The evening was turning to dusk, the dusk stretching on into night, as the pair of soul mates stood together by the fire, it's heat working to warm and dry their fur while the breeze began to grow colder behind them, but the night air was nothing when the snow furred warrior had Lukos beside her. When they were together, she could do anything. The tingling warmth of their kiss lingered on her lips, and her smile was warm and loving as she held the hands of her mate and looked up into his loving gaze in return. She was terrified, as she spoke, though for the life of her she didn't know if she understood why.

Of course, Lukos loved her, he'd always loved her, she knew that, and yet what was the worst that could come of this? He could say no, and she would be embarrassed, and eventually things would just return to the way that they were, but Nyx didn't want that and she knew, she trusted, that that was not what her mate wanted for them either. She had been thinking about what she was going to say, what she was going to ask him, what the best way would be to go about it, and it had all lead her to this moment, right here standing on the beach beside her one true love, lit by the glow of a warm fire below, and the cool stars and moon up above.

After a while, babbling on and rambling like the nervous wreck she was, the Pyre finally got out what it was that she had wanted to say, what it was that she wanted to be, how she wanted to change herself and truly be his mate, not just in title, but in name and in deed. She wanted to be, Nyx Greyfire, the mother of the Greyfire children as he was their father, the one who was his partner in life through happiness and sorrow, and who would never leave his side, so long as they both lived. I-I want t-t-to be N-Nyx Greyf-fire... B-Because I-I-I love you... She uttered in a hushed tone, her hands gripping his tight as though she feared that some invisible force might come through and tear them apart.

Tan tipped ears pinned back flat against her skull, her tail wrapped around one of her legs as she stood shivering, fighting the urge to curl in on herself and implode completely, but she looked small as she waited for an answer that did not come, just a once easy smile now frozen in place on her mate's grey muzzle, his eyes staring right past whatever he had been looking at. Nyx's expression slowly shifted from a nervously hopeful smile, her lips relaxing downwards, but her eyes growing wider and more concerned. L-Lu..? Lukos...? She whined, pulling his hands a bit and shaking them as one might gently try to shake a loved one from sleep, her ears perking forward for any sign of his voice, eyes searching for any change in expression, but he didn't speak, didn't move.

L.. Lu..! She half sobbed with growing desperation, her brows pinching up in the middle of her forehead and her eyes wide, lips down-turned at the edges. P... Please... Her ears fell again, along with her entire demeanor, until another moment would come and go, and the little fighter shone through again, a little pouting frown plastered to her face beneath angry tanned eyebrows and fiery amethysts. Dropping his hands, the little vixen gripped the thick hide of his neck in her hands and pulled him down to her level quite forcefully, before plastering a forceful and deep kiss on his muzzle, her eyes closing as she molded against him for half a moment, before holding him back at her arms length and staring fiercely into his eyes.

A spark coursed through his lips, traveling through his muzzle and washing over his mind, slowly relaxing his expression as the cogs began to visibly turn once more in his head. The feeling carried on down into his body, as Lukos blinked a few times and realized that his lips were pressed against that of his mate. For some reason, he was on his knees as well? Remembering that he had arms and hands, the grey swordsman lifted them to caress his mate and closed his own eyes as well, pressing into the smooch before she pulled away, sporting a fearsome frown. Lukos, his only reaction being a dumb look forming on his face as he smiled, then proceeded to sift through all the stimuli that he had received but failed to process before.

He remembered suddenly becoming very anxious as Nyx continued to speak, in a manner that was heartfelt and loving, but it felt like she was gearing up for something big. And then she dropped it on him. In fear of being lost in the ethos yet again, Lukos tried not to think of the exact moment that she told him, but rather on the request itself. As a first thought, what he came up with was "is that it?", but realized he was being an ass if that was the whole of it. Truth be told, Lukos had never really given much thought to Nyx not taking the last name that he had chosen for their descendants, as to him, Nyx was always Nyx. He had never needed her to share in his name, because for the grizzled wolf, she was always his. He did not need a name as evidence of this, because it ran deeper than that, as if it was etched on their very souls. Nyx was more of a mate than he could ever deserve to ask for from the moment she said 'yes.'

But now that the option was out there, for them to not only be known as Nyx and Lukos, but as Nyx and Lukos Greyfire, something in his head flipped upside down. It was something that seemed entirely simple from an objective stance, but in his mind and heart, it completely dropped the floor out from underneath the already established dynamic they shared. There would be no confusing their relationship now, no awkward glances to try and surmise the most likely version of how they knew each other. And beyond that, this would mean that whenever others addressed her from now on, part of that identity was that of a Greyfire. The people that they knew personally were already aware that she was his mate, but still, she was no longer simply Nyx. She was his.

And that brought him to the present once more. After she had told him of her plan, Nyx became understandably distraught over his initial reaction, scanning his face and growing even more despondent as he remained motionless as a stone. Eventually growing defiant in her frustration, Nyx grabbed him harshly and forced him down, his unresponsive body plopping down to its knees and kissed him passionately, which in turn essentially restarted the wolf. And now that he had caught up with the events that lead to that very moment, the first thing he did was flatten his ear, and lowered his muzzle past hers, nudging at it from below in an apology.

Forgive me for that, poor reaction. I didn't mean to scare you like that. he breathed, tugging at her arms, wanting to embrace her. For most of our lives, we've lived together as we do now, and you've always been my Nyx to me. But hearing you say that out loud, it felt like there was a piece of us missing, and now it's back in it's place. He didn't have to think about her request at all. The skin on his feet would forgive him later, and the wolf had even just thought of it as if the decision was already made. There was never a choice to be made. Rising to his feet, Lukos took her hands once more, and admired her with shining golden orbs, lifting a porcelain hand to his lips and held her gently.

It would be my honor to be known as your mate, Nyx Greyfire.

The snowy little female melted into her mate as she forced him to his knees and they kissed lovingly and fiercely for a moment, as though she had forgotten that she was supposed to be mad at him now. That lapse in the tiny bundle of ferocity, however, lasted only a moment, as she inevitably pulled back and glared into those deep golden suns of his, and when she did, it was like she watched the lights turn back on, the fire spark back up within them. Any bit of nerves that had plagued her before had burned away in the heat of her petite fury, but even then, that fury began to cool the moment her grizzled grey wolf lowered himself to nuzzle up beneath her chin.

H-Hey, hehe..~ She started with a smile and a scrunching of her eyes. Th-that's m-my thing~ Her heart beat like the fluttering wings of a hummingbird at the feel of his touch, even now, that spark of love and fluttering nerves she felt each and every time he granted her this brand of affection never ceased to bring the warrior to her knees and disarm her. As he began to finally speak, apologizing for the way he had reacted, or not reacted, he began to pull her into him again, and she let him, becoming like clay in the hands of a potter she slumped against his kneeling form and wrapped her arms around his neck as he embraced her.

Slowly she nuzzled against his shoulder and all up the side of his neck and back down again, her warm breath teasing his pelt as she could feel his breezing against her damp fluff as he continued to speak. The words he uttered sent a pleasant chill up her spine, her slender yet strong arms gripping him more tightly as he spoke, never wanting to let him go, as something broken deep within her chest felt like it was beginning to heal in that moment. But as he began to stand back up to his own two feet, she did, and let him slide up past her scarred little paws as they trailed down his chest and eventually came to rest within his own.

He gazed down at her, and she back up at him, her eyes shining like moonlit pools as the two soulmates gazed into each other, nothing between them to keep them separated, no feeling of fear or pride, nothing but him, and her, and the dying fire filled with the coals that would soon pave the path into their new life, their new togetherness. Then, sh-should w-we start? She offered with a hopeful and beaming little smile, her eyes shining and a bit wet with tears of joy, leaning into his chest to smush her face into it and dry her tears with a heartfelt little giggle.

She laughed lightly at his pet gesture, chimes in the wind that brought a smile to his weathered face. He was admonished, having dared to steal just one of the things that made her unique compared to the rest. Oh I'm sorry, was I supposed to ask for permission? he said jovially, chuckling as he nuzzled the tip of her nose. His chest felt calm, a soothing aura emanating from within and radiating out to the rest of his body, his heart a strong and steady drum that kept the beat to which his nerves danced. Their embrace was as firm as the snow she resembled, close and tightly bound, with some happy familiarity to moment's past and opportunities present.

As he spoke the words and opened his heart, the one he claimed as his held him more so tightly, and only reluctantly abated her embrace to clasp his hands, in a roundabout way. But that was who they were, the eccentric pair. Each making up their fair share of the matchless excitement that they shared, leading into one another in a never-ending back and forth. Gazing into pools of amethysts that now reflected the multitude of color and lights from the heavens above, the only thing that felt fitting enough to convey the beauty of what he beheld was a downy grin, to which chicks would be envious of. Luck was hardly a factor in the forces that brought them together, yet for some reason it seemed to be the only explanation for why he had grown to find someone such as Nyx to be in his company, to treasure and to hold.

She offered for the proceedings to begin, before glomping him and causing the male to take a step back, baying with laughter as he held onto her tightly, chest thumping as he looked to the stars. Looking down to the fire that had now crumbled into ash and coals, then back up to a mosaic sky, an inkling had begun to form in the wolf's mind. Yes, lets. he told his mate, but instead of moving to collect the coals from the fire pit to make a path, he led Nyx to one side of the coals as they laid still in embers, the flames themselves now flickering and fading out. With a hint of a smile, he stretched his arm out, and circled the fireplace to be on the opposite end of her, and without a second glance stepped one foot out onto the open coals.

His fur bristling for a moment, Lukos never broke his gaze from his mate, the sizzling of his pads bringing more joy than sorrow. With his off hand, Lukos held it out in an old gesture, one from years ago, from the first night they had truly looked at one another as they do now under this same twilight gleam. With Nyx, taking his other hand, Lukos stepped fully onto the smoldering remains, pulling his love closer to him, and began to sway, gently from side to side. Careful to keep his feet moving, Lukos wrapped an arm around her waist as he brought their hands up, moving in a circular pattern as he led them on this new stage. Forgoing the formalities of choking back the tears, the grey wolf's pace moved at a slow crescendo, step-pause-step, step-pause-step, before throwing in a flourish, step-pause-step-step, and so on and so forth as he invited Nyx to twirl, his arms and hands orchestrating what he envisioned, their performance in the spotlight of the low-hanging moon, shining off the crystal waters of the lake.

The routine grew in ferocity and passion till it took on the form of a waltz, as the two whirled and sent up flurries of sparks and embers, walking on a path of fireflies and sparks, laughing lightly to the orchestra that played for them alone in the afterglow of a lifetime.

Of all the years that the warrior had been alive; with all the determination she had put forth, all the effort, and prowess that she held, with all the hard work she had put into training her body into a weapon, first for Anathema, and then for The Order, and above all her family, all the time she had dedicated to honing her art, she had never been more sure of anything, than she was in this moment, of how much she wanted to live out the rest of her days with the man who stood before her now. Nyx's history, was the history that she shared with Lukos, whatever came before that didn't matter to her anymore. Memories grew vague and distant, trauma and pain had become a blur, and through it all, after every time she fell, the one thing that she could count on was that she would open her eyes and find him there, holding her close, caring for her in a way that no one ever had, showing her that love came in so many different forms, and he gave her all of them.

It was time then, for the mated pair to collect the coals from the now dead fire, nothing but a pile of glowing embers that no longer held flame, but he didn't let go of her hand, and she couldn't bring herself to leave his gaze, as he lead her around the pile of coals and found herself gazing up at him from across it, her hand still in his, as though she were entranced by him. For a moment, she was confused, hesitant, as she noticed the grey wolf stepping one foot into the pit of coals, but then he did something, a gesture that rang out to her from a lifetime ago. Blinking liquid starlight from her eyes, the winter soul gave her most dazzling smile, nodding her agreement as she found herself unable to make a sound.

There was a fear that prickled up her spine that quickly sparked out into exhilaration, her fur fluffing out as she took his offered hand with her own, not a moment to lose, as she allowed him to lead her onto their stage. Lit with a warm glow from beneath, the pain of her paw pads and the excitement of the moment brought the warrior out of her trance and into the present, drawing an elated laugh from the cracked porcelain doll. Stepping, swaying, spinning in time with her mate on a bed of searing coals, her joy and laughter filled the air around them but for a few fleeting moments, before the mother squeezed her eyes shut and danced off to the side, pulling her mate back to the cool earth in a final flourish to their dance, her heart pounding in her chest, but beginning to regulate itself as the pain in her feet slowly ebbed, yet the smile never left her face, laughter continuing to light up her eyes even after the sound had drifted away with the breeze.

L-Lukos a-a-and Nyx, G-greyfire." The battle doll whispered to her mate, having crossed the burning road with him, and laughed, and danced through all the pain that life had brought them, and still they remained together, as they always would. Trying to be subtle about it, the rather poofy looking warrior lead her mate by the hand, urging him over towards the waters edge where they would stand in the shallows, hearts beating as one under the light of the moon, leaning into the his grey chest and breathing in his scent mixed with the scents of fresh water and smoke, and just letting the cool water soothe her burned feet. "F..forever..." She whispered into him, fully aware that they would not live forever, but she squeezed his fingers gently in her hands as she continued. "N-no matter what h-happens."

Looking up at him again, with a melancholy sweet smile, the wintry mix perked her tan tipped ears and threw her long hair back behind her shoulder. W-would you l-like to... g-go celeb-brate..?" The scarred beauty asked her love, looking a bit coy and bashful as she thought about sneaking a bottle of wine laughing the night away by his side.

From the moment he held out his hand, he could see the life spring up from wherever it had been hiding in her, as the porcelain warrior lit up above the smoldering coals. Her laugh became the symphony, her joy was the cadence, her smile the lead role. They danced as if ordained to give life to the flames that solidified their bond, and after eternally fleeting moments, they spun off the stage, a final dip to cap the performance. It was a blessing that they had only improved in grace after learning not to step on each other.

The pulsing in his feet was just overshadowed by his pulsating heart, Nyx breathed softly their names, as the old historian affectionately pecked the top of her head. The one and only. he murmured into her ear, before being lightly pulled into the cool waters again, the icy temperature stinging his scorched pads before becoming pleasantly soothing, the mud coating their burnt toes. Nyx tilted into him heavily, as he stroked her long mane, having grown back in from when he gave it an impromptu haircut what seemed like a decade ago.

She spoke of forever, standing there and holding his hand, the constant pressure warm and familiar on his weathered digits. He couldn't help but think of how they probably didn't even have half of that in store, but to look in those shimmering eyes, one would sit and bargain with Death for his payment till the ground beneath them eroded and washed away. You'll always have me, just as you'll be by my side for eternity. he murmured, caressing the side of her face. His eyes narrowed with a thin grin when she proposed that they commemorate the new beginnings. He thought about jesting with her, reminding Nyx that he had called it earlier.

Lukos took Nyx's arm in his, directing away from the lake, his feet tender but having recovered enough from the burns. I thought you would never ask. he said with an equally evocative tone, tail lightly swaying as he held her close, as all was right with the world.
