There's more to this brave adventure

Hibiki hadn't been able to stop thinking about something that had been mentioned to him. Skoll was a fair bit older than many of the members of the Petite Cour, and had brought up a very major point about them. Though they were a small band, having survived from the attack on their home, that didn't leave them with much of a purpose. The only reason they were together was because they had chosen not to find their home somewhere else.

Though the dark male made his frequent trips to Casa, he could not bring himself to be a part of their ranks. He wanted to stay, to help fix this broken family of his own. They needed something that would make them rise up from this lowest point in their lives.

The question that remained is what kind of standing could they represent?

The Court had been a place of nobility and honor. There was the chance that they could still keep their alliance with the pack of knights, but to what purpose? The pack had far more members to spare if there was any kind of trouble. Perhaps more to assist one another with help in their rebuilding? Maybe, but then what could they owe their allies in return? They had such little to work with.

Perhaps he could offer his blacksmithing services to others in return, but he didn't know what the others needed.

Hibiki stood along the shore, letting the cool waves brush against his feet. The weather was getting warmer, so it was nice to feel something cool along his body. His gaze moved out over the waves. What could they do? What could they be to stand out from the others in the area? Should they rebuild their nobility back up? Perhaps seek out to be some kind of trade band? He didn't know.

And it was frustrating to say the least.

Starlight was meant to be a worker. She'd known that for a while. Perhaps her parents had known even longer. Aldora still hadn't quite figured it out it seemed. Or perhaps, she just hadn't realized how efficient of a worker Starlight was. Ever since she was young she was all about moving and doing and being. She couldn't seem to sit still and if she did it was because she was about to pass out.

Yet strangely for such an energetic individual, she was quite quiet. She was rarely destructive unless towards designated objects. She even more rarely lashed out at people - aside from her brother but were brothers really people anyway?

So when she'd found herself with yet another "break day", Star was at a loss for what to do. The chicken coops were cleaned. The stalls were mucked. The gardens were tended. The armory organized. No one had anything for her to do. Her uncle had suggested she go swimming to cool herself off, but when she'd gone to the stream, she found the Nightshade man washing newly dyed cloths. With little desire to turn purple, she'd turned away. Rum had suggested she read but it would be a cold day in hell before that happened. The written words was useless to her.

So without chores or tasks, Star had settled down on all fours and went for a run. And then when she grew tired of running, she decided to hunt. Now, with a lovely duck in mouth, Star was almost ready to return home. Birds were too feathered for her to eat out she'd found. Usually she liked to settle down to defeather them first, which required two hands.

Trotting gaily across the sandy beach, prize in tow, Star was surprised to find a figure where she'd been not too long before. He was colored similarly to herself, though she didn't think she recognized him as a relative. As she drew nearer, the smell of him seemed very familiar. It was a scent she knew she'd smelled at home before... curiosity piqued, she couldn't help but stop. "Who are you?"

Hibiki kept his gaze focused in front of him. There was little that could be done when he was by himself, left alone to wonder with his thoughts. He wanted so much to help his home, help the band that had offered him so much after a low point in his life, but he felt so powerless to do so. There were ideas, but nothing was being done to further them. He would need to talk to the others.

One of his priorities had been to help Kalypso's children. If all of them were going to come together under the banner of one cause, then it would be best to help them cope with what happened to them. He would be more than pleased to team up with Skoll to help train them, to help teach them to defend themselves.

One ear turned at the sound of the voice calling out to him. It was hard to hear anyone approach across the sand, making anyone's footing disappear, and the crashing of the waves did little to help with this as well.

Light blue gaze fell on the dark girl. She wasn't that old from what he could tell, but shifting age. She seemed to be around the same age as Borya. Her dark pelt mixed with some lighter tones reminded him of himself, but there was no connection between the two of them... not unless she was somehow related to his nephew and the Hushhowls. Turning, the breeze of the ocean let his kimono fly along at his sides, My name is Hibiki, former member of the Court. And who are you?

Her scent carried somewhat, but not enough to determine where she came from. The sea's breeze brushed it more downwind, but there were some traces of something familiar.

Nudging the duck with her feet, Star was surprised that the stranger - Hibiki - had answered her with little to no animosity. It was almost pleasant. "Starlight," she called out to him. "I'm from Casa di Cavalieri."

The court he'd said. He must mean the court that had fallen not so long ago. Unfortunately, Star hadn't been old enough to go visit before its untimely demise. She had heard rumors of how it had fallen but rumors were rarely truthful. Now, the nearest pack was still too far away to go interact with independently. It was unfortunate they were so far away from everything else.

"What are you now though?" A 'former' anything wasn't much of a title. His identity seemed tied to something that no longer existed - did that mean his identity didn't either? Surely there was more to this dark stranger than who he used to be.

There was also more to this question than Star was letting on to. Right now, she was so caught up in winning her First Blood ceremony that she hadn't put much stock in what she would do with her life after it was over, but that was coming up rather quickly. She would have to figure out her own path and identity far sooner than she would like.

So this dark, young lady was from Casa, a place all too familiar to Hibiki. It was fascinating really, to know that with all the times he had been there, be it to learn or to see his new family, there were still many that he had not yet seen in his time there. She happened to be one of them.

The dark male offered her a small smile to this answer, I see. You've probably seen me wandering around Casa before. I go there often. I'm on good terms with your leader and I've spent some time coming to see my nephew. He gave a small pause, Perhaps you know him? Borya? Starlight seemed to be around the same age as him, so perhaps she would have seen him more than some of the others. He couldn't say for sure. He didn't fully understand the way that the pack of knights operated.

Hibiki felt a pang in his heart when he addressed himself of the former court. Such a wound was still fresh in the grand scheme of things, and everyone back home was still working on recovering from the effects of the attacks. He wondered if she might have known about what happened to their once ally.

He gave a soft sigh before answering her question, I'm the Armurier of the Petite Cour. There are still those of us from the Court that have come together as loners. We're doing our best to make our own. It's a bit.. complicated. Damage would heal in time, but how much time could not be said between each member of the new loner band. There were those who knew they needed to move forward, to press forward for their future, but there were those that were still stuck. They needed help... but he had nothing to offer them.

Star's eyes brightened at the mention of Borya. In a rare show of excitement, her ears and tale perked up as she drew a little nearer. "Borya's my cousin!" And her favorite one too as of yet. She knew that her Aunt Teagan had had a child recently, but he was still far too small and wobbly to have made a lasting impression on the Hushhowl.

He used a foreign word that she couldn't quite make sense of. It was curious to her how other places couldn't just use words that made sense like Casa did. Scouts, hunters, scholars, these titles matched the profession concisely and without any room for any miscommunication.

"How?" Survival wasn't complicated. You ate, you slept. You drank plenty of water. Sometimes there was a necessity of shelter when the weather got rough or when puppies were too young to survive out in the elements by themselves. All else was unimportant ornamentation. "If there's a group of you, surely you can make it work, right?"

"Besides," she said somewhat nonchalantly. "Any of you who can't make it out on your own are always welcome in Casa, of course." She knew many of their old clan had merged with the great warrior family and that they were always welcoming in new, fresh blood into the pack.

Hibiki watched the way that Starlight's eyes lightened up at the mention of Borya's name. She was quick to exclaim that he was her cousin. Well that was an interesting discovery. There was so much more to this side of his new family than he had first been aware of. He gave it a moment of thought before he spoke again, I see. I've only ever met Dusk and Darkness. There are many more Hushhowls? Borya had taken on their name after all, and he was happy to know that his nephew had a family where he felt he belonged.

How he had once wanted something like that. He knew now that the need to impress was not needed to live his own life or make himself happy. Everyone should be content with themselves and what they could achieve.

It seemed the young girl was having a hard time understanding what was so complicated about things in the Petite Cour. She had a basic understanding, and he logic was not flawed. There was a group of them, and they could most certainly make it work.. it was just a matter of breaking past the barriers that were in the way.

Then she had been quick to offer an extension for inviting them to Casa. He gave a small chuckle to this, Thank you Starlight, but we had already considered the option when our attackers had given their warning to Kalypso. We can make it, it's just that... He paused for a moment, There are a few who are having a hard time. Kalypso feels like she's failed us, Cidro had been kidnapped with others, and the event is still fresh in everyone's mind. It's a matter of moving on that makes it complicated.

Still, he had always been hopeful, I know it will take time, but I know that we will make it in the end. I think it would help for us to have a solid purpose again, something we are lacking.

Star nodded gravely. Her grandfather, mother, aunts, father, and brother made the sizable Hushhowl clan. By her reckoning they were the second most prominent family in the Cavalier pack not too far behind the Knights of which she was also a member. She and her brother would find it difficult later in life to find any eligible mates within their pack because of it.

Hibiki tried to explain, but it only made the naive girl more confused. Of course their ex-queen had failed them. There was a reason that she was no longer a queen and that there no longer was a Court for her to queen over.

Honestly adults were just clueless. They all made life far more complicated than it needed to be. They made mountains out of molehills, spent their time wasted worrying about less and less important things by the day. She much preferred the company of her father and grandfather. They were simple people with simple wants like whether the weather would be adequate to go hunting in or if the sudden rains would flood their dens. That made sense to worry about.

"Is survival not good enough?" Honestly what was there else to really worry about if at the end of the day your bellies were filled and your people safe? Perhaps it was understandable when you had to worry about the less capable members of a family. If they had injured or old or young members then maybe they had more mouths to feed than able-bodied to hunt. Then they would be better suited to study farming and animal husbandry, she would admit. "Or are you having problems with that too?"

Starlight had nodded, though she had done so in a bit of an odd way. Her nod was grave, seeming to imply that there were many others he had not been aware of that were part of this family. Perhaps the next time he was in Casa, he would have to see if there were others in this family he would be able to meet, get to know this new side of his family that he was a part of.

There was a bit of silence. He was never fond of speaking of some of the more personal feelings about those in the loner band, particularly when it came to Kalypso. She was such a ray of sunshine in his dark life before he had come to the Court, and now she was in need of a ray of her own. He had hoped to help her, even if all he could offer her were kind words. It was time to return the favor to her.

The look of confusion had not gone unnoticed. Most of this probably were problems she didn't have to face in her life. Adulthood was full of so much more complication than there was for someone at her age. Perhaps once she had some more experience she would understand the hardship all of them were going though.

The dark male's face had gone blank for a brief moment. Had she really been questioning that survival was not enough for them? How could anyone in life get through without some kind of purpose? Such a thing was so important, and the way that she had spat his words back in his face were not welcome. Ears pulled back to her own words, but he did not raise his voice to her. It was merely a show of his disbelief and annoyance, I take it you have never had to face any kind of tragedy in your life yet. It doesn't always take people a quick time to get over certain things. One day you'll understand.

He gave a small pause before exhaling, We are surviving well enough. We have to rebuild, but there is time to work on that. I suspect we won't have any other loners out to get us.

Star cocked her head at the brief flash of emotions on Hibiki's face. She was acutely aware that it had something to do with whatever she'd said, but nothing really clicked as the perpetrator. Perhaps there had been some form of misunderstanding or perhaps he'd finally had an epiphany about something. Starlight wasn't quite familiar enough with this man that she could tell exactly what emotions had just run across his face, but something warned her that they weren't exactly the most pleasant.

"No," she mumbled. "I haven't." Well of course everyone had to meet with tragedy one day, but it wasn't like Starlight was itching to feel it. "Is this one of those 'you'll understand when you're older' things?" That was a phrase everyone seemed to be saying lately. She'd understand something about life when she was older, and death and boys and babies. Star was beginning to wonder though if growing up was really all it was cracked up to be if it involved all that.

Her ears cocked forward at the words rebuild and her eyes finally showed some actual brightness of interest. "Build? I can help build things." She wasn't skilled with it but she'd always wanted to learn. There was just something so satisfying working with her hands. And if they were once allied - and if they were almost a sort of kin - wasn't it kind of her duty to offer her help to the less fortunate?
