Midnight Shores Mandatory Group Thread! Remember, you only need to post once, doesn’t matter when or where, just once so that your character is here :) Let’s catch us a moose, Midnighters! My next post will start the coursing part of the hunt!

With the turn of the season, the air had gotten colder, and the days shorter. The world had started to become greyer as clouds lingered in the skies above, as if too heavy for the fall winds to push them along. The landscape was littered in colors of browns, reds, oranges, and yellows. Leaves had fallen and danced on a wayward breeze, and there was a noticeable chill in the morning air that indicated that the season’s first snow might be well underway.

Skana sat upon a large rock, waiting for everyone to arrive that was going to pitch in with the hunt. A lone, bull moose had been spotted a few days before. Withered in age and wounded from the rutting season, the old veteran had likely fled to the island for one last shot at life. With its age and wounds though, it was obvious that it would not last the oncoming winter season. It would have been a wasted opportunity if the Midnighters let nature slowly take back the bull’s body.

Such a hunt was something rare to be had, as the large cervidae’s power and size made such an affair too risky unless one was desperate. Its giant antlers could puncture skin and flesh, and its heavy hooves could break bones. Killing the beast would greatly help the pack though; meat, fur, antlers, bones. And, to a few, would allow them their badge of completion in life with taking down a moose. The pros and cons had not been decided upon lightly.

However, injured and old, the pack had no better opportunity.

There were a few that had gathered in the pack’s agreed meeting area, each having taken on one of the two more feral forms. With many lacking in any useful weapon techniques for a hunt—one did not just throw an axe with so many moving bodies around—it was easier this way. They had the advantage of speed and agility they lacked in their two-legged form; skills that would be useful for tiring the moose and avoiding wild kicks or charges.

Her brother, Vepar, and her husband, Sully, were positioned near her, each giving pointers to her children about what to expect and what they should do and avoid. The mother had been given the two pre-teens explicit orders to let the adults do the actual take down of the moose. Skana’s friend, Malus, stood off to the side, keeping an eye out for any stragglers that might have become lost or distracted by the flora or otherwise.

The Procyon let her glacier gaze sweep over the group one last time as the last of them trickled in. Any that did not show and didn’t have a reasonable excuse would not be punished, but, they would likely lose face with the pack itself. The hunt would require everyone’s help, and Skana—sweet as she was—would personally see to it that those that were lazy did not receive any benefits from their packmate’s hard work.

When everyone had gathered, Skana rose to her feet and spoke loudly. “Thank you for coming, everyone. As you all know, we’re going after a moose today. I won’t lie to you, it won’t be an easy task. There is risk in this, but I’m confident that we will succeed with our teamwork. Our numbers are great, and our prey is but one; old and injured. The death we grant him will be merciful rather than let nature slowly take its course.”

Her gaze shifted to a nearby tree where her great horned owl, Thanos, was perched. “We have confirmed the bull’s location this morning. When we get there, separate yourselves accordingly. Only you know what you are good at. This isn’t the place for pride or bravado. Do only what you’re capable of. I need coursers, I need ambushers, and I need someone who is quick with a knife.”

She looked down to her husband, knowing of his talents in herding. “Sully will be leading the team that chases the moose towards our ambush team. Your mission will be to make sure the moose runs its intended course.” Her eyes returned to the crowd. “I will be leading the ambush team. We will be doing the initial attack and further subduing to make sure the bull can’t get back onto its feet and to keep its head still. I will call when it is time to kill the beast.

“Do not move or attack unless Sully or I give the signal. The key is to work as a team. If you feel the situation is about to go bad though, you say something. I’d rather us make a second run than risk losing one of you.” She let the instructions sit for a moment before she continued, a reassuring and confident smile forming on her face. “If there aren’t any questions, let’s move out. We have a moose to kill.”

With that, she leapt off of the rock and began to make her way through the wood. Thanos took flight and began leading the party to where the moose had been sighted last.

"Put on your war paint"

A silver furred creature stepped through the red, gold, and yellow scenery. The canine was long-legged and looked skinny despite the slight amount of muscle and fur gained from the form. Her head was still narrow and dominated with large ears and mismatched green eyes looked around. One leg remained off the ground, scars marring it and looking somewhat skinnier than the other appendages. A long bushy tail, almost as long as the female's body brushed the ground and made the female look similar to a fox. A long sleeved green garment; a dress was tied securely around her waist and a satchel was tightly secured to her body.

A darker creature, one with a similar build to the light-hued creature but was slightly shorter and had more muscle. Bi-shaded amethyst eyes shown from the dark background of her fur and grey stockings padded through the leaves. She also had a garment tied around her waist, a amethyst hooded robe that was long enough to function as a mini dress. The pair of Secui waited patiently, both heterochromia-afflicted irises directed towards the woman on the rock.

Avinalora still felt weird in this form. Secui had never been a real option for her as she didn't really consider it one. She liked the quickness of her Lupus shape and how she could weave through the underbrush. The vixen was taller, much taller than she had ever been in a four-legged form and it was weird for her to be taller than Adrian and not be so close to the ground. The only reason she had taken the halfling form was because she needed a fast form that could carry her bag of herbal remedies and she could carry a piece of clothing in case she had to revert to Optime. The healer just hoped she wasn't expected to hunt because she would probably end up face-planting in the leaves because of her blindness.

Adrian had no qualms against being in her second form. It was a useful form for her, especially since she wasn't very tall in her original form and this was a stronger shape to take in a hunt. She had claws that were sharp and was equal in height to some of her packmates. That didn't happen often since a majority of Midnight Shores members were wolf hybrids and were quite large. The younger sister didn't mind being shorter than her elder sister; the one that normally looked up to the former assassin. She was lucky that she managed to drag the jackal hybrid on this hunt, pointing out that if anyone was injured she would have to treat. The dark vixen paid no attention to a forest-hued glare burning into her back as she waited for Skana to speak.

A moose! The she-jackal screeched internally as she heard the Procyon's speech. She had expected a deer, but not a creature that was gigantic and dangerous. And then the fact that it was a bull just made it even worse. A massive beast with antlers and didn't mind trampling something as scrawny as herself. The crippled female had no hunting experience other than stalking mice, and even those hunts had a slim chance of actually catching something. And now she was hunting a bull moose! She was screwed.

"If I die in this, I will haunt your sorry tail." The moon-washed maiden muttered, directing the comment to her sister who didn't seem to hear her despite the large ears that all jackals had. She hoped that maybe she could just shadow the hunt, not really hunting and being on standby. The female decided to voice this out loud.

"I will be on standby in case of injury." The argent medic said.

The word had gotten around that there was a pack hunt and everyone had to show up. It had been ages since Temo had done any sort of group hunting. With the addition of new member through the interim that he had not hunted with anyone other than Jace, he was afraid that he would probably cause the hunt to go wrong or just generally screw things up. If anything, he could be backup or offer moral support.

Temo had taken the long way around to the meeting place taking in the sights and smells. He figured that he could also scout around and see if there were any buildings that he could investigate at a future time. He was always on the lookout for finding more woodworking tools or other treasures that were left behind by the previous dominant specie. In his lupus form, he lounged under a nearby tree while they waited for the rest to arrive. The instructions were clear and he decided that helping to herd the moose into the trap would be best for him.

Gonna move this thread along x3 There’s still time to join, y’all! I will only make two more posts after this one! My next post will be the ambush group with my final one being the death of the moose!

Both teams, feel free to make assumptions about the chasing part of the hunt :3

The group was on the move with the owl leading the way towards their quarry. Gradually, the forest gave way into open terrain. To many, the area might have been a familiar one, as the northern lands of the island had been where the pack had obtained a good majority of their horse stock with Sapient’s help. The grass grew tall out on the open plain, and one could see for quite a ways at the top of one of the many rolling hills. The hills bled slowly bled into a nearby marsh area, and, at the owl’s throaty hoot, Skana halted the traveling party.

In the far distance, a lone moose stood along the fringes the scarce brush. It browsed obliviously, searching for the last of the more nutritious plants that hadn’t been snuffed out by the season’s chill. It was a magnificent beast to behold, but, even from their distance, the Midnighters would likely see that the animal had had its better days. Stale blood could be smelt on the wind. As well, the bull favored one of its front legs as it shifted to a different patch of roughage.

Skana scanned the terrain they had to work with before turning to face her troop, searching for her husband among them. The shepherd moved forward, wordlessly nodding to her as he accepted his piece in the hunt. Never one to be too serious though, he couldn’t resist winking at her, to which, Skana ignored. Her glacier gaze returned to the rest of the pack.

Her voice was low and hushed. “Those going with Sully, make you all keep it from going into the water. If it gets in there, we won’t be able to follow it unless it comes out or dies in there. We’ll set the ambush over there.” She turned and nodded to a dip in the land. Downed trees and tall shrubs lied just past the spot, and would provide for perfect coverage for the waiting Luperci. If the moose were chased down from the high ground, it would have to change its gait to compensate for the dip, and the Midnighters would take advantage of it.

“Be vigilant of where you are in accordance to the moose and the ambush site. And watch where you step—” she hissed, “—or you’ll be limping home with a sprained foot!” The Procyon looked over the group and nodded, giving her last peace before the pack split. “He may be big, but we are many. We can do this, Midnighters.” With that, she nodded to Sully for him to take his team out. Skana led the rest towards the ambush site where she laid low and hidden, but could still watch the herding party.

Sully’s lean, dark figure circled his group wide of the moose, being sure to keep them downwind of it for as long as possible. He appointed Midnighters to certain spots along their intended route, places where he thought the moose might try to use to trick up the coursing party. Their positions also acted as places where fresh runners could take over in case of someone tripping up or running short.

When everyone was in place, Sully took one last look over his group before throwing up his head a rallying howl, alerting both moose and the ambush party that the hunt had begun.

The bull was on the move the instant it heard the predator’s call, snorting as it turned and ran—as best as it could with a mild limp—away from the source of the sound. The party began its pursuit, its members snarling and snapping at the spindle-legged beast as it fled from their deadly jaws. The shepherding Luperci worked as a single mind; moving the moose quickly along their pre-set course. Appointed individuals sprang at just the right moment when the moose tried to break from the path.

Only once did it try to fight off its pursuers, turning and waving its mighty rack threateningly. The Midnighters were relentless though, nipping at its unguarded limbs and distracting it with their onslaught of noise and feints. It didn’t take long to get the great beast moving again, and, soon, the familiar trees and shrubs that Skana had pointed out earlier came into sight.

All they needed was one last good push to get the bull moose there.

Smaller means faster

Avinalora was nudged by her sister towards the chasing group. She didn't even want to participate in the hunt since she was a healer, but Adrian wouldn't take "I can't even see the ground" for an answer. Her blood had already run cold when she saw the beast; it was huge and definietly looked like something that she wouldn't want to mess with. But the vixen knew that as a Cygnus, she must help the pack, even if she was blind, had a lame leg, and no hunting experience.

"Don't worry, you won't be the one attacking," The former Sicaria said, "Just look like you are into the hunt, but dawdle behind a bit." Her sister added before bounding off to the ambush team. Those words of encouragement weren't exactly helpful when she was facing a huge bull. But she hoped that maybe she would be fast enough to dodge a one ton battering ram if it decided that it didn't like a wayward creature.

And before the jackal medic knew it, the hunt had started. As she smelled blood in the air, and felt the spirit of the pack hunting, a predatory urge ignited her veins. A feral urge that she had never felt before spurred her to run and chase the prey. Her sinewy body leaped forward from her original fast-paced trot into a full-out sprint. The petite Secui was built for speed and it took no time for her to get to where the moose was despite her three-footed stance.

The silver fox was on the moose's left, nipping at the moving leg. Her needle-sharp teeth didn't do much damage though she did consider biting the hamstring which would cripple the beast even further. But the healer didn't want to cause the beast any unnecessary suffering so she decided to simply guide the moose, not biting it anymore.

And then the crevidae turned around, his rack lowered and ready to charge. But the monochrome fox followed her pack mate's lead. Her agile ivory form banked to the right of the beast and darted for his injured leg, her cunning side coming to the surface. Her sharp teeth slashed the opened wound, earning a bellow of pain from the moose

It had not been all too hard to find out just what had gotten many of the Midnighters interested in what were wandering around their lands in recent days, sure the moose was said to be one of considerable ago now given it’s retreat to seemingly quieter lands. But it would seem regardless of that it were apparently still of considerable size and would certainly provide plenty in way of varying supplies not just the meat in which would still be plentiful. But of course this were not the reason for Ares having decided upon to join all those who had already come to participate within the hunt that had been planned after information had been gathered in regards of the wanderings of the injured Moose.

No; the reason was that it simply just felt good to be able to take part in a hunt involving a large number if not all those who lived within the shores pack, strange yet interesting how something as seemingly simple as a hunt would bring everyone together for however short or long a time. Of course this had to be taken in account before Ares could even consider following after all those who had already left; after all so used to being within his optime form and using his bow that he had been sorely tempted to join those who had already gathered without so much as a second thought. It had been a good thing however that he had reconsidered such an action before dashing off without so much as a backwards glance and possibly regretting such an action and decision later on. Thankfully the hesitation did give him the opportunity to reconsider since there were no doubt in his mind there would be many negatives to that plan, namely the risk of harming a fellow pack member - besides he had hardly ever been within his Halfling form recently so it would do him a whole load of good to do so for a time.

So it had been for this reason that Ares had not arrived to join the others who had already gathered just as Skana had been voicing her plans for the hunt all of which sounded like a sound enough plan. And thankfully this time it took the grey male mere seconds to make his choice in joining the ambush group rather than the other, it were not as if he did not think that those who were going to steer the moose in the right general direction towards those who were laying in wait further along - quite the opposite actually. It were actually due to the fact that he would no doubt regret not opting for the thrill of the chase that would soon be upon them all when their prey got into the right position for those in wait to go after it.

Though no matter how prepared he or anyone else were for what were planned and regardless of how careful any of them could be, there was that small part of Ares - and possibly some others too for all he knew - that could not help but feel some concern for the pursuers when the moose dared to however briefly turn it's attention to them before seemingly giving up. Well; it would not be long now before they pushed it close enough assuming nothing else were to go too badly wrong before that happened.

And until then; all that Ares would have to concern himself with was ensuring he stayed within place until the instruction to move and attack were made lest he ruin the whole hunt for everyone and thankfully despite his outward appearance of general fidgeting that could be mistaken for impatience his willpower over ruled such impulses.

Sorry for the wait, guys! Decided it was easier to roll it all up into one post x3 Last post by me! This will be archived December 21st!

For a brief moment, Skana had been worried that the moose might have been too audacious of the Midnighters to take on. It had turned and tried to fight off the coursing group, and the Procyon had felt her heart quench as her packmates evaded and tried to harass the moose back into “flight” rather than “fight.” The monochrome pelt of Avinalora flashed amongst the bodies, darting forward to sink her teeth into the cervidae’s injured leg. The bite, compounded by the other nips from the other Midnighters as they took advantage of the moose’s distraction and cry of pain, got the large animal barreling towards the ambush sight once more.

Skana’s glacier gaze flicked across her gathered teammates, wordlessly telling them to get ready for their part. She turned her attention finally on Vepar and the other large males of her group. A sharp nod was given to them.

The moose thundered towards them with the rest of their packmates hot on its heels, and as it crossed through the gap in the brush, Skana let out a harsh command, “Now!” The first wave of her ambushers, her muscle, leapt, taking the moose by surprise. The rest, her holders, sprung after the larger males managed to trip the moose to the ground. The bull fell hard into the cold, unforgiving earth. Its spindly legs buckled beneath the weight of itself and its added parasites.

It bellowed and screamed as the sharp fangs of the Luperci dug into its battle-worn hide. The coursing group joined their packmates, grabbing what they could to keep the beast from rising. The bull shifted and tried its best to move, to rid itself of the vermin that sought to bring it down. Even injured, it was still a powerful creature, and at one point, it managed to get a foot beneath it, and had started to lift its chest from the ground.

“Don’t let it get up! Someone get a hold of its head!” Skana commanded. The last thing they needed was for the animal to gain its original height advantage again, much less, have to fend off its antlers while trying to keep it from kicking anyone.

When the beast was subdued enough, the Procyon felt it was time to end the hunt quickly. With its head secured by two Midnighters, Skana called for what would be the final blow that would put the creature out of its misery, “Knife!” The two that held the head turned it in such a way that the throat was exposed, and the individual who had been appointed with the final task appeared like a summoned shadow.

A quick, deep slash, and the moose’ life liquid began to spill from its throat. The Midnighters held their positions, and when, at last, the light left the beast’s eyes, Skana threw up her head in a rallying, triumphant howl.

Snow began to fall.

Even in death, the once-king would live on, through its offspring and through the reapers of death. It would give the Luperci strength with its meat, protection with its antlers and bones, and, finally, warmth with its pelt. The proud beast would live on.

Where one king fell, so too, would another.

Avinalora was surprised that her action had spurred the moose to run. It had been much of a surprise for her since she had never hunted before. She kept on running, her pelt flashing alongside the beast's hooves. It was almost to the ambush site and the small Secui slowed down a bit and ran alongside her pack mates, following their cues. And then the Procyon gave the order.

Adrian's heart filled with pride as she watched her sister. The medic had made quite a leap in her former manerisms, joining the hunt. She was even more proud of her sister who had bitten the beast's foot, moving it towards the ambush group. And then the dark vixen crouched, waiting for the moose to come, and it did. At Skana's order, the warrior leaped, her claws and teeth digging into the moose's side.

Avinalora watched as the blurs of the ambush group attacked the bull. She didn't pause, thundering forward to launch herself next to the Raven girl, digging her claws and teeth into the animal's side. And then the moose fell, jolting the jackal mutt off and sending her tumbling into the earth. She panted, taking inventory. She wasn't injured and got back to her feet, shaking her fur off. And then the silver female saw the moose starting to rise. And then intinct drove her to throw herself at the prey's hide. Fifty-eight pounds of Luperci slammed into the beast's ribcage, knocking it into the earth, her teeth dug into its hide.

The Shadowryn had also been knocked off the animal but had come back in time to secure its head, gripping beast's ear with her teeth and pushing its head with her paws. And then one of her pack mates killed the moose.

A howl echoed through the forest and both sisters joined in. Both were overjoyed. But they didn't know that happiness wouldn't last for long.

The meeting was short and the instructions given out, he chose the group to participate in and followed the other chasers as they zeroed in on the moose and circled into position as they waited for the word to be given. The hunt began as the group goaded the moose into running and they steered their antlered victim towards the waiting ambush party.

There was a fair number of participants in the hunt so Temo had decided to let the young hunters ply the skills they have learned and gain valuable experience while he ran along on and kept a watchful eye on the proceedings to make sure that if someone got into trouble he would be there to lend a paw and make sure injuries were minor. The end was swift and the knife struck true and the life blood of the moose soaked into the ground as the light went out in his eyes.
