[13th – I’d forgot about the encounter with the bear that Keldava has the day before this, perhaps that can even the field a little bit? :P]

It was a sore, but grateful, Keldava that wandered the forest today. Her encounter with the bear had left her injured, sure, but not it was over, the sheer unlikely hood that she had actually come out of it alive had her amazed. She should probably have been resting right now, but the same restless feeling that had driven her to attack the bear was back in full force so she set out walking, though this time made a mental note not to attack any large animals.

Most of her wounds were minor, small scraped and scratches and bruises that didn’t require binding. The exception was her side; the bear’s claws had torn open a good portion of her flesh and fractured – not broken, as Keldava had feared thankfully – some of her ribs beneath the blow. The cuts hurt with a constant burn and every step she took sent a flash of pain jolting through the ribs, but in her uplifted mood, Keldava took the pain to be as much a reminder that she was still alive as a reminder of her stupidity.

Her travels had taken her somewhat farther than was usual for a casual stroll, Keldava’s mind too distracted to really focus on where she was going, aside from turning her course aside when she smelled the Cour des Miracles border approaching. While, for obvious reasons, Keldava hadn’t opted to ride Vildiha today for obvious reasons, she wasn’t alone in her wandering; Devini sat perched on her shoulder, half curled up in the crook of her neck and half sprawled down her back, with a multicoloured tail looping around Keldava’s neck.

Keldava was just about to tilt her course again and start heading roughly back towards Arte when she heard an odd noise from ahead. Curious, she tilted her head and peered into the trees, only a jump back in shock when a chestnut coloured horse burst out from the foliage. In her current condition, Keldava’s first instinct was to get the hell away from anything as large as a horse and she prepared to, but thankfully at seeing her, the horse seemed to calm down for some reason, moving close and nickering in a distressed manner. Confused Keldava moved up to the horse, rubbing her hand over it’s nose and making soothing noises, noting that wherever it had come from it was decked out in full riding gear, and trying to figure out what the hell was going on.

Hati lay on his back for some time, too stunned to move. When he finally did stir, it was to cough and gag, fighting as the air rushed back to his lungs. The wind had been knocked out of him when he hit the ground, and he was still dizzy from the throbbing at the base of his skull. Nothing too serious, as the sickening scent of blood was not present. Slowly the wolfdog sat up, patting himself down as he checked for injuries. He was sore and bruised, but there were no broken bones. Absentmindedly he picked some of the leaves and twigs from his black mane, trying to piece together exactly what happened.

Asagi!

With a start, the young male leapt to his feet, blue eyes wildly tracking about the forest. All he could see were the autumn leaves strewn about the ground. There was no sign of his horse, the horse he had been riding when he had his first accident. He was always so cautious, he had never fallen off before -- and Asagi was so gentle, she certainly would not throw him. But accidents happen, and this time it had been the fault of a fall breeze, whipping leaves into the docile mare's eyes. They had stung her and startled her into bolting, dumping her unwitting rider like a sack of potatoes.

Panic coursed through him as he took off running, grinding his teeth with anxious energy. How long had he been laying there? Asagi could have crossed the borders of the pack, and what would happen to her out in the wild? He could barely concentrate on following the scent, too distraught for anything else to matter. That mare was the last link he had to his mother's love, other than the pendant around his throat. When his horse went missing in the hurricane, Hati found her, and he would find her this time as well... or die trying.

The scent markers of the kingdom faded, and Hati knew he was in lawless territory now. Anyone could steal Asagi and claim her as their own, or worse, the uncivilized heathens that lived as loners could hunt and eat her. The scent of horse sweat and leather was getting closer, thankfully. But the paranoid worries only served to work him up more, and when he caught the scent of another canine in the vicinity, his hackles bristled aggressively. He was not a fighter by nature, unlike his brother and late father. He was not as strong as them, nor could he stomach the sight and scent of blood. But Asagi was his, and he would fight for her sake, to preserve the only thing that still loved him back.

He burst through the foliage, wild eyes spotting the chestnut horse and the dark-furred canine holding her head. His lips peeled back instinctively, teeth bared in a panicked rage. His horse was being stolen! With a wordless snarl and claws at the ready, he launched himself bodily at the stranger, ready to tackle them into the dirt.

If she was honest with herself Keldava didn’t have a clue what was going on. Horses weren’t an animal that she saw very often; either they preferred to stay away from Luperci or they were just uncommon around this area – Keldava wasn’t particularly sure which and didn’t really care. To see what she assumed was a trained horse, decked out in full riding gear, just wandering alone was a surprise, those things were expensive! Vildiha had cost her most of her trading material in Freetown and she had gotten him cheap due to his temper; she didn’t want to think about what a nice tempered horse like this one was worth.

And then if the day wasn’t already confusing enough she got tackled by somebody out of the blue. Keldava had been paying so much attention to the horse with her mind trying to figure out where it came from that she didn’t smell or hear the approaching Luperci until the last minute; her first warning of his approach was Devini hissing as she jumped off Keldava’s shoulder.

Keldava hit the ground hard, letting out a mixture of a snarl and a scream as the stranger’s weight went fully onto her injured ribs, the hard dirt offering no cushion from the impact. Keldava could hear Devini caterwauling on the sidelines as she circled around the fight but the sound didn’t register much in her mind as she focused on the bastard that had just attacked her. Enraged by pain Keldava fell back on her most basic fighting tactics and thrashed about, wiggling and squirming as she tried to get the luperci attacking her off and get to a standing position. Her hands scrabbled at his face, trying to get a grip anywhere she could and push him off while she pummelled him with her knees, trying to hit his groin or stomach; anywhere soft that would cause him some pain.

Asagi whinnied and backed away from the colliding Luperci, stamping her hooves in disdain as they crashed to the ground. There was a cat hissing and yowling nearby, but Hati disregarded it, focused on the bastard who dared to try and steal the horse his mother gave him. The horse thief let out a shriek of pain and anger, and Hati barked in grim satisfaction, ready to fend off this interloper.

Hands were scrabbling at his face, distracting him, pushing at him. He growled in annoyance, snapping at the fingers to try and drive them away from his eyes. Then for a split second he flinched in surprise, and faltered -- the stranger was a girl! He had been raised with a strict code of chivalry, and males were not supposed to strike females, it was terribly dishonorable. Then her sharp knees collided with his stomach and he yelped in pain, recoiling from the feisty opponent. It looked like he wouldn't have a choice.

He stumbled to his feet, rising to stand over her. He was a good head taller, but already he was anxious -- she had the air of a fighter, what if he couldn't drive her away? His ears were flat against his skull, lips peeled back in a snarl. Maybe he could intimidate her with his size. He swatted at her shoulder, hoping to score a glancing blow and encourage her to run away.

Pain made Keldava angry and clouded her mind but it also gave her strength, kept her fighting when her side felt like it had been doused in oil and set on fire. Keldava’s attempts to push her attacker’s face away were disappointing, met with snaps that made her tighten and withdraw her fist, but her efforts lower down were more effective and the brief feeling of soft flesh around her knee was followed by freedom as the male recoiled backwards. Keldava sprung to her feet, scarred face stretched on a snarl and arms held ready as she glared at him.

For a few brief moments Keldava’s fingers ghosted over the hilt of the sword strapped at her thigh. It would certainly be effective at either scaring away or beating the male, but in some part Keldava felt uneasy about using a sword on an unarmed opponent. Mostly though, she just wanted the satisfaction of doing this barehanded. Keldava laughed inside as the male tried to intimidate her, too angry for such tactics, and gave no answer but a disdainful snort and sprang forwards, a movement which inadvertently carried her straight into the male’s swat, sending her stumbling backwards with a bruised shoulder.

Annoyed Keldava tried something else and crouched down low, circling the male but slowly backing away, as though she meant to flee. When she thought that she had hopefully made him lower his guard Keldava then sprung forwards. The claw swiping towards the male’s face was only a diversion as her other hand rose shortly after, the two attempting to clasp the fur behind the male’s head, to provide more power to the knee shortly following the motion.

WC: 332 OOC: Mannn Hati is such a wimp compared to her Muay Thai. xD;;

Hati flashed on the fight with his brother, trying to remember Skoll's aggressive moves and how he could emulate them now. He didn't have his brother's sheer brute strength, but he did have height and weight over this opponent, and the adrenaline coursing through his veins had him nearly trembling with energy. He could do this, he could defend Asagi from this degenerate. He had to win this.

The black and tan female sprang to her feet, nimble and ready for him. His guttural, wolfish growl did not frighten her, and judging by the hard, practiced look in her eyes, perhaps nothing would. She darted at him, but Hati's arm was already in motion, and the stinging blow connected with her shoulder. She dropped down low, and there was a brief moment Hati felt victorious; she was acting cautious after the strike and it seemed like she might be backing off. Black fur bristled down his spine, and he attempted a feint forward, trying to spook her into running. But she did quite the opposite.

In a flash she was on him. He threw up his hands to protect his face from her claws, but it was an obvious trick that he did not respond to in time. Her claws dug into his mane, jerking his head sharply down as her knee came up. He yelped as pain burst from his lower belly, coughing and sputtering as the wind was knocked out of him. This was far worse than what Skoll had done to him. Wheezing, he struggled to buck his head back free from the lock, but her fingers were dug deep into his fur and would not budge. Rising panic forced him to bull forward, wrapping his arms around her back and hugging her in an attempt to crush the air from her lungs. He dug his claws into her dark pelt, refusing to let go as he pushed her off balance, meaning to topple her back to the ground.

Keldava gave a feral grin of satisfaction when her knee sunk into soft flesh and a pained gasp escaped her attacker. This satisfaction turned to frustration when then male raised his head, trying to break free of Keldava’s grasp.

With the difference in height between them it was hard enough for Keldava to keep her grip even with the stranger’s strength weakened by surprise. With the taller luperci trying to fight back she quickly lost the tight grip her forearms had made and was left with nothing more than handfuls of fur, better than nothing but far from ideal. Keldava didn’t have long to stew over this as the male quickly surged forwards, knocking Keldava almost clean off her feet and sending them down to the ground for the second time.

Once again a cry of pain escaped Keldava as the male’s weight crashed down on her injured ribs. A low, constant growl of frustration came from Keldava as she squirmed and struggled under him; she was a trained – if only partially – fighter but her size and lack of strength compared to the male put them on even footing at best, allowing him to just use brute force against her techniques. With this second beating Keldava’s ribs were a constant source of pain now, fighting against her attempts to escape almost as much as the male himself.

Unable to free herself from the luperci atop her Keldava instead tried to make the best of the position and freed her hands from the tight, and hopefully painful, grip they had held on the male’s fur and dropped them down around his throat, linking her thumbs and squeezing with all her might. As she did so Keldava curled into the male, putting her head past his and her chest as close as she could her to his neck, trying to block him from prying apart her hands .

His heart was pounding harder than ever before, fear laced with adrenaline driving him into an instinctual, feral state. Hati had always been a pacifist, avoiding conflict and sickened by the sight of blood, but deep down he was still a beast capable of violence. He just had to be pushed into it, and this was the furthest he had been pushed by anyone. Fur bristled all down his spine, ears flattened against his skull, lips peeled back in an angry grimace. Hati wanted to hurt her, to punish her for hurting him.

The two grappling canines crashed to the ground for the second time, but the female's grip on his mane did not slacken. Her cry of pain was satisfying, but she did not yield, choosing instead to struggle fiercely against him. They were both growling in frustration, and he gripped her arms to try and get her to let go of him, squeezing and pushing her away.

Then her deft hands were around his throat. He was still winded from the blow to his stomach, and suddenly he could barely breathe at all. He convulsed wildly, slavering jaws snapping on nothing as he fought for air. She was still underneath him, smaller body tucked against his as her merciless hands throttled his windpipe. Desperate to remain conscious, he began to pummel whatever he could reach, raining punches and scratches on the assailant's exposed back. A strangled whine tore from his throat, panicking as he saw stars bursting from the pressure. He was so dizzy, it was hard to focus or aim, but his clouded mind held onto one aspect -- she wouldn't let go unless he made her back off.

"You dirty thief... you won't... get my horse," he wheezed with difficulty, spittle gathering at the corners of his mouth as his hands found her belt and traced it to her taut stomach. He dug his claws through her fur, driving them to pinch and twist and pierce her skin. It was intended to be painful and make her recoil, not to seriously damage her, because his strength was flagging fast. He could already feel his limbs growing heavier, slumping against the smaller wolfdog. Her chokehold was dominating him.

[OOC: Keldava ain’t happy >.> ]

Pinpricks of pain shot through her body where the male’s claws pierced her fur and skin, but it wasn’t the pain but the male’s words that got Keldava’s attention, and managed to somehow piss her off even moreso than she already had been. “Your horse!?” she snarled before taking advantage of his lightheadedness to get him off her, twisting around and slamming him onto the ground with her on top, her weight adding to her choke. “You think I’m trying ta steal yer fucking horse?” Keldava’s words were accompanied by snarling and spittle flying into the male’s face, each word punctuated by Keldava shaking him by his neck, trying to slam his head against the ground.

Keldava kept her hold for a little longer just to be safe and then withdrew her hands. She took the time to throw one last punch at the male’s face, though her heart and her strength wasn’t all into it, and then rolled off him. She fell to the ground besides him, panting and groaning while she clutched her side. Part of her wanted to continue fighting but with the revelation of why this idiot had attacked her she had gone from pissed off to murderous and with how many knives she had easy access to, a continued fight might end up with someone dead and she didn’t want that, no matter how pissed off she was. She had actually become too angry to fight – if she was less angry and in less pain she might have found it funny.

“Ugh, if ye’ve broken my rib again over a feckin’ horse I swear I’ll…” Keldava’s threat trailed off into angry mumbling, punctuated a glare at the male. Seeing that the fight was over Devini padded over to Keldava, licking the girl’s ear and mewing comfortingly.

WC: 604 OOC: My last post, you can write an ending or just archive. Thaaank you! <3

His ploy failed. He felt her twist around, her hard-muscled body swinging behind him to force him into the dirt. Not once did her chokehold lessen, and he had already lost. He could barely hear her angry snarling, his head knocking against the unforgiving ground as she shook him violently. It was dizzying, especially when his mind was swimming in an oxygen-deprived haze. Distantly he could make out her cursing, the words that seemed to launch her into even more of a frenzy than his actual fighting -- stealing the horse. Was she trying to say she was not a thief after all? "What else... were you doing... with her?" he whimpered, completely limp in her grasp. If he was going to die out here, choked to death by a stranger, he wanted the last thing he heard to be Asagi's fate.

The final punch connected solidly with his eye socket, and he yelped pitifully in defeat. Almost instantaneously he could feel the swelling begin, and knew he would be sporting a black eye, a personal badge of shame from this humiliating encounter. Instead of continuing to beat him senseless, though, the weight lifted from his back and he heard, rather than saw, that she had flopped down nearby. His hands flew to his throat, massaging the bruised and swollen area so that he could gulp down air. He wasn't dead. He could still feel his silver chain around his neck, so he had not lost his mother's necklace. A sharp headache was already lancing through his skull, and he was battered and aching all over, but it seemed the painful thrashing was over.

He lay panting beside the victorious combatant, wheezing and drooling as he caught his breath. Squinting through one good eye, he spotted Asagi, and was relieved that she had not run off during the commotion. She was clearly distressed by all the snarling and jumping around, and judging by the way she kept rolling her eyes and pawing at the ground, she was eager to leave this place and the aggressive stranger behind. Hati was too. The victor was muttering something darkly to the nearby cat, and he ignored her, suddenly afraid that she could change her mind and punish him in a more permanent way. The image of his mother flashed unbidden to his mind; she lay helplessly prone on the floor of their home, slashed to ribbons by the knife of an assailant they never did capture or even identify. His father's remains, the gaping hole where his throat was supposed to be. Their family could be cursed to die violently at the hands of strangers, and he would be next.

Feeling sick to his stomach, Hati crawled with difficulty on his hands and knees, trying not to whimper aloud. He was not proud, but he was practical. All he wanted was Asagi, and if it meant fleeing from his defeat without another word, so be it. He reached over his head and grasped the stirrups in his hands, and with a monumental effort, managed to raise himself partway into the saddle. He lay slung over the mare's side like a burlap sack, gaze lingering at the unknown female from Cercatori d'Arte that had fought him off so brutally. He couldn't help but feel like the victim here, although... he had attacked her first.

Troubled, but even more frightened and doing his best not to cry like a child, Hati smacked his palm against the horse's rump and she obediently took off at a gallop. They were soon swallowed up by the trees, swiftly on their way home.
