Operation Meteor

The Shooting Star She Saw

The bright red star that appeared in the sky with the spring equinox grew steadily larger in days following before disappearing as suddenly as it appeared.

A dark shadow appears over the western coast of Nova Scotia the next day, like a heavy storm cloud hanging low in the sky. A large, round silver thing hangs impossibly in the sky, and then, without warning, red light fires down in two straight and narrow beams. The ground splits open upon impact and burns. More arrows of red light rain down from the sky -- trees catch fire, smoke rises in thick pillars, the whole world shakes and trembles violently as flame and steam rises from the earth.

The shining metal ship wrecks havoc over the west for long hours. The sea sends forth massive waves as huge fissures appear in the shuddering ground and the coast starts to break apart into separate pieces -- small islands shaking free from the peninsula.

Eventually, the red light ceases, and a smaller silver shape descends from the belly of its mother, which rises back into the clouds and disappears. The remaining ship is slim and pointed, curved like a blade. It lands on the edge of the shattered western coast, on the edge of the ethereal eclipse. A pack of Luperci emerge.

The Invasion Begins

Nickodemus Sparhawk is a tall, stocky wolfdog with broad shoulders and a confident demeanor. He and his fellows are armed in alien weaponry, reminiscent of human firearms, but which shoot red beams of light that burn like fire. They set up camp and secure a wide perimeter around their silver, blade-shaped ship. Their objective is quickly apparent: loners and other canines caught in their territory are methodically stunned unconscious and brought aboard their craft for a short period of time. Afterwards, these individuals are apparently assimilated into Nickodemus's ranks.

Some such converted individuals roam back to their friends and family, speaking of riches and pleasures untold -- the most delicious meat, amazing stocks of rare gems, artifacts, and tools, the best-trained horses, free for any member to claim, and so on... And it must be true, for friends accompanying these newly converted individuals back to the Blade Ship Pack are soon speaking of the same wonders.

Plot Details

  • The initial attack of the massive silver ship causes a series of earthquakes and tsunamis to ravage all of the playable territories.
  • The western coast of Nova Scotia effectively splits apart and gradually, chunks of it break off into smaller islands. This process occurs over the course of the month, with mild quaking persistent in the area during that time.
  • The Blade Ship pack comprises an unknown number of Luperci, all armed with a laser weapon which can burn and stun. It is not typically capable of lethal blows; however, all of the Luperci are also very effective and fighters. Players are free to create Blade Ship NPCs under regular temporary NPC guidelines.
  • Players may NOT create/join as new characters hailing from the Blade Ship. However, active characters may be taken aboard the Blade Ship and converted -- this process effectively enslaves the active character, whose body is taken over by a parasitic creature. The character becomes a helpless consciousness trapped in their own body, which now only follows the parasite's commands to proceed with invasion. Please PM the 'Souls Assemblage if you have questions about the details of infestation.
  • Outside of forcing trespassers onto their ship and luring in various visitors, the Blade Ship has not approached any of the area packs nor established contact with their leaders. However, given the hubbub and loner grapevine, pack leaders may want to be extra careful before sending any diplomats...

Ongoing Developments

This is the first part of a year-long plot! We encourage players to have some encounters with Blade Ship NPCs and deal with the earthquake/tsunami damage while we hash out the details of the next part with your leaders... ;)

We really are blowing up Western Tangles though! :D

Operation Meteor

FOR REAL THIS TIME

The bright red star is a meteor which makes impact off the western coast of Nova Scotia, here:

Luperci will be able to see it coming as a ball of fire and see it crash into the ocean, where it will trigger a series of earthquakes and tsunamis, affecting much of the playable territories, as well as off-board areas, most notably Freetown. There will be aftershocks for days, massive fissures in the western parts of the territories, as well as flooding and other effects.

The coast of Western Tangles will be split apart, creating a bunch of small islands, as well as expanding/forming new lakes further inland and flooding much of the area. The water will sit for weeks, maybe months, making the area even more swampy. Many of the newly formed islands will gradually sink into the ocean, as well.

Other coastal areas, including St. John, Cape Hopewell, Halifax, Cours des Miracles, and AniWaya will see significant flooding and brutal tidal waves, though not as severe as those to the west. Casa di Cavalieri, Inferni, Salsola, and Vinatta will also see flooding and destructive waves. On the bright side, there will be no accompanying storm or strong winds, so once the waves settle, the flooding should subside in those, more inland territories quickly.

As you can see, there will be some significant territory changes, including the retirement of a number of territories and subterritories. The Halifax forum is also being removed. Threads taking place in Halifax should go in Seabreeze Brink. A few other forum/territory divisions are being updated, so double-check the stickies in each forum if you're unsure.

Check with your pack leader(s) for details about damage and other effects to individual packs.

Also Note: Freetown will effectively be abandoned as a result of the earthquake and tsunami. The coast will be wrecked, making it impossible for ships to make landfall there and ruining its function as a port town. Residents and traders are likely to migrate further south. While this doesn't affect active roleplay, it's still something to keep in mind for any packs/characters that make regular trips to Freetown.

New Map

Here's the real new map, sans Blade Ship. ;)

We'll be updating links, territory information, and other relevant things across the board and wiki (feel free to help??) as soon as possible. If you're still seeing outdated or inaccurate information in about a week, do drop us a line in Maintenance!

Timeline

  • March 31th: Meteor is highly visible as a "very bright star."
  • April 1st: Meteor visible throughout the day, accumulating in a large ball of fire which collides with ocean around 10pm. The air blast from the impact blows down a majority of trees along the coast -- a few catch fire, creating small, isolated burn areas -- and within seconds, earthquakes can be felt in the surrounding regions and a massive tsunami rushes towards western Nova Scotia, striking within the hour.
  • April 2nd: The waves hit land as the earthquakes get worse. Water fill the fissures as the ground splits apart along the western coast. Active quaking and related aftershocks can be felt well into morning, and well inland. Significant flooding is seen throughout Serena Reserve and Ethereal Eclipse, not to mention all coastal areas.
  • April 4th: Portions of the western coast have broken off into small islands. Light tremors can still be felt throughout the entire area (Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island). Tidal waves are monstrous, but not quite tsunami-level. There's flooding all along the coasts and in some areas inland.
  • April 10th: Tremors have settled for the most part, but can still be felt in some areas along the western coast as bits of land continue to break off. Waves still dangerous, but not damaging to coastal areas.
  • April 14th: Coastal damage has settled, though many areas are still flooded. The last of the new islands break off. Waves are still higher than average.

Additional Notes

You can reference this page for affects of the impact right on the western coast of Nova Scotia. The main thing to note is that there will be multiple earthquakes and tsunamis, as the meteor strikes right between some plates. You can adjust the distance from the impact (the first parameter in the URL) to see how things like air blast and debris may affect your area.

Do note that for "air blast" and thermal effects -- the tool lists burn effects for humans, but canines and Luperci are able to better withstand heat blasts. Additionally, individuals that are inside or otherwise protected at the time of the air blast aren't likely to be as affected.

In general, we're fine with packs and players choosing the extent of damage they want to play out as long as all detrimental effects of the meteor are referenced, considered, or mentioned. If you have any questions, ask! Happy April! :)
