Running her bandaged palm along the mare's umber flank, Evelyn smoothed away any dust and dirt and debris left behind by the thick bristles of the brush. In her other hand, held in place by a worn leather strap along her knuckles, she gripped the tool's wooden edges and ran it down the horse's broad hide. In the golden glow of the sun overhead, Vegas shined.

With a firm pat, Evelyn turned the mare loose and swiveled around, eyes searching. Blackjack grazed some distance away, but she could make him out: smoky pelt, ivory face, pink nose. She gave a brief whistle, pushing a burst of air between her teeth and her lower lip, and was rewarded by her stallion's immediate attention. Nickering back at her, the dark horse flicked his tail and started to close the distance between them.

Evelyn watched, his pace casual and his strides hale. From what she could tell with her single sighted eye and the distance that still separated them, there was no evidence of lameness or injury nor of illness or poor health. She lifted her eyes up from his legs and his gait, pleased to see that his ribs and hips, which were once visible from winter's unsatisfactory pasturage, were now adequately covered by a healthy layer of padding.

Blackjack grew larger in her field of vision as he neared, close enough now that she could see his smooth, dark pelt and the long hairs of his mane and tail. She paused her quiet visual assessment abruptly, eyes focused firmly on his mane as she bridged the remaining gap and maneuvered around his side. To reassure him, Evelyn held her palm out for him to nose while she narrowed her eyes at the braids that wove through her stallion's long, dark mane.

She set her jaw, lips pulled thin, and spun her head around. With her good eye burning with fire, Evelyn sought out the culprit: Notch. It had to be Notch.

OOC: Wherein Notch shows off his super fancy braiding skills. :')

Notch shifted from foot to foot next to Auger as Auger reached down and lifted Monte’s hoof. There was a lot of mud packed in around the hoof structure, so he started prying it out to make sure there weren’t any rocks digging in. He was used to doing this wherever he was, so in the pasture was not strange to him. If keeping the horse’s hooves clean was his intent, it would be an exercise in futility. Monte was likely to make a bee-line for more mud just because he could. That wasn’t Auger’s goal, though; he just wanted to check his horse over. A few rocks fell down with the clumps of dirt, but the hoof looked fine, so Auger let the horse set it back on the ground before moving on to repeat the process on the next hoof.

“Stop moving around. You’re going to make Monte nervous,” Auger grumbled. Notch had just finished braiding the mane of Evelyn’s horse. Even Auger could admit that it turned out nice. That didn’t mean Notch should have done it. There were plenty of horses whose manes were long enough to braid, but no, he just had to select the one horse whose owner was sure to be mad about it. Just as he was running his hand down Monte’s leg to pick up the hoof, Notch apparently spotted her.

“Oh crap! There she is!” Notch hissed, ducking behind Auger.

“I told you it was a bad idea,” Auger replied, straightening up. He otherwise didn’t move, neither to reveal Notch, nor to protect him further. Notch brought whatever Evelyn was going to do to him on himself. Since braiding a horse’s mane was harmless, Auger didn’t think Evelyn would harm Notch. Probably. Hopefully.
“I think she saw me!” Notch whispered, and Auger felt Notch clutch his arm.

“Yep I think so. Better start explaining,” Auger said. Notch took a deep breath and then stepped to the side with a wave and a grin.

“Doesn’t he look beautiful?” Notch called. Auger shook his head and picked up Monte’s hoof to start picking the mud out. At least the stallion didn’t seem to be reacting to Notch’s antics.

She scented him before she saw him. But when she caught sight of his drab, plain pelt, there nearby his brindled companion and the bay draft stallion, the Vicar slowed her incessant searching long enough to bristle the fur along her shoulders and wrinkle the bridge of her long, scarred nose. And then she paused and, weighted within that pause, she allowed her eyes to glare in his direction unblinkingly.

If she were the type to do so, she would have pointed ominously before storming in his direction.

Behind her, whether from loyalty, betrayal of his hairdresser, or out of pure curiosity, Blackjack walked casually after his mistress with neither urgency nor unwillingness, his pristine braids tapping against his lithe neck cheerfully. For all anyone knew, the stallion was simply providing evidence for the coming trial.

"Beautiful?" Evelyn roared back, glowering deeply at Notch as she approached. "What's he got t' look beautiful for? You got it in your fool head he's gotta look dandy for th' ladies?" She clicked her fangs, annoyed. "Blackjack ain't beautiful, boy. He's practical." She lowered her brows, deepening her glower. "There ain't nothin' pretty 'bout bein' practical."

Letting that hover in the air between them a moment, the Vicar took a few deep breaths and, in the time that stretched, Blacjack approached them with a rumble of air through his broad, soft snout. Evelyn blinked but kept her composure – her confident, agitated, and irritated composure – while her steed announced his arrival. Only after she had allowed his presence to sink in did she turn her head and reach out a bandage hand to his muzzle. He tasted it with his lips.

Evelyn looked back at Notch and then gestured to his companion. "You couldn't've done that instead?" she asked him, referring to the hoof work that Auger was performing on his own handsome stallion.

As Evelyn went on, Auger pushed down the need to bite back at someone who was being mean to Notch. It was partly because she was scary and partly because Notch really should have known better than to braid that horse's mane out of all the options he had. Monte hadn't escape the mane braiding session, either. Instead, Auger kept his mouth shut since Notch himself wasn't being insulted (yet) and continued on with his task. He gently set Monte's hoof down and moved to the next one, running his hand down the horse's leg the same way so that he would shift his weight, allowing Auger to pick up the hoof.

"Why can't he be both?" Notch asked, crossing his arms. He only had a couple of inches in height on her, but being so short, Notch was used to standing up for himself against canines who were taller than him. He also sometimes picked fights that Auger had to finish, but Auger was pretty sure this would not be one of those.

"This way, his mane doesn't get caught on stuff while he's out in the field," Notch added, managing not to cower in the face of Evelyn's anger. Auger was impressed. It's nice and neat and out of the way." Auger also kind of saw where Notch was coming from with that reasoning. He had previously cut burrs from Monte's mane that would have been avoided if the hair wasn't dangling into the bush while Money was eating something nearby it.

This hoof had mud caked in it, just like the other one, and Auger wasn't surprised. He scraped it out, being careful of the center area of the hoof and a couple of rocks fell to the ground as well, having been stuck in the mud. That couldn't have been comfortable. Once the mud was gone, he swiped his thumb over the surface of the hoof to look for any damage done by the stones but didn't find any.

He stood his ground, arms crossed and stance firm, and Evelyn felt the stirrings of respect in the depths of her stony heart. But still she glowered and fumed, listening silently as Notch offered a reasonable explanation to the benefits of braiding a horse's mane. Reasonable and beneficial, but not necessary so far as the Vicar was concerned.

Sure, their horses' manes and tails could become tangled on occasion, but with the amount of care and attention she and Santiago gave to their mounts, they hardly became knotted enough to require extreme measures. Their small herd took care of one another, too. No, braids were most certainly not necessary.

"Supposin' that happens, it sure ain't occurrence enough to be dollin' him up somethin' fancy," she argued, her voice a low growl. "We tend to our horses regularly and we'll take care of 'em how we always done. And that ain't never included braids." The movement of Auger's fingers rolling over his horse's hoof drew her eyes downwards and she watched him a moment before nodding subtly in approval.

She glanced up again at Blackjack's lovely braids and snorted unhappily. But her stallion didn't appear bothered by the weaves parting his mane and Evelyn ultimately decided he could keep them for the time being. She had other things to tend to at the moment, anyhow. "Jest keep them fancy styles to your own fool self," she said, flashing her mismatched eyes to Notch again before she turned and stalked away.

OOC: xD Evelyn is so beyond unimpressed ahahahah

IC:
Auger knew that Notch hadn't meant to imply that Evelyn's horses weren't cared for, and he hoped that Evelyn knew that, too. The horses were clearly taken care of; Auger pitched in sometimes just because he was already grooming his own horse and Notch's. These also weren't particularly fancy braids, but Auger chose to keep his mouth shut on that part. There was definitely no need to poke the hornet's nest here.

After he finished up the current hoof, he used the excuse to move to Monte's other side, running his hand over the horse's body as he went to make sure that he knew where he was the whole time. Auger could feel Monte getting a little tense, probably from how annoyed Evelyn was, so he didn't want to accidentally spook him. He was also feeling for any cuts or scrapes that weren't visible. There was one new one on the horse's hip, which Auger suspected was from a broken off tree branch because Monte liked to scratch himself using a particular crooked tree. The cut didn't seem to be serious, though.

Although he wouldn't admit it, at this point he was really hiding more than anything, even though he did still have a hoof to do. He took his time with a further inspection of his horse, but didn't find anything else for cuts, so he got to work on the next hoof. Like the others, this one was caked in mud, so Auger scraped it out like before, watching mud clumps and small rocks fall to the grass.

"Fine," Notch said. Auger kept his head down as Evelyn turned away and looked over when Notch came to stand next to him.

"Well I suppose that could have gone worse," Notch whispered, stepping closer to Auger, who straightened up to watch Evelyn walk off.

"Uh-huh," Auger said, sliding his arm around Notch's waist to give him a quick squeeze. "You should maybe start unbraiding, though." Evelyn hadn't demanded it, but it still seemed like a good idea. Auger nodded to Evelyn's horse and then gave Notch a shove in the horse's direction, followed by a swat to the butt. Notch made an indignant sound, turning a quick fake glare on Auger before he headed over and got to work.
