corner of her eye, she saw his expression shift from eager anticipation to one of astonishment. Immediately, she wondered if she should have denied him instead. Had she been too quick to give into him in her regret of the sadness she had left him with during Saturnalia? Did he mistakenly think her to—gods forbid—be eager to make a fool of herself? Her face suddenly heated and she found herself looking away from him again. Taking another breath, Kamari had prepared an irritated comment to toss at him when she felt his hand reach for one of her own.

She looked up at his rising form immediately.

He gently tugged her to her feet to join him, saying her name, and Kamari’s eyes danced from his face to their hands as he led them away from their place at the feasting table. She felt her heartbeat hasten in her chest as she spared a passing glance to the other Salsolans in the Hall.

What would they think? The Shadow being led out to an open space by her husband while the music played like it did? Brocade would probably tease her with stars in his eyes. Khael would probably bring up that embarrassing topic again about men and their desires. Elphaba—were she not seeming so distracted that evening—might have delighted at her own scheming. And O’Riley…she wasn’t sure what he would think. Maybe that Krios was a fool?

The thought of being seen, of there being attention on her doing something so not “her” made the Emissary even more uneasy as Krios brought them to a stop.

It would just be one dance though. A deep breath. Yes, just one. With the reception being about Brocade and Morgana, and with so much food and drink to be had, the most she and Krios might get would be a stray glance. With any luck, everyone would drink enough wine and ale that night that they’d think it nothing but a figment of their inebriated mind in the morn.

Her eyes sharply found Krios again when he claimed that he couldn’t dance either. “Then why did you—?!” Her hissed words died on her viperous tongue when he touched her arms and hummed in a considering way. She was in unfamiliar territory, and her body stiffened, her eyes watching him warily like she might a foreign foe.

It took only a beat for him to adjust one of her hands, placing it on his tapered waist. And then another for him to mirror their stance, placing his hand on her own waist.

It shouldn’t have bothered her, shouldn’t have made tingles spread from his contact through her tunic, shouldn’t have made her spine suddenly feel so rigid and muscles tight. But, it did. Perhaps it was their closeness, perhaps it was the context. They weren’t sparring. They weren’t out on a mission. The contact wasn’t made for survival, wasn’t made in the heat of the moment to protect each other’s backs.

No, it was deliberate. They were safe here, aside from the many eyes of their packmates.

So focused on the new placement of their hands, she hadn’t registered Krios leaning into her until his hot breath tickled her ear. She took in a sharp, sudden breath, blinking up and stubbornly staring at his chest as she forced her thoughts to refocus.

It was just one dance. A deep breath. Just one.

It would be no different than learning something else new. She could adapt. It was one of her specialties as the Kingdom’s Shadow.

She just had to ignore the rapid beat of the muscle inside her breast and the heat that fanned her cheeks.

“Lead on,” she said.

Kamari felt like a rigid board in his grasp. Honestly, he was contented to accept her decidedly absent love for him outside of friendship, but he was not going to suffer through a dance with a glorified combat dummy. He gave her a gentle shake to try and get that rigidness out of her spine, laughing as he did so. "Relax, I'm not going to fling you into a table," he chided, clicking his tongue at her.

She was so much lighter than he and felt so insubstantial in his arms. But she was warm and willingly letting him touch her waist so casually and purposefully. It was a moment to savor. When would he ever get another chance to feel her beneath his hands, innocently even?

If he did not know better, he would have thought her nervous. Perhaps she was, honestly. She was not made for the center of attention and he had led them both out to be under the easy gaze of anyone capable of opening their eyes and looking up. She stared at his chest, as though instructions might appear on his shirt. He rolled his eyes at the timid and stiff display.

"I'm going to make you dance with me at home until you know how to tango in your sleep if you keep looking like this is a punishment," he joked, though it was tinted with a bit of hurt. Was it so bad to dance with him? He asked so little of her and she knew that he had a right to ask and some would have expected him to take what he wanted from his wife.

He shook her gently, laughing as he pointed out how rigid she was. It was enough to help break the spiraling anxiety that had tightly gripped her. Kamari let out a breathy, embarrassed laugh of her own, her eyes falling further down his chest as she shook her head. “Sorry, I’m a bit out of my element here.”

These sorts of courtly activities had never appealed to her, much less, been something she had any expertise in. She worked better with outwitting riffraff and the like, of fighting and killing enemies of the Thistle Crown, of being stealthy and unseen. Dancing close with a friend, where other reception-goers could see? It made her suddenly self-conscious of her every action.

Kamari’s tall ears twitched at the joke—and she was not so out of her thoughts to miss the words that went unspoken—and her eyes, finally, rose up to meet his face. “I think I might have preferred the practice run, actually,” she chuckled, hoping he would not think her rigidness and nervousness had anything to do with him. Any Salsolan should have been honored to dance with the Revlis son, bastard or not. He was handsome and with a rich bloodline, confident and well-versed with the luxuries that came with being upper class. He a skilled archer and scout, the best that the Kingdom had to offer.

By comparison, she was a street urchin still trying to prove she could hold her head high and fit in amongst the other nobles and royalty of the Kingdom.

Taking a breath, she squeezed his hand, being sure to look up at him with as much nervous confidence as she could muster in that moment. “Just…lead on. I’ll do my best to not step on your toes.”

Kamari finally managed a laugh. It took her long enough, though she still looked like an uncomfortable giraffe among unicorns.

"Oh, you're out of your element? Just pretend. It's what we all do," he whispered to her, grinning as he lowered his head to her ear so that the caress of his broad, sweeping accusations did not reach the people who most likely would not care for that assessment. No matter how accurate it was, too. He straightened, still grinning as though he had whispered something delicate and seductive into his wife's ear. He even winked at her without looking once at the crowd.

"Next time, then," he promised - threatened? - with an ever-so-slight incline of his head. Krios was falling further and further from the graces of his heritage, lagging behind those whose blood was less blue. He had lost his motivation for the most part, but was glad for any excuse where it was socially permitted to put his hands on his wife, even if she felt like a limp straw doll.

Kamari's squeeze at his hand made his tighten protectively over her fingers, wondering how much of the confidence in her gaze was nothing more than bravado.

Krios laughed. "Step on them if you want. Maybe I'll do something to deserve it," he said with a waggle of his brows. The music was hardly demure but it was no fast paced, breath-stealing number. His hands pushed and applied pressure when he needed her to move, his hand tugging slightly in the direction they would go. If she stepped on his feet, he said nothing, merely hummed discordantly to the song.

It was somewhat of a shame she was so much smaller, since it would have been nice to lean over and mutter actual sweet nothings into her ear.

"Even so out of place, you are so beautiful, you know?" he praised, sighing as though in jealousy. But he was not jealous. At least, not at that moment. It was nice, really. Even if she hid her femininity he could still see it and feel it.
