I Think it Might be Fear

Johanna 5/25

The heat of spring hung heavy in the air as the wintry mix took shelter from the pelting sun in the shade of Eagle Tower, jaws parted and tongue lolling just a touch past her jaws in order to allow the excess heat to escape her small body. Going from winter to spring had never been a transition that the fighter was particularly fond of, as the crisp and cool air blew away, leaving the beating sun and dry heat in it's wake.

cool stones, moss, and pine needles were the earthen throne upon which she sat, her facade cool and collected on the outside as the warrior meticulously wrapped her paws in freshly washed and dried linen bandages, fabric that was once white, but now held the dry, rust-brown tinge of her own blood from battles won and lost, permanently embedded in it's fibers.

It was a reality, that the soldier femme was slowly and surely coming to face, if not accept, that she would not be around forever. The valiant protector, who had defended her home, and her family, for so many moons now, was getting older, her body pained her at times, though she was still as sprightly and fit as ever, she couldn't help but feel as though she had not gained any ground in some time now, and she was afraid that she might start to lose it, if something wasn't done.

"There.." The Pyre said to herself as she fastened the end of the bandage down around her wrist and gave her fingers a testing flex. Satisfied with her work, the marked up mother pushed off of her knees and rose to her hinds, a shiver trailing down her spine, originating from her head, as she shook the dust and debris from her downy pelt.

The mother had given Johanna a few basic lessons in fighting, as she had with all of her pups thus far, but her daughter didn't seem to have much of an interest in training. "J-Johanna!" The warrior barked out, beckoning her daughter to come to her. She carried with her two sticks now, each about the length of her wakizashi, but straight and solid. Nyx was not going to be around forever to defend her family, this was a truth she now acknowledged, and so, she knew the last thing she could do to protect her family, was to teach them to protect themselves.

The young initiate sat with her legs tucked against her, playing with her lengthened mane and admiring the digits on her hands. While she had been using this form for a while now, and was trained on how to use it, every knuckle never ceased to amaze. The intricacies and utility of this upright form seemed innumerably more expansive than just being on four legs, even if there were some slight trade-offs. For instance, fighting came less easily like this. There were rules and strategies to it, or at least more so than what could be done on all limbs. And if weapons were thrown into the mix, it was an entirely different dance each and every time, depending on who you ask.

Her mother for example was quick, lightning strikes and fast maneuvering to play on her size and physique, with daggers and short blades to compliment her style. Her father on the other hand, to account for his handicaps and play into his personal strengths, fought more defensively, adapting his tactics to the individual and using a sword long enough to keep an opponent at bay while he thinks. They referenced to themselves as such when Johanna was first learning the basics of how to fight, telling her what to look for when squaring off and how to deliver a punch. And not to lie, it felt kinda good knowing how to beat someone up, even if the lesson was painful and tedious.

But after the customary ritual of teaching their kids to fight, Johanna could relax now and sit on what she's learned until she decides what to do with it later. On such a fine day as this, she found herself in the company of the family fox Nuri, a sort of caretaker-part-watchdog in an ironic sense. He hunts when he pleases, and would on occasion get into a verbal jab match with Lukos, when the mood suited them both. But for now, he was content to curl up next to the youngest of the Greyfires, napping in the cozy shade of a warm spring day.

Both of the loungers' ears pricked up when Nyx had called for her daughter, but only Johanna got up to answer her, given an unseen look of pity from Nuri. The fox, having known the warrior for years now after she found him in the wild, knew exactly the kind of family quality time Nyx liked to have, and rolled the other way assuming he could find time for a gladiator match on another, less sleepy day. The smoke-breeze girl dusted herself off, giving a polite "Coming!" to her mom before flitting through the camp to her call, all with a smile. "Yes Ma-" A smile that quickly disappeared upon entering a clearing with her mother squaring off with two identical sticks.

What was before an energetic wave of the crooked tail died as Johanna cowered slightly, cautiously backing away as if stumbling upon an freshly awoken bear. "M-Mama, you asked for me? Need me to, go get something? Find Dad?" she asked in a nervous tone, reconstructing a very minced smile as she recalled tales of how, intense, the warrior could be. Perhaps the first look appearance of this situation was misleading is all. Had to be. She could be, starting a fire. Yes, that it. She wanted Johanna to go gather some firewood so she could spark up a bonfire. With really really long sticks. That made sense. Yes.

The warrior flexed her bandaged fingers around the wooden sticks that she grasped in her hands as she scanned the camp for her daughter, catching sight of the girl as she stood up from the bundle that her and Nuri had been resting in, watching as the young girl called out to her mother in reply, and noting how the red fox had turned away and gone back to sleep. He would have his turn, the Pyre thought in a matter of fact manner. It was high time she review those feral fighting drills she had gone over with her vulpine companion, who she had entrusted the safety of many a young pup to on occasion. he would have his turn.

Amethyst eyes narrowed in an unreadable manner as the blue eyed Greyfire approached her mother, the warrior able to see the smile quickly leave her daughter's face at the realization of what exactly it was that Nyx had summoned her to do. "N-No, Love, come o-over here." The fighter cooed, seeming as innocent as she could without letting any of that good spirited sadism creep into her smile or voice.

"We're t-training today, y-you learned the basics of s-s-self defense, but i-it will be of n-no use to you if y-y-you don't practice and hone those skills." The normally upright warrior said with a somewhat sassy smirk, tossing one of the straight wooden sticks towards her daughter, not knowing whether the girl would reach out and catch it, jump away, or just let it hit her in the face, though the warrior sincerely hoped that it wouldn't be the latter, as the implications of her daughter's apparent lack of reflexes would reflect rather poorly on her prospects as a fighter. "N-No getting out of th-this one, Miss."

Almost immediately after Johanna started to backpedal, her mother reassured her in a most un-reassuring way, beckoning her closer like a butcher to the lamb. Never before had Johanna been so terrified of her mother, or really at all. She had always respected and knew that the Pyre was not to be trifled with, so the fear that feasted on her now was all the more heightened. "But there's a nice breeze over here, very nice, I think I want to stay." she said very quickly, eyes wild as she backed off submissively.

Her mother instructed her that they would in fact be training today, to which the young girl adamantly denied. "But Mom, I don't need to-" she started to say before yelping as a stick flew straight at her, ducking out of the way as it continued to fly by. Looking at the scarred warrior, she pouted, not really enjoying being put on the spot so harshly. "But Momma, we already have so many warriors and stuff, right? Why do I need to be one too?" she said with a whimper.

The young girl grumbled, only seeing this as an excuse to be added into their ranks as another soldier. "I don't really like the way it feels to hit something, and I really don't like getting hit." the teenager confessed, having something of an aversion to pain now. The mother had been smirking for a while now, and stated that there was no escape from this. Giving a sour but sad look, Johanna only mumbled "No getting out of any one." before she marched off to pick up the stick and limply hold it. Gods, she hated having to fight. She disliked most things that were both arduous and tedious, this being chief among them. But there was no going back now.

The amethyst eyed warrior eyed her daughter with consideration. She was young, pretty, there was no mark nor scar nor a hair out of place on her smooth white pelt that would speak of any negative experience with the outside world. She was soft, perhaps a bit too sheltered, and showed hesitation and resistance when it came to learning the skills that would keep her alive when her parents were no longer around to do so for her.

This was all in stark contrast to the Pyre herself. She was small, like Johanna, but most of the softness had left her form long ago. She had a slender frame, but what she lacked in size, she more than made up for in speed and strength, which was apparent if one took care to see the solid musculature that wove beneath her pelt, and rippled when she moved. She was beautifully toned, yet her visage was completely marred, scars covering her from head to toe, hairless flesh colored lines and gouges danced across her wintry form, telling of the countless battles the petite mother had seen in her relatively short lifetime.

She should have still been in her prime, but the number of injuries the small mix had incurred was adding up, damage to her hands and arms made it painful for her to fight even without a fresh injury to ad to the mix, damage done to her legs threatened to slow her, something that the Pyre fought and trained against every day. She was well aware that losing her speed would spell death for her.

Johanna was quite obviously unhappy with the turn of events this afternoon, yet Nyx knew that it was necessary, even if she couldn't yet bring herself to explain to her daughter why. "I-I'm your mother, s-so pick up th-that s-stick and face me, or I'll m-m-make you run around the camp u-until next s-sunrise!" The militant mother barked, it was a threat that Nyx could follow through with as well, as she would personally be chasing her daughter with said stick, ready to give her a good whap with it if she slowed down too much.

Nyx could hear her obstinate daughter mumble a complaint as she picked up the stick, to which she growled and barked out a sharp "Johanna!", as she raised her stick before her as they had taught the ashen pup to do before when teaching her the basics. "L-learning t-to fight is im-im-important, t-take this seriously!" She demanded, before coming at her daughter from the front, wanting to see if the girl would remember any of the evasion techniques she had been taught by her mother already.

As she stood in place and pouted, Johanna idly gazed at her mother, noticing things that she never had before. Nyx had always just been 'Mom' to her, and her look was just how a mother should look, but with her age came with it the knowledge that not every warrior was so toned, so deeply scarred, with a frame that was small and thin yet still filled a room with presence. The adolescent wondered what her mother had looked like before, when she had no scars like Johanna. Maybe they would be closer to being the same.

But such thoughts would have to wait, as the ashen teen flinched as Nyx snapped at her in a commanding capacity. Even though that just made a rebellious flame flicker more clearly, Johanna obeyed begrudgingly, knowing some nicks and bruises were better than being whipped and vomiting up this weeks' meals all day. However unfortunately the porcelain warrior's ears were still in their prime, as she snapped yet again. The poor girl winced, feeling as if this was some sort of punishment for enjoying sunbathing and curling under trees on back to back days.

Again, she was left with no time to dwell in her head, as her mother advanced rapidly with a lecture, the stick whistling as it reared back and swiped towards her, and Johanna yelped as she stumbled into a backstep, frantically raising the rod to block if she didn't evade, her posture suffering from her being unprepared. With an annoyed hiss, she put a zealous foot forward and slashed horizontally, swinging her whole arm into the strike. Of course she was taking this seriously, that's why she didn't want to do it. Not that she could say that again, since all that would come of it was another lashing. Verbally and physically.

The porcelain fighter was unyielding in the face of her daughter's insubordinate pouts and protestations. There was a stubbornness in the girl, she could see that fire behind her eyes no matter how hard she pouted, it was something she must have received entirely from her father, Nyx was sure that she was never so unruly, and she certainly couldn't see herself with that facial expression painted across her scarred visage.

Nyx was at least a bit pleased when her girl quickly attempted to shield herself from the first strike, backpedaling and raising her own stick just in time for Nyx's to make contact with a resonating crack. She could see that her daughter's base was unstable, however, having not taken the time to refocus on her foot placement between backing up and going in for her own strike. The snowy warrior smirked as she saw her opportunity swing at her full force.

The matron warrior was well versed in speed and strength, techniques of evasion, and using other people's force against them, and she felt that the best way for her daughter to learn these techniques, was to first experience them firsthand. Taking a step back with her rear foot to get her body out of range of her daughter's side swipe, the winter warrior cast her own stick down against the back of Johanna's swing, so that her own force was added to her daughters weapon in an attempt to overextend her swing and put her off balance, and then to finish the job, in the same spinning motion, the fighting femme dropped down on her front leg and swept the other out against the sides of Johanna's feet, a move that she had used on Lukos once or twice before.

"D-Don't put t-too much force into any o-one attack, or s-s-someone bigger might use it a-against you. Go for q-quick cuts, i-in and out fast." She explained to her prone daughter, tan ear twitching as she crouched by her.
