Optime | Fort Kingsbury (Sparring ring); early evening | cNPC: Mako (+473)

Training thread!

The heat of the day had tapered off a bit as the sun had begun its gradual descent towards the western tree line. A few birds sang out their last songs, providing music to any eating their evening meal. Nightly insects began their chorus as they traded places with the birds of the daylight hours. Even with things beginning the steady transition from day to night, there was plenty of daylight still left, perhaps an hour or two at most.

Teagan leaned patiently with her back against the railing of the training ring. She had specifically finished her duties early that day. Her slew of animal companions had been seen to with their training. Paperwork had been filed into their respective locations in her office. The armory had been inventoried and she had made her notes on what she would be talking to a certain blacksmith about later at dinner. And it was for this particular blacksmith—and another—that Teagan had been sure to be at the training ring at such a time for.

She hadn’t waited long before the First Cadet sauntered up from the direction of the workshops. He brushed off some miniscule pieces of his work in the forge from his fur. He was bare-chested, something that was becoming more and more common as the warmer months progressed. A pair of pants were the only clothes to his person, though, he did carry bracers beneath one of his arms, presumably, to fit them on once he found the time to do so.

He offered the War Lord a smile upon seeing her. “Did you finish everything, M’lady?”

The Stryder raised a lip and a brow, offended, “Did you think I wouldn’t?”

Mako quickly realized his mistake in his question and he sighed defeatedly. Instead of answering her though, he moved beside her, placing one of his leather bracers onto the fence while he fastened the other to his forearm. “What are we doing today?”

Thankfully, she had not been stubborn about getting an answer to her previous question. You’ll be testing out some new wooden shields,” she replied, her canary eyes searching beyond him.

Her answer had Mako curious and worried. “Me?” He looked at her, using his teeth to fasten the tie of his bracer. “What about you?”

I’ll be spectating. Your sparring partner should be here soon,” she replied dismissively.

He let out another sigh. It would be the second time she had signed him up for a spar with someone else. He didn’t mind it—it was better to learn from multiple partners rather than just one all the time, after all—however, a little forewarning wouldn’t have hurt… He moved to apply his second bracer, wordlessly accepting that Teagan would not be his sparring partner that evening.

OOC An image of Veri's raptor sword, for reference. WC/494

A coordinated spar, something she hadn't participated in a while due to her Medicine's Master duties. Spontaneous spars were usually all she could afford; running into a random pack member around the training rings and kindly roping them in.

Now, she prepared for the spar that'd been planned between her and Mako, the newest blacksmith. With her hair braided down her back, she now made certain that each piece of her armor had been tightened down properly so they wouldn't chafe or fall loosely.

Unlike the taller members of her pack, Veri's armor consisted of a lighter leather meant for stealth and agility, while still providing some moderate protection. Her jerkin, bracers, and pants were each closed with laces for a custom, snug fit.

The medic didn't fuss for too long, instead she shifted her focus onto the type of weaponry she'd require. The purpose of this spar would be to test some wooden shields, so while her newly acquired combat staff would be nice to break in, it wouldn't do much against a shield. Veri opted for her trusty raptor sword.

With the blade belted around her waist, she also tied her bowie knife to the belt as a secondary back up option, should she get the chance for a sneak attack or in the event she got disarmed of her sword.

Properly armed, she exited the house and made her way toward the training ring, where she saw Teagan and Mako already waiting for her arrival. She grinned at the blacksmith, the expression kind but with an edge of challenge to it in the way she let her fangs be seen just a little.

"You ready for this Mako? Has Teagan even told you what to expect?" Veri wasn't the best warrior in the pack and she wouldn't dream of claiming such a title, but she wouldn't have climbed to the Valiant tier of Brotherhood if her combat skills were lacking, despite her rank being Master of Medicine.

As she approached, her single gaze slid to that of the newly appointed War Lord, dipping her muzzle respectively in the Stryder's direction. "Pleasure, Teagan, and thanks for setting this up. You intend to observe?" Veri had no argument against the Council member watching their spar; as War Lord, it had now become Teagan's job to make certain all members were combat ready, to remedy it if they were not, and make sure their armory remained properly stocked.

The medic paused at the fence by the male, a hand placed on the hilt of her weapon, all too ready to draw and begin. "Any rules for this spar?" she queried first, glancing between the Cadet and the War Lord for confirmation. Once received, she smiled again and hopped the fence to enter a ready stance. "On your mark, then," she ceded to the male, a spark within her single blue orb.

cNPC: Mako (+756)

Reference for me for how Mako would read from a blacksmith’s view xD

Feel free to PP Mako attacking/defending! He’s not as skilled as Veri or Teagan, so, he’s open to mistakes and such :)

Mako had just managed to tie off his second bracer when he noticed Teagan become more alert and bouncing off of the fence she had been leaning against. He turned, his eyes following where she had been gazing so attentively toward. It was the lead medic, Veri. Teagan had spoken well about the cream-colored female, and, as he eyed the sword and smaller blade sheathed at her sides, he was able to come to the conclusion that she was the one that Teagan had volunteered him to spar against that evening.

He turned, bowing shallowly and politely from the waist towards the older female, Konbanwa, Master Veri.” The blacksmith spared Teagan a glance before he answered the Medicine Master, “Ready as I’ll ever be. M’lady…she uh…told me I’d be the guinea pig for testing some new shields?” He hoped that was all he had been volunteered for that evening. At the very least, his lacking armor and attire weren’t an issue, or else Teagan might have mentioned something…or so he hoped. The woman had a tendency to live by, “on the battlefront…”

“Hello, Veri,” Teagan greeted with a respectful nod to the Secanti before smiling softly toward her, “I’ll be watching, yes. I want to see how well the new shields hold up, and Mako could always use a challenge with new sparring partners.” While Veri may have very well been a medic first, every Cavalier knew how to fight to some degree. Going against Veri would be good for Mako to practice with other combat styles than Teagan’s own.

Veri moved to join them by the fence, and, to her question, Teagan shook her head. She moved to retrieve one of the shields she had propped up against the fence, handing it and a dull axe over to Mako who put them at his feet. “Go all out, Veri. I want to see what abuse the shields can take and how practical they are in combat. If it splits, I’ll call the match and we’ll see about using one of the others.” Her gaze shifted to Mako. “Since I want to see more of how the shields handle, I’d like to see you use the shield more than your axe for the spar.”

He nodded in confirmation as he went about undoing one of his bracers. With using a shield, he wouldn’t be able to properly fit it onto his arm with the bracer also attached. When he was finished, he tossed the abandoned bracer off to the side and scooped up the shield and axe. He grunted as he followed Veri over the fence and into the ring. She had already taken up a stance in the center, waiting for her opponent to stand apart from her.

Mako tested the shield on his arm, adjusting the straps so that the defensive tool would neither be too snug or too loose. His hand on the grip opened and closed around the metal a few times before he was finally satisfied. With his axe secured into his other hand, he spread his feet shoulder width apart and stood side-face. “I’m ready.”

Teagan flicked her gaze to Veri to insure that the Valiant was as well before she barked, “Fight!”

The blacksmith sized up the medic, his eye naturally drawing to the weapons carried on her person. Where one looked to be a typical knife judging from its scabbard, the other was something the Ridley had yet to see. The sword was of a unique design with its cross-guard twisted as it were. The curvature of the blade, too, looked more exotic, particularly with its random points and levels. The design reminded him of eastern ones, something like a saber or a katana.

From his quick assessment, it was likely the blade was used more to slice than it was to bruise and break bone. Still, he was curious to see how this different blade worked. Not wanting to keep Veri waiting—and eager to get started—Mako decided to act first. He charged the Valiant, his axe hand sweeping out to build up the momentum he’d need to wield it down upon his opponent, aiming for her shoulder. He held his shield up with his opposite arm, though, it was moved aside with the motion of his downward swing.

The attack was obvious and easy to dodge, a mere warm up to get the energy moving between them.

OOC Ooo that's a super cool site! :o WC/486

Veri allowed a soft chuckle at Mako's querying tone. "Yes, that's right." she assured, her smile gentling a tad. Teagan returned her greeting and confirmed that she'd be observing to see how the shields fared in their spar. That Mako would experience a different combat style through the Medic would be a benefit for the blacksmith.

To Veri's question she received a shake of the head while the War Lord supplied the male with a shield and blunt axe, which he put as his feet for the moment as he worked at loosening one of his bracers to make room for the straps of the shield. Teagan instructed the Medic to go all out, see what abuse the shields could take. If they split, the spar would be called and other should would be called into play.

She gave a nod of acknowledgement to the Stryder female, relaxing her feet just a little while she waited for Mako to adjust his armor for the shield's straps and enter the ring. He called ready after taking a side-face. Teagan glanced in her direction to ensure she was prepared as well before barking the sharp command to fight.

Mako's eyes began to size her up, lingering especially on the blade at her hip. He seemed interested in its design, but in the midst of a spar couldn't ask of its origins. He opted instead to make neither of them wait too long, charging toward her with a sweeping arc of the axe to bring it down on her shoulder. A warm up move, no doubt.

Veri stealthily sidestepped on his shield side, loosening the loop that secured the scabbard of her weapon to the belt with a deft twist of her fingers so she could draw the entire thing with her right hand and strike at the shield with a hard, slicing blow. Had her blade been bared there would probably be a new furrow carved into the wood.

To further her attack she circled the hand that grasped the sheath back to her hip and stabbed it forward so the butt got slammed into the shield roughly. From that placement she swept her leg around into a horse stance and used her opposite hand to grasp the hilt and swiftly draw the sword from its confines.

With the blade gripped in her off hand, and the scabbard still in her dominant one, she pivoted in a near three hundred and sixty degree turn, using her momentum to knock the shield sideways when she once again faced her opponent. Three blows it'd sustained already and seemed to hold up. Now she skipped back a few steps, her off hand leading in a side face stance with her blade point up, while the scabbard was held parallel to her thigh in readiness to deflect or strike as she saw fit.

cNPC: Mako (+571)

TL;DR: Mako charges Veri again, ducking and aiming to sweep her feet with his axe. His shield is positioned to protect him from a downward strike. Teagan watches from the sidelines xD

She dodged his strike, but such was expected. She was a Valiant, after all, not an apprentice or new Recruit. If she hadn’t have evaded the obvious strike, then Mako would have not only been surprised, but, concerned. His axe hand finished its swing hitting little more than the warm air his opponent had vacated. With movement from both parties, the spar had truly begun.

Mako turned to follow Veri’s evasive maneuver, shield arm poised to deflect whatever she may throw at him. It was wise, as she swung out with her sheathed sword, the hard leather thonking against the wood of his shield as the scabbard struck it. Had the blade been drawn, the power with which she had swung with would have definitely created fresh battle scars upon the defensive weapon.

It was an intriguing attack for Teagan to bear witness to. The threat of the Valiant’s attack was quite there. Why she hadn’t drawn her sword yet, the War Lord could only guess. Perhaps it was her way to test the shield’s durability to a blunt blow before going after it with a sharpened edge.

There was not a second to spare after the first attack. The Brotherhood membered slipped from one movement to the next, twisting her grip on the sheathed sword so that the butt of it was thrust forward. While heavier than Veri, Mako still planted is feet in an effort to help better absorb the blow. A lesser trained Luperci might have stumbled backward had they not done the same. It was all part of the technique in wielding a shield; bloc, absorb, deflect. Her attack was enough to be felt through the shield, the energy spreading into his arm protected behind it.

The Medicine Master was relentless, much like Teagan was sometimes. Veri dropped into a low stance and finally drew her blade, and, it was then that Mako made sure to pay attention to whatever move the Secanti planned to do next. She pivoted on her heel once the sword was freed from its scabbard, allowing the energy from her spin to bring out the force she wanted as they rapped against Mako’s shield.

His grip tightened on the handle as he tried to keep the defensive weapon within his control. Being prepared for a stronger attack when she had drawn her sword had been the only reason why he had not lost the shield from the force with which she had struck it with. His hand jerked, but, he managed to keep it close to his person with a bit of effort.

When the Valiant’s spin had finished, she regained her footing and put space between them. Her first assault had only been a promise of what was to be expected from the rest of their spar. Mako allowed himself a breath to figure out his next move before charging toward her again. This time, he slid to a halt when he came in close, his body dipping low as he made to sweep out at her legs with his axe. His shield was held up in an effort to protect him from any downward swing she might make at him.

Teagan watched with silence as the two moved, attacked, and defended. She analyzed both opponents as she made her mental notes about each Cavaliers’ strengths, weaknesses, and tendencies thus far in the bout.

OOC Veri dodges his charge and delivers one diagonal slice with her sword, pivots to gain more momentum and delivers two more downward diagonal strikes, first with the scabbard and second with her sword. She then puts distance between them before charging Mako with her sword held across her body to her shoulder to be back slashed, with her scabbard kept low for deflecting. :P

Each attack got solidly absorbed, both by the shield and Mako. At the end of this spar his arm and shoulder would be thoroughly beaten down and sore. She'd have to make sure to give him a small dose of pain reliever to alleviate the ache for his efforts.

But those thoughts were only whispers in the recesses of her mind, whilst the majority of her attention took in the fact that he now chose to charge her. The muscles in her legs tensed slightly, her arms prepared to sweep in front of her to block whatever blow he had planned, only for his momentum to skid into a slide and his axe to be brought sweeping toward her legs.

Instead of hopping over the attack she dodged sideways yet again toward his shield, bringing down her sword in a diagonal cut against its wooden surface. But she didn't stop there, oh no. Veri followed the momentum of her own swing, pivoting sharply whilst swinging both arms in an upward arc.

Once the Valiant faced the blacksmith again, she struck in succession, coming down from the arc with her scabbard and her sword to strike diagonally across the shield, respectively.

She drew back then, putting space between them but only briefly, as the Medicine's Master began a charge of her own. Her teeth bared themselves in a snarl upon her approach, her sword coming up across her body for a backslash. Her scabbard got held low across her abdomen, ready to be maneuvered into whatever defensive position she needed on command.

cNPC: Mako (+460)

TL;DR: Lots of defending. Mako attempts to deflect/backhand-away Veri’s sword so he can try to strike her, only to have his attempt deflected by Veri’s low-ready scabbard. Mako puts space between them, but doesn’t attack immediately since he’s trying to figure out how to get past Veri’s defenses.

His icy gaze followed the movement of her feet, not daring to lift his shield just yet while he was still positioned so low. It was a good thing too, as, though Veri dodged his swipe at her legs, she still struck down with her sword as he predicted that she might have. If he had wavered, had been too eager to continue fighting, had brought his shield down too soon, her blade would have cut him gravely. For a healer, the woman was persistent in her attacks, and any would have been a fool to doubt the Valiant.

Despite the barrage of her attacks, the wooden shield did its job admirably. It absorbed the harshness of her combination of blows with blade and scabbard. Mako braced himself as each of Veri’s strikes pummeled away onto his shield. The sounds were loud against the wood, promising of the power behind each swing and the bruises and cuts the defensive tool spared him.

When she finally relented, finally drew back, Mako allowed himself to hold away his shield just enough to let him see what the Secanti woman planned to attack with next. She backed up enough that he allowed himself to rise from his vulnerable position, however, she did not tarry long. She charged him, her sword poised for another strike. Once more, the Ridley held up his shield to take the blow, his arm absorbing her energy.

He pushed the shield to the side then, attempting to effectively backhand the sword away from him so he could strike out. He swung with his axe in a diagonal slash, only to be thwarted with her sword’s scabbard that had been prepared for such a counterattack. He grimaced at bit at his own lack of progress against the medic, no doubt being judged critically by Teagan standing on the sidelines.

The War Lord continued her silent observation between the Brotherhood member and the First Cadet. Veri was, by far, the more skilled of the two fighters, however, Mako looked to be holding up well enough. While not scoring any hits against the Master of Medicine, he was not being schooled by her either. It was all as well though, as Teagan had wanted Mako to play a largely defensive role in order to test out the quality of the new shield.

Canary eyes watched as the black-masked wolfdog put distance between himself and his superior, the rise and fall of his chest as he caught his breath indicating the intensity of their spar thus far. Instead of going back into the fray though, Mako stood still, his stance guarded and ready to defend himself as he looked to be trying to figure out his next plan of attack.
