dream beneath the golden sun

Myra was sick, she was feeling so miserable. Her head hurt, her body ached, her nose was dry and starting to crack, and she felt dizzy which apparently was because she had a fever. She hated being sick. It was her first time and she wasn’t even allowed to get up or anything. Groaning she looked out at the grey sky wondering what monster had caused this thing to make her whole body hurt so.

She’d even been separated from her family! She couldn’t cuddle with her mom, or feel safe in the arms of her father. They did come to check on her, but she still felt better when they were all huddled in their big ball of fur during the nights. The one good thing was Pumpkin was at her side purring. She wasn’t sick but she kept Myra company, telling her what was going on, little things like the movement of the rats she was hunting, or even the horses, how they were faring. They seemed to be getting sick too. Not all of them, but a few. She worried about Snowdrop, and hoped the poor horse wouldn’t get sick like she was. She wouldn’t wish this on anyone.

Myra’s dry tongue licked at her nose and she frowned. She’d emptied her water a few minutes ago. Looking around, she wondered if she could get up and get a fresh cup, but sitting up made the orange tabby jump up on her chest ‘No, you need to lay down. I’ll find someone.’ She said and left the room to look for anyone who could give Myra a cup of water. Myra let herself stay down, feeling the little pressure the kitten had pressed down on her as though it was now a real weight that she couldn’t get off her chest.

Optime (+684)

Part of Spring Sickness plot.

Things had been…off since the rains had started a few days earlier. The world was uncomfortably warm in spite of the wet weather, and there were few times that Teagan could recall of a day being much like the last…four had. The wolfdog generally liked the rain and the normal calm that was brought with it. This though? It did nothing but make her irritable. She felt downright miserable in her own skin! The constant, wet feeling on her fur? The unusual warmth that was the beginning of spring? The only place she could escape it was down in the belly of the Courthouse.

Teagan was not one to skirt from her duties or hide because she was uncomfortable though. She had things to do, training to be done! The wet, muggy weather just made it more irritating to work in.

She’d been in the stables gearing her stallion, Apollo, up for a patrol. There was a strange…sickness going around as of late. The Bracciante’s astute nature had observed that much. Some of the livestock had acted sickly, most noticeable being the horses since Teagan often found herself in their presence. Thankfully, the birds had shown little to no change in their behavior, but, then again, from what her grandmother had told her, they often didn’t until it was too late.

Keeping her horse outside of the barn as much as possible was a precaution that came to mind, and Teagan was all too willing to find whatever chance she could get.

Apollo snorted, alerting Teagan that someone—or something—had entered the open barn. Turning to look over her shoulder, she saw a small kitten making a beeline towards her and the large horse. Pumpkin? It was her younger sister’s cat companion, she recognized.

“Teagan!” The kitten mewed loudly.

Hearing the urgency in the cat’s voice, the Stryder turned fully towards her. Curious, Apollo watched, lowering his head to get a better look at the feline as it stretched up Teagan’s leg, doing well to keep her claws retracted in spite of her insistent pawing to get the Cavalier’s attention. “What’s wrong? Where’s Myra?” Teagan asked gruffly, her canary eyes flicking to the stable’s door in search of the runt. She’d known the Garcia to have fallen under the weather, but, last she’d seen and heard of her, it had been nothing to fuss about.

“She needs water!” The orange-furred feline informed her urgently before scampering off to the stable door.

Teagan remained where she was, giving the cat a skeptical look. “Can’t she get it herself?”

“I wouldn’t be here if she could!” Pumpkin hissed, turning around. “We need to hurry!”

“Alright! Hold on! Let me put Apollo back.” Teagan barked after the hasty tabby. Thankfully, he hadn’t been fitted with anything, so, all she needed to do was put him back in his stall. With the stallion put away, Teagan grabbed a pale and filled it with fresh water before following after Pumpkin to the family home.

The feline went around the back to what was likely an open window. Teagan let out an irritable sigh. With a full bucket of water in hand, she was better off just using the front door. She didn’t bother to knock or announce herself. She was family, after all. And, besides, if the cat had run all the way to get her, that surely meant that there wasn’t someone more capable already at the house.

Her canary eyes swept over the living room, finding it bare of any form of life. From the looks of things, the boys were living out on the couches. It meant that her sister was likely in Teagan and Indi’s old bedroom. She heard mewing from the opposite side of the closed door, confirming her assumption. Making her way over the bedroom, she turned the knob and invited herself in.

“Myra?” Teagan’s canary eyes swept the room for her younger sister. “Pumpkin said you needed water.”

dream beneath the golden sun

Myra wasn’t sure if Pumpkin was getting anyone, it was taking her so long. She felt miserable and her throat was dry. If the cat didn’t get back in thirty minutes Myra was going to get out of bed and just drink the rain or something. She was absolutely miserable and didn’t know exactly what was going on still. She knew she was sick now, sicker than she has ever been, but still knew little of what to expect.

Only a few minutes had passed since she made her proclamation to herself about Pumpkins return and it felt like the allotted thirty minutes. She was sitting up and felt another dizzy spell. The fever hadn’t gotten better at all and it was making her feel as though things were spinning but she was determined to get up. Yet as she managed to move her already aching body and get her feet on the floor, the door opened and Taegan was standing in the doorway.

Blinking, not sure if she was asleep or not, she wasn’t sure what was going on when her older sister spoke. Myra looked at her with glassy eyes and nodded as though she was on a string and someone was bobbing her head up and down with it. “Please?” She asked quietly. “I was going to get some, I thought…” She started coughing and she looked away from her sister hating that she looked like a little weakling, but could do little about it. She let herself sit down fully on the bed, but she didn’t feel comfortable laying again with Taegan in the room with her. Not just yet. She swayed a little, unaware of it as she got her emptied cup. But instead of handing it to Taegan she looked at is as though she had forgotten what she was doing with it. Pumpkin jumped on Myra’s bed and lay at the foot of it watching them with a worried look on her face and watched the two girls interact quietly.

Perfectly fine<333

Inside the room, she found her sister in what looked to be in the midst of trying to unsteadily balance on her own two feet. For a moment, the taller sibling just stared at the smaller. Her canary eyes took in the physical state of Myra. It was obvious that the runt was clearly not her usual self. Her coat had a dull shine to it. Her eyes lack their mischievous luster. Her body itself reacted much too slowly to Teagan’s presence there. She was definitely sick, and much more so than she had previously been.

The Garcia’s words were quiet when she spoke, and her cough was concerning when combined with everything Teagan had seen thus far. As Myra began to sit down, the Stryder finally moved. She shut the door softly behind her and moved to her sister’s side. Her sister swayed where she sat, holding her empty cup. It was like she was on autopilot or in some sort of half-awake stupor. Either way, the sickness had clearly fogged the girl’s actions.

Teagan set down the water pale by the night stand, well within reach for the Garcia if she’d need to quench her thirst later. Gently, she tried to pry the cup from her sister’s grasp. “You look much worse than when I last saw you,” she commented, “Besides the cough, what else is wrong?” From that, Teagan would judge if Morty would need to be called. The Bracciante was no doctor, but, one didn’t need to have medical experience to know if a healer needed to be called.

Myra was the smallest of the siblings, as well, one of the younger Luperci in Casa di Cavalieri. The odds were stacked against her if what was going around was some sort of serious illness and not just a common cold.

dream beneath the golden sun

Myra’s head turned to her sister. She had always had a passive face ever since Myra knew her, so the worried look made Myra almost want to panic, but there was no energy for it. Questions did slur through her baking head, though they were jumbled to hers and later she wouldn’t really remember them nor would she be able to voice them out now.

She did comprehend her sister's words and she nodded; “I feel worse.” She admitted when she felt she had control of her coughing. The next question came, and Myra was slow to react, she put her hand on her forehead, her throat, her chest. She was afraid to really talk or she would have another coughing fit, though she was certain to have to so she spoke when she did. “Dizzy, breathing hard,” She held her belly, “My belly feels…” It was a description she couldn’t really exactly give out, as she never felt this kind of feeling before. It hurt but not in the painful way.

Her hand let go as it felt the pressure from her sister taking the cup out of her hand, not quickly at first, but it loosened and she let it slide out of her hand. She looked down at the pale her sister put at her feet and for an instant just wanted to curl up next to the bucket and just lap at it. Yet she waited, because she knew if she did she’d feel worse. She was doing her best just to stay up so she could drink.

Sorry for the wait! >_____<

The answer she received regarding Myra’s condition confirmed that the small child was likely feeling as bad as she looked. It was concerning, particularly given the other facts about the illness and its victims thus far around the Fort. Myra was both young and small. The chicks came to mind, and the thought of losing something—someone that was actually close to her was a bit unsettling. Losing Jonas had been tragic…but, this…this was her sister, her own flesh and blood, even emotionally distanced as they may be.

Myra went on to explain her other symptoms as Teagan had asked. Her reactions were sluggish and delayed, and nothing she listed was anything the older sister could help her with. Teagan’s lips formed a thin line as she processed her younger sibling’s words, trying to figure out a solution to help her or a possible explanation for it all. The illness though, it was all that came to mind. The one that was affecting everyone, and had taken the lives of some of their livestock.

She did well to school her thoughts from reaching the surface though. It would do no good to frighten the clearly sick child. “Are you hungry?” She asked softly when the mention of Myra’s belly was brought up. Teagan was trying to keep the atmosphere between them calm, but, there were certain bits she felt were necessary to know. Her canary eyes turned onto Pumpkin, “When was the last time she ate?” Knowing it was hard for Myra to breath, any questions that could be answered by the feline would be asked. If the runt hadn’t eaten in a while, it would explain why she might have been so weak. A body couldn’t function if it didn’t have anything to fuel it.

With the cup surrendered, Teagan filled it halfway for her sister, not wanting to give her too much in case she spilled it. The Bracciante held the cup with one hand and, with the other, gently moved Myra’s hands to grasp it in her own. She maintained control over it, wanting to make sure the cool liquid within got into Myra’s body and not onto the bed or floor. “Drink it slowly. If you need more, I’ll refill it.”

dream beneath the golden sun

Her sister, the one who never showed so much emotion kept asking her more questions. It was making her a little scared but there was still that feeling her sister was still acting like … well Teagan that made Myra stay quiet. She cringed at the mention of food and shook her head. Her belly ached at the thought of it. Then shrugged at the question after. Pumpkin was looking at Myra and then back at Teagan ‘She ate the day before last, but that was when she started bringing it up.’ The cat said, she was trying to be as calm as Teagan though the worry in the cat's body was palpable. Myra did not notice it though thankfully to her own good will. The cat was still a kitten herself and had always been thankful for Myra taking her in. She would have been dead if it weren’t for the puppy begging her mother to keep her. It was something the cat couldn’t repay even now when the girl was so weak and Pumpkin felt so helpless.

Teagan filled the cup and helped guide Myra’s hand to her mouth. She thought nothing of this other than to drink. The warning was lost on her though as she tried to gulp it down but ended up coughing and spluttering some of it out. She was able to get a bit in but the thirst brought her back to the cup and she drank more, though a bit more slowly this time and finished what was in the cup. She let herself lay back onto her bed and she smiled at her sister; “Thank you.” She said, though now she felt so tired she was not sure she could keep her eyes open for much longer now that her thirst was sated. She wanted to tell Teagan exactly how thankful she was but her mind couldn’t grasp much of anything but a few words;“Good… sister” As she started drifting off into a deep fevered sleep.

Thanks for the thread<333

Myra’s decline that she was hungry, combined with the feline’s answer, didn’t make Teagan feel much better about the situation. Her little sister not being able to keep anything down—so much so that she didn’t even feel hungry when her stomach was empty—was definitely something Morty or Veri would need to hear about. They couldn’t risk losing the Cavalier, so, some means of getting sustenance down her throat was something to be looked in to.

“I see,” she stated simply, her tone devoid of her true thoughts on the bit of information. Pumpkin seemed to understand that Myra’s inability—and refusal—to eat was something to be concerned about, so, Teagan saw no need to draw any more attention to the direness of the situation at hand. It was better that they not make a scene about it in front of Myra.

Thankfully, it seemed the Garcia was more focused on quenching her thirst than continuing the subject on food. When she coughed, choking on the bit of liquid she had tried to gulp down her throat, Teagan gently chided her, “Tch, I said slowly, Myra.” When she tried again, taking more leisurely sips this time, the Stryder offered a shallow nod in approval. She let Myra drink to her content, finishing off the cup before returning to the comforts of her bed.

Teagan set down the empty cup on a nearby nightstand, making sure it and the bucket of water she had brought were within reach in case the girl needed more later. She caught Myra’s smile out of the corner of her eye, and when she thanked her, Teagan acted indifferent. “Hnn, that’s what I’m here for.” To take care of her little sister.

The Bracciante busied herself with cleaning up her siblings’ room, putting some of the boys’ articles and knickknacks up and out of the way so that their mother wouldn’t be embarrassed when the Medicos came by later to look at Myra—Teagan would make sure they made time in their busy schedule to visit the runt. There wasn’t much to clean, thankfully, as it seemed they had been wise enough to leave their sick littermate alone. On her way out, she pulled the covers over Myra and gave Pumpkin a good scratch behind her ears.

She had only just closed the door too when she heard the faint whisper from her little sister. For a moment, Teagan paused, staring idly at the doorknob in her grasp. A soft, small smile itched at the edges of her lips before the Stryder let go and quietly made her way to the front door. The smile was gone and her eyes were sharp like steel as she entered the rainy, outside world.

She had a mission to do, and a medic to hunt down.
