It was refreshing when one had only the gusting, freezing breeze to accompany them on their travels. Lithia reveled in times like these where she didn’t have to worry about anything. No judgment. No obligation. No nothing. She was out in the free lands, given the freedom to do as she pleased and how she pleased. The beaches along the coast were freezing to the touch. The wet sand cracked under her weight, though it was something about the waves that kept the snow from sitting there on top of it – or something. She had heard or read something about it once, but now as she looked out to the freezing, rolling waters, she couldn’t recall the facts.

She had been in her mother’s neck of the woods. She knew this by the old wooden houses that came into view once she reached the town. Deep down inside, Lithia knew that she did not want to see her. Under any circumstances. The relationship the two of them shared was tense and awkward – one that Lithia preferred to avoid instead of confront. She remembered when Tzila came to her, speaking of a third sister that Axelle had brought into this world, one that they all shared. She had been a Lykoi. She had been born from violence, yet she did not seem to share the same craze as their grandfather – the one Axelle had told her that came to her home in Anathema in the night to kill her. For what? Well, Lithia left that question to the insanity that was rumored to plague him.

Eire had been a different story – one that Lithia had only sought to find answers from once. They were sisters, yes, but Lithia held a great hate for the girl who had done nothing to her. She was born to someone else – perhaps someone else that their mother loved, but made up a story about rape so she did not have to feel bad about forgetting about her true mate, Itzal. Sometimes Lithia felt grateful for her father, imagining that he had simply grown tired of the life he lived and made a new one for himself – without Axelle.

But also without her, and that was the part she tried not to feel.

Lithia paid attention to her nose, making sure that she did not come across any familiar scents along her way. On her back was her bag and she had every intention of picking up anything valuable here – whether it be something actually valuable or something that could be made valuable at a later time. She had not forgotten the scavenging that she had done for Sapient.

At random, Lithia picked one of the old contemporary styled buildings she found along the beach, nestled between the shore and the shallow, rolling hills at the base of the Halcyon Mountains. Inside, the home was worn – likely from the salt from the beach and the constant moistness in the air. Right away, Lithia was assaulted with the scent of rotting wood and mold, but she put her bag down on a table in a room with cracked and corroded tiles on the floor and a big white box in the corner that she dare not open in fear of the smells that would emanate from whatever rotted inside for the last fifty years and hang stagnantly in the air. She remembered the refrigerator they had in Anathema when she was young. You just didn’t open the door of that thing unless you wanted to smell festering cheese and death hanging in the air of the first floor for the next six hours. Such a smell could clear the room of even intruders.

Leaving her bag – filled with a few folded animal skins and pretty things like jewelry and carved bone runes – Lithia wandered lazily through the rest of the structure, eventually running up the wooden stairs – which protested under her weight – to rummage through the drawers of rotted dressers and bathroom cabinetry for small treasures.

Inca had expanded his adventures beyond the Dampwoods, the male growing ever more confident in his ability to take care of himself, his ability to slip through the snow cover forest without too much noise a skill that had served him well. With that confidence, he'd decided to take on the mountains to the northwest of Anathema, and found a meandering path through the mountains. What it's original purpose had been was beyond him, but it eventually allowed him a clear sight of the ocean to the north.

That alone could have been enough to satisfy the hybrid, but he had eaten well, and had no obligation to return immediately. So he'd continued northward, curious to see if the ocean of the north was any different from the one that he'd grown up near. If he'd not spotted the old buildings near the beach, that would have probably been the end of it, he'd have gone back home to his family, and the adventures that he could find within the packs. That was not what fate had in store for the hybrid however, the structures far too inviting to Inca's eyes, drawing the male toward them.

An unfamiliar scent at the threshold of one building in particular was enough to pique his interest even more, the male uncertain if it was the smell of someone who had already left, or if it was currently occupied. A moment or two of deliberation was all that it took for Inca to start making his way inside, his trusty bone knife lashed to his left thigh, and rough deer hide cloak brushing against the wall that he kept close to. His blue eyes trailed over the room before actually entering, seeing no one there at least. An occasional gust of wind against the old building made it hard for him to discern if the sounds that carried throughout was someone else moving around, or just the wind. Rotting wood and mold made for a pungent mask for the stranger, but his desire to find them was brushed aside from his first sight of unguarded belongings.

Not the cautious sort, Inca approached with reckless abandon, only bothering to quiet his steps. A quick glance around the room, and he was crouched down in front of the bag, greed in his eyes. It would have been wise to just grab the thing and run, but he wanted to know what was inside, his hands dipping into the container to begin sifting around. Skins, jewelry, even some carved bone that he didn't understand the purpose of. It was quite the treasure trove, enough that he didn't pay all that much attention to the nearby staircase. His sister, maybe the Angela, there was enough to impress both, maybe.

Upstairs, the only “treasures” she was given were moth-eaten clothing that she couldn’t hope to fit into anyway, old plastic bottles that were so weathered they crumbled at her touch, and empty drawers. Many, many empty drawers. It was either junk that no one wanted or it was hollow furniture, discarded and insect-eaten, rotted. Downstairs and above she heard a creak, and Lithia paused only to hear the wind gusting outside. The building was old – honestly, Lithia questioned how it still stood being at the edge of the shore and all. Weather conditions were always worse on the edge of the lands, plus the moisture in the air made everything soppy and rotten.

Lithia moved from the bathroom into the upstairs bedroom, unquietly, gathering up the few items she thought could maybe be turned into something useful. Perhaps the cloth could be sold or commissioned into covers or rags for cleaning her weapons. Perhaps someone else would find use in them. With her arms full of cloth and a rusted and cracked hand mirror, Lithia carefully took on the stairs, making her way down to the main level where her bag sat idly.

As the ceiling came away and Lithia could see into the room, she dropped everything in her arms. The mirror clunked down the stairs and the clothes fell into a heap that rolled down the last few. And Lithia jumped over everything. ”What do you think you’re doing?!”

There, poised over her bag, was a man, sifting through her things. Skins, jewelry, and bone runes set aside on the floor as he continued to go through her treasures. Lithia’s blood boiled and with her findings discarded on the floor, she reached down and grabbed for the dagger that was sheathed at her thigh. ”Back away, if you know anything about self-preservation. It’s not worth it, I assure you.”

Inca heard her coming before he actually saw the woman, his blue eyes fixated on the staircase about the same time she noisily dropped her scavenged belongings down the stairs. The question that she threw at him was a simple enough one, not that he had any sort of answer that wouldn't be obviously a lie, or just make her all the more angry.

He tried to size the woman up as she came down the stairs, guessing her to be about the same height as himself, but also alone. If the odds had seemed more in her favor, Inca might have tried to bolt then and there, but a glimmer of confidence kept the man where he'd been found red handed. ”It was left here all by itself, figured it was fair game. Like those things you dropped in the rush to get down here.” Inca answered back, a confident tone to his voice, even if his eyes looked wary about her going for the knife at her thigh.

Even if he remained sure of himself, Inca did not want to see the woman manage to draw the knife, even coming out on top of a knife fight didn't mean leaving without cuts all over him. ”Maybe there's enough to share? Could talk it... Inca started, his voice more placating than before, but abruptly stopped when he tried to push toward her. He didn't really plan to hurt her, imagining instead that he could bowl her over, and then get the knife from the woman before she had a chance to use it on him.

If Inca had stopped to actually consider the value of what he could steal from her, the man would have probably charged in the opposite direction. Instead, he'd got it into his head that he could overpower the other Luperci, and then take the pack, like he had with Lou. Even if she'd been much smaller than the woman in front of him.

”Only ‘fair game’ to someone stupid enough to dive right for it!” she snarled, closing the distance between them quickly, her knife drawn. The male didn’t seem eager to fight, not like Lithia was. She was ready to defend her bag of treasures and gut the man if it came right down to it. He stood beside her bag, unwilling to move no matter how close she got. He posed a barrier. She’d need to remove that barrier to get her stuff back.

And she completely forgot about the shit she just jumped over to get down here. Chances are, the man wouldn't care for a few moth-bitten clothes and a cracked mirror... unless he intended to use them against her somehow.

She scoffed, taking his words like an unexpected low-blow. ”You think you can negotiate items that you just found? I don’t think so. Either you hand them over, or I’ll make you. She edged closer, dagger pointed, hungering for his flesh. ”If you do it willingly, there’s a good chance you don’t leave her brutally injured… or dead, depending on how stupid you truly are.”

Lithia’s intense eyes searched for an opening, and she took it – she lunged for the man, dagger pointed, intending to stab him right in the chest, if she could. However, she didn’t expect him not to move, so she wasn’t all that confident that her knife would make its mark. If the thief had dodged, she would have slashed the sharp weapon in his direction, hot on his tail.

What Inca had expected to be a quick scuffle, one where he came out on top, quickly became something more dangerous once the knife was in her hand. Even more so when she cut off his attempt to charge at her, with a lunge of her own. If he'd been just a bit slower on the uptake, he'd have found a knife in his chest, but managed to at least avoid that fate, even if it meant unbalancing himself.

Colliding with the stairs caused pain to bloom from the side of him that took the brunt of the impact, a last ditch effort to catch himself on the wall leaving claw marks, and only slowing him a little bit. ”Are you crazy?!” Inca managed, clearly surprised that she'd actually tried to follow through with her threat. She wasn't the first woman that he'd met who knew how to fight, but his father's sexist beliefs left him more likely to imagine the opposite sex as weaker, less likely to fight.

If she'd given a bit more time, he might have followed with some effort to deescalate the situation, but had no opportunity when she so quickly chased after him with the knife. Rather than speak, Inca made do with the situation as it was, a low growl slipping from him while trying to both avoid the dagger's bite, and also fight back.

Without the time to get up from his unenviable position on the stairs, Inca tried to instead bring her to the ground with him. A sweep at her legs with his own, and frantic efforts to catch her wrist were all he could think to do in an effort to avoid being slashed up.

He came towards her and she made a move for him, aiming to bury the knife in his chest in a quick movement. She had warned him, and he had taken her threats lightly. She’d try to kill him then, even if killing him wasn’t an immediate intention. She made a move for him and missed, tripping the man in the process to where he had fallen where she once stood and she stood nearer to her bag. She watched him fall, trying to catch himself on the wall, to keep himself from landing so hard. She hesitated, considering her proximity to her stuff now, taking it and making a run for it. It was what she should have done, but she didn’t.

Instead, she came for him again, stomping towards him around the old, wooden table in the middle of the room. He kicked out a leg, attempting to trip her up, but she hadn’t been that close yet. She easily avoided it, but when she lashed out at him with the knife, he caught her wrist and held it in his tight grip. She couldn’t break free. ”Let go, you fuck!” At first, she had been pushing the knife towards him, but his grip was unbreakable, so she tried to pull away. That didn’t work either.

Glancing over her shoulder, Lithia spied the chairs. With a sudden motion, she threw one of the old wooden chairs down on him, on the floor, in attempt to get her arm free. Once free, she’d retreat to the other side of the table – her bag in between them now – as she’d attempt to keep him from leaving.

”You sure you don’t want to go quietly? You still have time to give up and let me leave with my bag, but not much.”

If he'd failed to get a hold of her wrist, the woman might have found him with the knife, the entire encounter far more serious than he'd believed it would be. His eyes widened at that realization, but only for a moment before they again narrowed in focus. The grip on her wrist was strong enough that he had started to consider the odds of reversing their relative positions, but was interrupted by the chair coming down on him. Rotted wood gave more than it would have, had the furniture been new, but it still hurt, a lot.

Half dazed from the impact, Inca's grip weakened as a result, and he felt, more than saw Lithia start to slip from his hold. A terrible realization dawned on him while he tried to sweep away what remained of the broken chair, that she might be bearing down on him with the knife. Eyes still closed from the impact of the chair, the hybrid slashed blindly with claws outstretched where he thought she might be, but caught nothing with the wild strikes.

When his eyes opened, the reason for that lack of success became apparent, that she'd backed off, instead of advanced further. She was between him and the exit though, a challenge if ever there was one, and made no better by what he took as a demand to surrender. ”Give up so you can put that knife in me? Or worse... “ Inca answered back, sharing his own interpretation of what she was offering him. He rose from his awkward resting place on the stairs, but didn't immediately charge the woman, settling for just a better position if she tried to lunge at him. ”Think taking my chances makes more sense”

”Nonsense,” she purred, intense eyes on him now, watching any intention of a move in her direction. ”A noble warrior wouldn’t stick a knife in the back of a retreating man. You retreat and leave me with my bag, I no longer have a reason to kill you. But if you’d rather fight, then you’d rather fight. I can take either option.” Lithia only assumed a canine’s will to survive would kick in and perhaps some sense would knock into the mind of this stranger, making him realize that abandoning his find would be his best solution. Though, not everyone had common sense like that.

Lithia, with a dagger in one hand and nothing in the other, made a move for the bag, grabbing it by the leather loop at the top. With her eyes on the stranger, in one quick motion, she slipped it over each shoulder. She’d wear it now, even if he lunged for her, for it.

His preparations for an attack had not been nearly as smooth as he would have liked, the process of getting up from his awkward position on the stairs more stumbling than progress. Inca half expected the moment to escalate further, the woman's knife striking out to harm him, but there was a lull that hung in the air instead. The greedy part of him would have liked to have still got the bag, most of it probably worthless to the hybrid, but with so much effort already expended, it was difficult for the would be thief to just let it go.

Inca's eyes wandered between the woman, and to the bag that she soon recovered. With the thing slung over her shoulder, the odds that he'd be able to just snatch it and run had dwindled considerably, while the knife in her hand made him less than keen on another scuffle. An annoyed sounding rumble built within Inca's chest, eyes narrowed in clear frustration, but in the end, he didn't go for her again. ”Tch, was probably just junk anyways...” Inca replied back, signaling that he'd given up on the bag, but also made an attempt to devalue it at the same time, more for his own benefit than hers.

”Don't think a noble warrior would have tried to kill me for a bag of junk either.” Inca continued, uncertain where to go from giving up on the bag. He didn't really want to retreat up the stairs, his pride already bruised enough as it was, but was also reluctant to go past her. With his footing on the stairs still a little bit questionable, the hybrid tried his best to look at least moderately ready for their fight to resume. ”What now?” he asked, a genuine degree of uncertainty in his voice.
