After finding the little cabin, Elle and Keabetswe carried on north toward the Serpentine Mountains, pausing at a little lake to water the horses and rest. The sun beat down on the two women, warming their fur and melting the snow and ice around them. The horses scraped at the earth and nibbled dry, dead grass. Closing her eyes, the short-coated African dog bathed herself in sunlight and relished in the way the golden rays reminded her of a home long lost.

A creature of heat and near-eternal sun, Keabetswe was not well-equipped for long periods of cold and snow. As a result, she had had to make up for her short, smooth pelt with layers of clothing and furs. Much to her gratitude, Krokar was a place of filled with kind and selfless people and she had been provided for without hesitation. But Betsy did not like charity. She accepted these gifts out of necessity, but she vowed to make it up to them in any way she could.

Though the grief of losing her mentor, the old woman who had been her last remaining tie to her birth tribe and lost family, was still forefront on her mind, the chance to make up for Krokar's hospitality by scavenging for goods and materials that they could use was not something she could pass up. She could carry her grief with her wherever she went, whether it was hidden away in a cabin in Fiskebyn or out in neutral grounds with a foul-mouthed Greenhorn, it did not matter. So she chose the latter and felt better for it.

"Ah've found some shit here!" Elle called out and Betsy opened her eyes, glancing at the curly-coated woman who stood at the shore of the little lake.

"What is it that you have found?"

Elle glanced down at the items in her hand. "Seaglass, Ah think."

Betsy shrugged. "We should be looking for better things." Elle dismissed her with a flick of her wrist and went back to scavenging the shore of the lake while Keabetswe rose and started searching elsewhere.

Reluceo had been trying to get out of the pack lands a little more on trips that did not involve going to Sapient. She liked visiting her children, especially now that they were older, but it also meant seeing Leonardo. That was something she knew she should avoid, in part because how much she wanted to see him scared her.

She was still a little thin, nightmares of her time as a captive still woke her, but she thought she was recovering. She no longer felt the gut-clenching fear of being outside Krokar's protective borders, and she no longer felt the need to run when she was traveling to keep an invisible, nonexistent canine from capturing her again. Instead, she was following the scent of a couple of Krokar members. She wanted to do some exploring for the pack, as the leadership had directed. It was a way to pay them back, she thought, for coming to rescue her and the others. Even though she did not feel panicked, Reluceo thought that it would be safer to be with other Krokar members. Hopefully they wouldn't mind; if they did, she could just move on to somewhere else.

Had she been more aware when she was rescued, she might have realized now that she was heading back towards the mountains where she was held captive, but this was not the case. In this instance, ignorance was bliss.

Reluceo heard their voices before she found them, and she recognized Elle's voice immediately. She was not too familiar with the youth, but had heard her voice around Fiskebyn and knew her by name and sight. She thought someone would have to be a real hermit to live in the pack as long as she had and not know who the Cormier kids were. Elle, though, was especially easy to identify.

"Hello," Reluceo said approacing Elle as her companion wandered away.
"Mind if I join you? I like seaglass." It might not be too valuable compared to other things, but it could make for pretty necklaces and jewelry. "Maybe there are some shells or something here, too,"

After dismissing her traveling companion with a click of her tongue and a flick of her wrist, Elle turned pointedly away and resumed scavenging. Keabetswe stretched and rose and, without giving the Cormier a second glance, stepped away from the little lake to begin searching for other useful items. She swiveled her large ears back and turned her head enough to assess the newcomer from her periphery but, once it was clear it was only another Krokaran that had come to join them, Betsy carried on on her own without a word.

"Ach, o' course Ah dinnae mind." Elle grinned toothily, then held out the piece of pale seaglass that she had found for Reluceo to admire. "Ah bet there aare," she agreed, closing her fingers back over the nugget of seaglass. "An' whe cares if it ain't better than other junk, enyway. 'Tis still useful."

Bending at the waist, Elle started to scour the shoreline again, scraping at the firm sand with her feet and occasionally digging deeper with her fingers. The water was cold and the sand was hardly warmer but the young Cormier persevered. "How hev ye been, anyway?" Elle asked lightly, glancing up at the woman who she had admired for so long from afar. "Ah dinnae think tha' Ah've seen ye aboot in a while."

Reluceo looked at the sea glass when Elle held it out to her and nodded in approval. It looked like a nice enough piece, which would probably look good as part of a necklace or something. Reluceo did not have any skills in making jewelry, so she didn’t know how that might work. Elle’s question then caught her a little off-guard because she didn’t realize that anyone would notice her lack of presence. It was a pleasant surprise to realize that someone other than her brother would notice and apparently care enough to ask.

“Ah, yeah, I’ve been spending a lot of time in my cottage after getting back from the mountains,” Reluceo said. She started moving as well, scanning the sand for anything that might be useful or just pretty. Reluceo wasn’t too picky; she enjoyed things that had no other purpose, and she was hoping to do a little decorating in her house, and maybe in Thiago’s because of course her brother would appreciate that.

“But I figured it was time to start going outside again, and exploring out of the packlands.” She couldn’t spend all her time hiding, afterall. As Reluceo walked, her toes bumped into something solid and she stopped to see what it was. Turns out it was just a piece of driftwood, so she kept moving.

A glint then caught her attention and Reluceo brushed some sand away from a little spiral shell. She picked it up, turning it so that more sand flowed out of the opening while examining it. There was a little chip in it, and the tip of the pointed part was missing, but it still looked nice enough to her. The inside that she could see was that pretty smooth pearly texture.

“Here we go, found a shell,” Reluceo held it up in case Elle wanted to have a look. “Maybe I could find more of these and string them together as a decoration or something.” She wasn’t sure if the pack storage had any shells already; she wasn’t sure they would use space to keep something without a use.

Whenever she heard of the mountains, she thought of Malcolm and her heart gave that complicated twinge it often did when her mind strayed into the territory she reserved for the memories of her mother. He had played a role in helping to free Reluceo and the others, but Lilith's sacrifice to preserve his own life up on those barren mountains had left him irreparably scarred. To say that she wasn't sad to see him go was a lie that she spouted to this very day.

Digging at the hard sand with the claw of an index finger, Elle narrowed her eyes at the little glint that was struck by the sunlight. "Aye, tha's good," she commented as she excavated the thing in the sand. "Ah'm glad tha' yer oot an' aboot again. How did ye stop aall o' yon nosy ninnies buggin' ye dey an' night, though?" Elle glanced at Reluceo, an irritated huff blowing out between her lips. "They're ruthless."

Leaving Fiskebyn to live in the Ruins had been the best idea that she and Fionny had ever had.

Looking back down at the thing in the sand, Elle scraped away at the sand more arduously until she managed to free her prize. "Ach, hell," she murmured, turning the thing over and over in the sand. "Ah've only foond a feckin' rock." Rising, the curly-coated Cormier looked at the shell that Reluceo had found and pushed a gust of breath through her teeth and lips with a sharp ffffffffff. "Lucky," she said, her eyes drifting to the shoreline again. "Ah'll help ye look but dinnae blame me if Ah'm ne luck." Elle grinned back at her pack mate then continued to scour the sands.

"Wha' was it like, anyway? On yon mountains?"

“It was certainly difficult,” Reluceo said with a laugh. She didn’t really want to be taken care of... except by Leonardo, which was why she ended up heading to Sapient for a bit. Back in Krokar, though, she had wanted to be mostly left alone, although it had been nice to know that she had support.
Reluceo couldn’t help but laugh a little at Elle’s rock comment as she continued to hunt around in the sand for more shells. She already liked the youth’s sass. She found another shell, followed by a rock of her own before Elle spoke again and Reluceo tensed a little.

This was certainly not the first time that Reluceo had been asked about her time in the mountains. It was, however, the first time someone had asked about the experience. Lucille had asked after her wellbeing several times since she had returned, but Reluceo was unused to the bluntness offered by Elle. One one hand, it was refreshing, but on the other hand, thinking about it made her chest tighten and her stomach hurt.

“I don’t remember a lot of it too clearly,” Reluceo said after taking a moment to recover from her shock. “They kept us on whatever was in the alcohol to begin with so that we didn’t overpower them and escape.” From what she had gathered, there were not all that many canines keeping them captive. They made up for their low numbers with planning, which had worked for a while.

“I remember the cave being cold, and it smelled bad. We had blankets, but they weren’t very warm. I think mine had a big hole in it.” Reluceo continued to dig in the sand in search of more shells. She hoped that since there had already been a second one here, there might be more in the same spot as if they would somehow congregate there on purpose. The digging motions were a bit more rough than was really necessary, though, and she accidentally send a shell bouncing a few times across the sand to rest a couple feet from her.

“Oops,” Reluceo muttered, reaching over to pick it up. It looked different from the first one she’d found, which was good. She was hoping for variety for this decoration. “I’m finding more shells over here if you wanted to come look, too,” she offered, not wanting Elle to feel left out since she hadn’t been pleased with her rock discovery before. Reluceo wasn’t sure how old Elle was, but she had a youthfulness about her which, when paired with the bluntness, caused Reluceo to assume she was not very old.

Elle nodded, understanding the difficulty. "Ach, feck aye," she said seriously, glancing at Reluceo. After Bramble had come back without Ailie, and it was discovered that she was missing, it felt to Elle as though every time she looked at a pack mate all she could see was pity. And when she heard mutterings from family or other Krokarans while they were around, she could only imagine they were talking about poor them.

It was good to be away from all of that.

While she searched, freeing things from the sand that might be useful or pretty, Elle listened to Reluceo, oblivious to the woman's discomfort. "Damn," she murmured, glancing up from the shoreline. "That's feckin' sick." And oddly interesting to the young Cormier. She as glad when Reluceo continued, offering up more details for her even though she hadn't asked for them. Elle was still a simple whelp (at least, she was in the eyes of Krokar, it seemed) when the drama unfolded but she distantly remembered talk that the alcohol might have been the source of their woe.

Pulling up what turned out to be a piece of driftwood, Elle grumbled unhappily and moved on. But when Reluceo mentioned having found a spot that she'd yielded more shells from, the young Cormier decided to take up her offer. She moved from her unlucky patch of sand toward the older Greenhorn. "Sounds like hell, wha' ye went through," Elle commented.

Crouching, Elle began digging at a promising spot. "Ah'm glad tha' ye got oot o' there. Bu' de ye notice tha' people treat ye diff'rntly, though? Like yer a wee bird with a broken wing or some shit?" She clicked her teeth. "Tha's how it felt te me when mah mum disappeared." She gritted her teeth, digging her fingers into the cold sand. Then, finally, she freed a broken piece of a shell. "Ah! Ah got one!"

"Yep, like they thought I was broken or that I would break if they said slightly the wrong thing," Reluceo said. "It's getting better now. I think they're starting to see that I'm fine." Mostly fine, anyway. It wasn't everyone; and some were genuinely helpful, but still, there was plenty of pity that she didn't want. While her time in the mountain was not something she wanted to talk about constantly, it was kind of nice having someone who didn't dance around the topic now. It was refreshing.

It was also nice that she wasn't Thiago.

Reluceo scooted over to make more room for Elle in case the shell cache was in a really small area. She wanted to make sure the younger Krokaran managed to find something, too, and then thankfully she did.

"Oh, look how shiny that is," Reluceo said. "That's a good one." Her tone lacked any sort of condescension or patronizing effect because she actually meant it. She wasn't sure what the shine was called, but it was on the inside of a lot of shells. "Mine haven't had that kind of shine yet. Just a little bit in this one." Reluceo held it out. It seemed like the shinyness had been worn away, maybe by the abrasive sand. Reluceo continued to push her fingers into the hard sand, sifting it a little when it loosened, turning up a couple more shells.

"Oh this one is almost whole," She placed it on her palm. It was a spiral and just the end of it was missing. It was the most intact one she had found so far, but the inside wasn't all that shiny.

Elle nodded. "Aye, tha's good," she said, genuinely glad that things were improving for Reluceo. But there was some bitterness, too. She wished that she could say the same about herself, but it still felt to her as though everyone – her father, her cousins, her aunts and uncles and the rest of her pack mates – all looked upon her with pity. Whether imagined or real, it was really grating. Oh, poor things, she imagined they said to one another. They have no mother.

It was arrogant of her, to think this way. But among the many things that Elle was, arrogant was certainly one of them. She had never considered the probability that she and Fionnlagh were simply not always on the minds of her pack mates or family members. That they had, in fact, moved on from Ailie's disappearance and just accepted the fact of the matter without attaching any emotion whatsoever to it.

Prideful, Elle looked over the broken shell and thought how lovely it might look hanging from a leather thong. "Aye, 'tis, innit?" Though she had little in the way of creativity, she thought it would be simple enough to turn into a necklace. She would check with some of her pack mates, she thought as she turned back to the sand to continue searching for more treasures.

Glancing at the newly discovered shell that Reluceo had found, Elle felt a twinge of something – disgust or sadness or irritation – when she thought of how the spiral shell reminded her of the one her mother always used to wear. She choked the feeling down, as she so often did, and nodded her approval at her pack mate's find. "Aye, tha's a rare find!" she said, quickly turning back to her own search.

Above, the sun continued to shine and Elle continued to forage, scouring the shore for their natural treasures.

OOC: we could probably just fade here? Not sure where else to go with this and FoL is long over. c:
