horse round up thread

thread one of the round up, set around the beginning of November, no posting order, have fun guys! 3+

The Starkhelm sat restlessly upon the back of her painted mare, further ahead from the small band of Mistwalkers that she would have usually liked, but she didn't want to risk spooking her often flighty steed. She herself was here only to supervise for the most part. Her skills with equines only stretched so far as to enable her to ride and even then she was reluctant to go any faster than a spirited canter. Alone she would have been almost useless in this pursuit and it was down to the dutiful nature of Valemen and woman that this little envoy had even set off. Besides, with what Saga and Ragna had discovered during their scouting, it seemed like the more hands on deck the better. While they were certain enough that the threat had dissipated, none of them was foolish enough to take any risks.

It was a relatively short journey on horseback and so it wasn't long before the group came to a stop at what Saga had assumed had formerly served as Krokar's grazing fields. This seemed as good a place as any to start searching and after taking a short moment to regard the overgrown fields, Saga turned Ghost back around to the group, and spoke.

'We're looking for two horses. One grey, the other bay.' Saga spoke with all the gravitas of her rank, it showed in her body language too. 'I don't know these horses, so I don't know what to tell you to expect. Exercise caution in whatever you do,' she advised, 'And exercise respect. Not long ago our neighbours called this land home and we will remember that.'

A careful pair of green eyes scanned those who had volunteered. The lingered over Brom for a moment longer, a further warning to him to act accordingly and not let himself get too spirited.

'Get going.' She said simply, lagging behind and thinking of Krokar and it's former members.

Especially Oscar.

Sitting upon her own mare, Hopi, Sedona kept off to the edge of the small group of Valemen who'd volunteered for the round up of the horses that had been spotted by Ragna and Saga. Strange equines could be completely unpredictable, even if they'd been accustomed to people before, nobody could be certain that their behavior towards a group of strangers would be even remotely friendly. Sedona hoped that her skills from back on her cattle ranch could come in handy here.

Saga spoke to the group and Sedona nodded her agreement. It was important they all exercise caution around the unfamiliar creatures. "Remember to come at the animals from a side they can see you from, if you come up on them from behind, they will see you as a threat and likely run." She added to the Starkhelms' warnings. "If anyone does end up spookin' one, that's where I come in with the lasso. If I tell any of ya to back up or move outta the way, I need y'all to listen. I've got ropin' and ranchin' experience and I'd hate for anythin' to happen to any of ya while I'm trying to get a rope on the horses." She said to everyone gathered. Tightening her grip on the rope she had looped around her arm, the Hawkesond tipped her hat up and out of her eyes a bit more. "I suggest fanning out to locate the beasts. Once we do, we'll need to herd them to a place they will have less area to move and run from us. A copse of trees, or a ravine. Sound like a plan?" She said and smiled. I have faith in y'all that we can do this without a hitch. Just follow instructions and nobody will get left behind or hurt. Alrighty? he said and gave a slight wag of her tail. "Let's do this!" With that conclusion, the Whitesage woman turned her horse and trotted up front of the group to lead the way deeper into Krokar's former territory, keeping her eyes peeled for any sign of the two horses they sought.

The day carried a soft warm breeze, a type of unusual warm that nicked the chill out of the brisk temperature just barely, and strong incoming scents of the upcoming season. Winter steadily crawls forth and this year would seem to possibly promise to be a pure example of its given name. Pitch preferred Autumn, its scents the most. Soft, casual, steps from each dark pad would crunch up the leaves into a burst of nose-flavor. He just couldn't handle it he had to just take it in, the feel of the perfect breeze mixed with the scent of the rotting leaves. Slowly coming to a stop bringing his nose pointedly up as high as he could reach in a smooth slow motion as he inhaled, closing his eyes to focus on the scent and to let it dance on his tongue as he held his jaws slightly agape letting his dark tongue catch the breeze. Holding that position for what felt like a long minute, subtly taking in long breaths, his fairly long fur lightly twisting about his form gently with each small gust of nose-candy. Always when he came to a new type of terrain he would something of the sort, something to just savor the new introduction of a place. His way of 'greeting' it. Every place was unique in its own way, even if it did not really appear that way and he had come to find an interest in finding the differences to help understand what fauna might be here.

Quietly to himself as he comes to bring his head back down
"Dad, Mom... you wouldn't believe this p-"

Coming up short of his conversation to his deceased parents, speaking more to himself with that they will always be with him in his heart, as he detected another scent that was... unusual. Something he couldn't quite place. Immediately his nose began to work overtime trying to catch whether or not the scent was from a cross wind, close enough to catch or up wind from the main breeze. Slowly looking around but his black paws cemented to the dead foliage and needles, his slightly big ears standing erect and almost touching one another in doing so.

"It's close..." He thought to himself as he pinpointed a rough direction and 'locking' his head towards that direction. Crouching down carefully, uncertain of the distance yet, he gently touched the cool ground with his hands and began to kind of crawl that way. The motion would seem to appear awkward in motion for one of that size being still in a two-legged form but he was adept in doing it observation purposes. His dark multi-colored coat blending fairly well with some of the bare shrubs and dead leaf coloration while his fur silently dragging along the earth as he makes his way steadily to a form of clearing. The smell was definitely becoming stronger... and some leaves were disturbed. "Well... that's an odd print." Coming upon a fairly big-sized half circle-ish imprint in the soil. Pretty deep one at that. Taking a minute to cock his head at that one as his fingers had found the animal print, tracing it without actually touching it. Giving a double take at the oddity before slowly carrying on forward, gently reaching to his chest to lightly hold/shelter his bird-carcass purse as he came to a thicker bush... he could hear the sounds of munching. The smell was getting pretty thick as well. Examining the bush for a slight second before trying to, quietly but only semi successfully, push his head through just enough to see. The noise of course catching the attention of what he could best describe as two... thick, antler less deer with manes and... hair-tails? He was at a loss. They seemed minorly spooked by his presence but not bolting... not aggressively coming at him either. He was thankful for that. Keeping sure to keep still, his head very visible compared to the lighter colored stick-y bush. His reddish-brown eyes looking on with interest, nose stuck forth subtly taking in the scent while coming to the final conclusion of...
"...odd print for an odd animal." Speaking quietly to himself.

starting round two, sorry this is short! <3

Brom's blue eyes flashed a look of innocence back, duly ignored by the Starkhelm. He'd understood the message and Saga knew well enough that he'd abide by her request, he'd learnt quickly when Saga ascended higher into the ranks that she had little patience for foolishness.

The D'Angelo fell silent as Sedona began to speak, explaining things further to the little group. Saga had next to no experience with horses and it had been a great relief when the Whitesage woman had volunteered her skills. Sheep and goats often proved to be more skittish than actively troublesome, horses, on the other hand, were a law unto themselves and required a skilled hand to return them to the Vale.

The dappled woman nudged her paint horse onwards, following Sedona's lead alongside Brom, who rode the bay gelding she and Baelish had traded for. Ember, as he was named, was a good fit for the young former nomad. Both were spirited and playful, and somewhat stupid too...
