The morning dew was a gift if she had ever seen one.

To most hunters, it was a curse. It was common knowledge that water dampened and wiped away scent; so if one was out to prowl the forest for prey, they would be twice as difficult to capture without a clear trail to follow by nose. And for the smaller prey, this was undoubtedly true; rabbits and voles and pigeons and any other manner of small fauna would be neigh undetectable in the morning dampness if not within earshot. But for elk, dew was a give away. A tall beast- be it as graceful and careful as ungulates tended to be- could not avoid brushing up against foliage or leaving marks in the wet grass to follow. And the larger game, Lyris realized, tended to become more lax in situations such as these where they felt concealed by the dew. The Stryder was no fool; all it took was the faintest of smells and the marks of dry leaves that had been brushed against to tell her there was an intruder in their midst. And for once, it was not an unwelcome one. But an elk was not something to be taken down on one's own- not even Lyris the great would attempt such a thing. So the woman turned from the tracks and made for the Fort, loping quickly and easily towards the heart of her home in Lupus figure. She knew exactly who would help her.

The Fort was still rather quiet; the sun was only just rising and she was certain that Luca was still sleeping in their bed that she had departed hours before. There were few Cavaliers that enjoyed rising before the break of dawn, but she knew of at least one other. Veyra's dark-furred form was already up and about, and Lyris couldn't help but feel glad to see her in her four-legged form as well. She trotted up to the fellow once-Dawner, nudging the Damaichu beneath the muzzle in a feral gesture of hello. "An elk has wandered past the borders. Care to join me?" The mother's emerald gaze glittered just briefly with excitement. For old times' sake, she seemed to say.

Restless, Veyra tossed and turned beside her mates white fur. The faint light of the sun peaking over the horizon was hardly noticeable from the room tucked halfway under the soil. Yet, the wolfess could not fall back asleep. Quietly and gently she leapt down from the bed, four paws touching the cool ground. With her nose she nudged the door open; they hardly ever left the door fully closed for this very reason. With soft paws she snuck down the hall way and up the stairs into the main floor where the sunlight was more noticeable but flames from the fireplaces and torches lit the room.

Her nails tapped the hard ground as she moved, echoing noticeably in the silent hall as she trotted through it and out into the open. Stopping on the top of the Courthouse steps she sniffed and the air, closing her eyes to feel the soft breeze ruffle her mocha fur. With a sigh she took her time getting down the steps before moving into an athletic trot. She wasn’t sure where she would go or shat she would do but she wanted to get out of the Fort and use up some energy.

Luckily, Veyra didn’t have to decide; as fate would have it that someone else had plans for her. The sight of the white wolfess caused her ears to flicker up, seeing Lyris’ body language tell her that she was coming to speak to her directly. Her mind began to search for an excuse to get out of whatever horse duties she might want to drag Veyra into. Much to her relief and pleasure the topic was an Elk. Suddenly her green eyes lit up and she gave Lyris a push with her shoulder before bounding past her towards the Fort gates.

The answer was a very clear, excitable yes. Lyris could not help but allow a brief smile to lighten her sharp features as she turned to lope behind the fellow mother, easily catching up to Veyra's shoulder to then take the lead and guide her hunting partner towards their prey. The reality of the situation was easy to strike the Cavallo with a blow of nostalgia. She could recall the woman that ran next to her shoulder as a puppy that could barely walk. Many times, Lyris had visited X'yrin and her children. The dark child, odd and misfit against her autumn-colored siblings. The offspring of each of Lyris' former alphas. Seeing Veyra in quiet passing each day elicited something from her that she was certain the once-Dawner would not understand. She had been too young to realize the white lady's presence, but she had been there. Veyra was the last thing remaining of Sangi'lak, and her Luperci change, and a very essential moment to her past. She only hadn't any idea. It made Lyris feel old.

It was a peaceful trot to the location that the huntress had last located the elk. Once reached, the woman came to a gentle stop to follow the trail at a softer pace, certain that Veyra would follow without falter. They had hunted together in the past, as equal members of a feral pack. The elk had no chance. They followed it all the way to Weeping Lake, and then the dew trail ended, the scent gone with the opening of the lake's coast. They prowled the edge, searching in the cover of foliage for where their target may have gone. Soon enough, the animal was located. He was a buck, tall and regal with horns sprawling and shedding their winter's velvet. Such a handsome catch would undoubtedly do wonders for Casa's laboring population, who needed more fuel than ever to repair their tattered home. Lyris caught the Damaichu-green eye of her companion and gestured her muzzle silently to the opposite edge of the lake. The tactic was a common technique when taking down a lone creature of weight; they would make a carefully timed attack from each flank and bring the animal down as one. "Get as close as you can. When I shuffle the grass, he will look towards me. You leap, and I will follow." With the simple instruction passed with hushed voice, she nodded for the woman to take her position. Then they would begin their creep, and finally their kill.

Running on four legs, particularly with another lupus chasing after pushed adrenaline through her body. For the first time in a long time a smile spread across her lips and she flashed a devilish toothy grin and Lyris passed her, fake biting the air near her fluffy white tail. It seemed so strange that both feral wolfess’ would end up making a home with the Cavaliers, stranger still that they had mated brothers.

For some reason fate insisted that Lyris and Veyra would be bound together. Although Veyra was not close by any means to the female, both had been standoffish to others, they were forced together now. Even if Veyra felt poorly towards the white wolfess she would forever stand at her side if asked because she was the only other wolf that remained from her childhood. Bound by their mates and children they were feral sisters in blood now.

Oddly for the mocha princess she felt happy to follow behind Lyris in this case. Would anyone comment on seeing it late she would refuse that it ever happened but behind she followed, leaping and bounding as they pair made their way to where the Elk had last been seen. As the scent was caught in their noses the pair slowed their movements, both experienced in following body language and hunting in groups. The younger wolfess took her cues from her superior, hugging the ground with her belly as they peaked over fallen logs and brush.

At last the Elk’s majestic figure was found and Veyra could not help but wag her tail in anticipation. Hushed whispers set the huntress into motion, a hunting strategy she had used many times before when hunting with Callum. One delicate paw moved in front of the other as she crept to the opposite side of the animal. Mindfully she crawled under a fallen tree before turning her body and waiting for the signal to leap.

It was a silent, implied thing, their relationship: they never spoke much. For two earth-bound creatures with a dislike for talking unnecessarily, they avoided the simple conversations that most friendships thrived on. The bonds between feral creatures was a different one; it was completely formed of body language, where words were scarce and used only when necessary. But while they rarely spoke, the eye contact made in passing-by or nod of gratitude towards the other when found in Lupus form- in a place where the Optime was held in such high fervor- these things were what allowed them silent companionship. In New Dawn, Veyra had always been a step above her, being gifted with the bloodline of an alpha. Lyris was the daughter of an alpha, but her father was no Zalen. Here, she was above the dark-furred woman in rank, but perhaps not in the hunt. She led only because she knew where to find the kill, not because she felt she stood much higher above Veyra. Without her, Lyris would be fully unable to fell such a large beast. As they ran, the Corpo brushed her tail and shoulder ocassionally against the Prova's, sometimes for fun and sometimes for a signal they were changing direction. Eventually, they reached their destination. Then they parted, morphed from friends to predators. Lyris waited for the silence to recapture the forest, certain that enough time had passed. And then she crept forward, svelte muscles smooth and ever so careful under their veil of white.

Her nose was a hairsbreadth away from breaking cover when she intentionally shifted her tail, to rustle the grasses out of place. The Elk, a creature that held the very essence of caution, rose his head and mesh of elegant antlers. His dark, deep eyes met the cutting jade of her own, and he realized he was dead. The animal seemed to move in slow-motion as he attempted to turn and run, but Veyra would be upon him like a hellion in her assault from the opposite side.

It was moments like this that made Veyra feel alive. Long gone where the days in Sangi’lak where she would wrestle her brothers and quietly observe older wolves move around without a sound so easily. Long gone were the days in New Dawn where she would hunt in large groups of feral wolves who hardly had to speak to know what the other wanted, or who could put the other in their place through just a look. The Cavaliers used words for everything, they depended so heavily on their voices and it was exhausting.

The expectations wore on Veyra and made her long for the days of just growling or whimpering to communicate. Here, in this humanized pack, she was expected to do some much. She was expected to walk on two legs, expected to wear clothes and learn how t use a weapon effectively. The higher ranked canines expected her to fall into line, to listen to their words and obey, to find a role in the pack that more often than not involved using two hands and not her teeth and claws. So many expectations and all the wolfess wanted to do was exactly what she was doing in this moment. If only more Cavaliers were as comfortable on four legs as her hunting companion.

Her ears were perked up high on the top of her flag and her tail curled aggressively over her back. In front of her the grass ruffled and she knew exactly why. As the Elk lifted its head and turned his head directly towards the source Veyra pushed her body forward. The beast turned back in an attempt to run only to buck up into the air in realization of the second who was now airborne. Teeth gripped into the Elk’s neck briefly before a violent shake caused her grip to loosen and the wolfess fell to the floor with a snarl, backing quickly moving to the Elks side before his hooves could dance in her direction.

Sometimes Lyris felt as though she was betraying her roots. Luperci had never been a crime to the collection of the Stryder, but they were rather an enigma- a sort of scary, unusual story. She had been born true, absent of the disease that ravaged the rest of the world. But that had changed when her family had been taken from her and she was required to do the things she needed to survive. Sometimes, when she swept her cloak over her shoulders for that necessary show of rank, or when she shot her bow and arrows with such ease, she thought of if her mother would be proud or shamed and afraid. She would not recognize her daughter, born pristine and unmarked as the snow that fell so fresh; this was a woman ravaged by time and broken of heart. Lyris felt that she couldn't decide what her lineage would think of her, but she never betrayed them so fully. She could not let go of her birth skin, or the thrill of the run so closely bound to the earth. And it was moments such as these that she thought maybe her mother could be proud instead of afraid, from wherever she watched above.

Veyra did not disappoint. From Lyris' vantage point, the elk was pitched in her direction with the impact of her hunting companion, who managed to wound the creature's throat before being thrown off and forced to retreat in fear of bone-breaking hooves. Just as the dark-furred woman was falling, however, Lyris took her leap. She landed on the Elk's shoulders and sought to anchor herself by sinking her jaws into the warmth of the prey's throat. The target shrieked a high, grating noise, and bucked again, attempting to escape into the forest, even with Lyris clung to his back. Her paws raked for grip anywhere they would allow, but one could only hold onto a raging bull elk for so long. Eventually, she too was thrown off, water splashing brilliantly high as her flank took a dive into the shallows. The animal was hurt and bleeding notably, but still in power. As it attempted its run into the woods, Lyris shot to her feet, water flying, and took pursuit, certain Veyra would follow or had otherwise already made her second attack.

The huntress knew all to well the dangers of prey. Despite how delicious they tasted they were not easy to pluck out of a herd and take home. The hut was physically draining and it was all too easy to sprain a muscle. A good kick to your head would end your life if you were not mindful of your surroundings. Swiftly her feet criss-crossed, moving her back and away from the elk that was now kicking in her direction.

From the other side of the prey she could see flashed of white. Her view of Lyris was mostly blocked by the brown coated elk but it was enough to know she had jumped up to attack from the opposite side. A loud cry escaped into the forest from the mouth of the poor creature, sending shivers of excitement down her spine. A splash from the other side let her know that Lyris had fallen. Crashing through for forest the beast tried to escape the grip of the wolves. With a bark and a snarl Veyra joined Lyris in the chase.

The scent of blood was enough to drive her mad with thirst. If they had a successful hunt the elk would be enough for most of the pack to feed to their fate. Nipping at it’s heals the mocha wolfess took a leap of fail, her claws and teeth digging into it’s rear dangerously, hopefully giving her companion a much needed distraction to gain the upper hand.

Those not born with the need to hunt would never understand the power that ensued. They would always only witness pray as a slab of meat, either cooked and done up nice or raw and easy for the stomach's taking. Perhaps the prey, to them, was an enigma of the forest, and while it may be quick and slippery to catch, their own kind would always have the upper hand. How wrong they were. Even so young, Lyris had witnessed fatal injuries done by hunts to packmates, and could remember at least once occasion of gruesome bones crushed or heads bashed by the unmatchable ravage of elk and moose. These creatures were only beautiful in their stillness, undisturbed. Once the predator came into play, it was a battle, not a simple chase and slaughter. Lyris' shoulder ached as she was flung to the rocky shore of the lake, and was certain bruises would bloom along her form without too much time. She considered herself lucky, given the size and power of the buck. Should they bring him down was not guaranteed, by any means. The huntress swiftly recovered and shot into the tangle of the Sugarwoods without hesitation, Veyra's dark form just ahead of her own shoulder.

Her partner suddenly made a very bold move towards the rear of the elk, sinking pale claws into the beast's hide in an attempt to slow and create an opening. Lyris moved without the hesitation of even a heartbeat, a pale shot through the wood to pass her target as it was brought to a slow lope, perpetrator clung with an iron grip. Lyris, with all of her momentum, suddenly made a high leap, this time aiming for the bulk of the buck's neck. By some miracle, the creature of grace became tripped by a stray tree root as it lifted a leg to flee faster. The Corpo's grip, strung from the throat of the prey, was torn free as the elk fell with a heavy, deafening crash to the leaf-litter and foliage. Lyris managed to just roll herself away from sharp, bludgeoning hooves as they raked forwards and backwards in an attempt to regain their standing stance. The Cavalier shot back to her feet before the animal had sufficient time to rise again and leaped a second time, landing with a heavy pather-esque crouch across the buck's wide flank. Jaws parted, and Lyris lunged to sink her teeth into the upper half of the elk's leg, triumph flooding her with the scream that ensued as she felt her fangs click bone. Cutting jade gaze shot back to Veyra, and she jerked her head, motioning for the woman to take the blow to the jugular while the prey was down. It was only a matter of time before it shook Lyris free and regained deadly feet.

From her position hanging off the Elk’s rear Veyra could see the flash of white move to the front. She tucked her body into a ball, clinging as best she could with teeth and claws. Just below her tucked tail the Elk flailed it’s rear legs, attempting to hit any part of her exposed under belly and send the predator seething in pain to the ground. Within seconds, which seemed like hours, the prey stumbled and Veyra felt it stumble down to the ground, the impact knocking her into the grass.

It took the huntress time to recover as she took in the fact that she was now indeed touching soil. The smell of blood was stronger now. Slowly her vision became clear again and with wide green eyes she attempted to find out what had happened. Fortunately, Lyris’ white coat was and easy spot against the dark forest backdrop and her hunting partner was giving her a clear sign. The beast released a scream of pain, marking a clear victory.

Standing up Veyra moved to the front of the elk, who weakly moved his antlers to defend himself. All that was left to do was put the creature of it’s misery, and although time was still sensitive Lyris could not have provided Veyra with an easier target. With one last strike with her jaws the mocha wolfess’ head slicked past the dangerous antlers, biting hard into her targets already bloodied throat, and with a shake of her head and a crack the Elk fell limp.
