Optime | The Arena; mid-morning (+569)

Friendly spar between Shield-mates and nudging. Let me know if you want me to change anything!

The day was fairer than most might have been for the season. Despite the cloud coverage that gave the world a greyish hue, they were thin enough that the daylight hours did not feel miserably gloomy. A frosty wind twirled every so often, picking up speed when moving across open land. It carried remnants of fall in its wake, displacing a decaying leaf here and there as it coaxed them from where ever they had collected before the first snow fall. It was not a pretty winter morning, but, at the very least, it was not wrought with inclement weather or utterly depressing either.

It was as good of a day as any of a spar.

Kamari was perched atop one of the arena’s walls, patiently waiting for her company to arrive. She had kept her usual cloak wrapped around her in the meantime. The added layer of material helped cut out the wind when it blew through the area. As well, it helped keep her still figure warm. Beneath this outer layer, Kamari had put on clothing that was both acceptable for her style of fighting and as well as for the time of year. A loose, long-sleeve jerkin covered her upper torso, accompanied by a pair of loose, simple, dark-colored pants. A pair of furred bracers covered her arms, acting as both armor and as an insulator for warmth.

Of weaponry, Kamari was without. For the bout, she had wanted to focus more on hand-to-hand. While she was by no means lacking in the fighting style, of their choices, it was the one that would put the two of them on roughly level ground, and the easiest to get a good work out in without having to fuss about shredded clothing or otherwise. Perhaps, on a warmer day, they could bring out their weapons of choice upon one another.

With an opponent like Idrieus, a duel with her rapier against Kamari’s knife would have been a definite challenge.

Strange, it was, to think that, only a year prior, Kamari had been leagues below the esteemed Paladin, a greenhorn taking pointers and advice from a veteran. The Shadow was a far cry from the inexperienced youth she had once been though. Practice and lessons under the ex-Jaegermeister’s tutelage had honed her innate talents, and further teachings under Velimir had allowed them to only continue to grow and prosper.

A year ago, she would have never thought that she would have had what it took to stand within the same Faction tier as Idrieus.

Still, even with many months of vigorous training, Kamari was not so foolish to believe that she could stand on the same level as the Eternity woman. Idrieus had had a few years on the Emissary, no doubt, with many times the experience as well. Even so, Kamari would do her best to prove that she was worthy to be one of the Shield.

The soft crunch of snow reached her large ears. The Shadow turned to acknowledge the source, cornflower blue eyes finding the blonde wolfdog to be who had arrived. “Paladin,” Kamari greeted, jumping off the wall with a cat-like ease. She pulled her hood down so that her face was more clearly visible. “Thank you for agreeing to spar with me today.” She bowed her head a bit in both respect and gratitude.

Training was an absolute necessity when it came to being a member of the Shield Tier. The most basic training in how to protect one's self should be shared to all of those that lived in the kingdom, making sure that they were ready, whether it be from an attack within the kingdom itself, or if they became overrun by their enemies, or even found themselves on the battle field. They were strong when they stood together, but having that knowledge would keep each one of them safe, and not allow themselves to be viewed as weak.

The Paladin was quick to agree to Kamari's spar, even her condition of focusing more on hand to hand combat as opposed to their weapons. In truth, she could use more practice in this form of fighting, as she had become rather relient on the rapier she always carried around with her. She had to be prepared for the occasion that she may lose it in the heat of battle or it something were to happen that caused it to break.

Besides, it was better for her mentality to take a break from her focus on Brocade to spend time on other members of the Shield Tier. Kamari and Krios had done well for themselves to make it this far, and she should not be the one to sour anything between them.

The dog woman appeared at the training grounds, leather wraps around her wrists being the only thing she needed. How nice it was to be blessed with such a thick fur coat to battle the winter season. It must have been terrible for a woman like Kamari, short furred like her mother. There was more of Abeni in her after all from what the dog woman could see.

Bowing her head to the jackal woman, she spoke with more respect than she had offered even to some of those above her, "Emissary. The pleasure is mine. A chance to train and practice is something that I will not turn down. Shall we?" Her feet carried her over to the entrance gate of the ring, waiting for her opponent to step inside with her.

Sorry this is so short after such a long wait @___@

Did some mild PP to get the spar started, hope that was okay! I’ll have Kamari start the “casual” talk in my next round! Feel free to PP them hitting/dodging/etc. to keep the thread moving!

Kamari’s style is quick, acrobatic, and evasive, with her hits being aimed more with precision to key points to disable than for power behind them.

Kamari nodded, her hands coming up to undo the clasp that held her cloak closed. The form-distorting item would have only hampered her abilities to fight the Paladin. The loose fabric would have been easy for Idrieus to take advantage of. She could have grabbed it, could have stepped on it, could have used it to even choke Kamari if she had wanted to. Though it might have been good practice to try to overcome these feats, Kamari was more interested in her combat skills in general. Perhaps another day. She somehow doubted the Paladin would decline another bout, if her words were anything to go by.

The Emissary pulled the material off of her and draped it over a nearby fence. Cold air washed over her form with the cloak no longer providing an extra layer. It caused a brief chill to race down her spine, but the jackal hybrid shook it off. While she could feel the bite of winter linger on her jerkin, she knew it would be only a matter of time before it left her. Once they got to moving and got their blood pumping, she’d be warmed up, and she wouldn’t have any need of her cloak.

She paced over to where Idrieus stood in the middle of the ring and placed herself across from her. She made a fist with one hand and pressed it into the palm of her other before offering a shallow bow from the waist. It was a habit learned from her spars and lessons with Velimir, something that came without thought after so many sessions beneath him. She dropped into a fighting stance then; feet spread, knees bent, hips angled, and arms up.

A nod was given to confirm her and Idrieus’ readiness, and the spar began.

Kamari decided to get right down to it rather than wait to see who would move first. She rushed forward, a hooking punch aimed for where she thought the dog woman’s ribs ended.

It felt a bit strange to say the least.. having come here without her weapon. The rapier was never far from the woman's side, be it if she was just wandering around Salsola or if she was taking care of some of her duties. Of course, she was open to using other weapons or even doing spars like this one, but even she thought to bring along her primary weapon on the off chance that she might have need of it.

That was a foolish move on her part.

Even so, the Paladin stepped into the ring, taking to her spot at the center since there was nothing of her own to shed. There were many in the kingdom who chose to wear clothing, be it on a daily basis or when the weather grew cold. For someone like Kamari, it made sense. Her short fur would not fair well in a climate like this one without some kind of protection. Even so.. it could be used against an opponent, especially in close combat.

Best to not put herself to that risk.

The Emissary soon joined her at the center, eyes focused on her opponent. Though seeing no need to match her own gesture, Idrieus' own head bowed to the other woman, hands moving up to be ready for what may come next.

The jackal was quick to act, pushing herself forward and coming with a hooking punch for her side. It was interesting to see her take the first move, but then again, the Paladin would have waited to see the what the other woman would do, try and get a read on her movements. This meant she would have to make a fast move.

One arm moved down to intercept the incoming arm. With any luck, it would be enough to at least push the fist away from her side. This didn't put her in the best position however. Unless she made some kind of a turn, her body was going to be exposed. Turning her posture to face the blocked arm, the Paladin brought up her own fist, aiming more for Kamari's open upper body. It wasn't anywhere that would prove to be vital or cause for much damage, but enough to at least get a hit in should it land.

Since this is before the Shield dinner, figured this would be a good way for them to casually work their way into talk about Grievous?

Idrieus’ taller height and thicker build would put her at an advantage of sorts, Kamari knew. Her reach would be longer, her strikes, harder. Vita spots like her face or throat would require some creative thinking on Kamari’s part to reach them without being blocked or thwarted off beforehand. The Shadow had dealt with larger opponents before, one of which that would have made the Paladin look “small.” It wasn’t really the size that mattered though, it was how the dog woman used these advantages.

To Kamari’s testing punch, the Eternity deflected it with her forearm, making a downward, sweeping motion that shifted the power and momentum behind the first attack off to the side, where it struck nothing more than air. In the same motion, she twisted to follow the movement of Kamari’s body, her own hand coming down to offer a counter attack. The Emissary sensed the movement and jerked backwards, though, she could feel the tops of the Idrieus’ knuckles tug a bit on the lose material of the jerkin.

It was a good thing that she was fast and agile, Kamari thanked. Elsewise, it would have been an embarrassment on her part to get a tag on the Paladin’s first hit. One of the Kingdom’s elite fighters, and taking a hard hit within the first second of the bout? Even while younger and less experienced, Kamari didn’t want to give Idrieus any reason to doubt her capabilities.

In the same motion that she jerked her upper body backwards, she twisted, following the motion of her deflected forearm. She swooped downward, her leg gaining speed as she brought it around. Her hands planted in the snow, and she swung out with her foot, aiming to shake the Paladin’s foundation from behind her knees.

“Have you heard that the Director has been looking for new recruits to the Shield?” Kamari asked. They were there for a spar, a test on their skills while not actually going all out. The Shadow figured that they might as well conversate while they were out there alone.

Idrieus had very little reason to doubt the Emissary's skills, though it would do no harm to test them out to see how they were fair since her time making it into the Shield Tier. It was the males she was far more concerned with... just as she always was. In her time with the young jackal, even on that incident when they were investigating with one another, she had seen just what the 'Shadow' could do, and only had high hopes for her more.

She had also been there to see just he kind of moral code the Paladin held herself to. It was something that often made her feel... out of place.

Their spar had begun, and the dog woman kept herself sturdy and focused. She had done well to take care of her opponent's first attack, though it seemed that she had not been able to do the same in return. Her own attempt had proven to miss, though it was good to the jackal's credit. Her body was built to take more of a beating while someone like Kamari would be foolish not to take advantage of their own speed.

The Emissary was soon out of harm's way, though she had not left without making some other attempt on getting the upper hand on the Paladin. Her leg had come behind her, an attempt to knock her off balance before getting some distance. Clever.

She felt the foot collide with the back of her knees, and even with the tension she had put in them, it was enough to make her stance fall out of balance. Her body shifted, trying to regain her balance. She had to be quick if she was going to get her own attempt off back on her. With a move like that, she was going to be in a position that wasn't too favorable. Idrieus paced forward, picking up speed as she came closer and closer, her foot reaching forward for the jackal's own body.

Though they were sparring, a conversation had started. Though that blue gaze never left Kamari, she gave a reply, "I don't pay much attention to him, though if that is the case then I know of one person to mention to him."

Sorry for the wait @___@ My muse for February was pretty absent.

Made a slight PP to keep the thread flowing, lemme know if you want me to change it! Feel free to move Kamari around in your post if it helps it flow better!

Her counter connected, her lower leg colliding with the back of Idrieus’ knees and causing a bend in the dog’s stance. With any other, untrained Luperci, they might have buckled, fallen, crashed unceremoniously to the snow-covered ground from the action. Being on the shorter side, being able to get her opponents to the ground benefited the jackal hybrid greatly. It made larger opponents more manageable and easier to kill.

The dog before her was trained though, skilled and named Paladin because of her wide array of battle knowledge. While her foundation was shaken, it was not beaten, nor was it destroyed. Idrieus took advantage of the low stance Kamari had had to take to make her stance buckle slightly. She reached out with a foot aiming to either chase off her smaller attacker or kick her away. Sensing this, the Shadow leapt away in a roll that brought her back to her feet.

It was just in time, as the Paladin did not pause in her onslaught. Kamari held her hands up, blocking a blow that would have otherwise sent her with her head spinning.

“Is that so?” She asked, grunting from the power behind the taller woman’s strike. “I can think of a couple,” Kamari continued, not wanting to let the flow of the dialogue fall flat, “Kaeli Blacksun is strong and proficient, for one.” There was another she had in mind, but, she wanted to give Idrieus a chance to share her opinions before she mentioned the other. “Who have you noticed?”

A long time of fighting had hardened the woman to become what she was today, and it was her own desire to see to teaching the other members of Salsola no matter which type of combat wanted to be learned. Of course, she was better at some more than others, but knowing the basics was enough to get someone started, even if to pass them off to someone else in the Shield Tier to finish up their training or for some other means. She had well earned her place long before anyone else in the Shield Tier had come to join her.

Though this spar was proving well to show why Kamari was placed well as the Emissary.

She was fast, as any good spy would need to be whether it meant getting out of a tough situation or moving around to get whatever it was they needed. Her movements were quick, each one serving its own purpose before she gave herself some distance. It was enough to get away from the Paladin's initial attack before she made a quick follow up, another that had been blocked by Kamari's arms.

The conversation came up again, as was expected, "There is no denying Kaeli's strength, though her age should be something to take into consideration as well as her drive." The dog woman backed up this time, pacing slowly around with her opponent, "Shaamah was the one I was going to bring up. More than once he has expressed interest in the Shield Tier, to be its new Guardian in fact."

Feeling that enough of a break had been made, the Paladin kept her slow pace before breaking out into something quicker. With any luck, it would be able to throw the smaller woman off guard enough for her to make a move that wouldn't be blocked or dodged. Her arm came up first, a strike aimed for the woman's center. Her other hand came out as the intended block came, grabbing at her wrist to have free movement over where Kamari's arm would be before making another strike.

FINALLY got to the Grievous part XDD

“True, she is much older than any of us,” Kamari hummed as Idrieus stepped away from her. “With age comes experience, though, so too, does it more readily welcome death.” The words reminded her of something Velimir would say. Though, they were true. Bones would become brittle. Reactions would become slower. Hearing would become deafened. Eyesight would become blurred. Strength would dwindle. And one’s health became more fragile. Time was, unfortunately, something they could not fight.

Kamari kept her hands up as Idrieus circled her, ready for the taller woman’s next move. As she circled, she offered up her mention. It was a man Kamari had had little personal interaction with; Shaamah. He was an individual covered in scars, and was yet another Salsolan that had been recruited by Helena. He seemed intelligent, and had been respectful enough at Kamari’s wedding reception. Where Kamari’s relationship with the man was rather small, it appeared that he had at least impressed the Paladin, which said a lot about what promise he had in him.

“Guardian? Seems fitting. I think his size and features alone would make most Luperci think twice about crossing him.”

Idrieus moved then, her body coiling as she raised an arm in preparation of a strike. Kamari bounced backwards, raising an arm as she went to deflect the punch. However, it played right into the Paladin’s trap. Her small wrist was caught by the Eternity’s larger hand, something that Kamari hadn’t accounted for. With it captive and controlled by Idrieus’ stronger power, Kamari was left defenseless to the second strike.

Try as Kamari might to absorb the blow, it still knocked the wind from her lungs as Idrieus’ fist hit her sternum. The Shadow stumbled backwards from the blow, gasping as she hastily willing her body to be back under her control again. Before the dog woman could make a third punch, Kamari ducked and twisted inward towards Idrieus’ person before moving outward. With any luck, the action would force Idrieus to break her hold on Kamari’s wrist, as to follow the movement would have twisted her arm backwards.

“The ex-Paladin’s son, Grievous,” Kamari coughed, trying to relieve that tight feeling in the center of her chest that Idrieus’ fist had caused. “He would be my other recommendation. Vati says that he’s built like his father, and, even as a teen, fought bravely against the Boreas invaders.”

Idrieus did not dare take her eyes off her opponent. Though she had been a member of the shield tier longer, and at least knew a fair amount of basics for many types of fighting styles, there was still very much that she could learn from the other members within Salsola. The Emissary, even the two males she was not fond of, were skilled in their own right, and could up her in certain skills...

Much to her dismay.

Blue gaze narrowed to the jackal woman's comment. There was no denying that Shaamah had the size and could easily intimidate someone with his looks alone, but then again that was not all it took. There were far too many of their enemies who would even dare stand up to someone like him, stupid enough to think they could take him even though they did not have the advantage. Her head shook gently, "Never underestimate the stupidity of Outsiders. There are many that just don't want to listen or save their own hides. My concern is whether he will restrain himself if the case my call for it with a look like he has."

She had always believed, even if stupid in practice, that Outsiders be given a chance to leave before they were attacked. Some level of honor being offered to them and make the smart decision before they began to regret it. Would the beast be able to do the same or perhaps follow some of the others in the Shield Tier to attack on sight?

The Paladin had been pleased to see that her plan had paid off, landing a hit on the Emissary. She wasn't without making her own counterattack though. The jackal lowered herself, pushing herself in before moving back. She had managed to free herself from the dog woman, but she was going to be back with another move soon enough.

Pacing as the other woman recovered from the blow, she figured the mention of Grievous would have come up. He fought along her side on numerous occasions when they were on the battlefield. Arms moved up, bracing herself for Kamari to come again before she spoke, "Your Vati would be correct in that notion. There is no doubt in Grievous' combat skills; however, he has since chosen to focus on another path that is not the Shield. I support his choice. There will be plenty of other blood to bring into our own ranks."
